Located inside the Surety Hotel, it's the kind of restaurant that feels elevated without being overly formal--and the best part is you don't have to be staying at the hotel to enjoy it! We started the evening with a bottle of wine before ordering the homemade Bolognese and the bison filet with smooth, creamy mashed potatoes. Both dishes were full of flavor and beautifully prepared. Staying at the hotel and had dinner here. We arrived at 5:45 and were told it was full of reservations and we'd have to eat at the bar. The whole time it was half empty and when our plates were served the server passive aggressive said "thanks for helping" because I guess he expected me to grab my own plate??? The Les Moines cocktail was disgusting and they charged $36 for a tiny corn pesto pasta with a tablespoon of corn in it....it's Iowa for crying out loud! read more

Great date night location. The night time vibes are romantic and feel classy. I want to mention that the service has always been super friendly from my first visit years ago to now! We went on a weeknight so it wasn't too busy till around 7pm. There's a parking garage a block away, close to HyVee. But I feel like street parking isn't too busy in the area either. I ordered the short rib pappardelle, a very savory pasta dish, it was delicious. Definitely more on the salty/savory side if that's your jam! I also ordered the Brussels sprouts which I ate so fast I didn't get to catch a picture! I highly recommend it as an appetizer! They were very crispy and delicious with their garlic aioli. read more

Ole lady and I came here on a drive by from Nebraska to Chi-Chi... This is how a restaurant is supposed to be / to operate. I am a professional at critiqueing places of eating & drinking. This place was completely professional from start to finish.. For realz... from the doorman/valet, to the hostess, to the bartenders/servers, to the maiter d, everything was completely on point. The atmosphere is clean, beautiful, bright & lively. I particularly love floor to ceiling windows where you can look outside, sip a nice cocktail, and watch the world go by... Stayed at the hotel for work and came here for dinner / drinks. Service was great and so was the food! We shared a couple of apps: chicken livers, peach burrata salad, and garlic Brie cheese. The chicken livers were so delicious - love the sauce they came in. The squeezable garlic clove that came with the creamy Brie was perfect. For my main, i got the seared salmon. It was cooked perfectly and seasoned just right with salt & pepper. Drinks were also really solid, but the espresso martini was batched and a bit too sweet for my liking. Loved this meal from start to finish. Gorgeous atmosphere; top notch service and execution by Connor, my server and the bartender. Delicious Korean meatballs, pork chop that was cooked to perfection and complemented by crisp wedge fries, a decadent creamed spinach, and a chimichurri aioli that was as delicious on the spuds as it was on the pork. Went for breakfast and a drink in the mid-evening and unfortunately the hospitality was a 1 on a scale of 5. All bartenders had a lack of urgency and it felt like the customer was an inconvenience to them. In the evening sitting at the bar I saw a couple walk out because the bartenders were talking to each other instead of providing great hospitality to the guest. My bartender signed when she had to make my mixed drink that had 4 ingredients. Zero smiles from either and it was not welcoming at all. Cool building & nice dining room. Had reservations & sat immediately. Drinks were good. I had a non alcoholic passion fruit drink & it was good. I had a Caesar salad & ricotta gnuki. Salad was good but gnuki amazing! Delicious sauce with mushrooms & the risotto gnudi which is like gnocchi. Was good. Wish I'd had a slice of bread to sop up that sauce. We recently visited the Mulberry Street Tavern as a date night before our kids came home for spring break. We made reservations for 6:30. My wife and I split the New York Strip, which was very good. There is a $10 split plate charge. We ordered the Smoked Gouda Mac & Cheese for a side, which we couldn't finish. The house wine was good. Overall, it was a pleasant date night in a new spot. Have you ever seen Zootopia the movie? Specifically, the part where they're at the DMV with the sloths....well, expect that kind of service. Painfully slow. The food we ordered was ok, it just took light-years to receive it and when we did finally get it, some of it was cold. It was surprising the service was so slow when the place was incredibly empty. Maybe 3 or 4 other tables being served. We witnessed one couple across from us, the husband got his food and the wife waited another 10 minutes before she got hers. If you have nowhere to be, by all means, come here to enjoy average food. Otherwise, maybe go to a place where a sense of urgency exists, like Craker Barrel. read more

