We just happened upon this exquisite restaurant while taking in the sights of Siena and we feel very lucky that we did! This is some of the best food we've had in Italy and the presentation and service was second to none! Prices were reasonable considering the high end nature of everything about this place. It definitely has a gourmet flare, so don't come looking for lasagna or spaghetti with meatballs here. The food was impeccable!

This is an exceptional place in Siena! The service is attentive and friendly, the food is not only beautiful to look at, it is as close to perfection as you can get! Upon being seated we were given a cacio e Pepe maracron; OMG! It was so good! Then we got a bread plate and grissini with a great olive oil for dipping. We started with the Sole appetizer to share. That may have been my favorite of the evening. It was so delicate in presentation and flavor. I then had the Pici with pork ragu which was fantastic! My husband had the Fiorantina steak. Wow! That is a treat not to be missed. I then had the Monkfish which also was fantastic. Maybe a touch more salt would have made it even better. We split the dessert that was a dark chocolate with artichokes and a crumble. Yes, artichokes. It was good! They then brought out a lovely plate of tiny desserts and a shot of Limoncello. Truly the perfect evening for our first night in Italy.

Our server told us that this previously a cave. How often do you get to dine in a cave? The inside of the restaurant is of this stone like space. We were immediately captivated. While it does not currently have a Michelin rating, we were told it previously had a Micheline rating. The atmosphere is that of a cave...cool, a little damp, and intimate. San Guiseppe has wine cellar, according to staff, date back. We felt totally and complete immersed in history and that was only the building. centuries of Sienese life. The cuisine honors Tuscan tradition while elevating it through precision and care. Each dish showcases excellent ingredients and confident execution, embracing regional flavors rather than reinventing them. San Guissppe feature traditional dishes such as handmade pasta, rich sauces, and tenders meats showcasing distinct flavors with bold seasoning. We order lasaguna and cheese salad...absolutely superb! Our servers were superior...waiting on you hand and foot. You did not ask for anything as it was already there. Our server, Marco, was kind, humorous and knowledgeable. Since it was our first time to the restaurant he was super patient and informative regarding menu items. La Taverna di San Giuseppe has s long-term Michelin recognition for a reason...superior food and excellent service in a very unique space. We savored every bite and sip we consumed in San Giuseppe. When we are in Tuscany again, we will make a beeline for this restaurant.

We ended up here by mistake (confused it with another spot), and unfortunately it didn't live up to expectations. The restaurant fills up with reservations for two seatings, and from the moment we sat down the pace felt rushed. We ordered drinks and a starter while deciding on the rest, but multiple staff members kept coming by trying to take our full order. It felt like they were pushing to move things along quickly. There were a couple positives. The chicken livers to start were quite tasty and something we didn't see often on other menus. The primi were underwhelming. The pasta didn't taste fresh like many other trattorias in Siena, and the dishes overall were just average. The lasagna in particular was mushy, and the sauces didn't stand out. The secondi were slightly better -- pork ribs, Barolo-braised beef, and a "small chicken" -- but still nothing that justified the higher prices. They do have an underground wine cellar built into a cave, which is interesting to see, but there are other places in Siena with much larger and more impressive cellar spaces. Also worth noting, they add a "10% tax" charge rather than the typical €2 coperto per person. Overall, a rushed and fairly mediocre meal at a higher price point. With so many better places to eat in Siena, this is one I'd skip.

It was a Saturday night in Siena and we had been site seeing all day and did not make reservations. We tried getting into places we read about on yelp but were told they were full for the night. Really? We showed up anyway, It was after 9Pm, and I could see empty tables as they were letting in other couples. Still full we were told with attitude. So we wandered around. The Dutch guy looked down a street and said there was a place that looked brightly lighted: La Vecchia Taverna. We were invited with opened arms, outside seating only available, which was fine with us. We were hungry and it had been at least an hour since our last glass of wine. The wine we selected (Caeles) at the recommendation of our server (Luciano) was delicious, as was the second bottle. The mixed salad was fresh and delicious, the bruschetta astonishing. For a main course I had the boar bolognese and my wife and the Dutch guy both had the cacio e Pepe (salt & pepper) pasta. Both dishes were perfecto and I would highly recommend both to any travelers. For dessert we had the pistachio cheesecake and of course a finish cordial of limoncello. Luciano was so gracious, professional, charming and lovable. La Vecchia Taverna is a must-- this brightly lit bulb among the dim of others more reviews.
