We liked the idea of a smaller "resort" and this location looked the best, and most reasonably priced, out of limited hotel options in the area. There are less than 10 cabins, a lodge, and steakhouse. A river runs behind the property but from our cabin you couldn't see it. The trees are abundant and gorgeous, though. Starting with the highlights, we appreciated the friendly staff, tasty food at steakhouse (that they adjusted based on our needs), the charming lodge to visit for internet (only place you're guaranteed service), and the attractive, quaint cabin with breathtaking views. Based on these features I'd rate the place four stars. However, the cabin experience is what brings down the rating for me. I completely understand that you visit a Montana for the wilderness, and we were staying in a cabin not a big hotel, but we weren't trying to get a camping experience. I say that because of the ABUNDANCE of bugs inside the cabin. Again, woods = bugs. However, upon arrival the cabin was filled with months. There were at least 15 that I counted. And I saw four spiders within about five minutes. I spotted three more spiders in the bathroom while showering. Of course lots of flies, too. There shouldn't be that many insects inside the room. They're either getting in somewhere or the door was left open while cleaning maybe? I literally slept with a sheet over my head for both nights. And we had to make sure our bags were closed tightly for fear bugs would get inside luggage. Other things to note, hard to find location especially since GPS is spotty in woods. If driving from main East Glacier, you'll pass a rest stop on your left and a pullout on the right, then immediately after its on the right. No TV in room. WIFI only works in lodge and occasionally at restaurant. Breakfast offered is yogurt and bagels. read more

(Chad, the owner has been trying to gaslight and blame me for HIS staff not communicating reservations and details- see photos below and more explanation at the bottom.) DON'T TRUST THEIR RESERVATIONS! I called and talked to someone months before my wedding for reservations for a rehearsal dinner for 22 people. When I called the owner answered and said they weren't technically open yet for the season, but he could put my reservation in for me. For some reason I had a bad feeling about if he actually got my reservation down so about 2 weeks or so later I called back, talked to someone else, and they said "yes we have you all set for that date and time". Awesome. But I still had a weird gut feeling about it and called a 3rd time about a month before the wedding dinner and they confirmed again they had me down for 22 people. I was reassured now. Someone called me the night before my rehearsal dinner (see the photo of the call log, you can see the person leaving the voicemail said 'I saw you have a reservation for 23 people at 5:30pm', so they DID have me down prior to that phone call) and asked if we were still coming and I said yes. He informed me they couldn't no longer seat me outside only inside, which I said was okay. He confirmed my reservation was set and said "See you tomorrow". The morning of my rehearsal dinner the owner, Chad, called me and was like "I was just told we have you down for a party of 22 tonight and this is my first time hearing of it, you're not on our event schedule". I explained all the times I talked to him and he made the reservation, as well as many other people that confirmed it including the night before and he said I needed to submit a request through the website for the event and that's the only way they can schedule these events. I told him whoever I talked to initially never told me that and said he put me on the event schedule. Chad then proceeded to blame me and belittle me for not doing it "correctly" and basically told me this was my fault, not theirs, and they couldn't seat us. He then said they could seat us but I would have to rent the upper room for $800- again no one EVER told me anything about renting a space when I talked to 3 separate people. We couldn't pay $800 more and now we're out dinner for 22 people that travelled from WI. Luckily I found the Snowgoose restaurant in St Mary and that manager was very nice and accommodated our group for the same evening. Do NOT trust these workers here to tell you the correct information or put it in their event schedule correctly!!! Since the owner still wants to take NO accountability for his actions and again try to blame me and say I never let him know I no longer wanted the reservations (see photo of his reply on my Google review still just blaming me!) I included in this review the photo of me letting Maribeth know I don't need the reservations and she even replied "thank you for letting me know". So again, a lie from the owner to gaslight me (or his staff don't communicate important things, still not my fault) because I DID let them know I didn't need the reservation and we weren't coming. I also updated a photo of my call logs with the restaurant. My initial call where I scheduled the reservation was from my work phone, which I will get that photo of and post that as well. Ted, the owner, spent time with us sharing his story and the history of the lodge. We all agreed it was the best meal we had during our vacation in Montana. We recently had a reservation to stay a night in June at the Summit Mountain Lodge Hotel. This was a very disappointing experience... so much so that our stay on that property literally lasted no longer than 30 minutes. The website pictures of Summit Mountain Lodge are lovely and I was initially very impressed by the good reviews on Trip Advisor. I felt it would suit our needs and wants quite well. Upon our arrival, I wondered if we were in the right place. There wasn't a car in site and the grounds weren't quite as expected from the website pictures. We went into the building and were greeted by a nice young man who checked us in. He did say we were lucky to be in cabin 1 as it was close enough to the main building to get WiFi..., my first red flag. We drove to our cabin. The inside was quite dark, not like the website pictures portray. The two beds were very close together, which is fine, it's a cabin, but the beds were so hard. There was no TV, no WiFi, no deck of cards, no puzzle, no games, nothing to do at all. As we were standing on the porch having a discussion, we noted the trains were very close to the property. From our previous stay at a different location the night before (which was wonderful), we knew those trains run all night, which again is fine except we were so close to the tracks. At that moment, a train fired up and headed out. It was so loud, we could not hear what the other was saying. Guests should be aware that this property is on a very active train track. Be prepared for 6-7 trains screeching, grinding, hissing at night. It sounds like an air brake compressor workshop. It is seriously loud. I decided we would not stay, we would take the loss and that I would talk to the manager about the reasons for our departure. I did not feel the website adequately portrayed Summit Mountain Lodge properly/fairly. Their website should notify guests of the extreme noise, the fact that there is no WiFi in the cabin or TVs. I was met with a manager/owner who had well rehearsed comebacks for every issue I spoke of. He told me they embraced the history of the trains, that most people embraced disconnecting from their phones, WiFi and TV. He said all these points are well documented on the website. He said there are 3 family cabins with TVs and that if I wanted a TV, I should have done my research better in order to make a proper reservation. After I returned home, I went back to the website to try to understand how I could have been so far off on this establishment. The first thing that pops up when you click on the website is a box that says free WiFi included. There is mention of trains and the history but it isn't highlighted in the manner he claims. I would also mention the reviews are mixed with the restaurant reviews. I honestly had to wonder if someone was implementing 5 star reviews for his benefit as I can't imagine so many 5 stars. Of note as well is the owner's response to the more negative reviews is one that is quite rude, that criticizes and slams the guest making the review. I fully expect the same type response with this review. At any rate, this is not a business or establishment that I would ever support or recommend to anyone. As a person who works in hospitality, I am appalled at what I experienced here. read more