Let me start by saying I have reviewed very few places less than 3 stars ... This review is coming from 2 separate visits The first time we went my fiance ordered 2 different meals that they "ran out of" by 7pm... okay fine! Didn't write a review for this but pretty odd to run out of 2 different meals by 7 pm! Also the waiter was definitely not friendly about it Today we went to brunch and I don't think I could name a single thing that went well other than their ranch! Every staff member I came into contact with was grumpy! Truly every single thing we ordered as a group of 4 came incorrectly! Like I said, I will commend the fries and ranch but it wasn't good enough to go back given the service! Pretty terrible experience, to the point where it was very funny by the end! We had reservations, parked in a nearby parking ramp and were impressed with the exterior of the building as we walked up to it (see pictures). The unique decor continued once inside (see picture of the blinged-out racoon near the welcome desk) and we were immediately seated at a table with a nice street view (see picture). We started with drinks and an order of Brussel Sprouts (see picture) - they were smothered in a rich sauce and tasted heavenly. My wife and I decided to splurge, but weren't that hungry - so shared a Ribeye (see picture). It was cooked to perfection as we ordered it (medium rare) and was tender and flavorful. Our friends ordered the Hanger Steak (see picture) and Smoked Mushroom (see picture) and they said they loved them and would recommend both. We did take a look at the Dessert Menu (see picture) and while several of them looked fantastic, we were just too full to order dessert. The menu was a bit above average price-wise and if you've read my reviews, I really struggle with the 3% 'cc recovery fee' which they also add (hey, handling cash isn't free and can shrink) - so can't go above a 3 on Value. Atmosphere: Mulberry has a laid back but exudes luxury. It feels like an exclusive dinning experience. Service: The service was great. My server made the best recommendations for food and mocktails. Food: I tried the French Onion Soup, Rosemary Fries, and the Half Chicken. Everything was delicious with great flavor. The skin on the chicken had a nice little crisp which elevated the flavor. This beautiful restaurant is attached to the Surety Hotel in downtown Des Moines. Bar seating, indoor and courtyard seating are dining options. The menu offers a variety of dishes with unique sauces. My mouth was watering just reading the menu, but let me tell you , when your waiter asks if you'd like to hear their recommendations you say YES! Andrae offered his top three and I'm glad he did because although the salmon was my choice, the mention of pasta made in house with risotto changed my mind. I ordered the short rib pappardelle and it was delicious. So much meat and the flavorings of the risotto and cheese sprinkles was perfection. Each bite literally melts in your mouth. The serving was so generous Andrae packed up half for leftovers. My husband had the smash burger- two burgers with heaping condiments in a potato bun. The accompanying French fries were so light and flavorful- perfect amount of salt and frying. I enjoyed a very nice white wine and my husband chose from a nice selection of draught beers. We had a show to attend at Casey's, had a reservation, and told the server of the show and time. We were at the restaurant in plenty of time and saw that many of the other customers around us had no food, which concerned us. We finally got a drink for my husband and myself and waited and waited to have our orders taken. We finally got our order in, but still, no one around us had food. We finally got to the point that we realized we would not get our dinners in time to make our show. Our server told us the food orders were going up towards the front of the restaurant for a party. Therefore, the kitchen was behind. We left. No appetizer, no dinner. Not enough help, my guess, on a night that had two major shows downtown and Drake Relays. Shame on you. Guess what? I won't be booking MST for my next event downtown. read more

The food was amazing, the service was outstanding and the ambiance was very pleasant. We had a steak entree as well as a salmon entree. Both were amazing! We will return. read more

