    Chicken teriyaki
    Jens J.

May Island is a great eatery with a wide variety of Asian dishes, with an emphasis on Japanese. We have visited May Island three times. The food and service are consistently good. Plenty of tables. The music could be turned down a touch. This time around, I ordered the chicken teriyaki and JP ordered the Sashimi Regular entrée. The chicken teriyaki comes with a nice-sized salad and miso soup. May Island let me swap out the miso soup for wonton soup. The teriyaki came with a very generous portion of chicken topped with a just-right teriyaki sauce. The chicken comes atop a bed of pleasing steamed mixed vegetables. The wonton soup came with a side of the little crackers for topping off the soup. The soup, which only had one stuffed wonton, was okay but could have stood to have more flavor. JP enjoyed the beautifully presented 16-piece sashimi entrée. The fish was fresh. The sashimi also comes in a 19-piece Deluxe version. A nice touch was at the end of meal when we were served an orange half.

It was the second time at this restaurant. Actually it's a family restaurant. It's so kind people there. They made a good sushi.

Meh. Ordered a lot to test it out and everything was ok. We had: General tso chicken - dry, very dry. Udon noodles - wanted more flavor Pork spare ribs app - very tough Tempura veggie app - ok. Maybe needed to be fried in a flavored oil or veggies seasoned. Not sure. Pan fried chicken gyoza - ok, not bad Steamed pork dumplings - Great! Would order again Small house salad - refreshing Hope this helps!

Spicy tuna roll and hot & soup soup

Had the hot & soup soup. It was temperature hot but not spicy hot. So had to add the chili paste. The meat was good in it, pork. Overall not bad for the price. The spicy tuna roll was good. I was only looking to snack today. I'll be back to try other dishes. What others ordered seemed good.

Only had carry out from here once so will give it another chance in the future. Again, only take out review and not a sit down review. Egg drop and wonton soup were both pretty good but we were not impressed with any of our sushi rolls whatsoever. It looked like they were poorly rolled (or pressed) but the fish did not smell or taste especially good. Again, may give this place another shot but not excited to try it

Always have a good experience! Love ordering a bunch for get togethers or parties! Fresh and reasonably priced

The restaurant was fairly quiet, which made for a relaxing dining experience. Service was exceptionally fast, and the staff was attentive throughout my visit. The atmosphere is clean, comfortable, and inviting, making it a great spot for a casual lunch or dinner. I ordered the shrimp teriyaki, which was $23. While it may be slightly higher priced than some alternatives, the quality, convenient location, and free parking make it well worth the cost. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely return in the future. If you're looking for quality Japanese cuisine in Old Town Alexandria, Hinata Sushi Bar & Grill is worth checking out.

However, the young male staff is rather rude and indifferent. First, off there is a Wi-Fi available "Caphe Guest" (see photo). I asked one staffer what the password was, because Caphe is in one of those sections of Old Town where wireless access, like Verizon, is notoriously poor. The guy gave me some garbled answer and walked away. Alrighty, so I asked another staffer and he said he didn't know what the password was and walked away. That leads up to my order of chicken pho. I asked for no cilantro and that same waiter repeated my request for no cilantro. But when the pho was brought to my table, the green in the pho looked suspiciously like cilantro. I asked the waiter about it. He looked at the pho and said it was not cilantro. I took a sip and quickly determined there was cilantro in the pho. When I tried to get my server's attention, as he was standing in back of the counter, he saw me and haughtily turned away. So, I took the pho up to counter and asked that my order be remade. To Caphe's credit, Caphe did correctly remake my order.. But the pho broth was brown and had an odd canned flavor. It just wasn't very good.

There's just something about the texture and flavor of a steamed bun that I'm just wild about. The onion pancake, which was actually three little pancakes, was tasty though a tad oily. We also ordered an avocado salad, tuna tartare and tonkastsu ramen. The garlic in the ramen was decidedly strong. But overall, this was a great experience and we want to return.
