I had the Florentine porterhouse, and overall it was a good cut of meat. The strip loin side was a little chewy, but the filet side was very tender. We were seated in the lowest part of the building, which had a unique, almost dungeon-like atmosphere. It was interesting and memorable, but also felt a bit claustrophobic and musty. This was probably our most expensive meal in Italy. The wine was nearly double what we paid in the countryside or in Genoa, and most items felt overpriced compared with other areas of Tuscany. That said, this is a heavy tourist area, so that was not entirely surprising. The steak was good, and the pasta carbonara was really good. Overall, I enjoyed the meal, but I personally preferred dining in the countryside or in less touristy areas, where the atmosphere felt more relaxed and the value was better. read more

This is a beautiful, romantic restaurant in an Etruscan cave in Siena. It's so elegant and makes you feel like you are somewhere special - and you are. We were here during truffle season and it did not disappoint. My husband got the truffle pasta and I got the risotto and both were spectacular. Very generous truffle portion. Other than the fact you're in a cool looking cave, This place is touristy and treats Americans as if we all expect Italy to be like The Olive Garden. (Which we know there are stupid Americans who do think this) everyone who was from a Europe speaking country got special aperitifs "courtesy of the chef", while "us Americans" only got the bread. And they were very ok. Our server was anything but friendly. She did give us good pasta recommendations: egg taglioni pasta with truffles & risotto. But that's it. Take that and the Chianti and savor it.. RUN!! (Well, don't run.. it's Sienna and it's hilly.)The scallops were chewy and the rack of lamb was over cooked and gamey. We were rushed to decide on our dishes after waiting a half hour to be asked what we wanted. Our server forgot we ordered a second dish, (what!? It's Italy!! Of course we ordered a second!!) the rack of lamb.... Maybe that's why it was over cooked?? She could tell we didn't like our lamb and basically suggested we leave. So we did. (We also never complained. Thought that was their style of cooking and we just didn't like it) but why stay somewhere where it's very OK?? In conclusion..... Do not recommend. There's soooooo many other places to get amazing pasta and service. This isn't normal for Italy. This is our second trip and first negative review for a restaurant. read more

Biggest disappointment in our family Italy trip. The scallops appetizer consisted mostly of salt with some scallop flavoring. The florentine steak on the other hand had no salt whatsoever. Perhaps there is a salt limit per table and it didn't matter how the salt was distributed. In addition, the steak had NO crust, hard to chew, and was full of gristle and silver skin. We got both reds by the glass. The montalcino was good, but the Chianti could only be loved by Hannibal Lecter downing fava beans. Waitress wasn't particularly rude but just didn't seem to know the food and wine on the menu. And when I asked for the check, it took her 15 min to tell me that I have to go upstairs to pay by card. The atmosphere is elegant, yet not stuffy. Romantic, with warm lighting, beautiful vaulted ceilings of the Etruscan period, beautiful place settings, and superb service - and all at prices we thought were very reasonable for the quality of the experience and the food. Everything we had (food and wine) were unique and not the traditional dishes, or were modern, gourmet twists on them, if so. The pecorino souffle was fantastic and unlike anything we'd ever had. The wild boar pappardelle was amongst the best I've had (and it's a fav dish when in the region so have had many versions of it). All the dishes everyone got, including the desserts, were drool-worthy. The presentations were beautiful - some downright artful. And the staff knows how to serve dine dining in a way that is not only proper service but convivial and very welcoming. One of the best restaurants we've visited on our many trips to Italy over the years! Definitely recommend a reservation during peak seasons or evenings. read more

