The place was packed even at 9.30pm on a rainy Monday night so I knew this was the place to try and get a bite after landing in Sydney. Many Asian diners and I could hear conversations in Thai, Malay, Cantonese, Indonesian and Mandarin while waiting. Brought out hot tea as soon as we sat down. Had prawns with scallions and ginger. Husband had mixed seafood with vegetables over rice. Both dishes came out steaming hot. Both were very tasty! Sometimes you just get a craving for something and it lingers on the mind until you get what you want. For this reason I had to visit the heart of China town and get me a Superbowl of Congee. The venue itself is pretty low key in appearance. Its got basic seating and bland coloured walls, so don't come here for the aesthetics basically. Its Cantonese food and the menu has got lots of options that will no doubt cover all your eating needs. They also do some dessert style drinks for those with a sweet tooth. I came here for one thing and one thing alone, that being the Congee. The Congee menu is pretty good with lots of different fish, chicken or vegtable options. I felt like seafood so opted for that. An institution of Chinatown - I remember going here with my parents as a child and they have always done Cantonese staples quite well particularly congee. The other dishes have deteriorated over the years in my eyes but the congee remains top notch. My favourite thing about their congee is the fact that is has been cooked for a long time and its a smooth soup without solid grains of rice. Back in the day we used to have pippies and fried noodles but I avoid these now and just stick to congee and soup or braised noodles. One thing that has improved a little bit is the decor and the general hygiene. It was certainly dubious in the 90's to my teenage eyes but has improved and the bathrooms are a little cleaner now. As with all the other Chinatown joints, they do outdoor seating as al fresco dining has certainly picked up in the last 10 odd years. Are you looking for the flavour of a typical and simple Cantonese Chinese restaurant with the additional option of sitting outside to enjoy the nice Sydney weather and do some "people watching"? Well, this place may have your answer. The new friend told me that this place has been around for a while and it is fairly popular. We sat outside and we both ordered 乾炒牛河 (Gon Chao Ngau Ho in Cantonese Chinese) which are these dry fried flat rice noodles with beef and bean sprouts. The texture of the noodles was good, the beef was tender and it was nice that they added some sesame seeds to enhance the flavour a little. One dish should be enough to fill one's stomach for dinner. The prices of the noodle dishes are a little bit high at around $15. I came back again, this time to eat 粥 (juk), which is congee. During the mornings, they have this morning special for under $8 where you get to order a meal set that includes congee with some side dishes. I ordered the D 餐 (chan), where for $7.50 you get some minced pork congee, some 腸粉 (cheung fun), which is this rice noodle roll doused in sauce, a small plate of fried noodles and a dumpling. The congee was pretty good, not too thick or watery. The 腸粉was not bad and the fried noodles were also good. Everything tasted good and I felt the small flavour of a simple Cantonese restaurant, and almost felt like I was in Hong Kong just by looking around inside. Don't expect very fast service and this place is definitely not one of the cleanest restaurants. If I came to this place at 1:00 AM after an insane evening in Sydney, I can imagine the food being tastier after heaps of drinking. Overall, I don't think this is the best Chinese restaurant either in Sydney, the state of NSW, or in Australia, but the food here is tasty, not terrible and definitely inexpensive compared to other restaurants in a city like Sydney. I really hope the Chinese food will be better if I go to places like Hurstville or Chatswood. However, this is a decently good Chinese restaurant if you want to sit outside and "people watch" in Sydney. read more

An institution in Sydney's Chinatown. Super Bowl has been one of the long standing establishments synonymous with late night dining after a night out. Been going here with friends ordering our usual Lean Pork & Century Egg Congee, X.O Pippies, Salt & Pepper Squid and freshly made Chinese donut to dip into the steaming bowl of congee. Although tonight we go all out and get the 2 course Peking Duck which is fairly good. Light, crisp and flavour laden skin for the pancakes and San Choy Bao for the second course, nothing to write home about but the rest was finger licking delish! Favorite Chinese spot in Sydney even before the last time I went here.. It's cheap, it's delicious, it's gritty atmosphere (basically not super elegant) is my kind of place. The Ma-Po tofu here was the best out of all of Sydney, but still NOT SPICY, spicier than all of the places I tried in Sydney.. But, it's like not a thing in Sydney to have it spicy (my biggest disappointment). The congee here is great, noodles are great, battered eggy dishes are great.. Pretty much everything here is good.. I'm from NYC and this reminds me of the Chinatown restaurants from there. We had stir noodles with beef and it was good. The meat was slow cooked to fall off the bone. The noodles were egg noodles and standard tasting. The tea tasted like water. My table wasn't clean. The price is cheap though during happy hour with 20% off! I'd come back for a cheap lunch. What can I say, it's a really good place in the city to get Cantonese style congee which isn't home made and also a good place to get chow mein. There are many other dishes on the menu but it's most famous for their congee. I usually get congee (there are many you can choose from) and also bring people here if they have never tried congee or in that case, Cantonese style congee before. The place can be busy depending on the day and time you go but it's worth it for the congee. The service is ok, not bad and they do their job. They also open quite late, up to 2am I think on most days and later on Friday and Saturdays, which is a good thing if you are hungry and searching for a place still open to eat. I wasn't happy with this place at all. I order a beef dish and specifically asked if it was spicy and Deep fried. It wasn't deep-fried it was boiled and soggy. when it came to flavour the beef wasn't cooked in the sauce the sauce was poured over the meat making it very unbalance and it wasn't spicy. I was craving some sort of noodle soup and needed a big meal for what was going to be a big night out. I chose the beef noodle soup - beef, noodles, and Chinese broccoli. This thing is huge! There was absolutely no way that I could eat it all, which is too bad because I really liked it. The broth was extremely flavorful, the noodles were nicely cooked and there were plenty of them. I could have liked if the Chinese broccoli was cut into smaller pieces - they were just slightly over bite sized which made them a little difficult to eat, especially being in a soup. The beef was also a little fatty, but luckily the fat was pretty easy to separate from the meat. We had to walk up to the front to pay our check because a waiter never came around with it. We were sooooo upset because we ordered the Peking duck (among other dishes) and when we got the plate thought we only got maybe a fourth of the duck and we looked closely and underneath Ate just a whole bunch of those rice crisps!!!!! I called the server and asked for the rest of the duck and he said something that is not comprehensible. If I were going to some this place up in just three words I would say BLAND, EXPENSIVE and GREASY! Oh and CRUEL, if I'm allowed to ad a fourth but more on that later. It is honestly Australianised Chinese food at its worst. We ordered handmade noodles with prawns and lemon chicken without any entrees or drinks and it was $40!!!!!!! I wouldn't have minded so much if it had actually been nice but it wasn't. The noodles were super bland and the chicken was not only rubbery but also coated in an inch thick, greasy batter. To make matters worse the live seafood they had (those crabs and fish in a tank some restaurants feature where you can pick which one you want to have killed and cooked) were living out their final days in misery. The crabs had their claws tied up with string and barely had room to move. Meanwhile the poor fish were tightly packed in and had barely enough water to cover them. Well, food was so so nothing worth to specially mention about it. We had dinner, paid the bill, left restaurant then I suddenly remembered that 20% off offer, so I went back to ask for. The nasty look of that woman owner or manager I could never forget, she brought me to store front and finger pointed the small writing under big 20% off letters, and said you have to finish and leave restaurant before 6pm to obtain the discount. I'm a big fan of this place! When ever I have a get together with my family I always bring them here. Especially during winter their congee with fried doughnuts really warms me up, but we usually go therer for the pipis in XO sauce.
