    I first visited The Loft a week or two after they had done their 'soft launch'. We finished our dinner and then headed up to have a cocktail or two. We were greeted by a 'door man' who said it would be a 10 min wait this then turned in to 15- 20 minute wait. When we finally were told we could go in we made our way up the lavish stair case and saw a stunning set up! (Mind you there were only a handful of people inside - so not sure what the wait was about! ) A gorgeous bar and seating area that contains beautiful black chairs that resemble something Alice in Wonderland would be sitting on. The manager and staff are all very helpful and happy to make any recommendations or explain the menu to you. The Barman is also from Vue De Monde is Melbourne.. so that says enough in itself. The great thing is this place is not only a bar but you can order some light meals including cheese platters and dessert! We had the chocolate mousse and trifle which were both lovely accompanied by our cocktails. A nice place to go if you would like a drink but without the noise or without being pushed in to a corner. Relaxing yet stylish! I will be back again, lets hope I don't need to wait outside as long!

    I have been a Friday night regular here since shortly after it opened. I took a hiatus over summer (I don't like sharing the sunshine filled outdoor balcony with smokers!) but am back on board for winter. It's a large open space with seating options for groups or more intimate spaces for date nights. (And a pretty kick-ass tassel chandelier come booth feature) The staff are really friendly and Eddie (The Manager) always seems pleased to see their repeat customers. The wine list is great although a little pricey, entry level wines by the glass about $10-$12. Great selection of spirits and cocktails although you do pay for the quality. Attentive table service which is a really nice change in pace compared to some other "Friday night knock off" venues. Tall ceilings so it can be a little noisy when full but it adds to the atmosphere. Fun and interesting decor!

The manchego sweet-corn, however was on point. They ran out of the trout dumplings, so it was substituted with a prawn and chicken ones. They were lovely, but a tad too salty and sweet for me. We also ordered the shallot pancake which came with two dipping sauces. It was overpriced in my opinion for one typical Asian pancake, which did not justify a $5.00 pricetag. Also shared was the oysters which was beautiful. It was refreshing and tasty. Interior decor was light and bright, with pastel pinks and greys throughout. Decked with booths and casual stools, mirror ball and a ping-pong table, it doesn't strike me as a pub. It is definitely different! It is a good place to catch up for a casual drink and nibbles. Tuesday's is $4 baos so we ordered a mix of those + some pieces from the regular menu. I had the chicken, pork and royale with cheese. I wish the skin on the pork was a little more crispy, it was slightly soggy but still really delicious. The chicken was well cooked and not dry at all. The royale with cheese was a little hard but they nailed the flavours of the Big Mac for sure. The other dishes we ordered were Kimchi - so delicious we ordered a second serving Wings - not too bad, there was no spice when the schezuen (spelling) should have given it some sort of kick. Lemongrass sauce on the side was good Eggplant - full of flavor - be careful, its hot when you bite into it Edamame - a bit over salted on the top Overall we enjoyed our meal and the $4 baos are a great deal. We arrived in time for an early dinner and had a bit of luck and got seats for three right away. Like my first visit, we were at counter seats, but this time at the back, overlooking the bar instead of the kitchen. I've always been a fan of casual restaurants where you can see "the whole show." Gin Long has nothing to hide and a lot to be proud of. It's a fun watch. We started off with drinks. Like our previous visit, service was quite good, despite it being a very busy Friday. In fact, I am amazed by how popular this place has become in just a couple of months. And I am also amazed at how well they run the dining room. Greeted promptly-Check. Seated or guided to the waiting area like you're the centre of the universe-Check. Drink ordering promptly-Check. Food ordering promptly-Check. Add-ons, special requests cheerfully handled-Check. Get your tab quickly when you are ready to go-Check. Never feel rushed or pushed-Check. Take note Adelaide restauranteurs, Gin Long gives Master Classes in customer service. But service alone can't get you 5 stars. We came to eat. After perusing the menu and making a dent in our first round of drinks, we settled on: Smoked Trout Lettuce Cups and Sugar Cane Prawns (served moo shu style)--both were repeats from out first visit. We added crispy Nom Nom Barramundi and an order of Prawn Dumplings. Out of the blue, we we also given a complimentary serving of the Slow Cooked Thai Beef. Everything got split three ways, so two large serves and 3 small serves totally packed us out--not one of us could manage another bite. The Nom Nom Barramundi is one of those dishes that's as fascinating to look at as it is to eat. Crispy, juicy pieces of crumbed and fried Barramundi are piled in a deep fried, curled and cleaned Barramundi. It's a beautiful presentation, worthy of how good the fish is to eat. The lime chilli garlic dipping sauce is divine and the perfect choice for this dish. Like all the sauces we've had here, it has a little bite to it. The prawn dumplings were quite good--but the curry sauce they came with took them to the next level. It seems they have given great thought to matching all the components of each dish to maximum effect. A surprise hit for all of us was the Slow Cooked Thai Beef serving they gave us. It was so tender and flavourful and it honestly almost melted in your mouth. It's definitely on the list for our next visit and I'd recommend it for your first visit--pretty much along with everything else. I'd love to tell you about dessert, but it just wasn't possible. I tried to split one three ways, but my wife and our friend just said, "NO!" Sitting in front of the bar, we got to watch them at work. They made a special effort to entertain us by making some of our drinks on top of, rather than behind, the bar. It was quite something to watch as they prepared Pandan shooters with two floats on top of the Pandan syrup. They said they'd done some serious work trying to come up with a good combination drink to introduce the Pandan flavour to their customers. I tested it several times--they succeeded with me. Lastly, there's something unique about the atmosphere here. They call themselves a canteen and they carry the theme well with lots of casual counter seating and many big tables for large groups or several smaller groups at one table. It somehow feels like a big party at someone's house--it's all very comfortable and friendly. It's easy to catch the eye of a staff member and when they stop to see what you want, you seem to get 100% of their attention. Adelaide offers lots of choices for dining out, but I've found few as unique and satisfying as the Gin Long Canteen. I'll definitely be back and I give this eatery my highest recommendation. I only hope that they don't get spoiled by too much success! Eat, drink and be merry, but not too much! JD

