So let's face it. Nobody wants to go to the DMV. I had been putting off getting my REAL ID for a long time. Knowing that the (current) deadline is May, I had to make an appointment just in case I had a reason to fly somewhere...hey it could happen. My appointment was at 10:30 am. The line was wrapped around the building. I was pretending like I was ok with it, but when someone came out and said everyone with appointments could jump the line and move up, I kicked it up to fourth gear. Unfortunately this excitement didn't last long. I got to the front of the line, and then an announcement comes over the intercom. "Entire state of Oregon has outage. License printing is down." I know I wasn't the only person upset, but it kinda killed my buzz. The woman who verified my information was super nice though. She was very impressed that I had all of the correct documents. Well since it opens tomorrow at 8 am, I am gonna take the trip out there and pray that the system is back up. If I am smart I will call before I go. read more

He was not helpful plus was very demeaning ,and just shrugged when asked about getting my car title (since it's originally purchased in california). And continued to tell me to call the DMV. I'm at the DMV...he all of a sudden had an answer then continues to crudely draw a map of the west coast to tell me where I go get my title. Told me I had to fly back to California. Does anyone enjoy a trip to the DMV? If you can, make an appointment on their website; you will be helped MUCH quicker than if you opt for standby. That said, the first available appointment for me was more than a month out so I came in and waited. And waited. And waited. They were on number 45 when I arrived at 10am, and I was number 128. It took about 3 hours for my number to be called. Plenty of people gave up and left. But that didn't seem to make a dent in the standby line. All said, the employees were remarkably friendly, professional and patient. Kudos to them! Book an appointment and if that fails, bring a book or an external battery pack for your phone. read more

Their website wastes 10 minutes explaining why you need an appointment- then tells you there are no appointments available- AT ALL! There is ONE phone number to call for the entire Portland metro area. That number doesn't go to anything. I left 3-4 messages and never heard back. I drove across town to make an appointment in person, but the systematic failures of the Oregon DMV prohibit making an appointment in any way other than the broken website or the useless phone number. DMV is a place that's going to be busy no matter what. Yes, it takes a very long time to get in and out. They have a confusing ticket number system. In a couple states I've been to; you get a ticket number from the worker, they flash it on screen when someone's ready to help you and call it over the speaker. Here, people press a button to get their ticket from the box. I had no idea I was supposed to get a ticket myself because there was no sign indicating and can be easy overlooked when walking in. A lot of people that's not from around Portland was just confused as I was. The information desk employee was very friendly and provided all the paper work I needed to fill out, after I was done I went back in line for him to look over. I got my vision test done too! I thought was kind of strange that they do it at the information desk. The woman at the window was efficient, friendly and patient while we worked through all my requests which included a registration, title, new plates and a new license. If you have an older car you would need to get a DEQ first. You should read the DMV book at least once. If you have a valid driver's license in another state and want to transfer to Oregon, you must pass a knowledge test, it's required. Its multiple choice computer test with 35 questions, but ends early when you passed. The only reason I would give it a "3" is because of the wait time; I was in and out within 3 hours and the need for additional staff. There should be a person staffed at every window and handling one person with all there needs instead of getting pass over to the next person, in my opinion. I thought every single person at DMV was friendly and helpful. read more

I've always dreaded going into DMV; this time was no exception. I was surprised at the Southeast location by the well-lit, clean space, and I was soon directed into a line for people who were fortunate enough to have an appointment. Within a few minutes of speaking with a friendly, upbeat and competent agent who also handled the vision test, my driver's license and real I.D. were updated and I was in a very short line for the picture I.D. (my least favorite part). The photographer cared enough to give me 3 tries on the photo, and I was handed a temporary license, pending receipt in the mail of my new one. I don't think the whole process took as long as a half hour--a very good experience. read more

