This is an amazing local all-volunteer collective that works to distribute books free of charge to…read moreprisoners all across the state. I don't want to jump too high on my Foucault soap box, but critical studies of our social institutions leave much to be desired...and while a good pulp fiction novel is amusing from time to time, why don't we do something to actually allow prisoners to be educated rather than simply incarcerated? One thing you and I can easily do? Reach out to those who are trapped in this system by providing them an opportunity to educate themselves! You can make tax-deductible donations to both "Books To Oregon Prisoners" and "Portland Books To Prisoners." I dropped off about 75lbs of college books (ironically, this included my well loved post-structuralist/post modernism literary criticism textbook...) but for the exceptionally ambitious, you can get involved in one of their weekly volunteer nights to help package and ship! Here is a list from their website of other places you can drop off your donations: * The Haven Cafe @ the corner of SE 35th & Division * Laughing Horse Books @ 12 10th St. between Couch & Burnside * In Other Words Books @ 8 N. Killingsworth St. * Rocco's Pizza @ SW 10th & Oak * Hollywood Theatre @ 4122 NE Sandy Blvd. * Blackrose Collective Bookstore @ 4038 N. Mississippi Ave. * Food For Thought Cafe @ the Food Court at PSU - Smith Hall Do it. Do it. DO IT! ok. off the soapbox.

Star is for the Guard that gave me a mask to go in and use the restroom. Female Guard checking us…read morein has no customer service skills! I am a 70 yr retired State of Oregon employee. I UNDERSTAND RULES, I enforced them at 2 DMV's, I also had to deal with TERRIBLE employees like this lady at CRCI Saturday 2:00. I experienced humiliation, disrespect, and indignation by the way the guard talked to me. I had driven 2 hrs, with 7 month old baby Grandsons' fiancee'. Website said kids under 3 not counted, tried to put baby on the reservation list anyway, (unsuccesssful). Grandson has never seen his son. Visit time wasted waiting to enter. I asked for supervisor to make exception, (NO)! Fiancee went in, I headed for the bathroom when asked to leave so I did w/baby. I lugged 26 lb baby back to car. After 10 mins I had to go to the bathroom so bad, I walked back, forgot my mask in the car, I sat on the bench and started to cry. A wonderful Guard came out of the other bldg, gave me a mask and left the door open so I could go into bathrm. Lady Guard gave me a dirty look. I left, sat on bench to wrap blanket around baby, Lady Guard came out and yelled "YOU CAN'T STAY THERE", I said "I know". She yelled, "THEN GO! I was so embarrased with the visitors coming out at the same time. She needs to find another job, obviously hates this one. TERRIBLE state employee that treats the public like s---!
