    Wagyu Beef Set
    Queenie C.

Originally saw a beef katsu video on Facebook from a restaurant in Japan and thought that it's so exciting! Then Mr Black opened so I went with high hopes that it would be as delicious as it looked in the video. Took the wagyu beef set, but very disappointing. It did not taste like any other wagyu beef I had, just tasteless and very chewy. My husband took the blackened pork katsu set which tasted better than the wagyu set. For the price of $28.99, it was a meal filled with disappointment and regrets. Could have went somewhere for a much better lunch. Service was wonderful, very nice and caring servers. The restaurant was not busy, had 2-3 tables other than us. A nice and different dining experience, but won't be going back for sure.

Wagyu Beef with Rice, Salad, and Soup + free coke. ($28.99+tax) I think it was a promo for a free coke on the combo I got. I had to grill the beef for 5 sec each side. It was quite tender! Not bad at all! However, it is quite expensive.... Tbh, the food isn't worth the price at all. Salmon & Mentaiko Korokke ($12+tax) was alright. It took awhile to be served. I couldn't taste the salmon & mentaiko. Was a bit disappointed for this. Was looking forward to this cuz I love Korokke~~ Sigh

Tried the wagyukatsu set. The meat was good, and you can reheat the steak if it get cold. You actually need the reheating because the meat, being perfectly medium rare when served, cools down within 10 mins. Their rice was bad for the price. Soggy and tasteless. They need to change either the rice cooker or the cook who boiled it. I am still curious about the other dishes, and probably will come back to update.

Tasty food and good experience. The beef is unbelievably tender and Oya Ko Don has very rich flavor!

Extraordinary presentation, a bit of Japanese delicacy. Tasty and surprise you with special flavor with their special sauce per dish.

    Blackened fried tofu

Meticulous. Sophisticated. Unique. That is how I would summarize my experience at Mr. Black yesterday that we stumbled upon. Although pricier than would be sustainable for regular visits, I certainly plan to come back for special occasions or sudden cravings. Things I noted as we were sitting at the bar and could see into the kitchen area: - absolutely meticulous with plating and presentation. Even if a piece of rice looked off, it was picked off the plate. Each plate was wiped so that any sauce that splashed up would be cleaned. And once, a bit of the soup spilled onto the board of a hot pot dish and I saw the 2 people coordinate to wipe the bottom of the bowl and then place everything on a new board. - our neighbors had one of their dishes delayed for some reason; they were offered a drink or dessert on the house, which I thought was great business etiquette We ordered blackened fried tofu (not sure what the black stuff is and didn't have a chance to ask), Hokkaido chicken milk hot pot, and mapo curry pork. Would have them all again. We also go the free butter beer for posting a pic on social media (was delicious and would totally want that again).

The black pork is really dry. I had a high expectation to come to this place. The coquette i ordered were saggy as well. The food overall is not as good as expected.

Service slow. They are trying too hard to be Japanese food but you can't hide that it is Chinese. Very pricy and not lot of food choice.

The staffs/owner were very friendly and made great recommendations. Had the hamachi carpaccio, so refreshing and appetizing. The homemade ponzu (lemony) sauce has a nice finish with thin sliced onions and veggies. The Engawa Arburi nigiri was recommended, and it was phenomenal. It is the 'fin edge' of flounder. Super delicate, with seared (arburi) flavor and melts in your mouth. Yum! The other highlight was the Wagyu beef cubes severed on stick. Two skewers 4 cubes each. The Wagyu was perfectly cooked. It melts in your mouth with every bite. We also enjoyed the 7 piece Omakase sushi set. The fish was very fresh and satiating. Love the lotus root chips garnishing. We loved everything we had but would likely skip the Omakase appetizer Platter. Perhaps we were spoiled by the hamachi carpaccio appetizer. We still enjoyed it but For the same price, we would prefer the sushi set. It had 9 small plates in a beautiful serving box including- tiny sashimi cube of salmon, tuna, tamago, and my fav is the komochi nishin (herring fillets ("Nishin") layered over a base of crunchy capelin roe), also included in the tiny plates of apps were, chicken karaage, baby taco, sliced taco, taco in red sauce, and seaweed salad. We look forward to be back!!!!!

