My dog has recently gone off her raw food. A friend gave me some midgrade kibble that she seems to like. I came in with a photo of the food looking for a better grade equivalent. No small pets (rash of sick pets they stopped taking stock from a breeder that was sending them clearly sick pets) so not their fault they had no hamsters I came here for one. Food selection for hamster not a lot to pick from The store is pretty old. And 2 levels. So except some walking. Funny thing is FISH is sold upstairs. All that water hahaha the weight of that. Downstairs dog and cat. They have a lot of selection. And carry the usual (cheap brands mid price and high end, and they do carry raw, and they carry single ingredient treats. My dog is a spoiled grain free gmo free filler free single ingredient dog. So she as able to have a few things from here. Walked away with I think $60-80 of treats and chews. They sell bagged and bulk bin style I would come here again but definitely not walking here from skytrain station. Def take the bus. Forget which bus but one runs down this street stops right by the store. read more

If you're a fish person, I wouldn't recommend this Mr Pets location. Their fish selection and quality are lacking. On the ground level part of the store, I do see A LOT of supplies for cats and dogs. So if you're a dog / cat owner, I would recommend this place for food and supplies for your pets. On the plus side, they have free parking in the lot behind the building. If you take one of their spaces be sure to register your vehicle at the front cashier. read more

Mr Pets on Commercial is one of the few places in Vancouver that sells ferrets and ferret products. Most pet stores do not. They normally always have 2 in stock. They are 239$ each I believe. I like that they have a play section set up for them, and they aren't just shoved into a small cage. They also have a huge selection of all sorts of pet food and accessories for most other pets. The staff is always friendly and helpful. I totally stop in when I'm in the area and you should too ! read more

Sadly I have to give this place a low review. While I like most of the staff and the prices here, the manager is an absolute beast. She is incredibly rude to customers as well as her staff, yelling across the store at them to do a task that is not urgent just to prove a point. She's controlling, and harsh and it makes me feel sorry for her co-workers and wish I had another mr.pets option locally. If I knew how to complain to their head office, I would. Someone needs some sensitivity training!!! Good prices tho. Better than Bosley's or Tisol. Weigh the benefits vs labour it is to deal with this human. Made an account just to leave this review! Was helped by a super knowledgeable and helpful worker named Elsie who found the cause of my birds plucking then showed me ways to stop it, which worked! She also showed me how prepare my room to let my birds fly in it without getting hurt or lost, which is something I always wanted to do but just didn't know where to start. Love this store so much. I've been going to my neigbourhood Mr Pet's for years to buy supplies for my rescue dogs. At times, I've appreciated knowledgable and helpful service from the manager and other employees. At other times, I've seen and heard the manager behave agressively,controlling, dismissive, and harsh with people - employees and customers. Today when I was buying some dog food, I overheard a new employee briefly say something in Spanish and then I heard the manager immediately tell her "don't speak Spanish here". The mananger's foul comment was immediately followed by a long-time employee (bald white guy) saying "yeah only English here". It was awful. I wish I had said something on the spot to the manager and the guy but I didn't. I'm sorry about that. I've witnessed the manager bully people there for years. I will be following up by visiting the store again in the next week and addressing this in-person. I've decided that I'm going to get my dog supplies somewhere else going forward. read more

So today was a really odd experience. I went to get some hornworms for my bearded dragon.. I called before to ask if they were large and was told they were large. However when I got there they were really small. So I asked if I could get a little bit of food with them. The lady at the counter asked if I really wanted to steal their food, it was rotten she said. I replied saying "well they already seem to be eating this 'rotting' food so yeah I guess" she then said, oh so you want to take our food.. You know you can buy hornworm food it's $30 ($30 for a bug that costs $2). I WAS SO OFFENDED! I was just in your store and a young blonde clerk refused to sell me a goldfish. Infact the interaction was so offensive we may never set foot in your shop again! I have been creating a habitat for over 4 months in a 3 gallon vessel with live plants to create a natural aquaculture. Koi, carp and goldfish will grow only to the size of their habitat. I understand this because I am very experienced and have had goldfish in a glass vessel with live plants and had a pond with a bio-filter. The general rule is one inc of fish per galon. I have run an addoption center for the BCSPCA and have a very clear understanding of the 5 freedoms that are the guiding principals to animal welfare. How dare she judge me and my knowledge. OUTRAGEOUS! Even more astonishing was each of the goldfish tanks had dead fish floating. Clearly she lacks an understanding of animal welfare and abuse! read more

