Honestly, don't read too much into the 4 stars. I deducted one for lack of grass. A common problem for kennels in the East Riverside area, but not a terrible one to have. We boarded the barkiest dog that ever barked for a long weekend trip to New Orleans. It's never a great feeling to board a dog with slight behavioral issues, but the team at Mud Puppies handle our littlest Yelper with ease and grace. Truly, they weren't even phased. Another cool thing they offer is grooming. You can even come in yourself and use their bathtub for $15 a visit, which is an incredible option for all the apartment dwellers that are limited to showers. The staff is green, sure, but they are eager and know a lot for a kennel. I have no issues dropping my dog off and would recommend them for anyone with a tight budget, but standards that far exceed PetSmart. For $40 a night, it's hard to beat. read more

First, I am giving 2 stars because everyone that worked there was very nice and the facility was very clean. However, for boarding/playcare, this is basically a step up from boarding at a vet. The dogs are kenneled for the majority of the day, and are let out to play for 3-4 hours. This means that if they are at playcare from 7 am to 7 pm (a full day), they are being crated for 8-9 hours! If I wanted my dog crated for 8-9 hours, I would crate her in the comfort of my own home and hire a dog walker. When I picked my dog up, she was not happy and excited as she usually is when I pick her up from her normal playcare in San Antonio, and walked around the car anxiously the whole way home (instead of falling into a content and exhausted sleep). Also, for your first day, they charge you a $25 instead of the usual $22 to "watch" your dog, and then on top of that, an application fee. So for a day of 3 hours of play and 9 hours of kenneling - the total is $32 for your first day. What a huge rip off! I will not be returning here, and if you are expecting a true day of play for your pup, I would look elsewhere. read more

Definitely recommend this place! We were visiting Austin for a quick weekend with our 10 month boxer pup and quickly found out that although our hotel WAS pet friendly; our dog wasn't hotel friendly. Wouldn't stop barking, crying whenever we tried to leave the room; which left us in desperate need of a place to board our pup. (On a Friday afternoon no less.) Called them up, briefly explained our panic. They were quick to help, and explain their services. They even called our vet for us to get his vaccination records sent over. Good weekend hours was a plus, as was the proximity to downtown. We missed our pup throughout the short weekend, but when it came time to pick him up on Sunday, he looked well taken care of (and worn out!). (note: this review is for the full- service grooming, not the self service portion of the store) This is the first time i've owned a dog that needed regular hair cuts. So I have been shopping around town trying to find the best groomers for the price, location, and for his temperament. I am happy to say we tried Mud Puppies yesterday for the first time, and we've found my new "go to" groomers for my dog! My dog is not aggressive, but he's a shelter dog and is notorious for being wiggly during grooming appointments. Other groomers I've taken him to have had issues with cutting his face hair because of this, they're too afraid to cut his face hair in fear of nicking his eye. One groomer even said they refused to cut his face hair in the future. And with my dog, his face is what needs the grooming the most (he is a silky so has long facial hair). My dog was nervous coming into the groomers, but left with a wagging tail! I am pretty sure this was the lease stressed out he's been at the groomers or after, I am pinning his lack of stress to the fact that each dog has their own room so they're not scared watching other dogs get groomed at the same time. And the groomers had no issue cutting his face hair, evidently this was the only time he wasn't wiggly! The facility is nice and a calming environment for dogs who are scared of the groomers. The groomer walked to the front of the store and discussed with me thoroughly my idea of how I wanted to cut his hair and offered professional advice, which not every groomers does. This establishment was also cheaper than other groomers i've been too, and my dog left with an adorable home made looking christmas bow. They were on time with the appointments and everything too, super reliable. Bottom of the line: I will be back. If you want an affordable, worry-free, stress-free groomers for your dog, then this is the place for you! read more

