Food was good. We had the pork spareribs, chicken feet, pork dumplings and shrimp dumplings. Very authentic flavors. Service was mediocre. Our waitress was a super disappointed we came in right at opening: 9am and was muttering how inconvenient it was we decided to eat so early to her coworker in Cantonese not knowing we could understand her. We are used to big crowds and long lines by opening at our dim sum places so we came in early to beat the crowd. Kitchen took almost 45 mins to prepare our beef noodles and it was a total disappointment. Kitchen is super slow and did not have anything other than a few items by opening. We wanted egg custard to finish our meal and was informed it would take another hour before they would be ready. I guess things are cooked fresh on the day which is good but shouldn't it all be ready by the time you open? The little old ladies pushing the cart were very nice and polite. Quite good Cantonese Chinese restaurant on the 2nd level of The Stockland office building. It is just across the street from the back door of the Sheraton Grand at Hyde Park...for very convenient for travelers. They do Dim Sum 9:00a - 3p most days. Came Sunday at 9:30, already a quarter full. I had har- gow, chicken feet, trip, lotus leaf sticky rice (lo mai gai). The chicken feet were perfect and the har-gow full and plumb with shrimp. I like the way they do the lo mai gai. Smaller portions, devided between 3 wrappers instead of the usual 2. So you get more filling to rice ratio. Plus they wrap the race in parchment paper before wrapping in the lotus leaf, so it's much easier to peel apart. The trip was a little disappointing however. The flavor was very good but good, but should have been cooked a bit longer, as some of the pieces were still quite chewy. I patiently waited for the egg custard to come out, as they were still baking them. Worth the wait, they were perfect! Light flaky crust, and perfectly light and tender egg custard. Plus, they were the "normal" palm size tart...not those mini ones, that many places switched to, to save money. Honestly, these were the best I have had anywhere! As I was leaving at 10:45, the place was buzzing and almost full. They were also bringing out many more items, such as stuffed bell pepper (with shrimp) and stuffed egg plant (with pork). We ordered: Har Gow - 2 orders Shiu Mai - 2 orders No Mai Gai - 2 orders Bean curd roll - 1 order Scallop dumpling - 1 order Shrimp and chive dumpling - 1 order The total was $120!!! Seriously, that's wayyyyy over priced. The dim sum quality is good, maybe the best in Sydney but not on par with the best California and twice the cost. There is no menu with prices which is not uncommon in Sydney and often leads to being over charged. Dined at Palace Chinese for Christmas dinner while in Sydney. We got in a little too late in the day to have a traditional Christmas lunch so figured a Chinese dinner would be a great option! Huge space with lots of full tables. Seemed like a mix of locals and visitors to Sydney. Huge menu of traditional and modern dishes. There's a full bar as well. I went with jasmine tea and my husband got a Tsingtao beer, which was light and crisp. We split two servings of dim sum platters. These came with a duck dumpling, a prawn dumpling, shrimp Shumai, and a veggie dumpling! Very tasty and nice to have a combination of different ones. We ordered two soups - long soup and bamboo fungus/crab meat. The long soup was basically a Chinese noodle soup with no chicken. Simple but enjoyed the flavor very much! Bamboo fungus/crabmeat was very gelatinous with great flavor. Lastly, we split an eggplant and minced pork hot pot and steamed rice. This dish was enormous!!!! Easily could have been split with 3-4 ppl and we took half of it home. Great flavor, super soft eggplant, mild spice, and a nice ginger taste. Would definitely come back! read more

We met ancient friends here on a Saturday night and had a great meal. The dishes were all top notch - one of the best Chinese restaurant experiences we've had outside China (among more than 40 such dinners around the world over the last couple decades, mostly US). We had a wide range of dishes - pork, steamed fish, dumplings, duck, beef with veggies, steamed greens. Everything was good. The ambience was great - crowded and noisy, but we could still hear each other (except for when a wedding celebration drum drowned out everything for 10 minutes). Indicator of great food: people were competing for the inevitable leftovers. Will savor the memory and will go back next time we're in Sydney. read more