Read all the reviews about the lodging as they are mixed in with the restaurant and therefore diluted. The lodging is subpar here, and on top of that, if the basic amenities don't function you're met with poor customer service and non customer centric policies from the establishment. We checked in around 3:30 pm and needed to be up by 4 am for a half marathon, and found no hot water in the Grizzly cabin. We promptly reported it to the front desk and were told,"This happens. It will take hours maybe even tomorrow to get it fixed." To which we asked to speak to the manager and were told "He is too busy right now" Around 2 hours later (After we drove in to town and secured alternative lodging) the owner claims that he is just now hearing about it. We explained we were leaving and wanted a refund because the room was not ready for us (no hot water). This was also paid in full, in advance, 6 months prior, and the lodge is refusing a refund.. Needless to say we didn't stay there without hot water, but given that it was paid in advance we have yet to receive a refund or even basic acknowledgement of the poor service that was provided. In all my domestic and international travelling I have never dealt with customer service this poor. I wish I would have taken the time to read the reviews on the lodge prior, as well as the owners responses. The responses (especially on other review boards) alone show the lackluster attitude towards unsatisfied customers and their refusal to take ownership for any issues, especially one such as this where they failed to provide the services that were paid for. There are other items that would be minor but worth mentioning as well. The site is misleading in that it makes you believe that the lodges are quiet, have wifi access, and that the costs are all inclusive of a normal hotel stay, but.... Its right next to train tracks, wifi is limited or non existent, and if you use the dishes or other items provided you have to clean them or pay extra. I have only ever seen this in AirB&Bs and they notify you upfront and ask if you wish to pay the extra fee. Overall this was the worst experience, at any lodging facility, around the world, that I have ever had and I would avoid this place. read more

We ordered a steak medium and it came out medium well with the ends being all done and tasting chewy. It also didn't taste as good as a $34 ribeye should taste. The owner came over to "explain" it wasn't over done and proceeded to insist we were wrong. We cancelled the order. Never going back. read more

