Such a cool hidden spot! Very nice place to find new or used books, all sorts of genres and types! We had such a blast looking st all the extra hodden decorations and fun sayings throughout. The staff did seem to keep to themselves, if you are looking for a spot you will not be bothered and left to roam on your own this is the spot . There are some older books for great value however new books are same price as elsewhere but great way to support your local business. read more

Pauper's is an amazing local, independent bookstore that sells used and new books. They have their deeply discounted books outside, but if you come on inside you'll see a cozy space with an insane variety of books! You can easily get lost in there browsing everything. They also have comic books, records, and DVDs. The books are generally priced from $1 - $20, with used books averaging $2.99 and new books averaging $15. We have had some great finds at Pauper's and always look forward to taking a trip there! read more

My absolute favorite local bookstore! The staff is always so warm and welcoming. They've got an amazing mix of used and new books, from Louis L'Amour and Tolkien to Sarah J. Maas and Holly Black. This was my first time visiting this bookstore located in the Lowes Foods strip mall. They sell mostly used and some new books. I liked that they enforce mask wearing so I felt safe shopping here. The employees seemed friendly and I liked the quirkiness of the store. There are carts of books outside the store that are only a $1.00/each. The prices inside seemed reasonable and I bought four books. They have a rewards card program that I signed up for. 5.0/5.0 yes! I will definitely be back. Great used book store. Great selection of mystery, horror, sci-fi/fantasy, comics, graphic novels, classics, contemporary fiction, children's books, and non fiction. The front of the store is dedicated to niche-market buyers/collectors, so if you're looking for a hard-to-find copy of a book, or something special, check it out. Knowledgeable staff--you just have to ask if you're looking for something. Regarding trade-in's for cash or credit: used book stores can't accept everything that is offered to them. They have limited inventory space, and they can't accept every book offered to them at any given time. For instance, James Patterson sells A LOT of books. A used book store can't buy 30 copies of a James Patterson book--but they can keep a couple in stock and restock as they sell. So, if they can't accept your book for cash/credit, just understand that is the reality of market economics. read more

I come here frequently and every time that I do, I always find something that I want to read. They have some great unique finds (such as first editions and signed copies). Anytime that I have needed help finding something, they seem to know exactly where the book is within seconds! It is very well organized for the amount of items that they have in the store. I have also never had an issues with them buying books. I also haven't expected EVERYTHING to be taken. An example would be, yeah they were probably buying 'Gone Girl' in 2012, and although it was popular almost 10 years ago, they probably don't need as many copies now. I think that the bookstore is going to know more about what is going to sell rather than the person trying to sell them. They have super friendly staff that make you feel welcome. If you love books and love finding a deal, I HIGHLY recommend this place!! read more

My 9 year old son and I explored this shop for the first time today. We both found things that interest us and left with 2 bags full of books for less than $30. The children's section was great and had a wide selection at very reasonable prices. The entire store was organized and clean and the gentleman at checkout was friendly and interacted with my son which I thought was cool. My son has ADHD and was fidgeting which usually annoys people but he was welcomed and encouraged to look though the comics and was made to feel at home. We could have spent all day in here ...... I loved coming to find him and seeing him sitting on the floor reading a book. read more

I am so thankful that bookstores like this still exist. I don't live in Clayton, but my family does and I make it a habit to stop in this store EVERY TIME I'm in town. They have an incredible book selection. I'm always bound to find something I'm not even looking for. It's always quiet and they have the cutest antique chairs in every corner to sit and skim through books. I believe they also have a DVD collection as well. To top it all off their prices are UNBEATABLE! I'm talking, better than Amazon (like, is that even possible?!) Which is what keeps me coming back. It's great to finally have a bookstore in Johnston County. Paupers is located in a strip mall but have turned it into an inviting, fairly well organized space. They have a pretty good selection of used books at good prices. I have to say that I have found their trade in policy extremely frustrating. On several occasions I have purchased books from them, read them and tried to trade them in several weeks later only to be told, sorry, we won't take that book. What the heck, I just bought it from you and now it's not good enough for your store? There doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to their policy and it certainly isn't clearly advertised. The thing that no one ever underatands about places that do trade ins is that they cannot give you anything close to what its actually worth. They have to resell at at a profit even after business expenses associated with it. The selection here is terrific and the prices are reasonable. This place is great. It may not be Powell's or the Strand, but for a strip mall in Clayton, this is pure gold. I found their sci-fi selection to be much more interesting than McKay's. Maybe not as many books (maybe! Pauper's has a lot!), but a much deeper selection. The books were better-organized as well. It looks like they have a lot of "academic" sections as well as romance novels, Christian novels, a large horror selection, etc. They also sell used CDs, comic book back issues and a wide selection of new graphic novels (DC, Marvel, Vertigo and indies). Definitely worth stopping in if you're in the neighborhood. read more

