When we picked Chinese for dinner tonight, we weren't expecting it to have such a western ambiance to it. When we walked in Bridge Lane, I didn't think this restaurant would have a line outside. To be honest, I was expecting a hole in a wall, casual vibe. It turned out to be a huge place with a bar, an open kitchen, and plenty of space where ducks hang dry ready for Peking Duck. We sat by the bar as we didn't have a reservation. The menu items were not extraordinary, I mean, items were common like Kung Pao Chicken, dimsum items but they were cooked well and presented very well. Quite impressive. We ordered 3 items between two of us and we were so full.
Lunar New Year means Chinese food at a restaurant recommended by so many friends - Mr Wong. Arrived at 12 for lunch and was able to walk in with no reservation. This restaurant was very large -2 floors - we were seated in the basement which was a very cool ambiance- loved the decor. Ordered hot and sour soup, roasted duck pancakes, fried salt and pepper tofu, egg noodles with mushrooms and scallions. All delicious and very tasty. Service - prompt. I highly recommend.
We came before dinner opening to line up for a chance to try this place. It was walking distance from our hotel so we wanted to check it out. The place is pretty dark but the Chinese food was good. The peking duck was great and tasty. The fried rice was a bit salty for me and the wonton soup was okay. I would recommend to try if you're in Sydney!
Mr Wong is a popular Cantonese style cuisine restaurant located in Sydney CBD. It is hidden in a back alley. I recommend making a reservation as the place is often packed. The restaurant itself is large and occupies two floors, is nicely decorated, and has high energy vibe. We ordered the Peking Duck Pancakes, King Crab Fried Rice, and King Prawns, Scallops, and Calamari wok fried with XO sauce and glass noodles. The Peking Duck Pancakes comes with 8 pancakes and some scallions and hoisin sauce to be wrapped. I would say this is a 3 out of 5. The duck is more a traditional roast duck than a Peking duck. In a traditional Peking duck, the crispy duck skin is served separate from the duck meat. In this case, they just cut up pieces of roast duck to you to be wrapped. The duck skin wasn't particularly crispy. The King crab fried rice is served typhoon style which includes a healthy topping of crispy garlic and chili. It is only mildly spicy and the crispy garlic offers a unique texture to the crab fried rice. Decent portion of the crab in the fried rice. I would rate this a 4 out of 5. The King prawns, scallops, and calamari wok fried with XO sauce is our favorite. I would score if a 5 out of 5. The dish is served in a clay pot so it is piping out. Generous amount of seafood and the glass noodles soaks up all the sauce so is quite tasty. The drinks are also unique here and worth checking out.
This restaurant was mentioned several times in conversations about where to eat in Sydney so we had to try it. You must make a reservation. You will not get a table without one. Our reservation was at 5:30pm which is when it opened. There was a mob of people outside waiting for it to open. It was well managed when the crowd started filing in. Our waiter (Ben) was great. He walked us through the menu and size of options to help us create a perfect meal. We started with dim sum. We got the steamed option and customized it to be 6 pieces instead of 8. Lots of seafood. It was so good. While the duck pancakes were a signature item, we skipped them so we could try some other options. The pancakes are really more like make your own spring rolls or like an Asian soft shell taco. Looked fun but ok that we skipped. Next was steamed prawns. This was a fav choice. The prawns were cooked perfectly and the ginger and cilantro worked well with the taste and texture of the prawns. Finally, we had pork and shrimp fried rice. Again, very good. The restaurant is in a building that looks like a refurbished warehouse. The exposed brick and unfinished ceiling give it a cozy, authentic vibe. It's super busy and, therefore, quite loud. While we were there with only two people, I can see this being a great place with a bigger group to be able to share and try more dishes. Great experience. So glad we were able to eat here.
This is one of the most iconic restaurants in Sydney. Based on my research online and when asking a couple friends, everyone was raving about Mr. Wong, so we made reservations about 1.5 months in advance to secure a spot! Each reservation guarantees two hours and we made ours for 2:00P. Their lunch hour ends at 3:00P and the restaurant closes for a couple hours before dinner. When we arrived, it was completely packed, but started clearing out after 40 minutes, so for the second half of the reservation, we didn't have any other customers around us and could enjoy our meal in a quieter environment. The prices here are on the steeper end for Chinese and dim sum dishes, but the options are very diverse and unique. I'd consider their dim sum items elevated and with many that I've never seen anywhere else. + JADE DUMPLING, PRAWN & CHIVES w/ KING CRAB (A$24): The large snappy prawn in each dumpling was the focus, especially being encased within an ultra-thin wrapper. I didn't notice more than just a pinch of crab, so that was a little disappointing. If not for the menu, I probably wouldn't have even known there was crab in there. + PAN FRIED SICHUAN STYLE LAMB DUMPLING (A$24): Exactly how it sounds, the filling of this