Update: To be helpful and fair... another random impromptu order... Last week dinner time: The fried rice had ZERO ZERO ZERO vegetable, pea, carrot, bean sprout and ZERO seasoning. I did find an almost dime size smear scrape of egg. I ordered and receipt said FRIED rice. I tried to salvage and add sesame oil and oyster sauce. But it went into trash inedible. I am upset because I paid extra for fried rice and received ONCE AGAIN zero flavor. I also know the ingredients that make good fried rice still expensive. But if it's on your menu it should be quality food regardless. Second, The chicken wings were supposed to be 3 drummettes and 3 wings. I received 2 awful drummettes hard and 4 hard small wings brittle enough to crack a tooth - again inedible and over fried. This makes me sad. I cant patronize any more. Hope changes can be done for good quality food!!!! We are seniors and can't digest the hard fried and I really need to be able to trust and depend upon the quality taste of my favorite meal fried rice. I think the price point is good for their food but the fried chicken tasted like it's been sitting for a while and was thrown in the fryer to be hot again. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE! So incredibly rude and disrespectful. I said "hi" THREE different times, and the lady just looked at me without even acknowledging me or saying a single word. I was there with my family, who had already been seated, but the way I was treated made me so uncomfortable that I decided to leave. Here on a warm Fall day for some variation on typical Chinese food (Malaysian) and wound up at South China in Del Ray. An unassuming store front greets you to a basic 4 walled restaurant. But again, one doesn't typically need a fancy restaurant to get great Chinese food. The difference I found between traditional Chinese and the Malaysian is more of an Indian twist on staples (more spices and some spicier options), distinct soups and the noodles. On the latter, rather than the wide egg noodles are yummy fried and chicken noodles. As for soups, you've got to try the Pan Mee (House Special). It is unique with a chicken base, mushrooms, fish balls and mustard greens. Outstanding! We also pigged out on the Sayang Meehoon, which is the aforementioned fried rice noodle adorned with plentiful tofu and shrimp in a spicy soy bean sauce. Don't say that Chinese food is boring because it's all the same. We were impressed with the variety and quality, and I suspect you will be too. read more

Some food is good, some can do better. I really like their fried chicken. I am not sure how they make it juicy and garlicy, but it's addicting. The crab ragoon and lo mein is decent, nothing standing out against other Chinese takeout restaurants. What I was disappointed on was their sesame/general tsos chicken. Some parts were juicy, and some were overcooked or too crispy. There wasn't much sauce to help either. I haven't tried other local Chinese takeout places here, but their food isn't bad. read more

Ordered pickup on a Sunday afternoon around 5PM. I had no issues with the pickup or the payment at all. We ordered off their website and were able to pickup our order easily within 20 minutes (could have been faster but we were able to choose the specific time of our order) We got the sesame beef and general tso's chicken. Both were really good. The sauce was delish and both our dishes came with some steamed broccoli which I always like to use as a sauce sponge. My beef was a bit hard to get through, but using a knife I was able to get it into smaller more manageable pieces. read more

Searching for a "pre marathon" take out meal and this spot checked all the boxes. The food was your standard take out but it was good and the owners were the nicest. You could tell that this was a beloved spot as there were several regulars that popped in while we were waiting for our order. The portions were hearty and the garlic sauce was delicious. With Chinese restaurant menus being so vast it is difficult for me to rate the businesses any higher than a 3* without having experienced enough of their menu items. On this occasion I ordered ribs, chicken wings, shrimp egg roll, beef lo mein and shrimp lo mein. The food was average. Thankfully not overly salty, greasy or soggy which is sometimes the case with traditional Chinese American food. The lady who took my order was very pleasant. I've been ordering from South China for ages. They are super quick and very affordable. The only reason I am docking a star is because their shrimp dishes are not always reliable. The quality is so-so for seafood. Everything else is great however. They are very good at accommodating severe peanut allergies! We first stumbled upon this little restaurant in the summer of 2013, after my family had just moved to America, and it's safe to say this is the place that kickstarted our love for Chinese food. We remembered the friendly service and delicious food and decided to come back here this summer. I'm happy to say not much changed even 10 years later! The restaurant looks very simple inside, but the food is wonderful. We got the beef lo mein, shrimp fried rice, egg drop soup, kung pao chicken, cashew chicken, chicken curry puffs, and lemon chicken. The prices are more than justified and portions are large and very filling, even the smaller ones from the lunch menu. The meat in all the dishes was very tender, the veggies were perfectly cooked, and the rice, noodles, and soup were delicious. South China is my go to for Asian delivery. It's one of the few restaurants in the DC area that sells Malaysian food. My son lived there for a few years, so we enjoy the curries and the char koay teow. Sadly, they don't sell nasi lemak. It's all good and delivery is fast. read more

I would hope others can separate the service they received from DoorDash / Uber Eats from this restaurant as it is nothing short of warm and homely. For fast-casual Chinese/Malaysian food, this place does the trick. The menu obviously caters to the American clientele that comprises the area. That said, the speciality Malaysian menu offers options that is reminiscent of southeast Asian cuisine. And the price is very reasonable/great value. I ordered the Penang Asian Laska (sour fish soup). The broth was nicely seasoned with tamarind which gave its sour base. The fish of choice was mackerel, which was a surprising but tasty choice for fish. I would have preferred it to be a bit more on the spicy side, however. Overall, it was a great dish with a steal price point. I will probably come back to try other dishes. read more