I am extremely upset with this store. I have found staff are constantly complaining about the manager. The issue "no respect from the manager." My personal experience with the store manager has been negative, disregarding or dismiissing any valid questions. I am boycotting this store and will give my business to Mark's Pet store. I have also experienced racist behaviour from staff. This is my experience my feelings. A good collection of pet foods and toys etc. They carry the food that I now call "kitty crack" because my cat literally follows me into the kitchen and miaows like a wild beast every time I go in there - just in case I'm going to feed him... *eye roll* The staff are chill and will help if you ask - they used to be a bit friendlier but there's been some turnover in the past couple of years. The prices are fairly reasonable and they have a pretty wide range of items. They now have a selection of very pretty dog biscuits by the counter, too! read more

The staff who work at this store often have a superior and snooty attitude. I have had several bad experiences with poor service at this store but continued shopping there for the convenient location. The last interaction was the final straw. They have unfair handling of their frequent buyers policy of dog food and if you are angry about it they refuse to deal with you even adding file to the fire by saying "I was going to help you but now I'm not" I thought it might've just been me but I asked a few of my more easy going friends and they reported that they don't shop there because They also find the staff snooty. read more

This store is the only one I can find that sells Pangea crested gecko diet and I'm very grateful for that. They also have a good selection of wood, cork bark, fake plants and other reptile necessities. I wasn't going to write a review but I saw from other reviews that people were upset that they had been refused an animal when their care was inadequate - that made me so happy! More than just fluff. (i.e.- Paris Hilton might get Tinkerbell a collar here, but there's no designer puppy sweaters!) One of my dogs has a sore spot on his neck from where his old collar was rubbing. So after years of wearing his blue collar out, it was time for a new one. I was kind of thinking about a green one. I was driving north on Commercial and saw this store, even from outside, it was easy to see a large selection of collars and leashes that they have hanging up on the wall. So the next I returned. Oh my gosh- forget a green collar! They had so many cute designs. I deliberated over a burgundy color with a dog skull n bones print or a light blue with dogs and fire hydrants on it. (Went with the blue- on a coin toss.) The selection was great, I even got a new collar for my other dog. She got a brightly striped collar- pink, yellow, orange, green... Looks like a stick of Fresh Stripe gum. In addition to the great collar/leash array, there are a lot of options for other pets. Do you need live crickets to feed to your strange reptilian pet? If you are a local and walk to Mr Pets on Commercial Drive, you're safe. If you use their private parking lot, you are fair game to get a parking ticket. You have purchase from the store to use their lot. I went in looking for a medium size food and some bulk bird seed, both if which they didn't have. I browsed the store and found a new dog dish. I am diabetic and the need to use a bathroom came on me quickly. I asked the cashier if i could their bathroom, it was in the back with the door open. She said no but there is a Timmies across the street. I went over to use the bathroom and came back. I had a ticket on my vehicle, ticket said i left the premises without my vehicle. So, i was supposed to drive across the street and drive back?! I messaged Diamond Parking and appealed the ticket. I was a long time customer at their North Van location until it closed. I wanted to continue shopping with them so i would travel to Commercial location from North Van. They denied my appeal as i couldn't provide a receipt and they said they observed me leaving the premises. I had put my dog dish down with the cashier before i went to use the bathroom. After a few days, i started getting phone calls from a collection agency. Unbelievable! I will never shop there again! read more

