I don't know what overcame my boyfriend when he suggested we stop at this place on our way somewhere else. I warned him I've never had good Chinese on the Pike but we stopped. Upon walking in to the place, I froze. I had nothing to say. You walk up to a counter with a menu board hanging behind the single guy with a cash register. Then your eye wanders to the faded construction paper with handwritten menu items taped up everywhere under the menu. My boyfriend, who spent 2 years living in China, ordered and then told the guy I was a vegetarian. I was too taken aback by the place to even order for myself. When I did ask for water I was handed a styrofoam cup and told water was in the cooler around the counter. The food came up really fast but it was bad. My veggies and tofu in brown sauce weren't as bad as my boyfriend's meal. I wish we hadn't stopped. read more

Staying at the Marriott Courtyard Rosslyn I found their flyer conveniently under my door when I checked in. Decided to give them a try and have the food delivered (order has to be over $15 for delivery to be included). Ordered - 2 x Spring Rolls ($2.60), Wonton soup ($1.75), Hunan Port with (white) Rice ($8.95), and Coconut juice ($1.70) - total comes up to $15 but was charged $19.56 so maybe $4.56 was delivery ...? Anyway, the food was pretty good, especially the Hunan Pork which was enough for 2. Menu claims that it was hot and spicy - I detected NO hot and spicy characteristic to the food. The wonton soup was disappointing - just broth and 3 thick wontons, with a miniscule piece of meat inside. The broth was tasty but that was it. Average is the best rating I can muster. read more

I have always driven by this place and have meant to order food from it. I did that two weeks ago and I have been back at least 3 more times on my way home from work. Food is not overly salty or seasoned as in most Chinese restaurants. They have a pretty good menu and there is even a healthy section in it. I really enjoyed the food and will be going back for more. I feel so bad dissing a neighborhood place, but there were so many things wrong I don't even know where to begin. First off a huge mistake was eating in, but in some ways I'm glad we did as we could see the true status of this place. The floor and walls are filthy. In the spout of the water cooler there was pink slimy grime, making the cleanliness of our water questionable. The tables that were unoccupied were not cleaned off for a while, one could tell by all the sticky food residue and we had a hard time finding a clean one. The worst were the insects--there was a fly buzzing around us and 3 or 4 very large fruit flies. We spent every other second swatting our food, felt like we were at an outdoor picnic. When I asked for a to-go bag for the rangoons we ordered I was handed a bag with a dirty smear at the top, and had to ask for another (shudder). It is one of the hottest summers DC has ever had and it felt like the AC was not on (to save money?) and felt like a sweatbox. The food was totally blah to bad Chinese takeout. I got the shrimp and chicken duo off of the chefs special menu thinking that it was a specialty dish and must be good. It was so bland and the dish was stuffed high with celery making it hard to enjoy. Overpowering with celery as another reviewer said. The general tsos was gross and rubbery. Our crab Rangoon had very little meat in it and was more of a fried doughy shell. Very low quality and value for the prices. I think the star rating is consistent with how the food tastes... Getting to the point -- it just isn't that good. We were famished from the day and wanted some take out. The food served its purpose, but I don't think I will be making regular trips here. Crab ragoons are a joke. Very little filling and very small in size to be charging you $4.95 for 6 of them. Chicken fried rice was 'meh' more than 'mmmm'. I was disappointed because fried rice is really hard to mess up, some how, they succeeded. Anyway, come here at your own risk. I never went back, but there are 4 Chinese places in the area and none are very good...so maybe they have some kind of "don't make the food too good..." pact. A lot of the reviews here are pretty bad, but in my opinion the food here is tasty and cheap enough for the amount they give. The place is a bit run down and not the typical restaurant anybody would go to, so I recommend just buying take out. The staff here is not the most hospitable people in the world, but its okay. I don't know about others, but the only things I order from Mrs. Chen's is General Tsao extra crispy,shrimp fried rice,crag Rangoon and hot and sour soup. My family believes it to be the best Chinese restaurant in our area besides Hunan Number One in Clarendon. Delivery is fast. You can dine in if you don't mind the company of Latin immigrants (I have no problem Columbia Pike rocks!) If you are expecting PF Changs then idk what to tell u cause you aren't getting that here you're gonna get tasty, greasy, American Chinese food. My food was promptly delivered by a super friendly delivery guy, which was a nice change of pace relative to the last Chinese place I had ordered from. The General Tso's chicken was definitely some of the best I've had in the area and the chicken lo mein was great too! Portions were very generous and they fulfilled my request for "no vegetables" in the lo mein and even put the broccoli for the General Tso's on the side. Many delivery places (Chinese or otherwise) often fail to even take notice of anything written in the special request/comment section, so this was greatly appreciated. There is a saying, "He who gives quickly gives twice." My order was delivered in record time and by a dude who was really polite. I tipped him more than I normally would have because I was so happy by the speed. I think I know why my order, placed around 7:30, was fast to come up. The delivery was well packed and had a large serving of each dish plus rice: orange chicken and Szechuan beef with vegetables. But the food was terrible. The orange chicken itself I would rate three stars. It wasn't great but it didn't taste cheap. The Szechuan beef was the grisly type I would expect from a take-out place, and I understand all the veggies come from cans, but the flavor was as if the beef had been tossed into a can of mixed vegetables with a spurt of brown sauce and set on top of a stove to be warmed. Most of the time I order from here and the food is spot on what I want. I haven't had a negative experience here. And I hope that experience isn't on the horizon. The service over the phone is the only reason it's not a 5-star rating. I believe in service that caters to the guest, and that drives my feedback. Whenever I call to order from here, I always feel rushed. And I'm not trying to have a long conversation, but sometimes I have questions about how food is prepared, what it is, etc. So that's the only draw back I have. The Orange Chicken is absolutely disgusting! It is soggy and they have the actual orange peels on it. The beef broccoli on the other hand, where do I even begin...I don't really think it is BEEF. It has a very "sea food" aroma and tastes that of fish. The broccoli that it comes with tastes very much of 'Cardboard". Did I mention COCKROACHES in the bathroom and also caught in mouse traps. 3 stars is a very accurate review for this place. It has decent Chinese food at a good price. So when you really want inexpensive Chinese, you can get it from here. If you want anything more than that, you will be disappointed. The delivery is also (generally) pretty quick. I like that you can order online. With that being said, you should take into account that Arlington doesn't have the best Chinese delivery food. If you want something REALLY good and have high expectations, go out to eat instead of ordering delivery. My recommendations on food: avoid the fried rice, it's not very good. Spring rolls are excellent in my opinion, as is the lo mein. The crab rangoon has a nice fry and is very crispy but the interior is mostly just cream cheese, so proceed accordingly. read more