crispy fried dumpling consisted of shredded lamb with some spice. It was pretty gamey, but also bold, and any fans of lamb will enjoy it. + CRISPY BEAN CURD ROLL w/ WILD MUSHROOMS (A$21): These were so good, we ordered a second plate! Similar to an egg roll, crispy bean curd sheets were filled with a mix of wild mushrooms and shredded carrots. The rolls were served on top of a hoisin-like sauce that was both savory and sweet. This is a must! + ROAST DUCK & CHIVE DUMPLING (A$22): The chives were pretty potent but I could still taste the five spice of the tender duck. The meat was lean and surprisingly didn't contain any fat or gristle. I enjoyed how unique these were and could have eaten another order of them. + BBQ PORK RICE ROLL (A$24): The rice roll was silky and had a good portion of chopped BBQ pork. We also ordered two items from the regular menu. + TWICE COOKED GREEN BEANS (A$34): A solid vegetable dish! The beans were cooked nicely and still had a crunch. There was a generous amount of minced pork and the XO sauce had a mild enticing spice. + HONG KONG STYLE RICE NOODLES (A$42): This is their version of a beef chow fun. The noodles had a delicious char flavor and based on how tender the beef was, I could tell it was great quality. Bean sprouts and chives added some crunch and the dish had just the right amount of soy sauce. Service way surpassed our expectations. Our waiter was so friendly, had a great sense of humor and went above and beyond by changing out our plates three times during the meal. Additionally, most of the dim sum items include only three or four pieces, so for the ones that only included three, he suggested just adding one additional piece to the order (at the price of an extra piece), so that we didn't have to get two orders of all of them. 4.75 stars.
Lovely ambiance, polite service, but okay food. Mr. Wong is a very popular restaurant in Sydney and requires a substantial deposit. The restaurant itself is located in an alley off bridge street. It has a nice vibe. But for the price I was expecting the food to be of much higher quality. The dimsum was overcooked. The Peking Duck was solid but definitely not elite. The stir fried mushrooms were tasty but a bit on the greasy side. The cocktails were quite good. The review is a reflection of what one would expect from a high quality restaurant.
If you're looking for an excellent Chinese food, highly recommend this one. From the moment you walk up to this place, it looks like a dimly lit abandoned bodega and located in an inconspicuous alley that similarly feels out of place. The only that gives away that there's a business there is the long line that forms 15 to 20 mins before they open. But it's exactly what adds to the curiosity and ambiance of the place. It has 2 levels for dining and a bar on the bottom floor. Once you enter. The waiters are lined up behind the hostess ready to welcome and wait on the customers. They have an extensive menu that you can request to be half or small size as they come in big servings and is on the pricier side. Thanks to my server who volunteered that information and he also pointed out the dishes, especially the vegetable dishes, cannot be ordered in a smaller size.
The lively atmosphere made for a memorable birthday dinner in Sydney. I opted for bar seating which was perfect for my solo dining experience. The bartender was personable and offered a few menu items. I selected the Sydney rock oysters... they were super fresh. I prefer sweet oysters and these were not. I also ordered the crab fried rice. The half of the half order was enough for two people. What I most appreciate about Mr. Wong was that it seemed less touristy and looked like more of a local spot. If you ever find yourself in Sydney, give them a try. I promise you'll enjoy the experience.
Mr Wong is a modern take on the traditional and heartwarming Cantonese cuisine, with stars including dim sum and Peking duck. We came here as a walk in on a weekday night, and they were thankfully able to seat us. It seems that this place is always busy when we pass by, filled with people dressed to the nines for a night out or in casual garb looking for a good, hearty meal. Mr Wongs is best when shared, as most of the dishes are quite large and you can hardly stick to just one. We got the Peking duck, king crab fried rice, wonton soup, king Pao chicken, XLB, cod, and braised pork belly. It was definitely too much food for two people, but I can't think of a single dish that I would have forgone. My advice is to go with a big group so you can try everything. My personal favorite fish was the cod. It was perfectly sweet and melted in your mouth. The rice was a close second and was definitely very filling. Next time I'd love to also try a dessert!
Delicious tea. DELICIOUS dim sum. We did think the sides were portioned WAY too big. We were a party of 3 and got the crab fried rice, 9 dim sum, the prawns, and green beans and we barely ate half of the side dishes which made me feel really wasteful. But the dim sum was divine and the service was delightful! And I could've drank the liquid the prawns came in as a soup it was so tasty! Beautiful environment both upstairs and down.
The food here is the best Chinese I've ever had! Forget NYC OR SFO or anywhere else. I've been to 6 continents and I don't take this lightly Wow It's unfortunate that our server was rude and short with her responses. I cannot say that would deter me from revisiting this establishment prior to leaving Sydney. Yes, it's that good

