This was not your typical Chinese restaurant. Mr Wong is located in a dark alley behind a busy road around Circular Quay in Sydney, Australia. The location was so off the typical path that if I didn't know about this restaurant, I would never have walked by and decided to stop by. The decor was classically Chinese and modern at the same time. On the traditional side, they had roasted ducks hanging off a rack, yet the interior was so beautifully and tastefully decorated that it didn't feel tacky or old-fashioned in an offensive way. The food was spot on. We ordered the following: 1. Kang-pao chicken 2. Bamboo, woodear and celery stir fry - this dish was punched with flavor, had great umami, my only complaint was that the bamboo shoots were a bit tough 3. Hot pot stuffed tofu with pork and shrimp in abalone sauce - this was a WINNER! This dish felt like home. It was so comforting and the flavors and textures were in perfect harmony. This dish was served hot which I loved since Sydney is still in winter. It was a perfect dish and the concept worked well. Sometimes a restaurant nails every aspect. Mr Wong did it during my visit there and based on the foot traffic and wonderful reviews, it delivers every time. The restaurant is tucked away on a sort of back street. Kinda reminded me of the cool restaurants and speakeasies hidden in NYC's Chinatown. There are at least two floors from what I can see and the vibe is immaculate. Great date or group spot. My group had a reservation but we did have to wait a few minutes to be seated. Once we were, our server was awesome (I wish I remembered her name). But let's talk food. The oysters and Ora King Salmon were fantastic. We also ordered prawns, a certain beef order (I forget the exact names) as well as the special fried rice. Everything hit -- including the drinks. When we picked Chinese for dinner tonight, we weren't expecting it to have such a western ambiance to it. When we walked in Bridge Lane, I didn't think this restaurant would have a line outside. To be honest, I was expecting a hole in a wall, casual vibe. It turned out to be a huge place with a bar, an open kitchen, and plenty of space where ducks hang dry ready for Peking Duck. Mr Wong is a popular Cantonese style cuisine restaurant located in Sydney CBD. It is hidden in a back alley. I recommend making a reservation as the place is often packed. The restaurant itself is large and occupies two floors, is nicely decorated, and has high energy vibe. We ordered the Peking Duck Pancakes, King Crab Fried Rice, and King Prawns, Scallops, and Calamari wok fried with XO sauce and glass noodles. The Peking Duck Pancakes comes with 8 pancakes and some scallions and hoisin sauce to be wrapped. I would say this is a 3 out of 5. The duck is more a traditional roast duck than a Peking duck. In a traditional Peking duck, the crispy duck skin is served separate from the duck meat. In this case, they just cut up pieces of roast duck to you to be wrapped. The duck skin wasn't particularly crispy. The King crab fried rice is served typhoon style which includes a healthy topping of crispy garlic and chili. It is only mildly spicy and the crispy garlic offers a unique texture to the crab fried rice. Decent portion of the crab in the fried rice. I would rate this a 4 out of 5. The King prawns, scallops, and calamari wok fried with XO sauce is our favorite. I would score if a 5 out of 5. The dish is served in a clay pot so it is piping out. Perfect ambiance like a movie. What a hidden gem. Found it as we looked for another establishment and noted the big lines. So we figured food is probably worth it it. And much to our surprise everything we ordered was amazing. Including the green beans. This cannot be replicated @ home. This restaurant was mentioned several times in conversations about where to eat in Sydney so we had to try it. You must make a reservation. You will not get a table without one. Our reservation was at 5:30pm which is when it opened. There was a mob of people outside waiting for it to open. It was well managed when the crowd started filing in. Our waiter (Ben) was great. He walked us through the menu and size of options to help us create a perfect meal. We started with dim sum. We got the steamed option and customized it to be 6 pieces instead of 8. Lots of seafood. It was so good. While the duck pancakes were a signature item, we skipped them so we could try some other options. The pancakes are really more like make your own spring rolls or like an Asian soft shell taco. Looked fun but ok that we skipped. Next was steamed prawns. This was a fav choice. The prawns were cooked perfectly and the ginger and cilantro worked well with the taste and texture of the prawns. Finally, we had pork and shrimp fried rice. Again, very