Super excited to experience this restaurant inside our hotel. Had a reservation and were taken to table with a fun city view right away. Waiter was top-notch; attentive, on time, kind, and low key. The meal styarted with an old fashion and dirty martini, both delicious. The 2 appetizers were the roast garlic and then Brussels sprouts... the roasted garlic with tomato chutney was yummy, but the brake sprouts were NOT good at all (they were tough and you costly hrdley cut them due to the thick stock and the sauce was not pleasant). We each ordered a meal and planned to share, however the NY strip steak was fatty and had a lot of grizzle, so we ate the meatloaf. It appears they are trying to make fancy food for fancy food prices... when you should just order the meatloaf and smash burger with a salad and call it a day. We went here for a Winefest event (a local nonprofit that celebrates food, wine, and doing good in the community), it was a three course meal with wine pairings for each course. We had french onion soup and the grilled romaine salad to start. The french onion soup was okay but had a lot of cheese covering the top of it and the grilled romaine salad had a strong anchovie flavor. For our main course, we had the brook trout, the grilled culotte steak, and fries. The brook trout was absolutely phenomenal, it was large, and had great flavor. The steak was cooked well and had good flavor. For dessert, we had the chocolate cheesecake and the nutmeg cake donut. Highly recommend the nutmeg cake donut! Overall a great experience, really enjoyed the ambiance, and look forward to going back and ordering off their regular menu. read more

They only had one waitress and she was great but she was definitely struggling to keep up with the amount of people that were in there for lunch. Mulberry is located within The Surity Hotel. The hotel is beautiful. The Mulberry Tavern is also a very nicely appointed restaurant. It's not fine dining, yet is a step above bar food. We brought a party of 12. Our server was pretty decent. He had a fun sense of humor. We were there on a Saturday morning and we had the Tavern to ourselves. I'd say the food service was fairly slow. I did have the world's worst Bloody Mary. It was pretty much tomato juice and no celery, shrimp, olive, etc in a little juice glass for 15 bucks. I ordered what looked to be a good burger, and when it arrived it was a "smash burger", which I am not a fan of. I feel like smash burgers are made by people who actually don't know how to grill an excellent burger. They do have a beautiful outdoor garden eating area. I really thought it would be much better. I want to start off by saying, the food was delicious and had beautiful plating. The SERVICE was poor and the experience with the kitchen was the problem. Sunday (6/1) My husband and I were celebrating our 1 year wedding anniversary and planned to go see Josh Johnson at Hoyt Sherman after dinner. (7:30pm and 4 minutes away) we had arrived at 5:45pm (we had a reservation at 5:30pm but were running late due to babysitter) when we arrived there was 2 other tables that were occupied, I don't know how many were outside but there were three weighting staff. Our waitress was attentive until we got our starters and shared plate. After ordering our main we received our starters and shared plate 10 minutes later. She took our plates and we sat there for 2 minutes waiting for our mains. She then didn't come by until we basically flagged her down. We asked her "Will we be getting our mains soon?" Only to be told "Uh I don't know. Let me check." We literally hear "Steak in 10" from the kitchen staff. When she comes back we said we will have to take them To-Go since we have a comedy show. (At this point it's 7:00pm) She then goes on to sham us and tell us we should have planned to be at a "fine dining" restaurant for 2 hours. In a FULL RESTAURANT I would understand, but MA'AM there are two other tables here. I know how long a medium rare steak takes to cook. You clearly didn't put it in or they messed up in the kitchen. After 10 more minutes we still haven't gotten our food so I told my husband to go grab the car so we can just leave after it's done. Right after he left there was a woman (wasn't even a waitress, she was in jeans and a tshirt) putting some of our food in a bag. We are sat not even 3 yards away from the kitchen, and I hear "Oh, we don't have any Togo silverware." And in response the head chef (I'm assuming this because he was in a full black chef garb) says "They can eat it with their fucking hands for all I care." Fair to say, the food was good but the TREATMENT of paying customers was GARBAGE and not worth going back. My husband still tipped her 20%, because he's too nice. And lucky for you guys, Josh Johnson saved our anniversary date. read more