Probably the worst meal I've had in years. I went with friends for Chinese New Year and I had the veggie 'menu'. I hesitate to say 'menu' as half of it seemed like slops rescued from the bin. I started with soup so bland it made toast seem exciting. Thick, gloopy and with hardly any veggies inside it was like trying to force down diluted MSG-flavoured wallpaper paste. I had to empty a serve of chilli and soy sauce to make it even near palatable. If I hadn't been starving hungry I wouldn't have eaten it at all. The next dish was the 'Buddha Bowl', presuming that the Buddha liked congealed, rubbery mushrooms covered in a brown MSG 'sauce'. There were a few sugar-snap peas that tasted fine - the rest of the dish was like chewing vague-plastic mushroom shaped items that probably would outlast the next 1,000 years. Then the 'spring' rolls, if spring meant lying flat on the plate covered in a mushy wet coating and having given up on all pretence of being a tasty, inviting dish. It was like eating rubberised glad-wrap with an undefinable paste inside. The best dish, up until this point, was the plain rice. They did that well. Finally, and to my great joy after being vegetarian for 35-year, they brought out some green beans. These were bright and well cooked - and covered in mincemeat. I don't mind if places do this - but I do mind not being told in advance and being half way though eating some before realising. It's not just rude, it's really disrespectful and actually dangerous if people have food allergies. I don't - but it sums up the attitude of the place which is 'give us your money and don't make complaints'. I didn't throw up but felt like it, and that wasn't even the meat - it was the MSG overload. I paid $110 for this 'meal' including wine. I went by myself. Not a clever thing to do really because I ate for three. I did not need that last dish of salt and pepper squid. I could probably have done without the steamed scallop dumplings, and maybe the prawn har gow was excessive. But the XO chilli seafood dumpling was the bare minimum that can be eaten with the snow pea dumplings wouldn't you agree? Nice and close but I think Marigold just shades it for food and tradition. Well worth a go - my view is that yum cha is one of the most important food groups and an essential part of a balanced diet. Went there for lunch on a Friday and was glad I went there straight at 12 noon because the place quickly filled up soon after we got seated. The yum cha was good and there were lots of variety to choose from. My favorite is the Mango prawn roll. It was delicious. I love Yum Cha (or Dim Sim for our US counterparts). I have gone to most of the big name locations in Sydney and I personally love Palace Chinese the best. They offer all the standard Yum Cha fare, but excel at a few amazing dishes; 1) Salt & Pepper Squid - cooked fresh to order, you have to ask them to get you some - but it's really worth it. As a bonus the waiter that brings you this dish is really nice and probably the only staff member that laughs. 2) Gin Chong Fun (aka, Fried Rice Noodle w/ Peanut sauce) - you can't find this dish at every restaurant, but Palace does it and it's quite good. Marigold might do a better version imo. *Protip*: If you park downstairs in the Picadilly Parking lot (entrance on Castlereigh St, near 133) you can get your parking validated after you finish your meal. Just hand your parking ticket in with your Yum Cha card and they should give you voucher. NB: We are still unsure about what the spending requirement is for this, but it seems to be that you have to spend a certain amount to get this offer. Definitely the best and most elegant in Sydney. Would return for the chicken feet and prawn rice paper vermicelli dumplings any day. As per a few other people's reviews - this place is neck and neck with Marigold for my top dim sum in Sydney. Pork buns have taken too place on the podium. They're just right and similar to what I've had in my favourite places in Hong Kong. Salt and pepper tofu is also outstanding - worth ordering a big serve from the menu if they e stopped serving towards the end of the 11-3 dim sum (as happened to us when we lobbed in about 2pm and less trolleys started appearing). If you're serious about dim sum / yum cha and you haven't tried Palace Chinese Restaurant - do yourself a favour and get in here. Very worthwhile!! read more