I have 2 fur babies and most apartment complexes I have lived at here in Austin do not have any kind of doggie washing stations (that's a note for you big developers....!). My dogs are often the rebels and love to go doggy-bogging (e.g. finding the biggest, wettest, muddiest puddle of them all and rolling around in it until they are covered from head to toe in nothing but mud and completely unrecognizable). So then off to the washers they go. My favorite place is Mud Puppies because they have a dual bathtub option for the do-it-yourself wash so my boyfriend and I can each take a dog and a tub in the same room. It's fantastic. They give you a bucket with a towel to dry your pup directly after to to a pre-dry down, a larger towel to dry them off better, 2 brushes (a wire one for the hair to brush their coat before and after the bath and the other to massage them with the soap to get most of the hair off), shampoo and doggie cologne. There are also dryers at each station. The staff is super friendly and the place is clean. They are more than happy to oblige if you need extra towels, which I often do with two large pups. They have food, toys and treats you can also purchase. The only reason not for 5 stars? The wire brushes aren't that great, so I usually bring my own furminator with me to really get my pups good and de-haired. I would recommend Mud Puppies if you'd like to bathe your pups yourself. It's quick, convenient and decently priced. It usually costs $32 for both of my pups and when you consider the fact that you're not doing it in your own tub at home, it makes the price worth it. Plus, you get the doggie cologne which lasts a really long time so your pups smell so fresh and so clean, clean for a while! This is a review for their self-service dog washing stations only! It's the only service of theirs I've used, and I have used it probably about 8 times. First of all, I love their staff. Everyone is always so friendly and helpful, and they deserve five stars in my book. And I love their semi-private dog washing rooms. The tubs are raised, which is great news for my back. They provide a nice bucket of tools (shampoo, a couple of different kinds of brushes, a couple of towels, etc.) and a vinyl (I think?) apron to keep you dry while getting to work on your dirty pup. Overall, I have only two complaints. Number one is the hose. It's like a power washer. The force of the spray hurts me, so I can only imagine how it feels for my dog who is not stoked to be getting a bath in the first place. There's no setting control, so you have to carefully press the handle to get it to work at about half-force. It's kind of a pain. Number two is the shampoo they provide. This doesn't bother me nearly as much as the hose, but I think it's worth mentioning. The shampoo provided seems to be so watered down that I find I'm using a TON of it to get my ~40 lb. dog clean. I'm paying $15 for use of the room, at least provide some decent shampoo that can get the job done without using half the bottle! read more

Let me preface this review by saying I'm absolutely obsessed with my two dogs. It's ridiculously hard for me to leave them anywhere including with my own parents so hopefully my 5 star review will hold some weight now that you know that. Mudpuppies is amazing. We take our dogs there for playcare, boarding and grooming. They are well taken care and loved while we are gone. Everyone knows who they are and we always get a thorough report. The first time I tearfully left them there for a week long vacation the girl at the front was so kind and reassuring even though I was being crazy + she dotes on my yorkie, Levi, so I heart her. We are also taking our other dog, Dylan, to training classes there, which is super convenient. Lastly, they are fostering a sweet dog right now and putting him through training, which just makes me love them more! read more

With lots of furI always worry they'll take off too much or use an electric razor (leaves the hair with an unnatural frizzy texture), but Mud Puppies clearly knows what they're doing. I'd tried Kanine Klippers before (fine but overpriced and didn't seem as nice at reception), and we'd gotten her bathed only at Petco Brodie (great for the price), but Mud Puppies South is the only place I'll go from now on for her monthly groom! read more

Scheduled my appt. on 3/29/21 for a future appt. on 4/16/21 as a new customer for a dog grooming service. Provided my vet information as this was requested in order to make the appt. I received a call the day before the appt. (4/15/21) stating they would need to cancel the appt. as my dog did not have the updated Bordetella vaccine. Requested to speak with a manager, but none were available. Sadly, this company had plenty of time to call the vet office for any shot record request and could have followed back up with myself re: any concerns or shots that the dog would need for a grooming appt. read more

I took my puppy, Remy, there to get groomed for the first time (he got a bath, ear plucking, booty and nails). He came back looking so great! He was so fluffy and cute! And he smelled great! Update 3/28/14 Remy has been going to playcare for one full month now, and he loves it! He loves it. Every time that I say "mud puppies" he freaks out and starts barking because he is so excited to go. And the best part is that when I go to pick him up in the evening, he is pooped!!! My dog is very high energy, so the fact that after mud puppies playcare he sleeps the entire rest of the night is a miracle. Update 4/6/14 I cannot say enough good things about Christina. I have a very large, 90 pound German shepherd puppy. And I say puppy because although he just turned four he is absolutely ALL PUPPY. I get him groomed at least once a month due to his two coats. I take him in with a whole lot of hair. And I mean really... You can't touch him without him shedding. Mud puppies does such an incredible job every single time. And not only are they phenomenal in all their work (cut, trimmed, bathed and dried, teeth cleaned and nails cut) but they do it all in a timely manner. It takes approx 3 hours for them to finish up with my dog and they'll call hush to let me know he's ready whenever j am. And by that, they give you up to two hours time to pick up your dog before charging like $10 or something. Love it all! Staff if friendly, they do a great job with their services, the environment is clean and safe and even my puppy loves it! No complaints at all. read more

