I went in here for one book. My son left with an armful of books. I love that he loves reading, so I am only complaining that I didn't find my book. What I did find was a well lit space with tons of gently used books. I really can't wait to go back, alone. I might even find a corner and start my book there. I have been to this store two times and both times come out with some great books in great condition. The staff here is super helpful and can even look up to see if they have a book on the shelf. Then, they are so kind to guide you to the section where you can find the book! The store is well organized, clean and very well maintained. Lovely used book store in Cary, NC. I didn't realize it was here until maybe the 10th time I drove through the plaza haha. As soon as I noticed it, of course I could not resist going inside. The shop is larger than I originally thought. It has good lighting and welcoming, helpful employees. The shelves are well stocked and neat. It is challenging to look for a particular author or title. It is best to peruse the shelves looking for an interesting next read rather than something specific. The books are organized by genre and typically books written by the same author are beside one another. I could have spent hours looking around. I easily found more than enough options I wanted to read. I decided on a few to purchase. They were all in good condition and cost about $4-5 each, reasonable to used books. Any books you no longer want, you can bring to the store and they may buy them back. There is no guarantee that they will buy back any books. If you're looking for cheap, good quality, older books this is the place to go! Most of the books were priced between $2-6 and seemed to be in pretty good condition. They have a small section at the front where you might find some newer releases, but aside from that you'll mostly find older books here. For months I have seen nothing but terrible business practices at this establishment. Mistreatment of their staff, owners often nowhere in sight to assist customers, total disregard for running a respectable business and making it an environment where customers will find it memorable and worthy of returning. It's frequently difficult to come into this store and get any sort of assistance with how understaffed the owners keep this place. The staff truly are doing wonders with keeping the shop on its legs because it's evident to me that the owners do not. Not to mention the outdated website that is completely inaccessible to navigate. For this place to have such a limited and outdated (not to mention extremely disorganized) selection of books, I was shocked when I and several other people around the same time brought in more recently published and good to like new condition in romance, thriller, and fantasy genres and they were offering less than 1.00 per book if they would take them at all. Many of the books on their shelves are in poor condition and they're still charging 5-7 dollars each and then blatantly trying to take advantage of people bringing in fresh inventory that would most likely be stocked right at the front two bookcases (where they clearly try and highlight their 'best' inventory) being sold for 8-10+ dollars each. I understand they're a business and have to make a profit, but to offer 8 dollars for 12 newer books (two were even like new hardbacks that are still popular fantasy novels by Lauren Roberts and Jennifer Armentrout) was laughable. I just packed up and left - I would honestly rather donate to a free library than support a small business being greedy and underhanded. The store is overall very disorganized and not well maintained. Very few of the shelves are labeled or organized. Sections are unclear. Their stock is very outdated, mostly seems to be poorly kept books that are at least over a decade old. I would say more than 50% of the books have spines bent and faded so badly you can barely recognize the titles. Even the books right at the front that they display as new arrivals/best inventory are haphazardly shoved on shelves with no thought of protecting book integrity/dust jackets/etc. Just to sanity check myself, I went to 2 other used bookstores within an hour of this one with the exact same books to get a quote - both offered triple what Mr. Mike's did. One of them even asked if I was sure that I hadn't misunderstood and they were offering 8 dollars for ONE book, not all twelve I brought in. Maybe I misunderstood and this bookstore is only for much older inventory than what I was offering? But if that were the case you'd like to think one of the employees working would have mentioned that. I hope for this business's sake this was just a bad, one off experience but I was in the store and heard and saw what other people brought in and were being offered and it was very similar to me. Won't be returning here. The quality of their inventory is the same as books you'd buy for a quarter at a yard sale and no better maintained, and I'm not interested in supporting a greedy small business who don't even have enough integrity to take care of the merchandise they sell. read more

I love this bookstore! They have a great selection of everything and well priced. I found some out of print books there, as well as newer editions. The store is very clean and well lit. The staff is friendly and eager to help you. The bookcases are marked as to content and alphabetically arranged so you aren't sifting through tons of books and wasting time (that you could be reading). They have a great amount of paranormal mixed in with their science fiction and that sci fi section is not tiny. This is my new go to for books. read more

Great used book store in Cary! I was really impressed by both the selection and quality of the books. I found several nice copies of newer, popular titles to take home. They have a shelf of new hauls right when you walk in which definitely caught my eye, but if you peruse the aisles you will find hidden gems. Fairly priced books ($1-$5), however their selection is quite limited. They don't stock very many well-known books & most of their books are somewhat dated (pre-2000). The atmosphere was somewhat stale as well, if you're someone that enjoys a book store for its ambience- this one was definitely lacking in that department (no music, overwhelming smell of mold & body odor, overall dirty feeling in the store). The staff was friendly but quite unhelpful, they don't keep inventory so there's no point in asking/calling in to see if they have a certain book in stock. Additionally, with no music or anything playing in the store, all we could hear was an obnoxious employee going into unnecessary detail about his "crusty & scabby tattoo", which there was no escaping because he could unfortunately be heard even in the furthest corner of the store... Overall, this store's best quality is the pricing on their books, but good luck finding what you're looking for-- & don't bother asking the staff for help. read more