This was one of the worst Chinese takeouts I have ever eaten. In fact it was barely edible. I threw away 85% of what I ordered: fried crab wontons and combination flat noodles. Gross. It was so bad that I just called the front desk of the Marriott in Crystal City to complain about the fact that the menu was found under my door upon arrival. Apparently they are SO bad and so offensive to most guests that the Marriott has routinely called the police about their trespassing to leave the menus and the Marriott is sending me up a complimentary meal for my trouble with them. I really hate to post this as Mrs Chen's Kitchen has been the go to Chinese food restaurant for my brother and me for years. I believe that perhaps due to the cost of food these days, the quality of the items the restaurant prepares has suffered quite a bit. There seems to be quite a cut back on the use of basic seasonings and, most notably, a cut back on just about all of the offerings containing shrimp, chicken and /or beef. Combination Lo Mein (soft noodles with chicken and shrimp) had a few slivers of chicken and three small shrimp. (I won't even mention the Singapore Rice Noodles from two weeks ago. It practically had no chicken or shrimp at all, just a massive amount of flavorless rice noodles). Szechuan Chicken was very very heavy on the shredded vegetables and very very light on the chicken. Hopefully, the old restaurant will return to its great food once again but until then, we'll be hunting for a new take-out establishment This used to have great Chinese food but no longer. I was in DC on businees and was staying at a local hotel outside DC. Since it was raining, I decided to order my dinner delivered for dinner. I looked in the binder that the hotel has in their rooms. I walked in and none of the four people working acknowledged my presence, not even the lazy dude behind the counter sipping a soda playing with his phone while the other three ladies were running around. When I finally was paid attention to, my receipt had $3 charge for bbq sauce, I definitely did not order that, turns out they charge you extra when you order online (RIPPING PEOPLE OFF).
