The presentation is great, 5/5 for the wooden boards and the cute plating. Surprisingly, the curry was spicy. I liked the hint of spice but my friend who didn't like it took a while to adjust. I didn't think Japanese curry was spicy. The price was a little up there for the quality and quantity of the food. Almost $20 for a curry. Hmm. It was good curry but not amazing to justify the price. The increasing number of food selections in Vancouver really goes to show how our food scene is evolving. Similar to Tonkatsu, Gyukatsu is rare beef tenderloin battered with panko breadcrumbs. It's served with a hot stone plate that allows you to grill the cut of steak to your liking. The innovative dish gained its popularity in Japan around 2015-2016 and can now be found in various spots in our city. I tried their Gyukatsu set and charcoaled fried chicken. Mr. Black's rendition of Gyukatsu is quite delectable, but on the pricier side and very small portions for what you're paying for. I returned for their Hokkaido Milk chicken hot pot and butter beer. From since my last visit they've added more items to the menu that are more affordable and tailored to the winter months. Milk chicken hotpot (4/5): My first time having milk hot pot was amazing and I expected nothing less from Mr Black which was in my opinion just as good. Last time I had it with seafood but Mr. Black's hot pot had both chicken and seafood (fish balls, fish siu mai). This is one for great value. I believe it was around $15. You also get a bowl of rice and two pieces of grapefruit and a spicy szechuan dipping sauce. My only concern is that my chicken will likely be overcooked before I can get to it and that the hot pot is way too high for my liking. They should get something lower like boiling point. But soup base was good. Mapo Curry Pork (3/5): Portion size is bigger than the dishes that I previously had. The pork was tender. I can't comment much about the sauce because I'm not a fan of Japanese curry don't have much knowledge of its authentic taste. I can say that it's not spicy considering 'mapo' being in front of it. Chicken Kaarage (3.5/5): I like how light the batter is on the chicken kaarage. The meat was tender and juicy. This could easily be my favourite of the night but ... after getting to my third piece I could taste that they reused the oil a bit too much. It is time for a change. Butter Beer (4/5): A beer jug filled with root beer and topped with salty cream and lemon or lime zest. I like this drink. Maybe 'cause I have a thing for cream top drinks that are salty haha. No complaints in regards to service. Oh you do get a complimentary edamame when you are seated. It's seasoned with some szechuan salt and will numb your lips when you eat them. My fiancé and I first tried gyu katsu (deep fried beef cutlets) at Gyūkatsu Motomura in Tokyo almost two years ago. We were completely blown away by how delicious it was, so when we heard there was a restaurant serving gyu katsu in Richmond, we knew we had to try it! Mr. Black is located on the 2nd floor of Aberdeen Centre (where Guu used to be). They don't take reservations, so we got there around 7pm to grab a seat. It was surprisingly empty for a Friday night (I think there were three tables). Since our friends were running late, we told them we would come back around 7:30pm. When we went back, it was even emptier (just 2 tables left). I noticed there was a table with a "Reserved" sign on it. I wasn't sure it if was ours, but sure enough, we were led to that table. Totally unnecessary, considering the restaurant was basically empty... but I had a nice chuckle from that. My fiancé and I split the following: Wagyu Beef and Foie Gras Korokke $16 Wagyu Beef Set (80g) $28.99 New York Steak Set (150g) $27.99 I love foie gras, so I was really excited to try the wagyu beef and foie gras korokke. Unfortunately, all I could taste was potato. The filling was a mix of mashed potato, chunky potato, and a few bits of ground beef. Foie gras was nowhere to be found. I understand that the foie gras may have melted into the rest of the filling during the deep fry process, but I couldn't taste it at all. For $16, I was extremely disappointed. The wagyu beef set came in two sizes: 80g or 120g. Since the 80g set was already $28.99, we decided to go with the smaller portion, then get another New York steak set which is a lot more budget friendly ($27.99 for 150g). Each set also comes with a bowl of rice, salad, and miso soup. The beef katsu is deep fried, then cut into slices. You can clearly see that it's completely rare inside. All beef sets come with a little stone grill - the idea is to grill the beef to your desired doneness. Unfortunately, the stone grill wasn't hot enough, so our beef didn't get much colour and took forever to cook. While the Wagyu beef was noticeably better than the New York steak, I probably wouldn't get it again. Actually, to be completely honest, I don't think I'll ever come back to this restaurant again. Sure, the concept is the same as Gyūkatsu Motomura in Tokyo, but they are severely lacking in quality and execution. For the price, I expected a lot more. TLDR; Interesting dining experience if you've never tried it, but food is subpar and quite expensive. I won't be returning. read more

