I really, really hate shopping at big box hardware stores. I love looking for reason to visit smaller, locally owned ones. Ace is a great place for me, and I always come here before Thanksgiving each year. Why? One word: Resharp. Resharp is an automated machine that puts an amazing edge on virtually any knife - far better than I can do with any of the stones and tools I've accluminated over the years. The service is while-you-wait fast and really inexpensive ($6.99 with a buy 5/get 1 free deal). And while the staff works on my blades I can wander around and find all the many things I completely forgot I needed. (I love hardware stores; my Spousal Unit not so much). Resharp works on almost all non-serrated knives less than 12" long, regardless of how badly beaten up the edge. ACE the not so helpful place... 'Do you rent chainsaws?' *Yes we do!* 'Good because the website says so.' Go to the cashier... *no we don't!* So one person agrees with the website and the cashier who would rather be looking at her phone than doing cashier type things says otherwise. Apart from the one hand not knowing what the other is doing. It's a good local place to pick things up. Bar red mulch. And you don't really pay much of a premium for them being small. read more

Service is everything to me and I've always gotten great service here. Selection in store is decent and you can airways order online for a bigger selection. Prices are sometimes more than Home Depot and Lowe's but I've gotten great deals at Ace and better service. read more

Ace used to be known as a great store with helpful staff who could give advice on home repairs and projects. Unfortunately, now it's staffed by teenagers who can barely be bothered to look up from their phones to ring up your purchase. They're also not good value for money. read more

They don't price match which sends me to Lowes frequently to buy things. For example, Rustoleum concrete paint here is $49.99 a gallon and it's $34.48 at Lowes. Too high a price to justify the convenient location. read more

Mt. Airy ACE Hardware has a great variety of items and very helpfull staff. Recently I had a piece of plexiglass I needed cut down, which is probably an odd request but Stephen who answered the phone was soo nice and helpful. I dropped off the plexi with dimensions I needed cut and a couple days later it was ready. I appreciate the hometown reputation and the willingness to help out. I usually go to this store for my home needs , as home depot is far from my home. I recently bought a home and I have been at this place for my needs and their service is excellent , staff will help you untill you are satisfied and got what is needed. Returns also a no problem. I am so glad Ace is here in my town. They have a lot of stuff for such a small footprint. I have rented equipment four times over the past 6 years, the price is right, it beats driving up to the Home Depot. I buy odds and ends as needed, usually spend 15% more than at the big box store, but the service makes up for the slight price difference. I've never felt more compelled to write a review (I literally just made this Yelp account solely for this). My husband and father in law visited this store because we needed a weed trimmer and this was really the only store around that had the one we wanted in stock. My father in law also had (what we thought) was a $5 off coupon. While he was purchasing some items for himself, Emily was trying to ring up the coupon but it wasn't working. No worries. She was great at trying different things like phone numbers and zip codes, but was noticeably growing irritable. We waited for a manager to help us figure out the situation since the coupon was mailed directly to my mother in law but nothing was coming up in the system. An older woman came over (didn't catch her name) and tried similar things but was also noticeably irritated with us. Then there was the epiphany moment! The older woman spoke to my father in law in the most condescending tone saying that he didn't read the fine print and the "coupon" sent in the mail was a promotion and he had to sign up for their rewards program to use the coupon. Now yes, he should've read the fine print. But the employees shouldn't have been so obviously upset with him and spoke down to him like they were scolding a toddler. I worked in customer service for years and I know what it's like to have a rough night, but it's completely unacceptable to treat customers the way we were treated. I agree with a previous review - yes, inevitably you will end up paying a little more than at a big box store, but I can always find what I'm looking for, and if I can't the people there are extremely knowledgeable & friendly. I'll take a little more out of my pocket if it saves me the headache of dealing with Home Depot / Lowes. read more
