The Pan Mee and Chicken Noodle Soups
    Michael C.

Here on a warm Fall day for some variation on typical Chinese food (Malaysian) and wound up at South China in Del Ray. An unassuming store front greets you to a basic 4 walled restaurant. But again, one doesn't typically need a fancy restaurant to get great Chinese food. The difference I found between traditional Chinese and the Malaysian is more of an Indian twist on staples (more spices and some spicier options), distinct soups and the noodles. On the latter, rather than the wide egg noodles are yummy fried and chicken noodles. As for soups, you've got to try the Pan Mee (House Special). It is unique with a chicken base, mushrooms, fish balls and mustard greens. Outstanding! We also pigged out on the Sayang Meehoon, which is the aforementioned fried rice noodle adorned with plentiful tofu and shrimp in a spicy soy bean sauce. Don't say that Chinese food is boring because it's all the same. We were impressed with the variety and quality, and I suspect you will be too.

Their food is great! This is more of a carry out place. If you decide to dine in, they will bring your food in the take out containers and you can eat there. Nothing fancy about this place. It's styrofoam plates and plastic forks however the food is delicious. Crispy egg rolls in a thick wrapper, crab Rangoon with a thick skin and tasty filling, the extra crispy kung pao chicken is dynamite! Their crispy Szechuan beef is awesome and their salt and pepper tofu was such a delicious surprise as well. The service is fast and the suggestions on what to order have been great every time! My nephew found this place while looking through pictures on google with white Chinese take away boxes and styrofoam and said this is what I want. American Chinese food and this place absolutely hits the spot. We've dined there in the summer and it's warm in there so keep that in mind if you plan to eat there. We prefer to have our food right when it's made so we toughed it out

Ordered pickup on a Sunday afternoon around 5PM. I had no issues with the pickup or the payment at all. We ordered off their website and were able to pickup our order easily within 20 minutes (could have been faster but we were able to choose the specific time of our order) We got the sesame beef and general tso's chicken. Both were really good. The sauce was delish and both our dishes came with some steamed broccoli which I always like to use as a sauce sponge. My beef was a bit hard to get through, but using a knife I was able to get it into smaller more manageable pieces.

I love food places that look a little "hole in the wall" ish. It's not a very big place and not a lot of decor but it gets the job done when it comes to Chinese food. The food was hot and delicious. We got plenty of condiments and our fortunes were good! My lo me in was a little oily but still enjoyable. I would order from here again!

Very basic Chinese place. Zero atmosphere but good prices for decent food. Owner is nice. Other workers are so so. Loved the String Beans and Kung Pao Chicken. General Tso was also decent if ordered with light sauce. Give them a try if you're in the hood

As a first time customer I was impressed with the prices.. The "Pork Fried Rice" was pretty good.... I tried their egg rolls and Pork fried dumplings.. I probably wouldn't do that again.. The employees were super friendly and they kept the restaurant nice and clean I will be back for lunch

We got the crunchy rice with sour pork (naem khao thadaeu), pork shoulder (ping), fried catfish (patod), chicken pad thai (kua mee), and warm coconut milky dessert (bua loy). All the dishes were delicious but a bit more salty than Thai. Feels like a lot of fish sauces in all the dishes. The crunchy rice came with lettuce but ours were not the best lettuce. The fried catfish were nicely fried with a perfect coating. Definitely a dish to get. The pork shoulder is another dish to get. Nicely seasoned with sticky rice. Their version of pad thai is uniquely different than Thai. A bit more sweet but the lime makes it better. Wife wanted to try bua loy dessert. It is a warm sweet dessert that balanced out all the salty flavors of the dishes. Something to try as well. Flavor are still the same. The dishes we order were too much for 2 of us. My only complaint was the restaurant smelled like smoke when we walked in. Not the kind where there was a fire in the kitchen but more like someone smoking in the kitchen?