Originally saw a beef katsu video on Facebook from a restaurant in Japan and thought that it's so exciting! Then Mr Black opened so I went with high hopes that it would be as delicious as it looked in the video. Took the wagyu beef set, but very disappointing. It did not taste like any other wagyu beef I had, just tasteless and very chewy. My husband took the blackened pork katsu set which tasted better than the wagyu set. For the price of $28.99, it was a meal filled with disappointment and regrets. Could have went somewhere for a much better lunch. Service was wonderful, very nice and caring servers. The restaurant was not busy, had 2-3 tables other than us. A nice and different dining experience, but won't be going back for sure. read more

Ordered the blackened pork curry. It came with rice, soup, and a drink. Thought it was really delicious! It came a little bit spicy already so for those who can't eat their food a little hot, this might not be for you. I would definitely recommend this dish! I also ordered the fried diced blacken wagyu beef and it was quite disappointing. It doesn't taste like any other "wagyu" I've ever had... it was just like normal beef. Wasn't worth the $24 at all... Tried the wagyukatsu set. The meat was good, and you can reheat the steak if it get cold. You actually need the reheating because the meat, being perfectly medium rare when served, cools down within 10 mins. Their rice was bad for the price. Soggy and tasteless. Heard about this new establishment from my partner and we decided to venture into it's premise today. Surprisingly there wasn't a wait and we were seated immediately. We ordered the Yuzu Infused Burdock and Fried Chicken for appetizers. For our main course, we got the New York Steak and Blackened Pork. The Blackened Pork was alright, and we both liked the New York Steak better. Plus it was also quite fun that we get to cook it ourselves on the hot stone that they have on the side. The star of the dish for me however, is the Fried Chicken. It wasn't as crispy as I had hoped but it definitely had the flavours. We finished our meal with an Earl Grey Creme Brûlée and Deep Fried Banana. The Banana was alright, but the Creme Brûlée was fantastic! What I really liked about this restaurant is the food presentation! Especially for the desserts. Price aside, I really do think this place is a good find. Plus, the waiters and waitress are really polite as well. Would definitely try again if I'm craving for some comfort food. read more

Meticulous. Sophisticated. Unique. That is how I would summarize my experience at Mr. Black yesterday that we stumbled upon. Although pricier than would be sustainable for regular visits, I certainly plan to come back for special occasions or sudden cravings. Things I noted as we were sitting at the bar and could see into the kitchen area: - absolutely meticulous with plating and presentation. Even if a piece of rice looked off, it was picked off the plate. Each plate was wiped so that any sauce that splashed up would be cleaned. And once, a bit of the soup spilled onto the board of a hot pot dish and I saw the 2 people coordinate to wipe the bottom of the bowl and then place everything on a new board. - our neighbors had one of their dishes delayed for some reason; they were offered a drink or dessert on the house, which I thought was great business etiquette We ordered blackened fried tofu (not sure what the black stuff is and didn't have a chance to ask), Hokkaido chicken milk hot pot, and mapo curry pork. Not sure why this place would demand such a premium for their "Wagyu" beef when it wasn't even tender?! The hot plate to supposedly "grill" it wasn't even hot enough... This place is such an underrated gem inside of Aberdeen. The guy katsu served here is better than many I'd tried while visiting Japan. Excellent service and fair prices allow for you to get your katsu in any imaginable way. I highly recommend eating here. Keep this restaurant open! read more

After almost a year of this being on my list I finally had the motivation to go since there was a break in the weather. I got out of school early that day and had some time to kill and since I was already in the Abeerden area I went for it. It was busy, however, not too busy that I was able to get a table. The first thing that grabbed my attention was the Earl Grey Tea Creme Brulee. I was good and had dessert last, it was something worth mentioning first. I had the grilled tuna and a side of rice, something healthy and simple. I was served the tuna fast and it tasted good. Now onto the creme brulee....the dessert after my own heart. It was a creme brulee with Earl Grey notes. A good balance between the two. Nice and creamy and the brulee was nicely torched and cracked nicely. read more

It was exceptional in taste, presentation and service.....the selection was original and varied the ingredients were very fresh.....we enjoyed flavorful chicken, beef coated in a crunchy charcoal coating....and a stew of meat in a delicately flavored milkbased broth....the creme brulee dessert was creamy, not too sweet and adorned with the freshest fruit.....the vegetable salad was tasty and the passionfruit dressing was light and delicious...the feied banans topped off the meal beautifully........i highly recommend this restaurant read more
