Osteria Nonna Gina was awesome -- one of those places where you walk out with everyone saying they could eat there every night. The atmosphere was relaxed, the staff were friendly, and everything just felt easy and comfortable. Prices were fair and the overall experience was perfect. We had pici, pappardelle, grilled sausage, meatballs, and a massive 1.1 kg steak that was cooked to perfection. Everything was delicious. The house wine was €13 for a liter jug - my kind of place. For dessert we had panna cotta and affogato -- both excellent. We also tried the bacio di lella, which was ok -- kind of like a Klondike bar. And then to top it off, an older nonno came to our table at the end with large containers of chocolates for us. A really memorable and fun touch. Perfect meal all around. read more

We've been coming to Nonna Gina's on every trip to Siena since 2014 and it's still the same. The menu is handwritten, the pasta is fresh and the prices are reasonable. It's now very very popular, so make sure you book. They also have a nice selection of wine including half bottles. Definitely worth at least one visit on your trip to Siena. read more

We found this restaurant from Yelp reviews and were very happy with our meal. The menu was written in cursive, in Italian, so we relied on the waiter to help us. DH started with the gnocchi that so many reviews mentioned. He said they were excellent. He also had a half bottle of Brunello di Montalcino for only 23 Euros. We shared the green salad. We also shared a small grilled beef steak that was sliced into strips and covered with arugula that wilted perfectly with the steak juices. I squeezed lemon juice over the arugula and steak and had a great meal. The steak's flavor was something new for me, and I do love steak. It was an unusual hearty flavor. We were full so did not have dessert. We were given a complimentary digestive, amaretto or grappa, to complete our meal. I would definitely recommend dining here while in Siena. read more

Wonderful little restaurant with amazing food! We stopped in for lunch and I wish we were staying in Siena longer so that we could have returned. I had the gnocchi that others have raved about and they were delightful! Filled with creamy cheese and a sauce that is simply delicious, my husband had the rigatoni with meat sauce and that too was delicious. We enjoyed the house white wine, both inexpensive but very tasty and finished it off with cappuccinos and dessert. Their Tiramisu is definitely worth the calories! This is a restaurant frequented by Italians, with the menu in hand written Italian, but the waiters were very nice and we managed to communicate very well. read more

Yesterday we went to a place recomended by the ricks steve. Maybe it was an off night but the food was ok, service hit or miss and the ambiance was loud Americans from the south no less and a long walk back to our hotel. After a long day on our feet sightseeing I wanted something nearby. On our way back to our hotel I saw this place and looked it up on yelp. Bingo 4 1/2 stars. Once again the yelp community to the rescue. It's why I love this app and bother to review almost everything. This trip while in Sicily I had to add almost every place I ate but it's worth paying back for nights like tonight. This place was full of local Italians out for a meal. The ambiance is really cool like your Italian aunts house with interesting works of art, pictures, bottles of wine. Just cool. He menu is in italian but the staff speaks English's so whatever you want to know they can explain. They have a nice written wine list an some pretty good cheap house wines. I was in the mood for some good stuff so got a rosso de monticialno for 18 euros. This this little brother of brunello de monticiano but still an excellent wine. The bruschetta were amazing, the gnocchi where by far the best I have ever had, fluffy and light with a cheese center in a an awesome sauce. Just incredible. My wife had a carbonara and raves about it. We had no room for desert but they look amazing. They then bring a couple of bottles for after diner drinks in the house amaretto and grappa. Can it get any better? Great food good service nice experience. After last night I was thinking of Siena a whole different way than I tonight. All thanks to the yelp community. read more