The menu contains a variety of rice combo dishes that you can select (pork, chicken, beef, fois gras, curry) and a tempura noodle set as well. Occasionally, they also have specials as well. My boyfriend and I ordered the beef set and the tempura noodle set with pork. I love how there are a variety of side dishes that come with the set. This is great for those who like variety and want to have a complete meal with all the food groups. My favourite is definitely the pickled daikon/carrot and the cabbage salad! The food is not too salty and the broth was perfectly seasoned for my palate. My boyfriend also ordered an espresso romano which I had never tried before. The foam on top was surprisingly refreshing with a tart aftertaste of lime. The prices were also very fair with most sets averaging around $19-20 before tax. You order at the counter and pay after you're finished. This is a great place for a quick bite especially if you're in the Ironwood area of Richmond.

When I first walked in, we see the setup is very traditional Japanese style with small dividers and booths. The waitress took me to our booth, and left the tablet for me to use to order food. I like how they provide tablet and also have the option to order by scanning the QR code. We ordered several dishes to share. The aburi sushi set was one of the highlights. It came with 7 pieces of different kind of Aburi sushi. We like how they torched not only the tipping, but also the rice. It added so much flavor to it. The Taco wasabi was also very refreshing. My first bite had a kick to it, then I got used to the wasabi. We also got to try some of the bbq dishes, such as the Gyutan (beef Tongue) and the Ton Toro (pork belly). The Sukiyaki beef nabe was delicious, however, it was very salty, and ot was over killed by salt. The Foie gras fried rice was suppose to be one of the most anticipated dish, however, it was a little underwhelming. We could find a lot of foie Gras, which was a bit disappointing. The service was decent, They even changed our plates during our meals. The food came out very quick after we ordered. However, for some reason, they didn't like to communicate with English. Every time when I spoke English, the waitress spoke Chinese back to me. See I'm not sure why. Overall, it was a pretty nice place for small group gatherings. It's a bit pricey, but the quality was there.

They told us to join the google waitlist when we wanted to come in so we checked about an hour beforehand and there was no active waitlist online. We were seriously refreshing the screen as we were driving over to the restaurant. When we got to the restaurant they told us to join the waitlist and lo and behold there were already 5 people ahead of us!! The restaurant is small and the waiting area even smaller -- with 5 ahead of us we ended up waiting about an hour!! We got the dinner sets of soba/sushi, chirashi, and unagi. Everything tasted solid but seems small for the price. My little (who doesn't eat much) finished the whole meal set and said she was only 50% full and proceeded to eat snacks in the car after dinner. The staff spoke Japanese so you know it's pretty authentic but for the price and the wait, it could've delivered more.

This location is inside the CF Richmond Center mall. My party of 4 was able to get seated immediately on a Saturday around 12:45pm. Once seated, there will be a paper where you can individually mark your order at each person's seat. I opted to get the 6 hand roll set along with the salmon aburi oshi. The salmon oshi was very meh IMO, but some others in my party liked it. It was kind of tasteless to me, and the servers suggested not having it with soy sauce, but my friends said it actually tasted better with soy sauce. As for the hand rolls, they were pretty good; my favorites were the toro and the truffle lobster, which is more unique and not something I usually see at other hand roll bars. Service was generally quite good, with our waters and ginger being refilled. We were also offered an explanation of the menu when we were seated as it was our first time dining here. However I feel like the wait time between rolls was a bit of a let down. Similar to some other hand roll bars I've been to, it seems like the order in which parties were served was kind of random. For example, other parties would get 2-3 hand rolls in a row before we got one. Also, even within my party, 2 people got 2 hand rolls in a row before I even got one. It was a bit strange and I wish the service was a bit more balanced. Pricing was also on the higher side - the hand rolls aren't super big so even a 6 set hand roll ($39) didn't leave me feeling completely full.