Today was the final straw. I was okay with slowly rising prices, more expensive than the competition. They were convenient. I was okay with the rotating door of rude staff, some who let me and other customers know what kind of terrible stuff goes on behind the scenes. They were convenient. Now my reason for cutting ties is something based more on honour. You see, they have a rewards program, buy ten get one free. One large $35 bag of cat food lasts about two months for me, so for the last five years it was a clockwork pattern of six or so bags a year, and then a free bag at two and a half ish years... Until I noticed something, the kind of thing busy people don't notice, and that you wouldn't notice as it's not exactly listed on the receipt: they're fudging their rewards program. It's currently September. I bought a bag in July, #9/10, May was #9/10, and the bag before that in March/April was also #9/10. I first noticed this in January when they told me it was #8/10, which I was told in October or so. The last denied it, and I spoke with the manager, and nothing came of it. I told myself I would stop shopping here when I hit bag #10. I recall even joking with the staff "please don't tell me this is #9" again, and the staff laughing because it was, and saying I must be keeping track. I said I was, and they got crabby, suggesting I'm cheap for tracking the rewards. So fast forward to today, lots of back and forth, snooty staff, and bag #10. So I get my free bag, and ask where else in Vancouver I can purchase this product as I'll not come back. The manager, who was there and appeared possibly intoxicated in posture, tone, and speech delivery, said after the staff asked if I would like to speak with them, and I said "no it's okay, we spoke last time and nothing was responded", "well I don't remember anything, there's lots of complaints and there's nothing I can do for you". So, that's that. I'm leaving with my business elsewhere not over free rewards. I'm leaving over disrespect, dishonesty, and a disregard for customer relations. Plus I'll save about 8$ on my usual pet products literally anywhere else. Win win. And with regards to the vendor copy paste response, there was never a case of points expiring. They just weren't counted by you. They were by me. read more

Mr. Pets on Commercial Drive is my go to store. My wife and I spent over a decade running an animal charity in B.C. When I have had questions about food and care products, I have always found this store provides through and accurate recommendations. Like many of these businesses they have young staff entering the business, but here I find that the management is very open to discussion and guidance to provide the best results for our animals. read more

The good: clean store, lots of variety of products, decent prices, good location. The bad: They sell small animals from breeders. This is so irresponsible when there are animals living in shelters, literally dying, waiting for a 'forever' home. Makes me wonder how much they really like animals in the first place. Also, just the word "selling" animals sends a bad message, kinda like animals are mere merchandise - on the contrary - some birds can live up to 50 years, cats and dogs can live 12+, they require, money, time, care, attention - hardly just something you can bring home and put in the closet. read more

I recently adopted a dog and got some great advice here. We were describing the symptoms of our pup and the associate gave us a good solution. The solution has since worked and her symptoms have disappeared. This place has a good selection of collars, food and a variety of snacks. They have a buying program for food, it's nice that they keep all the information for you and you don't have to have one of the many stamp cards. I think if you're looking for your basic necessities, this is your place. The only con to this place is the back parking lot. For those of you who drive a lowered car or sedan, be cautious! Ohhh mr pets!! What would I do without you? I have been going to this store since I moved to Vancouver, and wouldn't even think about going to another pet store. They carry everything you could need for a dog, and there other sections look pretty stocked too. I have three dogs with sensitive diets, and I always can get the food they need here. As well as helpful products, such as the thunder shirt which has pretty much saved my home from destruction. My one dog has severe separation anxiety and rain (the manager) showed us this fantastic dog shirt. It basically works like a shirt for the dog to feel like a straight jacket does to humans. Ever since owning the jacket my dog no longer suffers. The staff here are always friendly and go out of there way to help you. Rain who I mentioned earlier, is the manager is awesome. She gets to know your pets, and is great at picking out new products for my dogs. What else can I say, I love mr pets!! read more

The staff have always been friendly and give other ideas on great products for my dogs and even helped fit him with a harness. Living right by Mr. Pet's is awesome! I am a bit of a fussy cat mom and my cat is a bit of a fussy princess- we could definitely be the subject of a nature vs. nurture debate- so i used to have to go to two different stores to get everything i needed for her... but not anymore! They have tons of super high quality brands, some of which i'd never seen in any other stores and have since sworn by! I should tell you, i'm the sort of person who shudders at the thought of feeding any pet the dried, cheap crap you can buy at Safeway. I mean, if i'm going to eat healthy (instead of eating a 3kg wheel of brie cheese, which is what i'd rather be doing) then goddammit, my cat is going to eat healthy too. You can buy cheaper cat food at Safeway, but then again, you can also buy Kraft dinner at Safeway. Buying your pet food from Mr. Pet's is like you choosing to buy from Whole Foods rather than Buy Low! Aside from a really great selection of healthy pet foods and natural health care, Mr. Pet's also has super great staff! Everyone there is really friendly, and recently one of the staff and i had a serious discussion about how sometimes wet cat food actually smells really good when you're hungry. I think one star in this review comes entirely from her not backing away when that topic of conversation came up. read more

