    Wagyu Beef Set
    Queenie C.

Originally saw a beef katsu video on Facebook from a restaurant in Japan and thought that it's so exciting! Then Mr Black opened so I went with high hopes that it would be as delicious as it looked in the video. Took the wagyu beef set, but very disappointing. It did not taste like any other wagyu beef I had, just tasteless and very chewy. My husband took the blackened pork katsu set which tasted better than the wagyu set. For the price of $28.99, it was a meal filled with disappointment and regrets. Could have went somewhere for a much better lunch. Service was wonderful, very nice and caring servers. The restaurant was not busy, had 2-3 tables other than us. A nice and different dining experience, but won't be going back for sure.

Wagyu Beef with Rice, Salad, and Soup + free coke. ($28.99+tax) I think it was a promo for a free coke on the combo I got. I had to grill the beef for 5 sec each side. It was quite tender! Not bad at all! However, it is quite expensive.... Tbh, the food isn't worth the price at all. Salmon & Mentaiko Korokke ($12+tax) was alright. It took awhile to be served. I couldn't taste the salmon & mentaiko. Was a bit disappointed for this. Was looking forward to this cuz I love Korokke~~ Sigh

Tried the wagyukatsu set. The meat was good, and you can reheat the steak if it get cold. You actually need the reheating because the meat, being perfectly medium rare when served, cools down within 10 mins. Their rice was bad for the price. Soggy and tasteless. They need to change either the rice cooker or the cook who boiled it. I am still curious about the other dishes, and probably will come back to update.

Tasty food and good experience. The beef is unbelievably tender and Oya Ko Don has very rich flavor!

Extraordinary presentation, a bit of Japanese delicacy. Tasty and surprise you with special flavor with their special sauce per dish.

    Blackened fried tofu

Meticulous. Sophisticated. Unique. That is how I would summarize my experience at Mr. Black yesterday that we stumbled upon. Although pricier than would be sustainable for regular visits, I certainly plan to come back for special occasions or sudden cravings. Things I noted as we were sitting at the bar and could see into the kitchen area: - absolutely meticulous with plating and presentation. Even if a piece of rice looked off, it was picked off the plate. Each plate was wiped so that any sauce that splashed up would be cleaned. And once, a bit of the soup spilled onto the board of a hot pot dish and I saw the 2 people coordinate to wipe the bottom of the bowl and then place everything on a new board. - our neighbors had one of their dishes delayed for some reason; they were offered a drink or dessert on the house, which I thought was great business etiquette We ordered blackened fried tofu (not sure what the black stuff is and didn't have a chance to ask), Hokkaido chicken milk hot pot, and mapo curry pork. Would have them all again. We also go the free butter beer for posting a pic on social media (was delicious and would totally want that again).

The black pork is really dry. I had a high expectation to come to this place. The coquette i ordered were saggy as well. The food overall is not as good as expected.

Service slow. They are trying too hard to be Japanese food but you can't hide that it is Chinese. Very pricy and not lot of food choice.

The menu contains a variety of rice combo dishes that you can select (pork, chicken, beef, fois gras, curry) and a tempura noodle set as well. Occasionally, they also have specials as well. My boyfriend and I ordered the beef set and the tempura noodle set with pork. I love how there are a variety of side dishes that come with the set. This is great for those who like variety and want to have a complete meal with all the food groups. My favourite is definitely the pickled daikon/carrot and the cabbage salad! The food is not too salty and the broth was perfectly seasoned for my palate. My boyfriend also ordered an espresso romano which I had never tried before. The foam on top was surprisingly refreshing with a tart aftertaste of lime. The prices were also very fair with most sets averaging around $19-20 before tax. You order at the counter and pay after you're finished. This is a great place for a quick bite especially if you're in the Ironwood area of Richmond.

My friend chose this place to celebrate his birthday, as he heard good things. It was a week day…read morerainy day, and the restaurant was pretty quiet. When I first walked in, we see the setup is very traditional Japanese style with small dividers and booths. The waitress took me to our booth, and left the tablet for me to use to order food. I like how they provide tablet and also have the option to order by scanning the QR code. We ordered several dishes to share. The aburi sushi set was one of the highlights. It came with 7 pieces of different kind of Aburi sushi. We like how they torched not only the tipping, but also the rice. It added so much flavor to it. The Taco wasabi was also very refreshing. My first bite had a kick to it, then I got used to the wasabi. We also got to try some of the bbq dishes, such as the Gyutan (beef Tongue) and the Ton Toro (pork belly). The Sukiyaki beef nabe was delicious, however, it was very salty, and ot was over killed by salt. The Foie gras fried rice was suppose to be one of the most anticipated dish, however, it was a little underwhelming. We could find a lot of foie Gras, which was a bit disappointing. The service was decent, They even changed our plates during our meals. The food came out very quick after we ordered. However, for some reason, they didn't like to communicate with English. Every time when I spoke English, the waitress spoke Chinese back to me. See I'm not sure why. Overall, it was a pretty nice place for small group gatherings. It's a bit pricey, but the quality was there.

You can also do individual orders but we opted for set 3. For 6 different hand rolls, all served one after you consume one they make your next roll. As a result, each roll you eat has a fresh crunchy nori and warm rice. The 6 kinds we had were negitoro, yellow tail, king salmon, Hokkaido scallop, snow crab and truffle lobster. All of them were good, my favorite ones are: Hokkaido scallop and truffle lobster. You think it's not enough but you actually feel it's perfect and just enough for your meal. Good service. They are friendly, attentive and helpful people. Nice clean restaurant. Very interesting concept. I will try it again .

They all look alike from the outside, but each one had a different taste, texture and flavor. All the fish and seafood tasted fresh, served with warm sushi rice and rolled like a cigar with a crispy seaweed wrapper. Each one was about 3-4 bites dipped in wasabi soy sauce. Our server was fantastic. We didn't get her name, but she's from Ontario. She's been there almost a year. She's very professional, but cheery, warm and friendly. We love how the hand rolls are served by the chefs who prepare them and done at well unhurried pace---always keeping a watchful eye on the guest. The restaurant is really a big bar which makes sense in this kind of experience. The design is sleek, modern with an eye catching ceiling design. It's located by one of the entrances of CF Richmond Centre Mall. We were happily satiated, but didn't feel full.