I went there and I have always had a problem with them, but things got worked out. I got my Goldendoodle a bath, they told me it would be $30 and then they tried to charge me $40 when I checked out. Last time, I had issues with them shaving my dog without my approval. To be honest, they do a good job, friendly, and I trust them, it just seems like a couple of their employees dont know what they are doing. And Mud Puppies Riverside met all my requirements. The facility is clean and staff onsite at play room. They separate big dogs from small ones. The staff is all dog lovers and working with passion. They did outstanding job. During my trip, I called them often to see how she was doing and they were kind to give me the detailed updates. They closely monitored her and they called me when she had diarrhea several times. They even took her to the vet per my request after their business hours. Thank you so much for the best service. Lucy, my black lab/great dane and I had a great 1st experience with the self-serve dog wash at Mud Puppies today that compelled me to come back to Yelp (after a couple year absence) and leave a review. I usually go to Dirty Dog for dog washes, but since Mud Puppies opened an hour earlier than DD today, I decided to give them a try after our muddy morning hike. Edward (the co-owner) was super helpful and friendly, and it cost about $19 to wash Lucy, including the small up-charge for using oatmeal shampoo. I loved the soothing music playing, and Edward gave me a bunch of treats to help Lucy feel more comfortable being washed (she isn't a fan of having water sprayed at her face). I really appreciated the extra customer service and help Edward offered us, and I think Lucy enjoyed the wash much more than she normally does. read more

Kudos to this place for putting in the work and changing my mind.... Lord knows it ain't easy. I rescued a new pup and since my sis lives close by to this location and I was headed out of town, I was desperate and used their kennel service to house the new pup for a spell. I was worried. But Chloe absolutely loved it! They treated her like a princess, staff was courteous and they even gave her a bath before I came to get here. They have improved their entrance labeling, and the front staff was polite, helpful, and genuinely happy in what they were doing. I have only brought my dog here for grooming. I've never done boarding or playcare, so this is only for grooming. My dog is kind of special and basically scared to death of everyone and everything- so I'm always nervous about bringing him somewhere to be groomed. Twice now I've left Teddy here and they have done a wonderful job. This time, the lady who groomed him (I think her name was Christine, but maybe Christina or something like that) wrote up a little report card on how he did and it was just so cute. We have left our fur-baby here twice now, most recently when we left the country for our honeymoon in Mexico. Nothing like the peace of mind knowing that she is taken care of while we were away. The staff actually cares about all of the dogs and makes special accommodations as necessary (our dog is scared of enclosed spaces so they put her in a larger play area to make her more comfortable). I went here for the self-service dog was after going to Dirty Dog on S. Lamar quite a few times. PROS cheaper ($15 vs $18 for large dog) semi-private rooms (2 baths/room w/ 1/2 door blocking off from the rest of the facility) stationary stairs (my dog gets very anxious about walking up unstable stairs) they have the big heavy duty towels to dry your dog off vs the little rags that dirty dog gives you CONS the sprayer hose only has about 6 openings and this is a high power hose, which is very uncomfortable for my dog and for me because I find it tiresome to try to only press the handle with minimal force so I don't hurt my dog. I also think it's a bit more inefficient at getting her wet and rinsing her off. The switch for the blow dryer is across the room, so you have to leave your dogs side to turn it on. read more

One of the best pup daycare and boarding facilities in Austin! We have used both locations and they are both amazing. We take all 4 of our dogs here and they love it! Our young dog comes here on a regular basis since she was a puppy. The staff are caring, friendly, and regularly work with her on her manners. We even boarded our dogs when Austin had the water shut down an few months ago. The staff took great care of our pups even while we were out town and basically unreachable. They had crates of bottled water for the pups - a true testament to how much they care about the pups in their care. This place really does deserve all the great reviews! Soooooo good. I have a five month old puppy. He has had three puppy cuts. I really wanted him to have an Asian fusion poodle cut. If you don't know what that is, look it up on Pinterest. I sent them pictures of my puppy and of the haircut I wanted. They called me back and were so nice! I talked to the stylist and she seemed to be confident she could get me there. Her name was Kera, and boy did she! I'm sure he was squirming. But he looks amazing if you want to see the before and after look through the photos my puppy's name is Finnegan. I used this place for two years. Everyone was nice they loved my dog and of course knew him by name. I left him twice for a extended stay both time he was fine but there were minor issues such as a scratch on his nose or he licked a place on his paw.