They have an information desk to check in, where John, an incredibly patient gentleman, will explain to you any paper work you may need to fill out before hand and what line you need to be in. O.M.G to the O.D.M.V. So I had a renewal notice for my ODL and on it was a list of acceptable I.D. On the bottom of that list it said in blue bold. My Valid ODL would work as proof. Things to bring: 1.Valid I.D. 2. Proof Of Address (as in DMV Renewal Notice) I get there and as always, it's a zoo! I go to the counter. Pink Lady asked what I needed. I told her ODL Renewal. She said, without missing a beat, or any questions. I didn't bring proof of who I was because I didn't have my Birth Certificate! I show her the Renewal Notice and point to the Bold letters and get out my ODL. She in a snarky voice reads out loud all the list till the bottom and skips the bold. Again saying, I needed my Birth Certificate. This time, I read Out Loud the bold letters. Show her my ODL and wait. She takes my ODL and say's ( not even joking ) You must have gotten this in the last few years and we already saw your Birth Certificate. (In my head I said, Correct. An ODL is only good for a few years. So yes, I did get this ODL a few years ago) So having passed the gauntlet of DMV. I got my form and within 10 minutes had a new O. D. L. PS. Five stars for the DMV? Say what. I mean frankly, my expectations were so low to begin with I was STILL expecting to be disappointed. When I checked online, the wait time was at an even 30 minutes. Dangnabbit. Oh well, I had dilly dallied too long to renew my license so it was time to bite the bullet so in I went. They have a front desk person who asks what you're there for and gives you the appropriate forms, and also makes you have all the things you'll need to get your license/registration/etc. You also get a number, and when I looked up at what number they were on.....oh boy, I have a wait. Except no! They are, in fact, efficient here! I waited maybe 10 minutes and the guy helped me with the couple of things I needed immediately and in a friendly manner I wouldn't accuse most government workers of having. What can I say, every DMV is slow, because they are busy! It's the truth. I went in there knowing this truth so my wait was not too bad. I made a name change on my license. The bummer part was I had gone in the week before to inquire about what I needed to make this change (post divorce) & was told just bring in your legal document and well print you a new label for your license. Oh sweet, that sounded awesome. Well, when I went in today it took 1 hour! I had the fill out an application and pay $26.50. The fastest that I have ever got my DEQ test done! Now they have it all computerized to where you get out of car and unplug the test unit and then swipe your card for payment. BUT..... I am one of those people who lost their paperwork so now I have to take my pass certificate to the nearest DMV to get my stickers. Wow. I'm totally speechless about the DMV, and in a good way! I had finally bitten the bullet and needed to swap my out of state license for an OR one--the old one was expiring in a few weeks and I heard it's frowned about to walk around with expired ID. So before I went to the DMV, I checked out the site, grabbed the documents I needed, and went there ready to fight guns a blazing. Then life happened. I hightailed it out of work and realized I had barely under two hours to get there, fill out a form, pay, do the written test and pass, and get my photo taken. Previous experience taught me that I needed at least 4 hours, so I thought my butt was cooked. I walked in around 3:30ish and told the woman at the front what I wanted to do. She kindly let me know to try filling out the form as quickly as possible and she'll let the other staff peeps know I'm taking the test since we were cutting it close to 4:00 (the time they stop the tests). I think I stared blankly at her for a good second because she was so nice. (I'm still new to Oregon and the Niceness thing is still new to me). So I filled out the form, paid my fee, took the test (passed!), and got my photo taken. I was out in 30 minutes total. 30. MINUTES. What sorcery is this? No long lines, no pissed off customers, no disgruntled employees. Clear and organized signs. Clean and open atmosphere. They take cash, debit, and credit cards! And are that smiles I see? A part of me is impressed. A part of me slightly disappointed that I didn't have a chance to use my inner Pissed Off voice. I feel conflicted. I never thought I'd say this, but I'm impressed, DMV. "Yay I'm a fan" is kind of a stretch, but I don't hate it. I had to go get my DL renewed (fine - I also lost it) so I decided to drop by to the closest DMV. There used to be another one on 82nd which was my favorite but that one has since closed. I pulled into the lot and though "uh oh...what have I gotten myself into" because the lot was practically full. I opened the door and to my dismay, the bright lights and big room reflected the parking lot. OK - don't panic. Grab a number, boo...that the number is 150 and they're on 50. Noticed the sign that says to grab a number and see the information booth so I did. The very pleasant, efficient guy told me I only have to go into the Express line. I waited and there's about five people in front of me but only one person working the Express desks. The workers seem to rotate and do express and other desks call out numbers. Not fast but not terrible slow either. After about half hour or so, I was out of there with a temporary Drivers License, a sense of accomplishment and happy that I went to this DMV. Only way to get a 5 star would be if there was nobody in the waiting room and 5 people working waiting for you. People complaining about waits, it's a DMV, what do you want? read more