We had a family wedding at the lodge in August 2020. The venue worked out perfectly. There were enough cabins that family and guests were accommodated without having to stay remotely. The rehearsal dinner was held on the steakhouse patio. The food was great and so was the service. The wedding was held on the wilderness overlook. The reception was then held at the pavilion. Great food and service. The pavilion also worked well for the DJ. We even had a rain/hail storm in the middle of the reception and we stayed dry. There are plenty of hiking trails nearby. If you are a mountain biker, the venue is not in Glacier Park so there are biking trails nearby also. There is wifi at the lodge but not at the cabins. I was able to hold a zoom meeting with work while sitting at the lodge patio. There is not cell phone service (I have ATT.) That could be a positive or a negative. Only negative? There was supposed to be a moose in the area but we did not see it. read more

We chose this place to get married in Glacier National park. When we got here we got dinner at the steakhouse and had an excellent meal with excellent service from Tim. During our stay we had dinner here two more times because of how good the food was. The other employee that stood out was Aida she was amazing. As for having our wedding here everything was excellent and Marabeth made the experience very enjoyable and not stressful at all! I can't wait to go back in the future to stay and for dinner! No internet in cabins, from it window glass was cracked upon arrival, some outlets were missing covers (we have a 10 month old who is crawling so this was a major concern). some towels had what appeared to be blood stained. overpriced for what you receive. What a great stay! The views are just stunning. We learned our cabin (the three bears) is currently one of the only ones with TV. If you're like my family, sometimes TOO MUCH togetherness isn't always a good thing so I recommend a cabin with TV considering there's zero cell service on the lot and there's only wifi in the main lodge. The restaurant in the main lodge was the best meal I had in Montana during my one week stay. And the views are unbeatable. My only critique is that the wifi offered in the main lodge is pretty spotty, so don't expect to be able to get much done from a phone or laptop in there. read more

Such a lovely place to stay! Our cabin was beautiful with great views and fairly private. We only stayed a night but wish we had planned to stay longer! The dinner at the restaurant inside was a little pricey but delicious; staff was super friendly and they had live music. There isn't any WiFi in the cabins but there is in the main lodge though a little spotty at times - enough to get some work done if needed. Breakfast is included -- basic morning stuff: fruit, cereal, coffee. It's about an hour or so from the Glacier Park entrance to Going-to-the-sun road. Loved our stay and would definitely come back and stay longer! read more

I would have give this lodge a zero rating and they have no zero rating. I talked to Mara the manager of summit mountain about our stay on 8/14/18 and demanded some kind of refunds for staying in their Grinnell cabin because it was very inconvenient stay with all the mosquitos flying toward the front entrance of the cabin and they were all inside the cabin by night time. The cabin is located very close by the lake with swamp and that attracted many bugs and mosquitos. The side window screen were broken in half and we couldn't open for fresh air and had to kept closed because we saw mosquitos. I tried to call her many time at least five times a day for a follow-up and she finally emailed back and said she tried to connect but I didn't get any voicemails if she said she tried to contact me? On her email, she said unfortunately they live in middle of the forest and mosquitos is something they can't control? Really? I showed her my mosquitos bites overnight as we had to turned on our AC to swayed away mosquitos from bitting us; we have young child in the room and I do not want any harms from getting my child as I'm sure they have children of their own. The discomfort of the AC on during the night was horrible. I would have asked for full refund for this stay. Also we found out in the bathroom when we arrived, there was mold underneath of the shower curtain. Very nasty. This is the worst stay I've ever been in. Do not stay in Summit Mountain if I were you. read more

My husband and I were driving back to Columbia Falls from St Mary and did a quick internet search for a good place to stop for dinner. There were numerous stellar reviews for the restaurant at Summit Mountain Lodge, and still our experience there far exceeded our expectations! The dining room is charming, the staff were friendly and courteous, the food was fresh and delicious, the views spectacular, and one of the owners, Ted, took the time to share with us some valuable tips for hiking in the park, as well as a brief history of their time at Summit Mountain Lodge. We will return there, possibly to try one of their cabins, the next time we are in this beautiful part of the country. read more

My husband and I stayed at Summit Mountain Lodge for 5 nights July 11-15 and found it to be fantastic. We can't recommend it highly enough. The cabins felt rustic but at once really comfortable (air conditioning, full bath /electricity provided). Setting was gorgeous with big mountains and a wetlands right behind, with back porch overlooks for the east cabins. The location is near the main railroad as well, but the sound truly didn't disturb us--we found that the passing trains added to the charm. The owners and staff bent over backwards to be helpful and friendly. There is a lovely restaurant right onsite (dinner only plus muffins /coffee for breakfast--but there are outrageously good breakfast options just 10 minutes down the road in East Glacier). Very convenient to Two Medicine Lake--not as much to other parts of the park, but Two Medicine is well worth a visit. We'll definitely seek to go back again. read more