good. The restaurant is in a building that looks like a refurbished warehouse. The exposed brick and unfinished ceiling give it a cozy, authentic vibe. It's super busy and, therefore, quite loud. The food was some of the best I've had. The Peking duck was INCREDIBLE and the kung pow chicken was so delicious! The dumplings were okay but not my favorite. My review should be closer to 3 stars due to our service, but the food was so good that I brought it up. Our server was incredibly rude and walked away in the middle of me asking a simple question about the available dumplings for dinner. She asked if we had questions but walked away and didn't come back for a good 15 mins to take out order. It truly left a sour taste in our mouths right from the start. This is one of the most iconic restaurants in Sydney. Based on my research online and when asking a couple friends, everyone was raving about Mr. Wong, so we made reservations about 1.5 months in advance to secure a spot! Each reservation guarantees two hours and we made ours for 2:00P. Their lunch hour ends at 3:00P and the restaurant closes for a couple hours before dinner. When we arrived, it was completely packed, but started clearing out after 40 minutes, so for the second half of the reservation, we didn't have any other customers around us and could enjoy our meal in a quieter environment. The prices here are on the steeper end for Chinese and dim sum dishes, but the options are very diverse and unique. I'd consider their dim sum items elevated and with many that I've never seen anywhere else. + JADE DUMPLING, PRAWN & CHIVES w/ KING CRAB (A$24): The large snappy prawn in each dumpling was the focus, especially being encased within an ultra-thin wrapper. I didn't notice more than just a pinch of crab, so that was a little disappointing. If not for the menu, I probably wouldn't have even known there was crab in there. + PAN FRIED SICHUAN STYLE LAMB DUMPLING (A$24): Exactly how it sounds, the filling of this crispy fried dumpling consisted of shredded lamb with some spice. It was pretty gamey, but also bold, and any fans of lamb will enjoy it. + CRISPY BEAN CURD ROLL w/ WILD MUSHROOMS (A$21): These were so good, we ordered a second plate! Similar to an egg roll, crispy bean curd sheets were filled with a mix of wild mushrooms and shredded carrots. The rolls were served on top of a hoisin-like sauce that was both savory and sweet. This is a must! + ROAST DUCK & CHIVE DUMPLING (A$22): The chives were pretty potent but I could still taste the five spice of the tender duck. The meat was lean and surprisingly didn't contain any fat or gristle. I enjoyed how unique these were and could have eaten another order of them. + BBQ PORK RICE ROLL (A$24): The rice roll was silky and had a good portion of chopped BBQ pork. We also ordered two items from the regular menu. + TWICE COOKED GREEN BEANS (A$34): A solid vegetable dish! The beans were cooked nicely and still had a crunch. There was a generous amount of minced pork and the XO sauce had a mild enticing spice. + HONG KONG STYLE RICE NOODLES (A$42): This is their version of a beef chow fun. The noodles had a delicious char flavor and based on how tender the beef was, I could tell it was great quality. Bean sprouts and chives added some crunch and the dish had just the right amount of soy sauce. Service way surpassed our expectations. Our waiter was so friendly, had a great sense of humor and went above and beyond by changing out our plates three times during the meal. From the moment you walk up to this place, it looks like a dimly lit abandoned bodega and located in an inconspicuous alley that similarly feels out of place. The only that gives away that there's a business there is the long line that forms 15 to 20 mins before they open. But it's exactly what adds to the curiosity and ambiance of the place. It has 2 levels for dining and a bar on the bottom floor. Once you enter. The waiters are lined up behind the hostess ready to welcome and wait on the customers. We ordered one of the banquet menus in order to get to taste a little bit of everything on the menu. There were so many highlights of the evening--from the chef selected dim sum to the prawn toast to the deep fried ice cream, but I will limit myself to talking in depth about two food items. The calamari was fresh and light and was likely the best calamari me and my husband have ever had. The sweet and sour pork was spectacular. It came in the form of a cube that appeared crisp on the outside but almost melted in your mouth the moment you bit into it because it was so tender. We came here as a walk in on a weekday night, and they were thankfully able to seat us. It seems that this place is always busy when we pass by, filled with people dressed to the nines for a night