Able to park and cook right outside our door of #17

Just what we needed from camping 2nights, friendly and clean. Bed, bath and room all in clean and what a gem. Only complaint is walls thin, we had a baby and dog next door. But just what we needed! Park like setting with a friendly face to check us in.

After dinner at Luna's and some great conversation with Luna, I made my way to Sherburnes Mountain Pine Motel. Luna told me that this family owned inn has been in business and in the family for years. The family actually used to own a store and took a lot of business on tab. Eventually they acquired the land from so many unpaid bills. Or something of that sort, I should have taken better notes. My room was exactly what I expected for the low price I paid. It was impeccably clean, quaint, woodsy and yes, outdated. I loved it! I checked in fairly late and Terry, the son of the owner, stayed up late for me, walked me to my cabin which was already perfectly heated and made sure the lights were on. He was also there when I checked out in the morning and gave me a map and lots of tips for my trip through Glacier National Park. The rooms are nestled among the trees. The air crisp. It was just a great place to be. I would gladly stay here again.

After a very long day of driving from Yellowstone on June 25, 2011, we finally arrived at the inviting Mountain Pine Motel. The owners are extremely nice and welcoming. After checking in and chatting with Terry, the owner, I realized I hadn't paid for the room. I returned to the office, almost in a panic. Terry wasn't worried and said he figured he'd be paid at some point. That's when I knew I wasn't in California any longer. Our room was very clean, very retro, and quiet. The location, to the north of the Glacier Park Lodge, is what I would consider the better part of East Glacier (the main drag was rather run down and had a not great reservation vibe), close to some restaurants and a laundry facility. We really enjoyed our stay here and can't think of any reason not to give this motel five stars. Note: For a great dinner, visit Luna's, where I had a wonderful tri-tip steak. Being on a reservation, most area restaurants don't have very difficult to get liquor licenses, but diners are free to bring their own beverages, which can be purchased at Brownie's (a store and Internet cafe), right down the street. The joke goes that every restaurant in Montana has the best huckleberry pie, but the pie at Luna's was outstanding: a thin graham cracker crust with cream cheese spread on it, then piled high with huckleberries. That pie was a highlight of our road trip!

I spent 6 nights here in early September as part of an organized hiking group. I love rustic little mom and pop places like this, so I was perfectly happy here. The hotel itself is not very modern, the beds and pillows weren't great, but I wouldn't expect them to be in this kind of place. If you want fancy, stay down the street at the Glacier Lodge. The location is great - you are within a short walk to several restaurants and shops and a bit longer walk to the train station (they will pick you up) and the "downtown" area of East Glacier. If you are looking for a room to crash in after a day of sightseeing, I would definitely recommend this place. I believe the rooms were less than $100 per night but they do book up early.

But then I learned it's the original grand lodge built by the Great Northern Railway, full of history! In terms of location, it worked perfectly for one night of our trip. It's very convenient for the Two Medicine area of the park. But I wouldn't recommend it as a base for a long visit, it's almost an hour drive to the St Mary visitor center. I'm pretty surprised by the negative reviews here. We stayed in a Main Lodge Value room and found everything clean and comfortable. Nothing fancy, but everything I expected in the room. And the lobby and common areas were outstanding. There are a ton of great places to sit, the big logs are really impressive, and the grounds are terrific, with flowers, horseshoes, and even a small (lumpy) soccer field. Everyone we encountered were friendly and hardworking. Most surprising are complaints about tiny showers: ours had a neat large clawfoot bathtub with good fixture & curtains to shower. So I guess that isn't a common feature, but it's not like we had a super deluxe room.

Front desk said they would send the manager who never showed up. Back to the front desk and spoke to the manager who said there were no other rooms available and whose fix was to provide fans. Not a good fix. No other way to cool the room. We had to go elsewhere if we wanted to sleep so we told the manager we wouldn't be staying. He got rude and said we wouldn't get a refund. I asked for the owner's phone number and he said he was out of town and it wouldn't matter anyway. It was apparent to me that the A/C had not been working for a while and they didn't care. They had their money. We spoke with another patron who was not happy with their room either and said all other motels in the area were booked solid. We were at a popular National Park. Also there was little to no cell phone service in the area for both ATT and Verizon. So we were even unable to check other nearby motels for vacancies.

The shower definitely needs some work as does the water temperature; it was either scalding hot or freezing cold (no exaggeration). Needless to say, I must of taken the quickest shower of my life. The only thing that slowed me down was the fact that every time I tried to raise my arm, my elbow hit one of the walls (it was that tiny). Since I only stayed one night, it was do-able. If I planned on stopping through longer, I would possibly consider something a bit more spacious. PS. The lady, Judy, who runs the place is a hoot! She definitely brings a lot of charm to this location.

It is worth staying here just to meet Judy!…read more She breathes joy and warmth into this sleepy little motel, and gives you candid and spot on reviews of the local eateries and attractions. And she is exceedingly accommodating. We arrived at 11pm, no problem, and that night the Amtrak didn't get in until 2am, and she woke up to greet her guest with bells on her toes. But let's make sure we all understand what the Sears Motel is. It is a low budget place to lodge during your explorations of Glacier National Park. This isn't a Hyatt, or even Comfort Inn, this is the cottage your family stayed in at the lake for vacation when you were a kid, minus the kitchenette. We stayed in #8, and found two very comfortable beds, a CLEAN, but small bathroom with excellent water pressure in the shower with plenty of hot water for us all. Let's be real, we only wanted a place to sleep. We explored Glacier from sun up to past sun down for our three days here, and exhausted and needing showers and beds, this was WELL WORTH the budget price. I would enthusiastically recommend this place to anyone who understands this kind of travel with a 12 and 10 year old. A few details: - The units are not air conditioned. There is a fan. We stayed here during the hottest June days they ever had in Glacier, and with the door and window open and never needed the fan. - Yes, three is a TV, I think she should get rid of them. We didn't need it, and were annoyed to hear one being used in #7 which was attached to us. Note, we only heard it because their door and our door were open, we did not hear the TV through the shared wall. - The front deck on our unit was a thrill to have every night as we enjoyed a cider or a beer - Eat breakfast at both Luna's and Whistle Stop, breakfasts that were hearty and put a big smile on your face, oh, and the bakery across the street is GREAT If we were annoyed with Judy for anything, anything at all, it was that she didn't wake us to see the Black Bear with cub that was in the campground two mornings in a row. Come on Judy! Unfortunately, unlike everyone else at Glacier while were were there, we didn't see any bears, and the ones in the Sears Motel Campground were as close as we got. Seriously, for us this was a great find for our family travels out west to Glacier and back, and not only would I recommend the place for the traveler with the proper mindset, we would enthusiastically stay here again, and very much hope we do again some day. PS... The gift shop is filled with treats too! Don't skip it if you are there.
