I started coming here back in early June as I just moved here from Chicago. I was recommended to come here from a co-worker. I was not steered wrong. When you walk in, you are greeted warmly by both the staff and decor. Everyone is just so friendly and welcoming. Zach is my barber and is great. He gives consistent hair cuts and always is good at recommending product. I only tried one barber shop when I moved and it was this one and have been coming ever since. This is the best haircut I've had in the four years I've been living in Pittsburgh. It was super reasonably priced at $15, and they gave me a cold, beer while I sat! Cool art on the wall, good hair products and cool clothes for sale were a nice touch as well. I found the atmosphere to be exactly how they described it on the website: a place where a man who takes pride in his appearance can feel comfortable doing just that. I'll be back soon and often. I found this barber shop when I was no longer able to go to my barber (his hours couldn't work with my schedule). I was happy to see that they were open weekends, as well as until 9 on two weekdays, so for somebody working a retail job, it was a godsend. Everybody here is super friendly and laid back! They really take pride and care about creating a welcoming environment for everybody that walks in the door. You're asked if you want a free water, coffee, or beer while you wait, given a hot towel and razor shave on the back of your neck, and given a free hair wash when it's all over. I look forward to getting my hair cut every time I make my appointment. That's another great thing...you can text them to make your appointment! Just make sure you do it a while before you want to come in...they fill up pretty quickly, and for a good reason! Mister G&G is a class act. Michael clearly is on a different level than the other places I've been. I can't remember the last time I've been this pleased with a haircut, probably because it was never. He asks good questions and gives good advice, walking out I felt like a million bucks. At $15 per haircut this place is worth that and more, not to mention the free drink and very friendly service! I'm a BIG fan of this place. As I moved to Pittsburgh from New Zealand I needed to find a decent barber and was recommended this place by a friend. MJ is my barber he actually gives a shit about what you want and what you're up to in your personal life unlike some other big chain salons. Absolutely horrible recent experiences. They start by liquoring you up so you don't realize that your getting ripped of for $26 plus tip for a mediocre cut. I have Been going to this place since it opened for years and every time I went they kept loosing better and better barbers. This place is expensive so you expect a good haircut and I've had a few really bad haircuts recently when I've been expecting the same amazing cut I have been getting for years but I'm afraid this place has lost its charm and good barbers. Not only that but the staff are extensively rude and unprofessional. Couldn't believe my ears whenever the barber complained whenever I wanted it shorter on the sides and why I didn't say anything sooner. Its hard whenever you have no glasses on and you can't see in the mirror to see the progress.. I use to believe this was the best place in town and whenever I wasn't satisfied with a haircut and wanted it fixed cause they left tons of loose hairs they said they didn't want me coming back. To be honest I was upset then I remembered I should not spent $30 to go home thinking a hair cut looks bad so ill find a better barber shop that is more professional and half the price too. read more

Drove 50 minutes to try out this shop because I couldn't find any in my area that did consistent work and had a good atmosphere. All of the workers here are really friendly. The work I saw everyone doing was fantastic. Niles did my cut and he listened to what I wanted. He was also great at keeping conversation without being awkward. Slightly perplexed by the reviews here and on yelp. I got a haircut and it was below mediocre. Really nothing better than the $8 establishments in bloomfield or oakland. Now that would be fine if it were an unpretentious $8 establishment, but it isn't. Aside from the quality of the haircut. I tried to get an appointment on Thursday and they claimed they were booked all the way till Tuesday. Wow. Fine, I come on Tuesday morning and get my haircut. There were 6-7 staff here, a good half of whom didn't seem to be doing anything other than fooling around. Ok. After the mediocre haircut I asked if I could get a straight shave and I was told that no, because I didn't book it. Again, of the three male barbers one was cutting my hair and the other two hadn't been doing anything all the time I was there. UPDATE 10/12/2014. Ok, so this is really pathetic. Yesterday I received a message from a person calling themselves Regina Filangi (apparently this is a pseudonym from a show) from an account that appears to have been created just recently with no reviews or other activity. The message was basically a long and pathetic rant about my review above. I'll spare the readers all of it, just wanted to share the following sentence: "It's a shame that you, as an angry black woman (judging by all reviews you've written), decided to create a Yelp account so that you are able to take out your "the world owes me something" aggression on the unfortunate businesses you've decided to visit." I would consider giving the owners of Mister G&G the benefit of doubt and say that maybe this is some unaffiliated nut head, but the fact that the writer appears overly familiar with the shop and its operations, as well as the fact that they created an account specifically to address my review makes me believe otherwise. The worst scheduling system of any barber I've ever experienced. Unless you can make your next appointment more than 2 weeks in advance you will never get a 2nd haircut. I've been going here for 4 months and it never got better or easier. Don't waste your time falling for this place just because they offer you a free beer while you wait. It's not worth the hassle! I'd give them 6 stars if I could. I started going to Mister shortly after they opened last year and have been a loyal customer ever since. I went to try something different (I'd been seeing my previous barber for 7 years) and loved what I got: a better haircut and better atmosphere for less money. I've worked with Michael from the start but Ali and MJ are both excellent too; I see their work while I'm getting cut and am consistently impressed. Heather is also awesome and always makes me feel welcome and comfortable. At the end of the day, you can get a good haircut in a lot of places, but at Mister, you get more than that: a consistently positive all-around great experience, a few laughs and complementary coffee/water/beer. Best hair cut and shave in the city. Also a good beer before you start. I went to about 4 different barbers around the area and every time left feeling like a drunk had gone wild on me after only asking for a buzz cut. But this place they take their time. They treat everyone like VIPs and I love the way the place looks. The price is great for the hair cut you get and I ever mind leaving a good tip. Oh and make sure to call ahead they are always booked. I know the welcome walk ins but good luck getting a last minuet cut by them. read more