Not so much the service...not sure if the waiter was not "capable" or if he had too man6 tables, however, asking for another glass of wine twice in 20 minutes and waiting for salad that sat on the counter for 10 minutes and no water pitcher refill. We had a great summer-centric dinner here: Ricotta gnudi with oyster mushrooms and a dreamy sauce. (Would totally attempt to recreate.) Brussel sprout carbonara, which was mind-bendingly good: proof that carbonara sauce can make everything delicious, but also that crispy fried veggies are the best veggies (ok ok not always). Beef and veggie curry pot pie and side salad with pickled shaved onions was *chef's kiss* -- creative and craveable. And burrata with tomatoes, basil, micro greens, and a fire roasted baguette. Yummy. Plus great (light) drinks, a primo spot near the kitchen so we could preview what all was going out, and quirky decor like a bedazzled raccoon. A group of 4 of us had a night out starting in the lobby bar. We initially found a cozy seating area on the edge of the lobby, but abandoned that quickly for seats near the fireplace, as every time someone came in the front doors we were reminded it was the middle of winter! The server came over right away and got our drink orders. Drinks came out in a reasonable time and were well made, and we ordered a hummus appetizer, which was also good, but you may need to ask for a bit more flatbread, as we did. After drinks, we went over to the restaurant for our reservation, and were taken to a nice booth by the windows. Our server came over and talked us through the menu and we got some wine from their good selection and ordered our meals. On to the food... The best items were the Brussels Sprouts and the Herbed Fries. The Brussels Sprouts were perfectly cooked, with a very tasty sauce. The fries were crisp and delicious with a tasty garlic aioli. The entrees were also good, but slightly less distinctive. I had the Pappardelle Pasta. The pasta itself was fresh and nicely cooked. the duck ragu was good, and complimented the pasta well. A couple of the diners at our table got the half chicken, which was a nice-sized portion (1/2 chicken can sound a bit daunting!). They both enjoyed it; they weren't as wowed as some of the other reviewers, but it was good. The other diner got the salmon. She enjoyed it, but the middle was very, very rare, which was OK for her, but would have been too sushi-like for me. Service was very good - relaxed, but attentive. Our water bottle was restocked a few times, and our server stopped by frequently. However, I had some grips about almost everything we ordered and the price did not match the quality. We started with the chefs choice board which is $36 for an okay portion but there's definitely other places I would recommend getting a board before this one. The extra dirty martini I got wasn't very cold, tasted okay of vermouth, and only one olive. We ordered oysters that do not come with the usual dressings and already had some weird cucumber mix on it. Usually the vinegar/shallots and other sauces come on the side. Finally the steak frites would have been good except the steak was extremely chewy and had no flavoring on it. I'm all for a fresh, local steak but it needs proper seasoning. Two of the table members got the burger and this was very good. My friend also said the cauliflower steak was good. Truly I can't justify the price to eat here and would only come back to get a non-cocktail drink before eating somewhere else. I would also consider trying their bunch. read more

Nestled just inside a popular hotel, this fine ding option offers a good variety of American style cuisine. The lights are dimmed and the decor sets a romantic, upscale ambiance. We visited for my birthday dinner, a group of 5. We made reservations ahead of time which I highly encourage when you can especially in the current times. We did have to wait about 5-10 minutes after our reservation time to be seated. Once we were seated, our waiter greeted us in a timely manner offering water and requests of refreshments. This is where the establishment loses a star - the time it took to receive a beverage was discouraging. One of the individuals in our party asked for a brew when his entrée was served, and he didn't get it until his plate was cleared. Not ideal when you wish to enjoy your drink with your meal. He nearly forgot he ordered it until it showed up in front of him. Overall, I understand the goal of creating a fine dining experience, but I think there is something to be said about timely deliver of a beverage. The meal, that's quite different. Let's chat about the food. We ordered a Cheese Charcuterie, Ricotta Gnudi, French Onion Soup, several entrees and two sides. Everything was timed as expected for a fine dining establishment except the sides. The side dishes were served before we received our entrees. Quite odd in my dining experiences. By the time we got out entrees, I don't think anyone was actually hungry. Portions were well sized for all meals, nothing over the top. The mac n cheese and Brussel sprouts were favorites at the table as well as the French onion soup. I would encourage you to reserve a table ahead of time, plan for a two hour meal time, and come with an appetite. This is a fine dining experience, so expect prices to reflect that goal. read more
