This cemetery is locally owned, non-denominational, and a non profit. I have several family members buried here dating back 20 years now and I have been on the grounds often over the last 20 years. Where my family is buried, the grounds are well kept. I do bring my own scissors and trim around the headstones, but the grounds are mowed and I see nothing wrong when I come to switch out my loved ones flowers. Driving through even as a teen visiting here, I thought it was beautiful cemetery. Estate planning is never a fun topic, but a necessary one. I dropped by the office last week with some questions and I had. Charles was able to assist Jolene and Fred who went above and beyond to help me. Jolene was the sweetest and she was able to address every concern I had. I made an appointment with Jolene to come back next month, so I can move forward with my plot selection and final details. I'll feel better once I've completed all of my estate planning, so my children aren't burdened after we're gone. The prices are a bit higher for plots than our Mother of Sorrow down the road, but I want to be closer to my family. Not a dig at Our Mother of Sorrows, but I was there last week to visit a cousin that was recently buried and our aunt who passed in 2022. I was mortified to see a pile of headstones in the sandy area below of the garden where our aunt is buried. I have never seen this in the past 20 years at Mountain View Cemetery. I have read some horrid reviews for this cemetery, but that isn't my family's experience here or even close. I have personally dealt with Charles for my last two family funerals and he made it a breeze, so I could return to my grief. Thank you Jolene, Fred and Charles. Our family mistakenly overpaid $75 for cremation services for my aunt. Mountain View refunded the money in a check made out to my aunt's estate. However, there was no estate, and consequently, no estate account. I called them to inquire if the check could be reissued, but I was met with a curt and rude response from a person named Michelle. She informed me that the only option was to wait for the funds to become "unclaimed property" in the State of Nevada. Our son died in November 2022 and he is buried in a beautiful spot at Mountain View Cemetery in Reno, Nevada. Mr. Charles Stegmeir, Office Manager, has been a continuing source of information, help and grief management for my wife and I from that extreme emotional time when we were forced by tragic circumstance to consult for a place to bury our son. Children should not precede their parents with death, but that is what happened and Mr. Stegmeir was just the perfect person to help two parents wholly engrossed in grief to somehow move forward through life's most difficult challenge. He continues to provide that help nearly 2 years later. Words will never succeed in describing how much of a debt of gratitude to Mr. Stegmeir and to Mountain View Cemetery we owe. Having read on Yelp some very scathing reviews of Mountain View Cemetery, just as you have read on this site, we can not speak for others. We can, however, willingly provide an opinion in contradistinction to theirs. Ours is a very positive opinion. Some information is in order. Mountain View Cemetery is a Non Profit Cemetery owned by Oddfellows Lodge #14 in Reno. As a Non Profit it is subject to limitations not imposed on for profit cemeteries. The IRS defines a Non Profit Cemetery limitations essentially as follows: Only for the necessary expenses of operating, maintaining, and improving the place. The funds can be used to buy new cemetery properties. They may set up a reserve for the cemetery, for its care, and for any other ordinary or necessary purpose. Much criticism, some of it scathing, from other reviewers has attempted to shame the maintenance and upkeep along with the "rudeness" of the staff. We have not found either of those critical charges to have merit. Take a look at the gorgeous view from this cemetery. Just go to the homepage for pictures. They do not exaggerate the sublime beauty and peacefulness of this location. The abundance of geese on the grounds add to the serene and peaceful ambience, however they also add to maintenance problems as well. As to the "shameful maintenance": the ground itself is indeed uneven in some places, more than others. Families have the option to put in work orders with Mr. Stegmeir for their individual loved ones burial location. It is probably worse in the older sections where settling over a longer time has occurred and there are fewer to no family members available to place a work order. The very nature of the Non Profit status of Mountain View Cemetery means that at present there is a minimal ground crew. Increasing the size of the ground crew in the future is a laudable goal for Mountain View Cemetery as they deal with the financial constraints of their Non Profit status. The rule for new burials is to limit the monuments to ground level plaques, but the reason for this is that limitation is to allow for mowing of the grass as part of the maintenance. The grass is maintained also by a sprinkler system throughout the cemetery with each section watered and mowed once a week, more frequent watering if it is drier. Yes, individual markers can become overgrown to a small extent, but families can put in work orders with the cemetery to resolve that problem. No family is prohibited from incorporating some small amount of additional care by solving that problem with their own hands when they visit their loved ones' grave. At least for ourselves, we view the task as more therapeutic and an essential part of our grief management rather than a bother. Our interaction with the Mr. Stegmeir and the staff has been just the opposite of rudeness. He and his staff could not have been more congenial and supportive. The condition of the cemetery is disgusting. Some graves are sinking, some are flooded from poor sprinkler care, some are so overgrown you can't tell who they are. the first mausoleum on the left as you enter has hunks falling out of the outside wall and holes in the sidewalk, it's disgusting how careless and lazy the people that work there are. They should all be ashamed and or fired. And whomever is in charge should be held accountable for this. There should be a fine for the terrible condition things are in. The City of Reno and the County of Washoe should be ashamed for ignoring this as well. And for what they change to bury someone... there shouldn't be a blade of grass that is out of place. The whole staff is disgusting. And so is the condition of the cemetery. Shame on all of you. There should also be a directory of where to locate a grave that is available 24/7. As for the people posting that the cemetery is beautiful and well maintained, have you actually looked around??????? Are you blind??? My dad had purchased some burial plots at the cemetery a few years ago. In March 2020, he decided to plan his funeral. I believe Paul helped him then. And Paul was the one to help my family and I put it all together today. My dad passed away at Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto, CA. I had no idea how to get his body back to Reno. But Paul and the staff at Mountain View were so patient and resourceful! They orchestrated the whole process for me! I am still grieving so its hard to write a full review. My dad passed away on September 8th, 2020. But the funeral was today (the 21st). I just wanted to make sure everyone knows how good this funeral home is! They will help you with everything! I come to the cemetery at least once a year, sometimes twice, to lay flowers at a grave for a loved one. It is very quiet and peaceful. I find it to be an absolutely beautiful place and is very well taken care of. The slight interactions I've had with various staff have been pleasant. We've had a couple of funerals here as well for my great grandparents over the years and each were very well put together and lovely despite such a hard time for our family. read more

