Common guys, some giving this place 5 stars ?! Nooo way. Dry and chewy isnt the way Ribs, Pork, and Brisket should be, but that is how it is. This on a Saturday, late afternoon, and a line up to order ? Inexcusable. Flavor was decent, but everything was a chewy dry jerky, and the ribs had lots of inedible gristle tendons. Sausage was tasty tender and moist though. Red sauce has WAY too much cumin. "Mustard" sauce is light on the mustard and vinegar, but not bad if that type is you thing. I've had way better at US Chain BBQ joints, and have been blown away by the BBQ at some of the legendary Texas and KC BBQ greats. Muddy's is not a food destination, or even a "go-out-of-your-way" joint. Stop in, but only if you find yourself near Keene. Looks like they are making money, been open for many years, but the Owner / Pit Master should be ashamed of the product he is dishing out. 2 stars = "Could've been (way) better". read more

Found this place completely by accident while on a road trip, decided to double back and check it out. Super glad we did, ended up having some outrageously delicious bbq sausages and smoked brisket. They even had wild turkey and some beers available. Great service but it's mostly an outdoor/open venue so make sure you pick a nice day to go here. read more

Muddy's Pit BBQ is a seasonal roadside barbeque restaurant located in Keene, Ontario which is situated right outside Peterborough, Ontario. It's approximately a 1 hr 30 mins to 1 hr 45 mins drive from Toronto depending on traffic. Got there just before dinnertime on a Saturday and decided to go with the carnivore sampler ($14.75/pound). I got a 1.5 pounds of the carnivore sampler which is enough food for the average guy along with a side of barbeque beans ($7.00/pound) which weighed around .33 pounds. The carnivore sampler consisted of pulled pork, beef brisket, hot link sausages and pork back ribs. It's a good choice if you are looking to try out all the meats. Everything on the menu is done by the pound but keep in mind you have the option of ordering in between (i.e 1.33 or 1.75 pounds). The hot link sausage was outstanding, nicely seasoned with a great kick and smokey flavour. The beef brisket was pretty good, tender fall apart meat. Pulled pork was pretty good, fall apart meat and not dry. The pork back ribs were also pretty good, fall off the bone meat. Could have used a little bit more of a smokey flavour but overall pretty good. Really enjoyed the beans, which were creamy, tender and had a rich barbeque flavour. Really good accompanying side. If you are ever in the Peterborough area, I definitely recommend Muddy's Pit BBQ for good barbeque. It's not amazing barbeque but pretty good barbeque overall. The prices are reasonable for barbeque, keep in mind meat isn't cheap these days. They also have ample seating inside the restaurant. Damn good BBQ here. Got a tour of the smokers. This is some pricey meat. We had a table of six, and dropped almost $150. Some beers available. Sides are limited. Great food 10/10 smoked to perfection done just the way you like it. Environment 9/10 out in the country your inside a fully furnished garage and can smell your food being cooked from outside. Hi all. I'm not one to leave negative reviews but feel the need this time. We've eaten here last year and it was great. We had the carnivore sampler and it was terrific and the two of us were stuffed after eating about a 2 lb portion. Told all of our friends about Muddys. We stopped in today for the same only as a take out to have at home. Unfortunately very disappointed. Two ribs that were all bone and cartridge with hardly an ounce of meat on them. One slice of dry brisket and a sausage equally as dry. The pulled pork was more shredded than it was pulled. Not all all what we had the last visit. I understand times have been challenging but for the money having to be charged when it's mostly bone and cartilage on the ribs, I think it's time to eat more at home. Covid has been tough on all businesses and I understand that. My expectations were higher and unfortunately I'm reluctant to go back. I'm sure it's just a Covid casualty situation. Outstanding BBQ. Definitely worth the drive to the town of Keene. I recommend driving through Hastings as well. Cute little northern Ontario towns. I was on my bike. Not a ton of parking but not bad. Lots of folks parking on the street. Good size lineup. A few folks bailed out but I was hungry and it was worth the wait (15 minutes). Seemed like everyone was ordering the Sampler. I did as well and was very pleased...pulled pork, brisket, porn loin, sausage and ribs. Lots of bbq sauce at the table too, load up, its good. I had the sweet tea. I've travelled to many places in the US and have sampled a lot of barbeque. Over the years I've worked with many companies in the Dallas and Austin areas- I've had a lot of barbeque. I say this without hesitation: Muddy's brisket is the very best I have ever. Why only 4 stars? Two things- One, when I ask the cutter for slices from the fatty end and he replies, 'Sorry I can't do that, I'm supposed to serve it from the other end', it makes me sad. ;) Two- for god sake stop skimping on the sauce for takeout orders. Yes I know it costs you money to make it, but I've NEVER been asked to pay extra for sauce at an American barbeque restaurant. EVER. Stop being cheap. read more

I loved this little spot. Great meat and even has a full liquor license. Oozing w/character (but not many tables as its so small, so be ready to grab a seat at one of the picnic tables outside). By the way, if you're coming from the other (south) side of Rice Lake you'll be treated to a lovely drive through rolling hills, farms and woodlands. Great southern BBQ, we had two pounds of the carnivore sampler and a pound of beans between the two of us and it was enough food for two for lunch. It could have used more of a ratio ribs. Next time I go I will get a pound of ribs a pound of pulled pork and half pound of brisket. The sausage was good but I can have good sausage elsewhere. The ribs where my favourite. Beans where good but had a bit of an earthy flavour. I liked them my wife did not. Try a sample. I went out to the back to look at the smokers and one of the crew came out and gave me a tour, lifting up the smoker lids, explaining the process. If you want some authentic, low & slow smoked barbecue, then this is THE place! Muddy's is well worth the scenic drive in the country for great ribs, brisket and pork shoulder smoked out back over maple hard wood logs. You can get your order to go, sit on a barstool inside or at one of the roadside picnic tables. It's got the look and feel of a real southern BBQ joint but owner, Neil, uses all local meats and even grows some of the herbs and veggies for the sides out back. We recommend the pulled pork or brisket sandwich sloppy (that means topped with homemade apple-cabbage slaw) or a rack of pork back ribs. They are all tasty on their own or you can add a squirt of either Kansas City Red or Carolina Vinegar sauce. Both are house-made along with the rub. You can even pick up a bottle of the red or package of the rub along with a ball cap and t-shirt. The food was dope. I do have an issue with their food safety. Not to be a dweeb but I witnessed one of the kitchen workers drop a sausage on the floor while emptying the oven/grill and he picked it up off the floor with the same tongs he used to take the sausages off the grill and then put it on the work surface that he was working from. He subsequently threw it away, and did NOT put it with the rest of the food but they need to get their people some decent food handling education. Grungy feel is cool and all, but not at the cost of cross-contamination that could make people sick. It put me off and affected my ability to enjoy the delicious food they sold me. Btw. After hearing recommendations from four different people, we decided to check out Muddy's and went for lunch a couple of Sundays ago. It being our first time there, we ordered two samplers and some cole slaw. It was excellent - the food is sold by weight and comes wrapped in paper - the sampler brisket, pulled pork, ribs and sausage. The brisket was my favourite. This would be a great place to get take out as well. I've had authentic barbecue in Texas and Kentucky, and this definitely measured up. The atmosphere is cheerful, with NFL games on the box (looks like the proprietors are Bills fans, the poor dears) and a Pac-Man game in the corner. The restaurant is open-air and you can sit inside or out at picnic tables on a covered patio. We just managed to beat the rush, because ten minutes after we arrived, so did a convoy of about twenty five people. Obviously a popular place and rightly so. We'll go back again for sure. read more