When I arrived to pick up, there was a woman helping hand out orders. I told her my name, she hesitated, looked through order bags on shelf, found a bag and handed it to me. When I got back home and my son opened it up, he discovered it wasn't our order. Even the name on the bag was wrong. The only thing close was the persons name on the order was the same first letter as mine. Ugh, I had already driven an hour to get home and was disappointed in myself for being in a rush since late work day and another hour to get food home, that I didn't at least checking the name on the order - let alone the contents like I normally do. I reluctantly called the store to report I was given the wrong order, afraid it would be difficult to find a way to refund since I wasn't going to drive an hour back to store. As luck would have it, I spoke with Roberto. He was very apologetic and offered to redo my order and I could pick up again in the future. He gave me his number so that I could give him a heads up when it would be convenient to stop by and he would have it ready. Two days later I texted him and he had it ready for my son to pick up when he was in the area again. Was such a relief for it to work out this smoothly to correct a mistake. Although the order pickup was unfortunate - the resolution and accommodation to correct completely minimized the inconvenience. Thank you Roberto! I won't hesitate to order from there again - the food was cooked great!

Ginger at MGM National Harbor…read more I recently stopped by Ginger before a concert at the MGM, and the convenience alone made it an easy choice. Since it was my first visit, I was excited to try something new, and overall, it was a solid pre-show dinner experience. My dining companion and I shared the Ginger Salad, Edamame, and Crab Fried Rice topped with a soft-shell crab. The standouts were definitely the salad and the fried rice. The Ginger Salad was fresh, flavorful, and one of my favorite dishes of the evening, though I do think the portion was a bit small for the price. The Crab Fried Rice was delicious, generously portioned, and easily shareable. The soft-shell crab on top was a nice touch. The edamame, however, missed the mark for me. It was a little overcooked and fairly bland. The menu mentions crispy garlic, but I wish it had been incorporated more as a sauce or seasoning to better distribute the flavor throughout the dish. For drinks, I ordered the Castaway, a refreshing gin cocktail that paired perfectly with dinner. My dining companion enjoyed a glass of wine followed by a skinny margarita. Both were well-made and helped kick off our concert night. Service was good overall, and our server was friendly, but we did have to ask for a few items multiple times, including a straw and the edamame. Nothing major, but it did stand out. The restaurant itself is spacious with attractive décor and beautiful views of the promenade. It's a versatile space that would work well for both date nights and larger group dinners. My only disappointment is that there isn't any bar seating, which would have been nice for those looking to grab a quick bite or drink before a show. One thing I'd love to see added is sushi. It feels like a natural fit for the menu and would give guests even more options. The prices are definitely on the steep side, but that's somewhat expected when dining inside the MGM resort. Overall, Ginger offers a pleasant atmosphere, good cocktails, and a few standout dishes that make it worth considering if you're already heading to MGM for a concert or event.

However, my opinion changed when my wife and I dined in the restaurant for the first time. It will not be our last. What drove me to dine in was the ambience I observed when I picked up a previous takeout order. It was a really nice place, with neat décor, plenty of seating, and a serving staff that was obviously attentive. This remained my impression when we came here for the first time recently. Contrary to our takeout orders, the food blew us away when it was fresh from the kitchen. Perhaps this was because we ordered different things, or perhaps because what we ordered to-go (e.g., fried eggplant, Szechuan chicken) did not travel well. Whatever the case, but this was some of the best Chinese food we have eaten in a long time. For appetizers we ordered the puffy scallion pancake, which was fun to tear and share, and came with some very nice curry sauce or dipping. We also ordered the pork soup dumplings, which were everything you could want in a soup dumpling - piping hot with a warm, soul-soothing broth inside (but which does not travel particularly well in takeout orders). For our entrees, my wife ordered the duck fried rice. I am not the biggest fan of fried rice, but this was some of the best I ever had. The duck favor was prominent but not overwhelming and the pineapple was the best integrated I have ever experienced in a savory dish. I had leftover for lunch today and it was still quite good. I ordered the fish in chili oil, a bubbling, soupy dish covered in peppers. This was phenomenal, an excellent balance of heat, numbing, and flavor. And there was plenty of fish in the dish, as well. I will be hard pressed not to order this every time we come here in the future. We split the fried green beans (solid - crisp and well spiced), which I ate for breakfast over rice with some of the leftover fish. Again, it was still good. As my previous comments imply, serving sizes are large.