Staff is rude. Cemetery is falling apart. Work orders take MONTHS to be completed and then aren't actually completed fully.

On the plus side, you can save money on your marker knowing that in a few short years, it will be completely overgrown with grass and invisible to anyone but some future archaeologist. On the downside, if you think the purpose of a marker is to memorialize someone, then you'll be very disappointed. On a recent visit, not long after Memorial Day, the day we remember the veterans who sacrificed all for their country, the markers in the veterans area were all but completely obscured by grass. In stark contrast, in the Masonic Cemetery that shares the same grounds, the markers were extremely well-tended, grass was trimmed, markers had been edged, and the markers were plainly visible and easy to find. read more

My Grandparents and Mother are buried there. When they were buried this was a well maintained cemetery. On my last visit I found a disgraceful weed infested, overgrown grass, zillions of Geese Poop infested last resting place. Finding the grave plaques was an exercise in frustration, crawling over Geese Droppings and pulling out grass and weeds. When I talked to the office I was told they do only minimal maintenance on the grounds and will uncover a grace marker only on request. When asked why they don't have some dogs to chase the Geese off or some other system I was told that would be cruel Shame on Reno for allowing this happen, putting the welfare of the Geese ahead of and disrespecting all the Reno Citizens that were buried there when it was maintained as a honored burial site. read more

Since no one gets out of this life alive it's good to have a good funeral home/cemetery around. From my Great Grandmother to my resent loss, some of my family have taken up permanent residence at Mountain View. They offer a variety of services from the traditional viewing and wakes to remembrances. My family has leaned towards remembrances for the last 3 decades. From my grandmother's 1 1/2 hour service may years ago to the most recent 20 minutes done service, Mountain View caters to the family's wants. The grounds are maintained as well as can be expected in Reno's long drought to this year's too much snow and rain. They do the best they can, some part of the property is always being maintained/repaired. Warning you might want to check the grounds watering schedule. The Mountain View Cemetery website states,"Our beautiful grounds and high standards of maintenance allow friends, families and visitors the opportunity to enjoy peace and serenity while paying their respects to loved ones." Our experience is that there is no 'high standard of maintenance' for our sweet daughter's burial site. It has been grossly neglected and is nothing but weeds and dirt. We do not feel 'peace or serenity' when we visit as all we feel is frustration, disappointment and anger over the gross neglect of her burial site. Incredibly disappointing. read more

It is sort of hard to review a cemetery. The reason being it is more of what I wish it should be as apposed to what it is. My whole family, immediate family that is, is buried here. The folks who work here are kind and helpful whenever you need a question answered or setting up a burial. What I do not like is that fact that they do not allow an upright headstone or a large memorial building. The reason told to us it is easier for them to maintain the grass, no edging and such. So we have the flat plaque on the ground and those often sink a bit. The grass then grows over these and they of course did not want to edge around structures they sure as hell are not going to edge around the plaques. So if one wanders around you will see a whole lot of unreadable graves. We of course keep ours cleared. I know this is not a big deal but it bugs me. I want a huge personal Mausoleum ;-{) read more
