    Spaghetti Style
    Jay S.

Visiting from California (having lived in SoCal where Korean hot dogs started toake their mark and now working in Berkeley across from a shop) I had to try these out, especially because they have a take on Korean Hot Dogs that I've never seen before! I got the Spaghetti style with just beef (because there was already parmesan sprinkled on top). Good enough to try, not something I'd do again. They had some other styles too, but I think I'll stick to the classics.

Damn. Best corn/hot dog I've ever had. Can't say much except I went the next day and ordered the same thing. Fantastic.

Really good. Something different from your normal corn dog. It's like eating a malasada and a hotdog with the sugar on top. Soo ono.

He was situated with a flag on the corner of Kapoho Rd (132) and Pohoiki Rd. Two hot dogs came out to $12.50. I got the Buffalo Cheesy Jalapeno Brat and the husband got the Reindeer Polish Dog. Both hot dogs were juicy and full of flavor. The hot dog man was playing cards with his buddies when we pulled up but promptly helped us and explained his menu to us to help us made a decision. He was super friendly and welcoming. He grilled the hot dogs and Hawaiian sweet buns on the grill and it was ready in about 5 minutes. He has the usual condiments like ketchup, mustard, BBQ sauce, relish and onion and two unique toppings( the jalapeno relish and spicy coconut jelly(?)). I LOVED the heat the jalapeno relish added to the hot dog but beware, it is quite spicy. The coconut jelly is sweet with a hint of spicy which was good as well. There's no chairs or table to sit at and eat but it's a quick, stand up meal.

Jesse imports all his elk, reindeer, and buffalo products straight from Alaska, where he used to live. I've tried them all and can't decide which is most delicious, so... have to try them all again. Warning: the elk "mini sliders" are huge... enough to share. The dogs are generously sized too. UPDATE: when I wrote the review the Hot Dog Guy was located in front of HPM hardware in Hilo, but now he is back in his regular spot at the intersection of Hwy 132 and Pohoiki Road near Pahoa. If you are driving from Pahoa towards Kapoho on a Monday-Friday between 9:30-3:30, you will see his truck on the right hand side of the road just past Lava Tree Park.

There were various options for everyone and easy ordering on the kiosk with pictures, which was super helpful. The dining area is spacious and breezy. I got a green river and portugese sausage loco moco, which are two of my favorite things! A lot of places don't have green river, so it was a pleasant surprise to find it being sold here. The Portuguese sausage was juicy and the gravy was the perfect consistency for the loco moco. I loved how many different meat options they had for their loco mocos. Definitely recommend coming here for a quick bite!

As a born-and-raised local, rice, gravy, and eggs will win me over every time, and I really wanted to love this place for the history alone. I'll be honest though -- the hype set the bar high, and I left a little let down. The regular loco moco was just okay. The hamburger patty tasted pre-made or frozen, though the gravy was solid (thank goodness). The beef stew also tasted pre-made and was lighter on the tomato flavor than I prefer. I ordered the steak as well (around $30), and it came out very well done. On the positive side, they offer a ton of plate lunch options, the space is extremely well kept for a local diner, and there's plenty of parking. It's covered outdoor seating only, but it's comfortable and clean. What surprised me most was the lack of visible history. I expected to see more storytelling about the loco moco origins -- photos, signage, staff sharing pride in it -- something that really leaned into that legacy. It felt a little missing. Still glad I tried it for the experience, but for me, it didn't quite live up to the legendary reputation.

The poi had a pleasant texture, though the haupia was too sweet for our taste. We upgraded from rice to fried rice, which was fine but unremarkable. Surprisingly, the pickled onions and chili water were the highlights, adding the most flavor to the meal. Service was efficient but felt rushed and impersonal. Our waitress checked in, but did so while walking away, making the interaction feel routine rather than attentive. Overall, the food was ok, but not memorable enough for us to return.

K's maintains that claim with flying colors. Awesome gravy, perfectly cooked easy over eggs, and decent hamburger patties make this a must for that similar loco moco craze that I experienced during this recent trip home to Hilo. I promise you, you can't go wrong here. Lots of parking, lots of covered seating, very friendly service, lots to choose from menu-wise, and bonus being attached to a liquor store (Kadota's). It's been years since I've been here, I'm so happy to see they're still around. Slightly disappointed i have to order mac salad separately, and a double loco is mot the standard large plate lunch size, rather a slight smaller. That's ok, honestly, I shouldn't be eating so much stuff that is the loco moco for one meal anyway, much less having one 3 days in a row. But, I'll be back when I'm back. Delicious.