This place has a lot of charm and they have their own handmade menus. They have decorated the place with postcards and pictures from different parts of the world. The ambiance was intimate and cozy. Now, on to the food... The penne pasta was good with a tinge of heat to it. The gnocchi had a mozzarella filling and it tasted great. They had us try the amaretto and grappa for free. If you come to Sienna, this is a must try. One of the most authentic Tuscan restaurants my wife and I found. Amazing customer service, no rush, and the food was fantastic. The gnocchi was absolutely amazing and I don't think I'll ever find anything like it again. From the bread, to the olive oil, to the dessert. I would have ate here all 3 nights if I had tried this place on my first night. Try to come early if possible because there was a wait when We arrived. Visited this wonderful restaurant several years ago on my honeymoon; somehow just got reminded of it. I still have never had better gnocchi in my life. This is the standard that no other Italian restaurant I've been to in the world has been able to match. To give you an idea as to how much I loved it, my wife and I walked about 45 mins to an hour from our hotel to the restaurant (pre-Uber; extremely high vehicle taxes in city centers)...two nights in a row! I don't remember specifically what else we had, but everything we did have was good. The restaurant itself had a great atmosphere with very friendly staff and is family-owned and operated; I think the woman who took our order was Gina's granddaughter. We were in Sienna for one night so we knew we needed to make our dinner count for something. After reading a few reviews, I landed on Osteria Nonna Gina. We accidentally walked over a touch earlier than they opened so we grabbed a glass of wine up the hill. After a half hour, the place was already getting busy with many of the front room tables filling up. The space reminds you of sitting at an elderly relative's home. There is a hodgepodge of tables set up with family photos and images all over the walls. The lighting is sparse and the decor could use an update, but that is all part of the charm. The menu is hand written which makes picking a dish slightly difficult for someone who does not know Italian. All I know is that I wanted the gnocchi that everyone seems to be raving about. We grabbed a bottle of wine and ordered our dishes. It did not take long to arrive at our table. I was shocked at how large the gnocchi were (I am use to seeing tiny little guys in american restaurants). The were soft, pillowy and melt in your mouth good. The shining star of my plate was that creamy delicious sauce. My god, if i could have it in a bowl for soup, I would have it and to hell with the cholesterol and my health. I am fairly certain that I did not lick my plate but I did use every bit of bread to deliver it to my mouth. To wrap up the dinner, we got some espresso and a creme brûle. Also delicious but the real dessert came as we asked for the bill. They dropped 2 bottles on the table. One tasted like actual death in a shot glass (that ish was STRONG). The amaretto was very soothing and nice as a post meal drink. If you had to go somewhere for dinner on your single night in Sienna, then I recommend this joint. My family and I ate dinner here last night. The family consists of two children both under 2 years of age, the mother and father and myself the proud grandfather. The staff was very welcoming and took the time to swoon over the kids. The cook even came out to play with the kids. A very family friendly restaurant. Now for the food. The food and drink's were excellent. I started with a insalad mista which was good with lots of fresh veggies, then I had the thick spaghetti with pesto and it was very excellent, with a side plate of spinach. This is a must do for anyone going to Siena! My pal and I went here before it opened and there were people waiting outside already, which was a good sign! We were seated and then began our trip through Italian food: My friend had the gnocchi which was to die for, and I had spaghetti, then the slow cooked blackened chicken--to die for!! Top that off with some house wine and I literally couldn't get enough over how good the food was! I wish we had more time in Siena because I would've eaten her all day, every day. ATTITUDE! We walked in and were ignored for 10 minutes without even a nod. So we stood there feeling very uncomfortable while two guys cruised around the room kissing the "hands" of the very Anglo tourists believing they were having an authentic Tuscan experience. When the guy finally acknowledged our presence, I asked if we could have one of the several empty tables for two. He asked if we had reservations. I said no. He rolled his eyes and offered a table in the basement. We walked out. This is not a "locals" place. They speak perfect English, so it's full of English speaking tourists - at 7:30pm - paying too much for average pasta and cheap wine. The locals don't even think about dinner until at least 8pm and they don't eat here. Walk a couple of blocks and look for a locals place. We were staying down the street at Piazza Paradiso and the owner suggested Nonna Gina as we finally made our way out for dinner. If not for the recommendation we likely would have missed it. I'm sure glad we didn't. We had kind of a late start by heading to dinner at 8:30 which was more in line with when the Italians eat. We walked into a packed restaurant as a result. It seemed like all eyes were on us as we jammed into the small entry, but we were quickly led into the back of the restaurant and seated immediately. We know a little Italian and they knew a little English and so there were a lot of smiles and nods but we felt like we were regulars. The hotel manager suggested the gnocchi and we all ordered that except for my nephew who ordered rabbit. The gnocchi was incredible but I was a little envious of my nephew as he raved about his dish. The bruschetta was amazing as well. You can never go wrong with house wine in Italy and this was no exception.The complementary Amaretto and Grappa was unexpected and appreciated. My nephew and I developed our taste for the Grappa while the ladies sipped the Amaretto. By the time we left we were feeling pretty good and I slept like a baby that night, turning the corner on the insomnia that normally accompanies my jet lag. read more

This restaurant serves authentic Italian food. It appears to be family operated. The young man who presumably is the son of the owners was either having a bad day or didn't much care for Americans. He had attitude, messed up our order and barely checked in on us. But this was made up by whom I assume to be the patriarch of the family, who was attentive, friendly, and has old-world Italian charm. We had the bruschetta which was by far the best we've had in several Italian cities and a pesto ragu pasta that was incredible. Their tiramisu was creamy and delicious and the complimentary Amaretto and Grappa was a nice touch. If you don't get reservations, recommend you go at lunch time when they open. Italians eat later than Americans so you'll have plenty of tables - even for a family of 5. read more

