Without looking it up (he stayed on his phone throughout this) he just smiled like it was really funny to smugly say "we usually have it but we just ran out." And that was that. He didn't offer a solution just smiled and soaked in the self-pleasure of his snide answer. There was a painful pause as he waited for my reaction, wanting to relish in it, presumably, but I just said "ok then..?" And shrugged. And clearly disappointed I didn't leave right there he sighed and said "we could order one. Want to do that?" But he didn't offer any info about how much it would be, when it would be in, nothing. I had to pry that info from him. So forget it.

Hooray for independent booksellers. So & So is a small bookstore. It's not a used bookstore and…read moretheir titles are selective and probably not those you'll find (at least easily) at a mainstream shop. I like that. Sharing a space with an architectural firm, what you see when you first walk in, is what you get. There's not aisles and aisles of books, but that's what makes it easy to spend some time looking. The children and young adult section is a decent size, surprisingly, so it will give the kids something to do while you spend time looking. Mostly current authors, and a fair mix of biographical, non-fiction and informational, So & So does its job -- offering something different when time and boredom with the common stuff can make book shopping a chore. None of that is an issue here.

When you arrive parking is tough in this area as it is near Moore square. I'd recommend parking a couple blocks away and walking or parking in a nearby garage. Walking in the book/coffee shop feels inclusive, cozy, and vibrant/community focused. There's also a section of banned books which is great to see and really highlights the progressive bookshelves. For coffee I ordered the Banana Pudding Latte which has banana puree and nilla wafers. It was so refreshing to order this iced on a hot day and the banana flavor wasn't overpowering. Definitely check out the Blackbird book/coffee shop if you are in the local Raleigh area.

This shop is nestled into the small streets of DT Raleigh in a charming way, like a corner in Diagon alley. It's walking distance from a park and many eateries. We all ordered pastries and lattes, then shopped for stickers and books. There's a table near the front and some more in the back by the cafe. Fun, curated collections of books and zines that we really appreciated. My hot oat matcha latte was delicious and so was my amazing cheddar scone. The baristas and owner were incredibly nice and friendly. It set the tone for a great day in DT Raleigh.

They have a good selection of those hard to find collectors books also. Tom was really nice when a fellow collector passed he would buy most of their collection, if not all, he didn't just cherry pick the high value collector's books. So Broadfoot has a huge collection of great books under $50, and many under $20. I struggled to post this as it is kind of a secret diamond unknown to individual civil war collectors. I say that because when I go there I regularly bump into bookstore owners buying at the same price! But, hey I turn 70 this year LOL. The new owner us a real nice guy also. Happy book hunting at great prices

Broadfood has been selling Civil War books for longer than many folks reading this review have been alive (including me and I'm in my late 30s)! Broadfoot is a major publisher of Civil War titles and they also sell used Civil War books. This location is their storefront. And oh what a store it is! If you are a military history buff or student of the Civil War this is very literally heaven on earth. The store isn't fancy but it's stocked with thousands of new and used books on the Civil War. The folks running the shop are friendly, welcoming, and exceedingly helpful. I spent 4 hours browsing and still didn't see everything. Prices are so reasonable to almost be absurd. They have books that sell for hundreds of dollars for $5, $10, $20, or $30 each. They also stock many rare highly collectible antiquarian books as well. Though they have a huge selection of used Civil War titles, as a publisher Broadfoot also specializes in publishing large and often rare but critical primary source reference sets like the Official Records of the Rebellion. In their store many of these sets are heavily discounted from what they cost when ordering online or from other bookstores. Even better they have a scratch and dent section too. You can pick up sets most people would only ever see in a major University library for fractions of their street price. If you are a book person and interested in the Civil War this place is a MUST SEE. Just be aware they have very limited hours on Wed and Fri only. In this day of publishers and shops dying left and right and folks moving to eBooks places like Broadfoot are to be celebrated! I can't wait to visit again soon.

Enter COVID-19 and I saw on Instagram that their sales were down 75% due to the pandemic. I figured now was the perfect time to finally support this local bookstore. You can place your order online and they offer free proch drop off within a certain radius. I emailed in to the owner, Christine, asking for recommendations for my son who is obsessed with trucks and animals. She came back with a wonderful personalized list of books for him-- many of them I hadn't heard of before! She takes the time to make sure the list fits your child's interests and age. I will say that I added all of the books to my Amazon cart to see what the price difference would be. I purchased four books and the total was only $5 cheaper on Amazon. For only $5 more I was able to support a small biz in my community, receive a personalized recommendation list for my son, and get it dropped off right at my door.
