Disappointing; we've loved Mr Chen's for years and fo their often to purchase food from the market. Ordered takeout for lunch today. It was supposed to be 20 min, which was somewhat unusual because it was already 12:50, after the typical Sunday noon rush. Food took 38 min. Then evidently the lunch menu has changed because the price was $10 each for a relatively small lunch portion with rice and an egg roll. No soup doe take out. I ordered the cashew chicken, which was good, but literally only 3 cashews in it. May as well just call it Chicken. Two whole smallish cashews and 2 halves. Just disappointing. read more

I had a very good experience at this restaurant! My sister and I were visiting my aunt and she took us to Mr. Chen's. We ordered wonton soup, egg drop soup, some steamed dumplings, chicken lettuce wraps, the basil chicken, and the roasted duck and rice. We got our food very quickly and EVERYTHING tasted absolutely amazing! It tasted so authentic and good. The server was also very nice and attentive. Came here twice for bubble tea and for me personally I enjoyed it. They gave me plenty of tapioca balls which I was very happy about. I ended up paying a little over $4 for it which is kinda high in my opinion but worth it. I was looking for something different for Chinese takeout, because most Chinese American restaurants in Montgomery are exactly the same. My sister recommended Mr. Chen's. So I called in a takeout order. For apps, I got egg rolls, spicy beef tendon (cold dish), and spicy pork ear (cold dish). I got salted crispy chicken and crispy intestines for entrees. And I got a Thai milk tea (boba tea). I've had boba teas before plenty of times, but never this flavor. And except for the egg rolls, I had never seen any of the other items on a Chinese menu in Montgomery. EVERYTHING was SO good, I highly recommend all of it! Next time I go, I plan to spend some time browsing the grocery before getting my food. Definitely check this place out if you're looking for different, delicious Chinese in town. In town for work staying the night at a hotel nearby and used Yelp to find an Asian restaurant. Mr Chen's is located in the far corner not quite visible from the street. Walking in it looks like a grocery store at first, till I saw the restaurant to the left. I ordered the beef noodles but requested mild as I'm not huge on hot spicy noodles. When my noodles arrived, I had my expectations low because I am in Alabama after all. But on my first bite, I realized it was delicious! Ok it was not handmade noodles like what I'm used to in California, but the noodles used goes well with the flavorful broth. The meat was a little chewy so I knocked one star off. There are some good options here besides the standard Americanized Chinese fare -- I tried the chicken in black bean sauce and the salted crispy chicken, and both were excellent. If you ARE craving some of that American-Chinese food (and I don't blame you if you do), those dishes are well-made here as well. We ordered orange chicken and cashew chicken for the kids and they were well satisfied. Was very happy to see a boba tea menu as well, since I am a big fan of boba and didn't think I'd be able to find a good source in Montgomery. Okay, this is as close as I can get around here to my grandmother's cooking. They started putting hot oil on the tables at the restaurants which is nice but I would prefer the crisp with peanuts as opposed to the black bean hot oil. That's purely a personal thing though. My friend and I had lunch at Mr. Chens' Chinese restaurant in Montgomery, Alabama. We ordered our main course from the lunch menu and also ordered the steamed bite size pork dumplings as our appetizer. So we both literally had one dipped in their soy sauce dip. After I had my first one, although I thought it kind of tasted funny, I didn't think much about it and just went ahead and ate it. Then when my friend started to eat her second one, I got another one and opened it; looked at the meat; and, OMG!!! it was raw pork! I was so concerned about food poisoning and I asked the person in charged to look at the food. She apologized and offered us not to pay for our meals - she literally offered anything she could. However, she blamed it on their runner picking up the raw appetizers and how busy they were. I was so angry and disgusted, I did not even touch my lunch after that. Well to finish the story, unbeknownst to me, she asked my friend to pay for half of what we ordered. Really!!!!! Anyhow after about a day, I had food poisoning! Two strikes from eating there; I definitely won't be back for the third tIme..... Horrible! First time, the food was soooo salty, tasted like everything is mixed with soy sauce and teriyaki sauce, then now this, raw pork dumplings! Awesome hole in the wall! In the corner of a mall lot that doesn't have a lot of traffic, so it's easy to pass by as a regular Chinese place. The restaurant is attached to an awesome little Asian market that we walked through after dinner. Very friendly and helpful staff seated us quickly. We had delicious crab rangoons to start, very fresh and flavorful. My wife had orange chicken and fried rice that smelled citrusy and was enough for two to share in itself! Was also great leftovers the next day. I had chicken lo mein, also very good and light, with a large serving as well. Mr Chen might have the best noodle bowl in town but in order to get a higher rating they have to be more complete. I have been here a lot over the past few months and the food has been 5star good and 2star bad. I would like to give them 3 and a half but I'm just not there yet. This is the worst bubble tea I have ever had in my life. It was like liquid diabetes. I could barely taste anything besides the sugar, and there was enough sugar for about a gallon of sweet tea. I could feel my pancreas cringing in horror and my kidneys crying out for water, my mouth turning itself inside out in the vain hope of escaping the overwhelming sweetness and keeping my teeth. I was surprised that they didn't have attitude when my crew and I walked in 30 mins prior to closing. The mini market attached to the restaurant has all the typical knick nacks, candy snacks! I think we had a leg up due to my father actually knowing what we were ordering. It all came with plenty of white rice to accompany the meal. Delicious, well-priced, and great service as always! Hubby and I have eaten it both as to-go and as dine-in. Never had a bad experience! Staff is always very friendly, prompt, and accommodating. We have been eating there almost since it opened. It's both close to us and has all the good we could ask for!