Nothing can kill your afternoon like a trip to the DMV. I finally got around to replacing my California driver's license with an Oregon model. Hey, it was hard to give it up. That was the best ID photo I've ever had--all SoCal tan and smilin'. Yeah, I'm used to the California DMV, which is probably the most notorious, hellhole-ish den of bureaucracy ever devised by man. Seriously, the DMV in Van Nuys, CA is heinous. HEINOUS. Thank God Oregonians don't seem to abide such excessive governmental indignities. This branch of the Oregon DMV is small and relatively efficient. I like the way all of the counter folks call the numbers. No need for a loudspeaker--they just holler 'em out. I was more than a little worried when I saw the light-up number counter on the wall read "94" and my number was "42". I was preparing myself for a long afternoon. However, it only took about 45 minutes. I passed my test and got a temporary paper license. I was told that the real license will arrive in about a week. Cool. Don't forget to take plenty of forms of ID with you, if you're getting a new license. Jeez, they scrutinized my birth certificate like Donald Trump getting his hands on Obama's long form. All-in-all, not a horrible experience. read more

The first thing you'll notice upon arriving at the DMV is the lack of parking spaces, the second is the line of people waiting to get a number just to wait in line again, & the third is the unpleasant odors hovering around the room. The easiest way to get through the DMV, if you're the one renewing your driver's license & are short on time, is to have someone else get in line for you. Seth needed to renew his license but he wasn't off work until 3:30pm. I had the day off so I headed to the DMV when he got off work to wait in line for him. When I reached the information desk #375 was called & I was given ticket #410. By the time Seth got to his car, fought through Friday traffic (Powell & 87th is the worst location for a DMV), & entered the building #403 was called. He waited only 10 min from the time he arrived to the time he got his picture taken & interim license handed to him. Me? I waited an hour. The DMV hours are very inconvenient for the working person; closed by 5pm during the week & not open on the weekends. This is why you should find someone who has patience & is willing to wait on your behalf. There are only 13 DMV counters/clerks to help the hundreds of clientele. The help desk right up front controls the ticket number machine instead of you grabbing a ticket yourself. She/he will also provide everything you need before handing over a ticket & letting you move forward. Be sure to have all your documents before even stepping foot into the DMV otherwise you're wasting yours & everybody else's time. Overall the process was fast for Seth & since I had nothing else to do I didn't mind the wait. We had friendly customer service from the clerks we dealt with & overall the experience was A-OK. read more

I came here to update my title and though I was stressed out at first, having gone first to the now closed Powell location, I left very happy. I was in and out in less than ten minutes and the service I got was not at all what I have come to expect in my 35+ years of occasional DMV visits. My number was called immediately and though I feared I hadn't filled out the form correctly I was assured they were there to help, I only needed to add my signature and hand over my check. I left in such a good mood it didn't seem real. This DMV has relocated to Mall 205; it is now located inside Mall 205 next to Famous Footwear. There could be more signs outside directing individuals to its location, but once you do find it, it is a great improvement to the previous building. The Mall 205 space is very big and well lit. When you walk in, you grab a number and then visit the "Information" desk where an associate gives you all the necessary paperwork to prepare you for your visit. I was very impressed with the organization as it made for an efficient visit. read more