The reviews are correct. Appointments fill up very fast, though I called right when they opened and got on their "cancel list", ended up getting an appt that same day. As for the haircut, it was a great cut for any amount of money. When you consider that it was only $20, it was mind-blowingly good. Supercuts price, high end salon result. Included a shampoo and style too. Last, but not least, a warm towel on the neck complimented the ice cold beer better than you could imagine. You're not going to get a better value in Pittsburgh, I can assure you of that. Best practice: set your next appointment when leaving your current one. read more

This is the only time I have ever posted anything on Yelp. But I felt I had too. This is the email I just sent Mister Grooming & Goods. It should explain everything... I went in for a trim and had an appointment with Gina. She did not take her time and was not paying attention at all! I gave her instructions on how to cut my hair i.e. my hair curls as it gets longer, please cut the curls out but keep the length and make sure to trim the back shorter. She did the opposite and trimmed my bangs too short and didn't touch my sides or back. I asked her to fix it and it felt like a panic hair cut from then on. Like she was genuinely panicking trying to fix it. It felt very uncomfortable. I wasn't going to tip and in fact didn't at first. Then I felt bad and gave 15%. BTW: I Love the look of the shop and the overall experience i.e. straight edge razor, actually does beards, drinks, hot towel and massage. Gina didn't really do any of this stuff either. And left me with a lot of loose hair all over my shirt because of her last minute "fix." When it was all said and done, I got a crappy $20 haircut that I could have gotten at Supercuts. No different... except the PBR. P.S. Everyone I've asked at work says the cut doesn't look very good. "Unbalanced" with the bangs way too short is the consensus. The first time I went to Mister it was a great experience, I got a good haircut in an astoundingly short amount of time. My second experience was terrible. Michael barely paid any attention to what he was doing. When he was done he asked the obligatory "what do you think" as I stared at the worst haircut I've ever seen. The left and right side of my head are completely different. I've tried going to the barber shops that have been around for 30+ years and almost all of those guys are going through the motions. Somewhere in the middle of the 20th century we completely lost touch with the American tradition of experiencing a proper barbershop and getting our hair cut cleanly and elegantly by a professional barber. I walked into Mister on a lark because I saw a bit of an "old-timey" look. The tradition is there, but with all the nuances of a modern approach to service and delivery. Michael has been around the salon industry, and he has also apprenticed and worked as a formal barber. Mister is clearly his vision of taking the best of both old and new and delivering a 21st century customer experience. Immediately following the great conversation, the unique decor, and the fantastic haircut...something hit me right as I walked out the door...I couldnt wait to go back. Yelp has let me down before but I trusted the great reviews for Mister and I do not regret it. I've been cutting my own hair for 3 years for the simple reason that I'm usually always disappointed after paying for a haircut. I decided it's time to stop hacking at my own scalp and time to try finding someone who knows what they're doing, and boy do the people here know what's up. I was running late to my appointment (because Pittsburgh's road work is never done)so I called in and they were very nice about it and took me in around closing time. I'm writing this on behalf of my boyfriend, who has been coming here throughout the time we've been together. He always looks forward to his time at Mister, since in addition to always doing a great job they offer you an espresso or a beer with your haircut/shave and provide a welcoming and relaxed vibe. He comes home happier and refreshed with a sweet haircut that doesn't grow out terribly. Recently he changed the way he cuts his hair, and the people at Mister did a wonderful job on the new style. He's also been able to purchase the styling products they've used on him to recreate the look at home. My new place for haircuts. (I have less hair now than I do in my picture.) Friendly, efficient, always willing to suggest something but also happy to cut the way you want. Quite inexpensive too; I'm only spending a couple bucks more per cut now than when I went to SuperCuts or wherever, with an infinite increase in quality. For years I have only gotten my haircuts at Supercuts close to my work. It was convenient, inexpensive and in a comfortable environment. The hours worked with my schedule as well. After awhile I figured I could just cut my own hair, my all over buzz was impossibly simple. I purchased the Philips Headgroomer and was able to achieve the same look on my own. The haircut was free after my initial small investment although it required a lot of time, hunching over my bathroom sink, tissues covering the drain pipe. The head groomer product worked great, nothing wrong with the product. But after approximately 40 minutes I'd twisted all over trying to ensure I cut everywhere and the edging/neck area was the biggest pain of all. The end result after my haircut? Another 15 minute shower to wash it all off and cleaning the sink of any remaining hairs. Here steps in my co-worker who recommended Mister Grooming & Goods, a short drive from my apartment in Shadyside; I was interested in getting something with a little more style. I took the leap after checking out their website finding fair prices and a fun environment. I was all set for a 2:00PM Sunday appointment. I met with the associate at the front desk and ultimately Zack Dean, a super chill personable guy from Shaler who's been there about 2 years. Zack hooked me up with a super tight mid-fade up to a "2" length on top. We got along great and the experience was just exceptional. He washed my hair as well so no complete shower needed or mess to clean up for me! The prices are great, the environment was so friendly and welcoming and the end result was professional and on point.
