As a long-time and very active member of WHUUF (since before the turn-of-the-century) I'm wondering…read morewhy I've never left a review ... or paid any attention to the ones I'm seeing now. Mostly I'm wondering why the 5-star rating from David L on 2/20/17 was "not recommended" and is not shown here. Maybe it's time to update. While Covid changed everything for all of us for way longer than we expected, I think it is safe to say that WHUUF IS BACK! I experience this vibrant community as even more dynamic and open-hearted than it was BC, as we work together, old-timers & newcomers alike, to cultivate the garden we have been so generously given. Have we had our "ups & downs"? Absolutely! Have we had growing pains? You betcha! We have been here for 60+ years standing on the shoulders of our founders, enjoying the shade from trees we did not plant and drinking from wells we did not dig. And for what's it's worth ... I believe we are more Alive & Well than ever.

This place was my spiritual home for many years. Over the years we have had our ups and downs. I…read moreraised my tow older sons here and the DRE was awesome and is still awesome. Recently though, the board decided to cut back the DRE, Director of Religious Education, hours to half time basically taking away from the families at "WHUUF"Also, the recent focus has gone away from creating and maintaining our precious community to fundraising and social justice as the most important things. The board of directors and community decided to purchase a $20,000 piano and increase the pay and insurance to the Administrator instead of funding the DRE position. It was our biggest fundraising year last year and yet we had to cut our DRE hours, and yet the Choir director gets her same pay and the Administrator gets twice as much money as before. The support for families has also shifted, children are told to be quiet and are asked to leave during the children's service, events are planned without childcare and without family considerations in mind. They had an Auction fundraising auction and they planned it during a weekend late in the year when many kids were having end of year parties and graduation ceremonies and it was a BBQ complete with a hot BBQ. I have a toddler and it just is too dangerous to be around stuff like that. Also, the members, especially families, were being pressured to donate and pledge and volunteer more. That pressure was very uncomfortable. It is so sad that we have to leave this place that I hold so dear to my heart. I had many great experiences here but the current people in charge and taking over have too much power and are ruining the place. So, sad. Pros: Woodsy Campus Art shows Parking lot close in to Portland and Beaverton Covenant of Right Relations (not being upheld by very influential newcomers who have taken over and for some reason making change in a very bad direction) New Minister and Board President may improve things UU philosophy...