Perfect ambiance like a movie. What a hidden gem. Found it as we looked for another establishment and noted the big lines. So we figured food is probably worth it it. And much to our surprise everything we ordered was amazing. Including the green beans. This cannot be replicated @ home. Then infected friend in Hong Kong who is a foodie and confirmed that he visits whe he is in town! Great dimsum !!! Big lines to get in ,though we were able to snag bar seats. Overall the staff very attentive as usual for Sydney standards. Now comes the food. quality was above average and memorable to come back a second time. read more

When in Sydney go to Mr Wong for a fabulous Cantonese dinner. A beautiful old, dark restaurant with wooden walls that is always crowded. We had the excellent Peking Duck and superb beef cheeks. Good service which was helpful and courteous. But go for the food. You won't regret it. read more

I've eaten a fair amount of Cantonese food in my life (both upscale and not) and this place definitely hits the mark! The flavors are clearly there and the food was all so delicious! Got lucky to walk in at 7pm on a Sunday and get waitlisted for only 15 minutes! I was worried it would be too full! We had the Peking duck, Mr Wong Singapore noodles, and morning glory. All of them were fantastic! The Peking duck had a really thin layer of crispy skin though so I would recommend eating it separately because it gets lost in the whole breading when you put it together on the pancake. I also thought the pancake was a bit large for what you end up creating, thus giving the whole bite too much "bread", but it was still delicious and something I'd order again. The service was subpar- couldn't flag down a waiter for ages even though we were seated at the bar- but it wouldn't detract me from coming again! read more

First night we came we just had bar seating with Phoebe... rock star bartender .. 6 stars out of 5.. world class.. gave us solid recommendations.. left happy.. Next/last night in Sydney... got there at opening.. requested her section.. nothing changed .. quality all around was untouchable! Mr. Wong was our first lunch in Sydney and WOW! This place was beyond words. After walking around the CBD, hubby and I worked up an appetite. We arrived at Mr. Wong and were immediately seated in the downstairs dining area. We ordered dim sum as our appetizer. The roast duck and chive dumplings and the pan fried chicken and chive dumplings. We enjoyed both, however, the pan fried chicken dumplings were our favorite. For the main course, we shared the sweet & sour crispy pork hock and Mr. Wong special fried rice with pork and prawn. The pork was truly exceptional! Perfect balance of flavors, well executed crispy exterior, flavorful, and succulent! The fried rice was so delicious! Prawns were perfectly cooked, lots of green onions, super flavorful. The service was top notch! From the hostess to the run runners, everyone was so friendly! Overall, excellent food and service. I would highly recommend Mr. Wong! You will not be disappointed. read more