out or in casual garb looking for a good, hearty meal. Mr Wongs is best when shared, as most of the dishes are quite large and you can hardly stick to just one. We got the Peking duck, king crab fried rice, wonton soup, king Pao chicken, XLB, cod, and braised pork belly. It was definitely too much food for two people, but I can't think of a single dish that I would have forgone. My advice is to go with a big group so you can try everything. I've eaten a fair amount of Cantonese food in my life (both upscale and not) and this place definitely hits the mark! The flavors are clearly there and the food was all so delicious! Got lucky to walk in at 7pm on a Sunday and get waitlisted for only 15 minutes! I was worried it would be too full! We had the Peking duck, Mr Wong Singapore noodles, and morning glory. All of them were fantastic! The Peking duck had a really thin layer of crispy skin though so I would recommend eating it separately because it gets lost in the whole breading when you put it together on the pancake. I also thought the pancake was a bit large for what you end up creating, thus giving the whole bite too much "bread", but it was still delicious and something I'd order again. From the hostess, waiter, etc. They continued filling my water at appropriate times, and had small conversations (which still allowed me to enjoy my meal) I didn't know what I wanted to eat. So the waiter was able to put together a sampler "fried" plate for me allowing me to try different fried dim sum (which wasn't on the menu). The steam and fried dim sum was the best I ever had coming from someone who eats dim sum religiously. You can tell each one was unique with its taste, texture, and a combination of different substance. The fried rice was ok, but if you had the fried eggplant (omg) that was so good and the sauce elevated the rice. The ambience was a bit loud and dark if you don't like those kind of environments. They charged $5.5 per seat. 10%tax . It was Sunday so there was 10% surcharge of total bill. Don't let the "Two Hats" status glossy Merivale branding, or endless hype fool you--this place is one of the most absurdly overpriced dining traps in Sydney CBD. Considering Sydney's average full-time salary sits around $85k-$100k AUD, this level of pricing is totally disconnected from reality. Paying on overpriced dishes won't buy you a decent luxuries. You pay 3-4x more in expenses but below average service and meal. Very disappointing. No recommendations at all. read more

(Last visited May 8, 2023.) As a newlywed (4/27/23) my wife and I chose to honeymoon in Australia, first going to Hayman Island for a week then exploring Sydney for another week! Well, fresh off of the plane from the northeast of the down under we chose Mr. Wong because we heard some AMAZING things from the locals who were vacationing at the same resort we were! Here's how it went... Atmosphere/Appearance: This place was actually a little difficult to find given it's tucked away location downtown, but eventually we found the gorgeous brick archway which leads you into the first floor of the gigantic restaurant. This place felt so spacious and open. It was super busy, yet it still felt incredibly intimate. I loved the dimly lit lights and low-playing music. We sat on the first floor off to the right near the kitchen. The manager at the time let us walk around and check out the aging Peking duck and the basement downstairs where SO MUCH wine is kept. Service: I can't remember our server's name or even the manager's and I feel awful about it because they were so awesome! Regardless we wanted for nothing and felt well taken care of. Food: This restaurant offers over 80 dishes so it could be very difficult to choose what to eat! We tried a variety of dim sum ranging from their Lobster & Scallop, to Duck & Chives, Pork & Bamboo Shoots and numerous others. The quality of everything was off of chain and it was hard to put in words. It's a shame that Chinese food in America gets such a bad rep for being cheap, greasy and fast because when you have Chinese food that is cooked with love, passion, skill and vigor it's SO MUCH BETTER. Like, really off the charts! Next up we had the King Crab Fried Rice which was delicious, but in my opinion, could've used more crab. The rice was soft, tender, flavorful and bold. I just wanted more crab. Lol. Who wouldn't? Last, but not least... we HAD to have the Peking Duck Pancakes. These sound strange, but they're not like what you're thinking. They're just like... crepes that you built yourself with the most delicious, succulent, perfectly cooked duck, crispy, fresh sprouts and hoisin sauce. These were AMAZING because they were so simple. You don't need 25 ingredients to make something fantastic. This is what the place is known for