One thing saved this place from being a 3 star experience and that was their 5 star pappardelle ragu dish. Nestled in Siena and supposedly quite a nice place, it left me somewhat unsatisfied. For one, the air conditioner wasn't on so it felt a bit stuffy. Second, the wait staff were Filipino which I found odd at an old school Italian place. The place itself is beautiful. Old school. Brick, cave like. Sorta like San Giuseppe. So why would random Filipinos he serving us? Not to hate against Asians but I would have expected Italians to be serving us. And they weren't even that nice to begin with. Third and most important, the food was just okay. Pastas were good. The pappardelle with ragu was amazing. Saving grace. Meat entree's were nothing to die for. Do not get the filo dough pastry puff with stuffed vegetables. This thing was garbage. Absolute garbage. Heavenly! My husband and I returned for our 10th wedding anniversary. The staff were lovely and made our lunch very special. The risotto is perfect (although I wish they still brought it out in a huge cheese wheel), the octopus starter was delicious, and the lamb was absolutely tender. If you can reserve a table in one of the lower levels, the temperature is comfortable when it's warm outside. This restaurant is deservedly on every list of the best restaurants in Siena. My husband and I strolled in for lunch at 1:30 pm on a Monday after a tedious climb up the Torre del Mangia (City Tower). This was a recommended restaurant in Rick Steve's Italy 2013 guidebook, a 5-7 minute walk away from Il Campo. The restaurant is situated in a well-lit Etruscan tomb, an intimate setting. Best meal we have had in Italy. The pastry with duck appetizer was great. Just the right amount of flavor. The truffle risotto was also amazing. We had the same dish at another restaurant in Siena the night before, and found the one here to be better. We finished our meal with the Florentine steak. Done just how I like it (rare by American standards). Needed to add pepper to it though to give it some needed seasoning. Not the best steak I've had, but certainly not bad. Probably would order a different entree if I were to go back though. Even though the steak wasn't 5 stars worthy, the first two dishes most definitely were. I found this restaurant on yelp while staying on vacation in Siena with my wife and sister and brother in law. What an amazing find! You must check this place out. Inside it's a very cool place with multiple levels and a very old cave area with small areas for private tables. We had a really nice table (thanks staff)! Service was excellent, food was fantastic. I had the Porchetta and my wife had the lobster pasta dish. Desserts were super good. I've been to Siena several times and dined in many restaurants and in my opinion this is one of the best! The food for such an expensive restaurant was mediocre at best. When we sat down the server asked if anyone had allergies. We told her yes there was a nut allergy at the table. We proceeded to order the flan. When it arrived at the table we noticed it had tree nuts. The server was unapologetic and said it was on the menu that it had nuts. Read the description no nuts mentioned. Then it had a small number next to it. Yes the number was for nut allergies but never looked because the waiter did not mention it after knowing we of the allergy. The rest of the food was unimpressive save your money and go somewhere else. The severs seemed to be rushing us and not very helpful describing food. It is a beautiful building feels like you are in a cave. There was a strong citrus smell, like a cleaning detergent was being used. I would say hands down - that this was not only the best meal we had in Italy over 2 weeks but all the best value. Thank you tripadvisor reviewers for helping us to find this. We made a res the day before and had to do dinner about 7:30 b/c they were booked up. I'm so glad we got to eat here. The setting is incredibly romantic in an old home thats been converted into a restaurant. The table we had placed me on top of the "well" - You'll understand what I mean when you go. And the staff was super friendly. We decided to tell them what we were in the mood for and they pointed out what we MUST try. They did great wine pairings as well. The night we were there was the Italy v. Spain eurocup finals so everyone - including my husband- made many trips to the manager's area to see what was happening. I felt like it added a bit of extra fun to an otherwise charming place. The waiters kept dropping by our table to let us know the score. Now the food- This isn't your standard italian osteria. If this place raised its price point by about 50% and added some more truffle - it could easily be a Michelin contender. They're creative, have great service and everything I had there was new to me. By that I mean it was food made in a way I hadn't seen. For instance- highly rec the risotto. They serve it to you tableside out of a Parmesan rind. And when they do everyone who didn't order that suddenly has a bit of order envy. And its delicious with squash blossoms and veggies. For our entrees we had the lasagna and the pork. The lasagna was like nothing I'd seen in Italy. It looked kinda like the ratatouille that Remy serves to the food critic at the end of the movie. Just delicious. My husband had the pork dish which was recommended as the house specialty. So, I don't even like pork that much and this was the best that I'd ever tasted. I would have been very happy if that had been my dish. And of course the dessert. Probably my favorite dessert in Italy (other that Il Procopio gelato in Firenze). The cafe creme brulee was an innovation take on a classic. It was a coffee mousse in the shape of creme brulee with a sugar dome over it. When you do into the coffee mousse - in the center you find a surprise of vanilla creme brulee. And on top of that they brought out a bunch of fun free courses. We started with a chilled tomato soup. They they brought out mini berry panna cottas for each of us. And they a spread of cookies and truffles. And the best part was - with wine the meal that left us so satisfied was about 75 euro. We thought this was a steal relative to the quality of food we devoured. I will note that there were many tourists in there. That said- there are tourist traps like the Piazza Navona and then there are places that serve high quality food where tourists who want a nice dining experience go. This is definitely the latter. If in Siena, a must try. Ordered a variety of plates from pasta with truffles (absolutely divine) to the steak florentine which was the best piece of meat ever. The restaurant is quaint, romantic and exceptionally beautiful inside as it is cavern-like and decorated exceptionally. The wine list is a great selection of local Tuscan wines to meet all budgets. Can you say TRUFFLE? I think they serve it in the water even. Truffles everywhere you look and plenty of it. Tucked away location next to the duomo in a very old building. Had a great risotto with zucchini flowers. They serve it in a wheel of romano cheese and dish it onto your plate from there. I also got the steak tartare covered in truffles which was incredibly rich and decadent. I've never had a steak tartare like that one. What really knocked my socks off is the Tuscan tripe soup. It was FANTASTIC! it's more like a stew, very hearty and wonderful. Incredible taste and the tripe was cooked so it melted in your mouth. You have to try it and don't let the tripe thing scare you off. You'd never know what it was other than tasty! They add a bread charge and service of 10% which is one thing to note, but it was a very good meal and among the best i've had in Italy. read more