Fish Head's menu focuses on more Indian, Indonesian and Malay cuisines with hint of Singaporean, the huge emphasis on the fish head curry which is also their namesake. Unfortunately, we did not sample this dish this time, to my regret as I learn that they serve it two ways; 1) with the head it all its glory and 2) fish meat only in its signature curry sauce. Never mind, another excuse to pop back in, especially as the weather is getting colder. Done away with the tea cups and saucers as light fittings, it is replaced with more sleek lighting. You cannot miss the massive mural of a fish on the right upon entering. The very low lighting might put some diners off, especially those with challenging eyesight. Staff are still learning the menu, but is super friendly, big tick there! Food ordered includes satay mix, spinach and cottage cheese, twice cooked duck and otak otak (grilled fish wrapped in banana leaf). We share the yellow rice between the two of us. Every thing was delicious, except for the spinach and cottage cheese curry. It tasted as unappetizing as it looks - refer pics. Some part of the duck was a tad dry, however, the flavours was delightful. The satays which included chicken, pork and veal served with a tasty peanut sauce was lovely, might be a little bit small for some. The banana wrapped fish was really really good. The fish was not overcooked and the sauce had a spicy tang to it. Apart from their teething problems, I believe this might become a popular destination in Chinatown.

While the name raises eyebrows, the food is pleasing and don't worry, there is only ONE dish on the menu that you can choose to have served with the fish head. Like the famous Curry Fish Head in Malaysia. That brings me to the cuisine. It's Indo-Malay-Indian. A blend of flavours from these countries that focus heavily on spices and herbs to create well balanced rich flavours. Tonight we had the Soft Shell Crab, Otakotak, Beef Naan, Crispy Pork Belly, Twice Cooked Duck and Beef Cheeks. Soft Shell Crab was crispy and well seasoned but the salad it came with was my favourite. I just wanted more and more of that tangy dressed salad. The other dishes were richer and sweeter so it was perfect for countering that and resetting the palate. All the meats were very tender, the duck and beef cheek curries both had lovely flavours. I would say the dishes here are very much on the sweet side, if they could pull that back a little the other flavours will have a chance to shine through better. I have to mention that the OtakOtak is not OtakOtak like it is in Malaysia. Instead it is a fillet of fish topped with a sambal like paste and steamed in banana leaf. If you are looking for a taste of home or authentic otakotak this is not it. Otherwise, all the other dishes were thumbs up. Lastly we made room for dessert. Mango Panacotta, Pandan Coconut Crepes and Coconut Sticky Rice served in a coconut with fresh coconut flesh and coconut ice cream. They were all delicious and fragrant. I think it offers something that the area doesn't have, probably not anywhere in the city. I wish them all the best, I personally would return.

The cashier was helpful and friendly, explaining the different dishes. I ordered Chicken Laksa and the Pork Fried Rice- and a BEER! Most of these types of places don't have beer, but Honki Tonki does! I sat down, poured my beer, and within minutes, my soup arrived- piping hot and oh so good! The broth was perfect! I love Laksa, and it's hard to find in the US. My fried rice arrived- and, my god, this was some of the best fried rice I have ever had! So tasty, and such a great mix of ingredients. Again, it's not a fancy place, but the food is so good, so much so that I came here on my last night in Adelaide! Plus, it's open until 10 PM!

The quality of the food is fairly high - around the table we had, inter alia, an array of quail eggs, laksa and teriyaki chicken. Everybody seemed happy and well fed. The lovely folks at HT also stock their own line of delicious chilli oil at $7 a jar. Bargains galore! In fact, the true satisfaction test came 20 minutes after I walked out and realised I was feeling really full. A nice feeling when you drop $15 on a meal for lunch. Happy days. I popped the top on a lovely hills dry cider so my bill was bigger ($9 for a three oaks Adel hills cider) than a regular work lunch but today just happened to be one of those "treat yoself" sort of days. Glad I did. Honki Tonki. Get amongst it.

Walk in and it's like the prohibition era, from the grungy shelves to the dark, moody decor and booths to the sad music. It is easily one of the best themed cocktail bars in Adelaide. Drinks are fantastic. Some bars have expensive drinks for not much and they don't taste great. Not at Baddog, they are top notch and the barman does it right in front of you on the bar so you don't miss a thing. Brilliant. Best find of the year for me so far.

Bad Dog Bar doesn't have tvs, doesn't have pokies and doesn't have tap beer and for goodness sakes never order an apple-tini :) and that's the way we like it. Top Tip: order the pickleback - rye bourbon shot followed by some freshly made pickle juice. The SMoking Joint cocktail is also a fav!