The food was descent but the service is terrible. We asked for the check five times because we had a train to catch and he never brought the check. We ended up leaving money on the table and as we walked out our waiter was at the front of the restaurant taking orders, clearly not caring about the restricted schedule that we mentioned five times. We had bruschetta for an appetizer--lots of yummy oil, salt, pepper, cheese and tomato--and spaghetti alla carbonara for dinner (we weren't that hungry). Delicioso!! Best carbonara I've ever had. We had a half liter of the house white wine (a very reasonable €3.50) which was a nice dry white. Plus complementary grappa and amaretto made on site (the amaretto is SOOOO GOOD). The Carbonara here was the BEST single pasta dish I had over my two week trip to Italy! We came across this place while strolling just after lunch and went in to make a reservation for later that night (Saturday). Upon our arrival, our table for 2 was reserved with our name on it. The server was prompt, and no nonsense, but did offer to explain any menu items we were unsure of, and wasn't unfriendly. As we were toward the end of our two week trip, we were comfortable enough to proceed without help. We started with the carbonara (to die!), and the gnocchi (very good). We had a taste for Tuscan steak just one last time, and although it looked amazing coming to the table, we did find it to be our least favorite steak of the 3 we had at various restaurants. Although it had a nice flavor, a good portion of it was fatty and chewy. We did our best, but left about half of it. However, I would go back simply for the amazing pastas. Also, we were brought house-made Amaretto and Grappa at the end. The bottles were left on our table for us to enjoy at our leisure. That was a nice touch. Give this place a shot for the local vibe and fantastic pasta. Get your steak someplace else though! read more

I would never ever eat here again and I would NEVER recommend this to anyone. We ordered an appetizer to share and each got a primi and a secondi. The evening started off nicely with wine and salami. When we got our primi I was delighted to try to gnocchi that everyone raves about and my partner got carbonara. When I went to take a bite of his carbonara dish, there was a hair in my mouth. I thought it could've been mine but as I pulled the hair out, the hair was ingrained into the pasta noodle. When the server came to grab the dishes I held up the pasta to tell him about the hair and he just ripped the dishes off of the table and then said a very unapologetic sorry while walking away. About 10 minutes later he comes back and says "any coffee or tea" to which my partner said we had ordered a secondi. In that moment we decided we didn't want to spend our money in an establishment that doesn't appreciate the consumer and their service. I told the server we did not want our secondi, we would take the check, and I would not pay for the half eaten carbonara that had hair in it. It took 20 min to receive our check and when we did receive it the pasta was on it. When I was ready to pay I again told the server I would not pay for the dish that my partner did not half eat because of the hair in it. He told me that his boss had prepared the check, he knew what happened and that he made the check full price. He tried to take my card to talk to his boss. I would not allow him to take my card because I knew he would charge me for the pasta. The waiter finally called his boss over and when I began to tell him what happened he said I don't speak English. The server finally came back to say to his boss again what happened. His boss said take it off and did not say a single apology or anything to us. Incredibly poor service. I would never go here again because of the hair in our food, the lack of sincere apology/any way to compensate, charging for the horrible pasta that wasn't eaten, the attempt to charge me by physically removing the card from my hand, and the owner not caring one bit. Just a short walk from our hotel we found this little restaurant. The older gentleman didn't speak English but gladly made us a reservation. We arrived early but they still sat us. I had the gnocchi it was to die for. If Jesus made gnocchi it would be here. My husband had rigatoni with ragu. Toss in a salad and a carafe of wine, topped off with dessert $38.59 euro out the door. We stumbled upon this restaurant by chance and were really delighted with our lunch. Lella and Dado were very welcoming and we could enjoy our lunch sitting outside. The food was amazing: the bruschetta was delicious, the "pici alla cinta senese" were incredible and the tiramisu very tasty as well. We stumbled in this little gem while strolling the streets on our way to our hotel. We ate at the Osteria Nonna Gina twice; it was so tasty, convenient, and reasonably priced. We didn't have a reservation but were seated promptly when we showed up at 7 and 8pm on another night. Perhaps we would been offered a better table- farther away from the bathroom- with a reservation. There were a few other tourists but mainly locals in the quaintly decorated warren of rooms. We understood and spoke a bare minimum of Italian, but the waitress offered to answer simple questions in English. The menu was handwritten in Italian. We enjoyed lovely fresh lettuce salads and were given salt, pepper, olive oil, and vinegar to dress them at the table. The side of spinach was tasty, though maybe previously frozen. The meatball dish(perhaps a mixtuure of beef, pork, and veal?) with tomato sauce and cheese was comforting, and the spaghetti carbonara was rich and delicious. We were both especially delighted with the carbonara). The chicken cacciatorre was also a highlight. The dark meat practically fell off the bones, and it was flavored with a delicious, savory sauce with onions and herbs. The tiramisu and pannacotta deserts were heavenly. The meal ended with complimentary grappa and amaretto. It was also nice that the proprietor kindly gave us a mild and creamy cheese with honey for antipasto when we requested it one night, though we found it under the desert section. This was uncouth of us, but we had admired those cheeses the night before when another table had ordered them. One night we enjoyed a flavorful bottle of Moltepulciano. Another night we had the easily-drinkable house Chianti in a half bottle. Each night a delicious, multi course dinner for two for around or under 50 euro- One tip- be sure to ask for the bill or you may find yourself waiting for quite a bit- we were still a little puzzled by Italian restaurant customs at the time. Just like the other review we were recommended by Daniel at hotel paradiso. The place is so authentic! The waitress did her best to understand us and the food was great! I recommend if you don't know Italian to just go in and tell them to bring you what they recommend. Say you want a beef dish and a sausage dish and wait for the best!