Decor: think ancient cave meets Picasso-style Virgin Mary painting. The staff was extremely accommodating and friendly to Americans, but more importantly the food was incredible! I knew Siena was famous for its dried meats, but the prosciutto was the best I have had anywhere. I had the suckling pig with apple, which came with a bacon-flavored compote and was lovely. I first visited this place several years ago while on a family vacation, and we loved our dinner so much we went back for lunch the following day! I visited again a few weeks ago and it still deserves 5 stars. The setting is beautiful, historic, and unique... think Etruscan walls and cute romantic corners with small tables. Definitely make a reservation in advance, even if it's just a day or 2 ahead. The staff speaks English and responds to email requests quickly. The food is AMAZING, some of the best I've had in my entire life. Their meat lasagna melts in your mouth and they are very generous with their use of truffles on plates (last time I was there, they had a whole truffle menu!) All in all, the price is very good for the quality of the food and atmosphere of the restaurant. This is the kind of place that deserves a Michelin star! read more

We found this place based on recommendations from the B&B we are staying at. They made reservations for us as we were told this place gets busy. It is a beautiful place. Very charming. Food was great as well. That is where it ends. The waiter took our order and we never saw him again. Not once did he come by to check on us. In fact, we felt like the red headed American step child in this place. We were completely ignored. We get long Italian dinners, but when 2 separate tables next to you come after and finish before you, you start to get peeved! I actually had to wave down the bus girl and ask where our meal was (nicely of course). The icing on the cake was our bill. We have spent 2 weeks in Italy and not once did we feel taken advantage of until now. On our bill, there was a cover charge (which we are accustom to) but received an additional 10% charge on top. We asked the bus girl (since again no waiter ever came back) and she took it off our bill. No apology. No mention as to why the Americans were charged the lovely 10%. Our high end Casanova Di Neri Brunello was sloshed into glasses without any thought of a decanter. Food was average at best.. Risotto was salty and prepared table side in two week old, hollowed out cheese round. Rolled pork was flavorless, while Boar with Cherry Sauce was literally smothered in cherry sauce. While I think this was a good dinner overall, I was expecting more. Went with our friends that were staying in Siena. This was our last night in the area. We were seated promptly in the cavernous dining room. Very cool setting, but damn it was warm! Service was friendly but terribly accustomed to tourists as there was little personal feel or passion for what they were doing. The wine list is extensive but pricey. There are good values if you are willing to spend $50+ euros a bottle. Started off with their famous risotto served out of a pecorino wheel. Creamy cheesy goodness came out of that wheel. Touched with zucchini made an amazing starter. Had to try a florentine steak as we had not had one the whole trip. The steak came out perfectly charred but lacking in flavor, and the meat was a bit too done for my tastes. Overall, I would rate this good. I would also consider giving it another chance but I am afraid that I would again be underwhelmed. Think our bill was about 90 euros which included splitting a bottle of wine amongst the four of us. Da Divo serves "Haute-Tuscan" Cuisine in an intriguing restaurant space very close to the Duomo in Siena. This is an interesting value proposition, and likely a welcome one. Siena has many "traditional" Tuscan restaurants, catering to all budgets, and tastes. We've tried most of them within the walls of the old city. However, by pushing the culinary boundaries of the regional cuisine, Da Divo offers something distinctive. What they do, they do very well. The food is fresh and the dishes imaginative twists on Tuscan traditions. They're expertly prepared and well presented. The restaurant itself is a very interesting setting, another Sienese example of how even old garbage can become modern treasures. The ground (i.e., top) floor of the restaurant was, literally, the site of Siena's mediaeval garbage dump. The old stone façade is still visible in the outer wall. Down below, however, the dining room winds into the tufa, and select tables are places within grottos in the tufa carved during Etruscan times. This is just so cool, and very romantic. lastly, the artwork in the restaurant is modern, adding to the sense of distinctiveness. We've dined at Da Divo twice. We appreciated it for what it is. However, I'd mention a few other things too: --This is not really a restaurant for kids, unlike virtually every other Tuscan restaurant we've been to. Just be aware of this. The elegance of Tuscan food is how remarkable something so straightforward can be cooked to perfection. By elevating the cuisine to the "frou-frou" level, you provide welcome variety for discerning diners, but make it harder to satisfy gli bambini. We took our son there twice. He's not a picky eater, but when we asked for some slight simplified variations on the dishes, they were less than accommodating. This also is unusual in Tuscan restaurants. --They've gotten very popular, which makes me glad. However, one result is that they've start to push diners a bit, as if table turns matter more to them. Understandable (a common occurrence in most fashionable U.S. restaurants) but a little bit of a jolt if you've gotten acclimated to the usual Italian pace of dining. --The grottos are romantic, so if you want one for your candlelit proposal dinner with your favorite squeeze, make a reservation well in advance, and be explicit you want one of the grottos. read more