right here. Value: So remember all of that dim sum we had? You can order 8 assorted steamed or fried pieces for $54.00 AUD ($32.50 USD) and that was totally worth it. The King Crab Fried Rice was $53.00 AUD ($32.00) for the large portion and $44.00 AUD ($26.50 USD) for the small. Lastly, the Peking Duck Pancakes were $64.00 AUD ($38.50 USD) and 8 pancakes and $120.00 AUD ($72.00) for 16. We only needed the smaller portion since we had so much other food. Lol. Make your booking as soon as you can. We tried and tried knowing that we were only in Sydney for a total of seven nights over a thirty day period. We wanted to dine with Mr. Wong in the early evening (6:30/7:00 timeframe) and had to take what we could. About six weeks in advance of our arrival we started looking. There was only one available at 6:00PM and we grabbed it and it was on our next to last night in Australia. We arrived and got one of the best seats in this huge restaurant upstairs right next to the kitchen so we could watch some of the food being prepared. This was our fifth visit to Mr. Wong's over the past years so we knew we wanted the Peking Duck with Pancakes so then had to decide what to add. We both wanted everything but it came down to the Queensland King Prawns. The Peking Duck with Pancakes arrived and it was pure beauty. The duck skin was perfectly roasted with that crisp feel. And the duck meat was tender and succulent. The pancakes are always some of the best we ever have where ever we travel. The homemade hoisin sauce, along with the slices of cucumber and scallions were perfect making the little Peking Duck bundles of greatness. The Prawns arrived in their dish of beauty. They were huge, I would guess they were U-8/10 size. They were deep fried with spicy salt and 3 types of peppercorns. Haven't figured out what "spicy salt" is but the peppercorns could have made the salt spicy!!! The peppercorns made the dish. The prawns were peaking out of this massive bowl of them. I don't know the exact mixture of the three types but do know they had our favorite...the szechuan/sichuan reddish peppercorns...we search for them. You either love them or hate them. The Prawns were extremely fresh no shrimpy taste. Not too much batter, just enough. Can't wait to try this dish again. I might add that this Fried Prawn with Spicy Salt and Peppercorns it now at the top of our list of all-time favorite dishes. Service was great. Dishes were explained in detail. The food was amazing, and the customer service was just as outstanding. Our tea and wine were accidentally forgotten, but the store manager personally came over to apologize, gave us the tea for free, and insisted on treating us to complimentary deep-fried ice cream to make up for the inconvenience. Since we're American, she even wrote "Welcome to Australia" in chocolate on the plate, which was such a thoughtful and memorable touch. The ambiance is incredible. The restaurant is tucked into a unique space beneath a large building, accessed through an alley, but the lighting and atmosphere are beautifully done and really set the mood. Very good food I recommend getting the fried ice cream desert and get the fried rice it's nearly beter than my dads.

On 15 December 2025, we went to Mr Wong in Sydney based on several recommendations. We made reservations from the Four Seasons Hotel. Upon arrival, we were seated downstairs at the bar. The restaurant was very crowded. The service initially was fine, although we had four different wait staff. We ordered the Mud Crab, Wok fried in garlic butter sauce. The dish was served for two of us to share with one set of silverware. We began trying to crack the crab shell but repeatedly there was minimal crab meat. The minimal meat was stringy and would not come off the shell. After 15 minutes of trying, we gave up. One of the waiters asked if we were done and I politely described our difficulties and dissatisfaction. She merely commented that it was a difficult dish to eat. None of the four wait staff offered any questions or apologies. We were given the bill to pay which we did. The dish was approximately 200 AUD. Based on this experience, we would not recommend Mr Wong. There are countless better restaurants in Sydney. Please do not fall for the hype of Mr Wong. read more

Took my brother out to Monsieur Wong, a dinner for two, celebrating his visit to Sydney from Luxembourg. The environment is on the louder side and crowded--seating is touch-elbows close with other patrons. The food was nice and edible, but not memorable--except for Lobster ordered for us both by my brother, most of which I ended up taking home--the amount was way too excessive for just two people, though no guidance was provided by our 'waiter'. From memory, the meal for two cost me $870. read more