I always come here first for all my new books! I love their classics the most and also their music section! They have cds, records, books on: art, tourism, foreign languages, comics, anime, manga, and anything else you might be thinking of this very second! Went to paupers with my mother for the first time. They had an amazing copy of the Dev8ne Comedy, and the 1600's play "Dr. Faustus" the owner knows everything about every book ever. I had a book I tried to sell and had no idea of its worth. Het took me aside and said "your book is worth $400 because there was only 24 made and 18 came to the united states. Put it on Amazon for $350 and you should have no trouble selling it." He could have easily offered me a $20 bill and would have never been the wiser. Thanks paupers for having the only place in Johnston county to cary Manga books and your honesty to your customers! read more

This book store is awesome. They seemed to have a bit of everything there. I loved their childrens section which seemed to have lots of new and vintage books. Their prices are awesome too. Typically I'm an amazon shopper but before I buy now I go an see what they have first. read more

I love this store. They have a huge selection of comic books. The only reason I gave this place four stars is because they put stickers on the first page of every comic book in their dollar bins making them virtually worthless. I understand that they do this so they do not get ripped off by people trying to get high end comics for a dollar but they need to find a better way to do so. read more

Should be renamed "Pompous Books and More." Clearly, the guy's friends are either hardback or paperback. If you have a book on customer service, please try and sell it to them. Although they do seem to have a great selection of new and old books; their trade in policy is quite aggravating...to say the least. When I questioned this, the attitude and runaround I received was astounding. While I do love to support local businesses, especially a " mom and pop" bookstore, which is extremely rare nowadays...I will NOT return. I would rather donate my used books to the local library or donation center where they actually appreciate my "business." read more

We love book stores and this bookstore has a wonderful selection as well as great prices. We could easily have spent hours there. We left with 10 books and are now part of their frequent shopper program. I like being able to purchase hard cover books for under $5! This is definitely a store we will frequent often. read more

Great bookstore for our town. I have been able to trade in old books for credit, not all of them, but the owners have to be selective, for as big as the store is, it's full. Selection is much more than the genre fiction most people prefer. I like literary fiction and there's a lot of that, and non-fiction too. Also movies and music. Prices are really fair. read more

I have frequented the store many times. I have bought and sold books and videos. The past two times i have been in i have had list of books or videos required for my high schoolers AP courses. I have asked for help on both trips and was told " if you didnt find it by the videos then we don't have it" Never offered to help me look just got a blank stare and that reply. If i didnt wan't some help i would not have asked. I think i will just stick to amazon or ebay. read more

Frustrated by the trade-in policy. Store may look open open but check the hours carefully for the actual hours they will accept books. I was told their policy is clearly stated on their website. Unfortunately, I actually was in the store and not on the website and had hauled in a bagful of books and wasn't aware of this "policy." Don't bother with them. The manager isn't even slightly helpful and their used book prices aren't that great. Too bad for them, I won't be back! read more

This is a great place to go in and buy new ongoing comic series. It is the best place to buy that i have cound in the area in that it is a comic book store run by people who actually read comic books and as an added bonus its not scary like other places i treid before this one. Their buy back prices are a sometimes wonky as their seems to be no set boundry but its understandable as they need to make money off it too. Otherwise a great bookstore in the area. read more