Good Chinese Grub! We came here on a Saturday night around 730PM and parked in the garage. We didn't have a booking but the restaurant wasn't too busy, so we got seated right away. My cousin knew the manager so we just ordered straight from him. We got the Peking Duck Pancakes - yummo! And the Sang Chao Bao, which was just okay. We also got the steamed fish with veggies, the wasabi wagyu beef, salt and pepper prawn and squid and this scallop fried rice dish. There was only 5 of us and there was tons of food. The fish was nice, bit bland. The beef had a weird but tasty flavor, yummy salt and pepper seafood - fried, can't go wrong, and the fried rice was pretty tasty. We finished off the meal with orange slices, some red bean soup and this chocolate almond thing. Overall the bill was about $200 for a pretty decent meal. read more

Favourite yum cha place in all of Sydney. Love coming here after any kind of running event my friends attend..City2Surf, Half Marathons, fun runs, Full Marathons, etc. Anything that ends in the city before midday is an excuse to have yum cha here. There is a good flow of food, the waiters are typical Chinese restaurant waiters - they're not rude per se, but they're definitely not friendly. Came here for Yum Cha lunch last week. Busy which normally means good food. However, the majority of dishes were luke warm, and our table seemed to be one of the ones that all the good food just bypasses. After what seemed like an eternity they rolled around with the dessert cart which many at our table took advantage of selecting a number of the sweets. The benchmark at Yum Cha, the Steamed Pork Buns (or SPBs as I call them), reached our table as the very first dish (always a highlight) but the filling was lacking and they tasted ultra doughy. This place is ok, but there wasn't really a standout. Service was patchy. Minimal carts and when we asked for water, 3 people on the table were missed. I love this place as an alternative to Marigold if you want your staff to be somewhat friendly to you! You can't really go wrong with their food, very standard yum cha cuisine, their pork buns and salt and pepper squid are a personal favourite of mine. It's a nice place to go if you want a bit of a "fancier" atmosphere for your yum cha, on a weekday it's filled with business people from around the CBD area. Every time I've been here it's been busy so you know that it's got a high food turn around. I think the best thing about The Palace is the fact that they have an amazing dessert trolley! Not only do they have the usuals of jelly and mango pancakes but there are fruit tarts and chocolate cake and tiramisu! Hopefully you're not on a diet when you go there! read more

I enjoyed the variety of food and how quickly everything was presented to us/circulated throughout the restaurant. While it was nice to have the food available quickly, it was difficult to even have a conversation with at our table as we were constantly being interrupted by the wait staff. Despite the concierge's discouragement, I headed across the street from my hotel to take a chance on this Chinese Seafood spot on the second floor of a downtown mall. Despite my trepidation, I took comfort in the restaurant being half-filled but only with Chinese patrons. I looked around at the tables and was further encouraged by the food. We ordered a wide range of dishes and they were all spot on. The service was purposeful but unspectacular. The atmosphere was tainted by some unruly kids (I mean, come on, do you need to let your kid ride a scooter in the restaurant?) and I don't think you need to charge us for steamed rice when we order several dishes. We had been to this restaurant many times before, the last time was last year. We went there again today. OML, had the original chef gone or what? The food was very bland, the shui mei were overcooked and the prawn rice noodles were cold. Other dim sim such as sticky rice and pork spare ribs were not up to the temperature either. The BBQ bun was nice and the pumpkin cakes were up to the temperature. Will we come back there, a definitely NO NO NO though we had a 15% off because of getting out of that restaurant before 1230. This used to be my fave yumcha spot in Sydney but service and quality of food have deteriorated. I don't think the restaurant even reads these comments as complaints about lukewarm food has been around for some time and the problem persists. They also always run out of popular deserts. Friendly service staff have been replaced with grumpy ladies. I'll be avoiding this establishment for a while until they fix the issues. read more
