I spoke too soon. You know how when you can have an extraordinary dinner at a new restaurant and…read morethen return, only to discover that the first experience was an outlier? You realize they may hit it out of the park sometimes, but they are also unreliable; inconsistent. And so is Shawn Robbins aka Robbins Renovations. I arranged for him to do additional work: more painting, repairing an exterior structure and a tile installation on our kitchen island. Trying to get him to provide an estimate or a date to start was like pulling teeth. I communicated to Shawn that I had a deadline in mind, and while he wouldn't commit to specific dates, he stated that he could get it done in my time frame. When I received the estimate, I was shocked at the tile labor amount: $3,300. Not only is it not a large area at 60 sq ft, but the tiles are all the same color and shape and no special cutting is required beyond the ends. I questioned Shawn as to how he arrived at this amount. This was on a Monday. He replied on Friday saying he had not seen my email until then and that he would reply in detail soon. I never heard from him again. Moreover, he lied about not seeing my email. On Wednesday he posted on his Facebook page asking what others charge for tile work (!) And he expressed surprise at how much less they would charge per square foot. The real "crime" here is that the same Shawn who did such an excellent job in the first instance, acted extraordinarily immature and rude in the second: he ghosted me. He chose not to "deal," preferring to abandon a good business relationship. With better communication, we might have moved forward--and he could have been forthright and said he wasn't qualified to do the tile. All told, Shawn can be a good contractor and a "good guy"--IF you catch him on the right day or season. But beware of a sudden and inconvenient lack of professionalism.
