Mustard Kitchen is a small hipsterish shack located a few minutes walk from Kingsland's cafe scene but this is not just another cafe, Mustard Kitchen has different on the menu, it caters to the conscious consumer. Coffee is supplied by Kokako, organic fair trade caffeine which is a major draw card for me. They also have a good fridge and sell good beverages, no coke here. The juice board is impressive, made from fresh produce, with dairy free options available and jars of vegan bliss balls and cookies can be found at the counter too. They even have a Tommy & James Nice Block freezer, which is a little dangerous knowing how close that is to my house. I love the coconut ice cream. The cabinets are full of vegan, gluten free chia puddings and Bircher muesli served with fruit compotes and coconut, mean as looking pies and sandwiches, and an assortment of baked goods in vintage wooden crates. They also have a kitchen menu. When you come to pay your bill, you'll hear your total and think you were under charged, you weren't. Mustard Kitchen's prices are about 20% less of what you'll pay at say The Fridge or Shaky Isles 10 minutes in the other direction. I spotted the muesli tubs which I thought were ridiculously overpriced $7 plus for what looked like 3/4 tablespoons full of muesli - maybe it was extremely delicious but seriously stingy size for the price. The variety was ok but I've been to bakeries where there so much delicious choices it's hard to decide.

It has a very large and spacious interior, equipped with its own kid's activity corner near the entrance. There is ample space as they don't seem to get particularly busy here. There is also a nice outdoor section which is perfect on a nice day, although there is not much of a view to look at, just a busy Mt Wellington intersection. They have a large selection of sandwiches, sweets and pastries on offer, as well as many cooked options. The pies are quite nice; the good homemade kind with actual large chunks of meat inside. The coffee was ok, nothing spectacular but I'll come back here.

They have a huge range of cabinet food which all looked quite appetising, however we chose from the wall menu - I got French toast with a hash brown on the side and my mum got scrambled eggs on toast. I mostly enjoyed my meal - liked how they had pre-drizzled maple syrup on my pieces of toast, as often I find that I have the problem of running out before I'm finished. The hash brown was clearly just one out of a packet though, and was quite greasy so I sort of wished I didn't get it in the end. We sat outside on the deck, where I guess you could say we car-watched at the busy Lunn Ave/ Abbotts Way intersection for the duration of our meal (despite the nice openness of the deck, there isn't really anything else to look at). Not sure if I'm super keen to come back here, but it definitely fills the gap in the market of brunch outlets in that area.

Verrans Espresso and Food is the only cafe on this corner. I arrived right around lunch time, and there were a handful of other cafe guests but not what you would call packed. I ordered an Iced Coffee and a Melting Moment cookie; which arrived within less than 10 minutes of my ordering- a smooth rich iced coffee was refreshing and revitalizing, and my melting moment had a kick to it, and was inner iced with passion fruit- delish! I had a scan of the counter food, which had laid out panini's, sandwiches, slices, cakes, quiches and pies to reheat if needed; and there is also a menu with traditional favorites also. They have lovely kind service. You have lots of seating provided, out the front ,inside on tables or couches, in the middle dining lounge or even out the back on a wooden deck overlooking Birkdale. All very cute and homely, I noticed there was not much noise other than, conversations or a passing car.

Loved the interior- like a house with a comfy looking couch in the front corner and small steps up to a slightly raised level with lots of tables and chairs. Cool colourful stained glass windows at the front and short staircase down and around to the outside for bathrooms. Loved their shelf with colourful tea cups and magazines along the banister. Very casual, homely feel. Definitely worth a look in.

Well have been there several times now and yes the coffee is good, so is the baking their savory scones fresh out of the oven at 715am. there is no cooked food menu, but the homemade pies and roll and sandwich selection is well worth a visit. It has become a favorite for my morning coffee and the paper sit in the window and watch all the workers head off to another day in the dream factory

They offer a few sweets and a luscious selection of pies including pork & apple cider, red wine beef & bacon, creamy chicken & leek and classic mince & cheese. I had the pork and cider which hit the spot after a night of a few too many cocktails! Beautiful flaky crust and a generous flavoursome filling. Will have to go back to try their coffee but am certainly jealous of the owairaka residents to have this as place as one of their locals.

The $5 bacon butty on ciabatta bread is fantastic, for example, and is the perfect way to start your day. A kids menu is available at Crate, and is basically the adult options only smaller adn cheaper. This is good to keep in mind - not only for youngsters, but for yourself! If you're not overly hungry, don't panic about trying to finish an adult meal - just get the kids one. My friend had the kid's 'big breakfast' and found it to be the perfect size. And with it being much cheaper, it's definitely worth remembering! Crate also offer freshly scooped ice-creams, with a great range of flavours and toppings available to mix and match. I was really impressed by the crumbled brownie they offer as a topping - how good would that be with vanilla ice cream and chocolate sauce. - YUM. The downside was it was a unseasonably cold morning, and because they had put furniture out where the doors would shut, there was no closing it off from the elements - yikes. They did have blankets on some chairs, but still not enough to take the chill off. Some powerful heaters would have been appreciated. The food was simply not good. They were big portions, but the omelette was bland and blah - I probably ate only half of it - and the egg benedict was much the same. The old 'eggs so poached they're hard' problem. I would gladly have taken less food if it meant increased quality. The coffee was alright - in actual fact, much better than the food - but the chai latte was like wam milk with a slight cinnamon flavour The sole staff member was nice enough, but seemed pretty frazzled and could have done with another person to allow her to come and take our orders at the table, etc it was cheap, and I can see how it would be an appealing spot for a breakfast out with kids, but I wonder if it'd be worth them hiking the prices and producing higher quality food, when there are so many other cafes around the suburb providing much, much better.