Hands down, the friendliest and quickest DMV experience I ever had. I needed to transfer my California license to an Oregon one, arrived around 12:30 pm on a Tuesday, and was out by about 1:30 pm. I was called super quickly once I took a number (despite a decent chunk of people being ahead of me) and had a super friendly individual help me out. They warn people not to go to DMVs on Fridays, but I was in the area and needed to renew my license. WTH. I got there a little after 2:30. Lot of people sitting there waiting but only one person in front of me in the "triage" line. Wasn't sure how long it was going to take. Incidentally, within 5 minutes, the triage line filled in behind me. So timing and luck matter. After reviewing my renewal app, the triage clerk put me in the express line. I guess is standard procedure for generic license renewal. It turned out I was also the 2nd person in the express line. There were 2 clerks handling express clients. When I was next up, one of the clerks went on break! It worked out alright, probably only added an extra 5 minutes to my wait. The actual renewal process. The triage clerk had reviewed all my documents and said they were all in order, but the woman in the express line did not want to accept my proof of citizenship - even though the triage clerk said it was okay. In addition, it was a perfectly legal document issued by the Feds. Ultimately, it was accepted but it seems like they need to get things in better order here. I read other reviews having problems with them accepting their documents. I then waited to get my picture taken. I expected a long wait, but it only took 5 minutes! In total, I think that it only took me a total of 30 minutes in the DMV office - including time in the line! That isn't bad for a Friday. FYI, to insure that things go smoothly. I would recommend that you bring more than one item to prove both your identity and citizenship. if you extra items, it wouldn't hurt to bring them along. If you don't have documents that they are willing to accept, you might end up in the waiting area - not the express line - assuming that they don't send you home completely. read more

Regardless of your standing in society...you are required to take a number: Homeless (or hipster) dude who smells like he hasn't showered for 3 days? Take a number. A 16 year old girl who has no business driving her dad's Porsche? Take a number. Beyonce? Take a number. Recent transplant from California? GO BACK WHERE YOU CAME FR...err, ahem...take a number. The ticketing machine is the modern day version of the sorting hat from Hogwarts. I was selected to sit amongst the sea of wizards and muggles hoping to renew their broom permits. 5 minutes later, the attendant glanced at my forms and pointed me to my magic terminal. After a quick exam, I was deemed flight worthy once again. Another 10 minute wait to snap my enchanted portrait, and I was all set. I've been to DMVs in a few different states and this was by far the fastest. My experience in communist Hogwarts was efficient, painless, and even pleasant. DMV Attendant: "You're a wizard Johnny." As far as DMVs go, this one isn't too shabby. The clerks range from stern and business like, to kind, and hilarious. The line really does move, and provided you come prepared (look up things online beforeheand), you will get in and out pretty quickly. Oregon is one of the only states requiring you to take a written test for a license, even if you are licensed out of state. Word to the wise, when taking the touch screen computer test, use the "skip" button liberally if you don't know the answer. The goal is just to accumulate the minimum required number of correct answers ,and then the test stops and you pass. This seems far better than not using the skip button, guessing a lot and failing. A quick glance through the pdf manual online and common sense will get you through ok. You can register to vote while getting your license, and also get your plates the same day if you are the title holder. Not bad at all. The problem is, they are only open business hours, no weekends, no late nights. You need to arrive before 4 p.m. if you want to take the written exam. For my work schedule, this is IMPOSSIBLE. It is very inconvenient to the conventionally employed people of Portland (we make up about 15% of the population, no?). I've had to go on sick days when I was a groggy, ill zombie who should have been in bed recuperating. I sure hope that most of the rest of my DMV business can be done online or via mail! read more