I'd give negative stars if I could. I've never experienced anything like this, in my life! I was attempting to leave the store, their delivery truck pulled up as I was walking to my car and rather than give me a minute to exit customer parking, opted to block me in. I asked the delivery driver how I was supposed to get out? And he told me that it was an ongoing issue with that store, so I waited to speak to the employee, as the driver had just rung the bell. The employee who answered the door was Andrew, the same employee who had pushed past me while I was in line in the store, with a face mask around his elbow, ever so effective. As soon as he came to the door, Andrew gave me a dirty look and when I told him that I couldn't get out, he responded with "that's your problem". I told him I was a customer and had just been in the store. To which he told me he didn't care. Of course, this upset me and since I had earlier heard him referring to his manager upstairs, I said that I wanted to speak to this person. To which Andrew told me to "fuck off". As I had commented that of course, he was the same person I saw inside without a mask, when the store has signage asking people to wear them, Andrew let me know that "masks don't work" because he "knows science". Since I was clearly not getting anywhere with Andrew, I went back in my car and when I picked up my phone, he started walking around behind my car, taunting "oh, going to get on social media now, are you?" Finally the delivery truck had moved and while I was reversing, a woman in the doorway caught my attention and when I got out to talk to her, she too was giving me a dirty look and when I asked if she was the manager, as I wanted to address her employee's behaviour, she refused to answer. For my picky cats, Mr Pet's never seemed to carry the brand or flavours of food they needed. Like I said though, for basic pet stuff they've got a little bit of everything. As a groomer I'm astonished at their self serve dog wash. they expect someone who is not experienced to wash a dog properly and dry properly in 12 minutes, or pay 1$/a minute for longer? in a business sense i understand timing the shampoos etc ( shampoo/conditioner also do not tell you what is in them.) but timing the dryer is baffling to me. a complete scam unless you have a yorkie sized dog, I wish I would have known beforehand. Will not be going back. People should be told when purchasing that the dryer is timed, and the ingredients for their shampoos should be posted for doggos who have allergies or sensitive skin. read more

Mr Pets is set in a convenient location, on Commercial Drive, just a few doors down from East 1st Ave. They have a variety of pet food and supplies at comparable prices to the other chains. The staff typically ask you if you need help locating something. With that being said I find the staff to be very judgemental of what you feed your pet and use. They will say that the brands you currently use are essentially crap (especially if you use vet food). I just hate being judged like that and often leave the store in a sour mood for this reason. read more

Some of the staff are great and knowledgeable, especially their newer employees. They almost always have healthy bettas, which I appreciate, and I've usually gotten friendly service--with below's exception. They recently sold me three fish infected with columnaris, a violently contagious and deadly disease. All three died after a day, within hours of their first symptom--one within thirty minutes. When I took two of the dead fish back to the store to warn them about the disease, the employee who dealt with me repeatedly claimed that I had simply shocked them by improperly acclimating them. In reality, I acclimated them for hours into a clean, ammonia/nitrite -free tank, and they were completely healthy and active until the disease took them all. Despite me repeatedly explaining this, I was brushed off and told that they had succumbed to New Tank Syndrome, told to "educate myself", and lectured on properly cycling a tank (which I was doing). Two stars instead of one because I've had some great experiences there with their newer staff who work in the aquarium area and with the bettas. This experience really soured my view, though, since they were so quick to brush off my concerns and refused to do anything despite me bringing in testing parameters to show that they had not been poisoned by the cycle. The columnaris has severely endangered the life of my five other fish, and at this point I'm unwilling to return. Update as of May 31st: Despite tank bleaching and heavy treatment, three of my other cories are now infected as well. Still no response on the disease--Mr. Pet's' response below in no way addressed the problem and no action has been taken that I am aware of to ensure that they do not have a severe breakout of the disease in their own stock. read more