This was a hard review for me, I really liked the small intimate feel of the shop however and I'm trying not to let the shopping experience I came into affect that. When I came in the woman behind the counter was being very rude to a customer (mind you I missed the beginning of the conversation) when the customer was storming she was mumbling "never - again loudly." What upset me though was that the cashier then proceeded to comment on the customer who had just left to the other customers in the shop. That is the ultimate in unprofessionalism and it really put a negative spin on my experience here. Later on I watched her with other customers and while direct she was helpful but I still have a very sour taste in my mouth just from that one interaction. I will give it a 4 Star did the shop itself and the fact I found 5 books I wanted. read more

I called in because I didn't want to drive 30 minutes without having a sense of whether or not they would take my books... The woman made a weird comment about it as if wanting to have information before making an hour roundtrip was crazy. In addition, her reason for not wanting books by a New York Times best selling author was because they didn't already have any books by her... Personally, I really enjoyed her books and writing style & found her work through online reading communities. Google is free.. so is Good Reads. Their loss I guess. The book they did want from me was absolute garbage and only wanted it because of the author. An author's name isn't everything. Very strange vibe I got from them. I've been shopping at Mr. Mike's since they were off of Harrison Avenue, over ten years ago. The store is always neat, clean, and very well organized. Although the shop is small, they have a huge selection of young adult novels, mysteries, romances, children's books and contemporary fiction. The service is always friendly and efficient, the books look new or almost new, and the prices are reasonable. Although I've never brought in books for trade or credit, a lot of people do that, too. I've been to this store twice now. The first was to browse for books, the second time was to sell my used books. I would say this is a decent little used book shop. It's no where near as big as the old Edward McKay's, but it still holds a decent amount of books in an area that doesn't have many used book stores. It's a good place to sell your old books if you're just trying to get rid of them. If you're selling your books for the money, I would try selling them online. They pay 20% of the price they will SELL the books at. They offered $2.40 cash for my three text books, but they offered $6 store credit as an alternative, so I took that. read more

Absolute worst book store in the triangle! Go to Readers Corner or Nice Price first. They throw away trash bags full of good books yet get mad if you want to actually read them. If they put a $1 bin out even with the books they send to a landfill instead or at least donating might help, but no. On top of it all the books they send to the dumpster are literally way more interesting than the ones they stock on their shelves. I'm about to start a book tomorrow they threw away I saved from the landfill I would have definitely paid to own. read more

Parking was easy, books were organized in each section alphabetically, and customer service was friendly but not overbearing. There are quite a few books to pick from, and they are all in great condition. Fiction paperbacks are $3, and most hard covers are $4. The girl who has been working the register the few times I've been in has always been ok towards me, but I've heard her be extremely rude and bossy towards customers who are either trying to sell books ("Put that box on the floor. Get it off the counter."/"We stopped taking used books to Goodwill 4 years ago. Take them yourself" etc), or just have questions while trying to use their store credit towards purchases. It's very uncomfortable to shop while you're listening to customers be treated so disrespectfully and wonder if you're going to receive that type of treatment when you check out. I go back because of the prices and book quality, but it's sad that I have to stay quiet and not ask questions for fear of setting off the beast of an employee. read more

First time visiting this little "hole in the wall" place and was NOT disappointed. Staff was very friendly and helpful. A good amount of foot traffic considering the location. The book prices and quality cannot be beat! If you are in search of kids books, general fiction, crime, etc then this is the place for you. We got a pile of books for cheap! Used bookstores, in my experience, are either clean & organized but with higher prices OR a giant dusty mess with fantastic prices. Mr. Mike's is a unicorn because super affordable books are organized beautifully in a clean store. Walking in, the small space and the fact that there aren't piles of books everywhere makes a casual shopper perhaps skeptical that the selection isn't as large as it could be. But I am surprised EVERY TIME by how many fantastic finds are tucked in the shelves. The people who select the inventory have amazing taste and really make their shelf space count. The hardest thing to find is an organized book store that has most novel series and with a quiet environment but I found one, and even better, the prices are super cheap since M. Mike's sells used books. I was impressed by the organized shelves by genre (fiction, science fiction, biographies, mystery, romance, finance, etc). It has everything from a casual read to business and budget planning books. There is available seating if you wanted to just sit down and read- there's also a children's book section so it's a good alternative to going to quiet libraries where no talking is expected. read more
