This was my first time camping and when I tell you, this was the best experience I could ever have Miss Susan she was the sweetest person ever very informative and just made me feel comfortable There is a big swimming pool. The bathrooms are nice and clean, and there are plenty of things to do. We've met so many different people that helped us start a fire cause we didn't know how to start a fire or to keep it burning and then the store they sold everything that you could possibly may need if you forgot it at home they do sell firewood. It was nine dollars or five dollars a bundle, which I didn't think was too bad in the locals sell firewood as well. There were so many kids there and they had their dogs there and there is an opening down to the water and my dogs had a blast playing fetch in the water read more

Only had a short amount of time to visit, but this is a beautiful, easily accessible gem I "discovered" on a weekend road trip up to this area. Plenty of hiking, biking, fishing and "exploring" options, along with a busy, well used campground. Fall here must be ESPECIALLY gorgeous with all the tree-lined trails. Wish I had more time, but loved what I saw, and hope to make it back up there again soon... ENJOY!! read more

Small, but nice We stayed at the campground over Memorial Day weekend. There are only 60 spots and meant for campers on the smaller side. Spots are on the smaller side. There is a small hiking trail in the campground area. A clean shower house, plus a little office/store. Walking a short distance there is 2 playgrounds, Gaga ball pit, frisbee golf, nature center, bird viewing area. Several hiking trails are closer to the lake area. The lake area was great for fishing and checking out the wildlife. We saw turtles, fish, heron, along with many other birds on our stay. read more

Stayed here a few times this year. Must say this is one of the nicer, and easier to get into State Parks. If you're over 60, the Golden Buckeye makes it really financially attractive to stay in the state park system. Majority of all the facilities are relatively new and extremely well-maintained with plenty for the family to do. Campsites might be a little close in comparison to other places; however, it's pretty darn nice! The only thing this campground lacks is a pool. That said, there is a lake to go swimming if you desire. read more

A favorite place to just go sit and reflect! I often take a lunch and sit among the trees and listen to the birds. There are playgrounds for the kids and shelter houses to sit with families. I love this hidden gem in our rural county . read more

The office called us at 5 min after 1. check out time is 1. We totally understand RULES and would never consider being late checking out. Unfortunately there was a terrible incident where a deputy sherrif was shot and killed in Mt Gilead. The whole entire town was at a standstill and roads were ALL blocked while a huge procession brought the deputies body home. We were caught up in this and out of respect to the deputies family friends and community we paid our respects rightfully. The state park would NOT even consider this and charged an additional night. Late 35 minutes!! We talked to them on the phone to let them know. They said if we weren't there in 10 minutes we would be charged and we were. The whole town was shut down. We were back there at 1:35 and previously had the motorhome all packed up ready to go. They were very insensitive.a not make an exception and I spent alot if time on the phone to resolve the issue with the ODNR. .It was NOT about the money, it was the principle of the matter. At the same time, behind me was a couple checking in at 1;35. Check IN is 3:00.. WHY are you permitted to check in early but get charged for 35 min late? I feel we were treated very unfairly.. in NO way am I using this awful tragedy as an excuse. God bless him and his family. You would think they would make a small exception for the procession process. No, they were very rude and misunderstanding. We did get notification 2 days later that the money was refunded, but along with an email scolding us and basically said we better never do this again. Up until then it was a good experience. Our experience. Shame on them. Said I would leave a yelp review and they said they never heard of yelp. read more

Honestly this would be a 5 star review because the park is absolutely stunning but the mud on the trails was horrendous at times. It even stole shoes! I witnessed human feet prints embedded in the dirt along with saw first hand how quick a shoe could be taken off. Regardless, great fishing spot and a beautiful hike! If you're planning on going, look for the tumor tree deep on the orange trail. Looks like a spirit got trapped! I may or may not be cursed now for looking. read more

I have been coming here since I was a kid. Some of my funnest memories were made below the old dam. This year I was surprised to see that was gone and a new one in its place. It needed it, but a part of me was certainly sad to see it so different. The park seems to have come a long way in the past few years, and I am happy to see it getting so much love from the county and residents. I look forward to being back again next year on our annual road trip back home. read more

We camped here for 2 nights. The sites are really tight. It's not a bad campground. It is smaller than most. Just know if you have a big rig getting in the site can be fun as they didn't canter the sites they pour them straight to the road which makes it tougher. Spaces are small and close. read more

Mount Gilead State Park is surprisingly beautiful! And I do not mean that to belittle its size or location, but rather to highlight its quiet, unassuming charms. The longer we stayed the more we found to enjoy within the the 181 acre area which includes: old school playgrounds, picnic tables, shelters, fire rings, latrines, disk golf, RV parking, two spillway dams that create calm fishing lakes, and various wooded hiking trails. One can get a decent hike along paths that range from flat and open grass, to timber tie stairs that have naturally shifted and may pose a challenge to some. You may find mosquito repelant useful as you're never far from water. But this also means you can (and should) be on the look out for the many tiny toads crossing. read more

Mt. Gilead is a small park 181 acres most of which is the lake. When we visited the lake was not accessible. This is not a hiking park.

We are fortunate to have such a nice place nearby. The park is overall well kept and there are multiple playgrounds for the kids to enjoy. Hiking trails lead through the woods, up the hill and circle back around. There really is no destination, but it's a great way to get out for a nice walk in the woods. The lake bank offers plenty of room for fishing without ever being crowded. I do wish the 'boat' ramp was easier to access/use; loading and unloading a larger kayak by yourself is a bit tough. The lake is decent size to paddle around on. We've never stayed at the campground area, but walking back through it looks nice. Other reviews talk about it being tight, but that's how I feel about all campgrounds.. they're basically just the apartment version of real camping, and this one doesn't seem any different to me. The park doesn't stop in winter, either, offering great sledding at the dam for the kids to spend a snow day. If you're ever in the area, or if you live nearby and just haven't been, it's definitely worth checking out! read more

L just got home from my stay at Mt Gilead State Park, a place I've stayed at many times but left early this time. I called in April to make reservations . I was to no one was hired yet for the season in Mt Gilead. I called back when told to and found out all of the new full service sites were taken, so I had to settle for a electic only site. When I got there I was amazed most of the full service site were empty even the handicap sites...4 days later people moved in to the newer sites even the handicap sites,, I got courious so walked up to talk to the people parked in them.. Only one had a handicap sticker ...the others did not ... One guy hinted to me he was a bigshot in Mt Gilead and gets what he wants...... For some reason I don't think a disabled Vietnam vet who came home to say goodbye to friends and family , I have cancer the VA Hospital kept quiet about for 5 years has to park right next to the garbage and outhouses on the 4th of July so someone in power can have a handicap space with not a thing wrong with him.. Mt Gilead I am ashamed I called Mt Gilead my home for so many years ,, The space was empty 8 out of the 10 days I was there yet they wouldn't let me up grade. the place I had to park smelled like a toilet and the trash was over flowing hence the rats.... Never aagain Mt Gilead you haven't changed and I will never come back,,,,,, Thank you for you service... read more