Not very many people in this country use yelp which is great in this case so I can say: SAVE YOUR MONEY AND GO SOMEWHERE ELSE. if all you want is to be near people spending money and don't care about nuance or attention from the staff, this is the place for you. You can go to 10 better restaurants for the cost of one meal here. 10!! Every time we needed anything we had to flag down our waitstaff. The meal wasn't bad, but it wasn't new or different. Any Cantonese restaurant will make these dishes. In larger sizes and with more attentive staff. Can't get a reservation? You just saved yourself $400 ! Lucky you! Now you can go anywhere else and have a wonderful time. I'm no stranger to an expensive meal, we tend to go to a stared restaurant each year for my birthday. And each has some element that justified its merits as pricy beyond usual. This just doesn't. Their space has zero signage and is in an alley. Which is actually kinda cool. Makes me feel like a discoverer. Try another place. You'll thank me. read more

First time writing a review after traveling to different countries to try different food/restaurants. As a solo traveler for the past two years, this is probably the first time I felt so welcomed. From the hostess, waiter, etc. They continued filling my water at appropriate times, and had small conversations (which still allowed me to enjoy my meal) I didn't know what I wanted to eat. So the waiter was able to put together a sampler "fried" plate for me allowing me to try different fried dim sum (which wasn't on the menu). The steam and fried dim sum was the best I ever had coming from someone who eats dim sum religiously. You can tell each one was unique with its taste, texture, and a combination of different substance. The fried rice was ok, but if you had the fried eggplant (omg) that was so good and the sauce elevated the rice. The ambience was a bit loud and dark if you don't like those kind of environments. But I went for the food and definitely would go back. So far best food and experience in Sydney that I tried. read more

Make your booking as soon as you can. We tried and tried knowing that we were only in Sydney for a total of seven nights over a thirty day period. We wanted to dine with Mr. Wong in the early evening (6:30/7:00 timeframe) and had to take what we could. About six weeks in advance of our arrival we started looking. There was only one available at 6:00PM and we grabbed it and it was on our next to last night in Australia. We arrived and got one of the best seats in this huge restaurant upstairs right next to the kitchen so we could watch some of the food being prepared. This was our fifth visit to Mr. Wong's over the past years so we knew we wanted the Peking Duck with Pancakes so then had to decide what to add. We both wanted everything but it came down to the Queensland King Prawns. The Peking Duck with Pancakes arrived and it was pure beauty. The duck skin was perfectly roasted with that crisp feel. And the duck meat was tender and succulent. The pancakes are always some of the best we ever have where ever we travel. The homemade hoisin sauce, along with the slices of cucumber and scallions were perfect making the little Peking Duck bundles of greatness. The Prawns arrived in their dish of beauty. They were huge, I would guess they were U-8/10 size. They were deep fried with spicy salt and 3 types of peppercorns. Haven't figured out what "spicy salt" is but the peppercorns could have made the salt spicy!!! The peppercorns made the dish. The prawns were peaking out of this massive bowl of them. I don't know the exact mixture of the three types but do know they had our favorite...the szechuan/sichuan reddish peppercorns...we search for them. You either love them or hate them. The Prawns were extremely fresh no shrimpy taste. Not too much batter, just enough. Can't wait to try this dish again. I might add that this Fried Prawn with Spicy Salt and Peppercorns it now at the top of our list of all-time favorite dishes. Service was great. Dishes were explained in detail. Prices are very reasonable considering the quality of ingredients. Atmosphere is some of the best in any restaurant we have visited. Wish Mr. Wong's would come to Atlanta. Highly recommend. The first thing I will say is that if you're serious about dining at Mr. Wong, make certain that you have reservations. It is very popular, but for very good reasons. The service was impeccable, the food simply delicious, and the atmosphere that of a popular restaurant with very supportive patrons. One might say that the noise level was medium or greater, but it's simply because the dining patrons were busy conversing with one another, rather than staring at their cell phones.
