Small yet relaxing state forest!…read more Found the forest while looking for a nice spot to have a picnic. It's small but never seems crowded. I've been on both weekdays and weekends, and most weekdays you'll only share the place with a handful of people. It's $7 to enter the park (if someone's at the gates), $13 / night to camp, and $5.35/hour to rent a small boat or canoe. The forest hosts a lake for swimming (sand beach) or boating, two playgrounds, a plethora of grills, and many covered pavilions with picnic tables. Things to know before you go: there is no running water that I could see, however the restrooms were kept well stocked. This is also a place where you leave with everything you came in with, including trash. There are no trash cans available. I usually make it a habit to stop at the gas station headed back into town. ALSO: bring bug spray!

If someone is on the gate the price is $7 to enter and despite the fact that its a smaller park it does have a lake that allows for kayaking, fishing & electric trolling motors only. Jon boats & canoes can be rented by the hour and the lake has a beach area where a handful of children were taking advantage of the good weather. A lifeguard isn't provided but there is a changing house. There are grills within the park and we had a small portion of the lake to ourselves while grilling. There are picnic tables & benches around one side of the lake and it made for a peaceful break during the normal work week. Camping is available for tents and other sections for campers & RVs. The hiking is limited but if you combine all the trails & fire lanes its about 10 miles. The city of Ferdinand is what I call a sleepy little city and I mean that in the best way, so on a Wednesday I saw only a dozen people on this day and relaxed, avoided COVID and look forward to a time when its safe to try the local brewery & restaurants.

Such great prices for an amazing location. We set up our tent on a peninsula overlooking the lake with nobody near us. The interstate noise carried, but it wasn't too loud. We didn't put on the rain fly and could hear the crickets, frogs and fish jumping. Campground was well kept. Clean bathrooms, mowed lawn, playground for kids, and everyone (staff and campers) were friendly. Perfect spot to test out my new tent. Great park to enjoy Indiana summer nights!

Beautiful and easy walking trail located in Brandenburg Kentucky. We decided to check this place…read moreout after stopping by in popular Brandenburg attraction jailhouse pizza. The gps with the current yelp address took us to some industrial area with construction called buttermilk falls commerce. It said we had another 1.5 miles to go but there was a sign that said trails with an arrow pointing left. Right past that is a security shack for the commercial buildings. The very nice gentleman there told us the gps is wrong that we can park in a gravel lot right behind us where the trails sign was. Or if we were out of Towners he recommended parking at riverfront park right by jailhouse pizza and grabbing some pizza and walking the calories off as the other entrance is located there. We literally had just left that area so we did some unnecessary driving. After popping a u turn and parking in the Gravel parking lot you enter a park entrance that is gravel and has a sign. Buttermilk falls is about 2.5 miles one way and on a straight line that ends at the river front park. We took the concrete road and about 1/4 a mile in you see a break off nature path called "Emmett falls trail" you could either go here or stay on the concrete path. We took the scenic wooded path. It was about .5 miles of real beautiful and pretty scenery until we reached the very large and wonderful Emmett falls. They have a lovely seating area right at the bottom and you can climb to the top of th waterfall as well. Emmett falls is the only "large" waterfall in buttermilk falls. At the tail End of the trail towards the riverfront parks you hit stretch of several beautiful small ones. But Emmett is the big boy! After that you you can trek back onto the path you was in before veering left to the waterfall and continue forward which will take you back to the concrete path you was originally on. Or you can cross over to the concrete path immediately and then head back to the gravel parking lot by hanging a right or continue left and move forward on the concrete path. Once back on the concrete path you will cross a few lovely bridges and scenic opportunities. You will encounter one port o pot about the halfway point. You continue along the concrete trials and as you get closer to the riverfront park entrance there are several very small and beautiful water falls everywhere on both sides of the concrete path. Very lovely and great photo ops. Once reaching the other small waterfalls we turned around and took the concrete path all the way back. So we kinda created are own loop. Very nice, simple and beautiful walking trails. As for where to park for out towners like myself it depends on want you want to see. If you want to see the huge Emmett falls first then I would park at the entrance of buttermilk falls commerce as it is closer to that entrance. If you want to see several tiny ones first then start at the river front park entrance. If your gonna see both then either is good. It would of been nice if we had known you could enter through river front park as we had literally just left that area after eating jailhouse pizza. But either way we still had a great time and enjoyed. I will give a warning at least for AT&T users. You will not have great reception here. Calls and texts are spotty and internet is a no go. So bring plenty of charge and do some pre planning if that's a necessity for you. Overall absolutely worth checking out. We spent a day in Brandenburg all in that same vicinity and the entire family and group of friends we went with had a wonderful and memorable time.

Completely free to visit! There is a large parking lot at the Memorial Hall and also some parking…read morecloser to the living history farm. The Memorial Hall is a good place to start with a short educational video, some small exhibits, and the gift shop. The Memorial Visitor Center closes from 12-1 pm for lunch, so plan accordingly if you need to use the nice clean bathrooms or fill your water bottle. The park includes a pioneer cemetery, a living history farm, a memorial to the Lincoln family cabin, and some short trails. When we visited (late May) on a weekday morning, there were no historical interpreters at the living history farm, and the buildings were all locked. I'm not sure when the living history farm is functional, but it looks like it would be fun. I highly recommend the Trail of Twelve Stones, which leads you through the peaceful woods along a path which houses 12 stones from significant locations in Lincoln's life.

Abraham Lincoln is great and almost universally identified as the greatest president ever. I've…read morebeen to his birth site in Kentucky, His tomb, Presidential Library and home in Illinois and his memorial and place of death in Washington DC. This was basically my last spot in my pilgrimage to all things Lincoln. This was probably the least interesting of all the sites that I listed above, The visitor's center has a small gift shop, the usual National Park rangers to give you maps and knowledge and a theatre to watch a little film about the Honest One himself. From there you walk up to the Pioneer Cemetery where there is a memorial for Abe's mother Nancy who is buried somewhere near that spot. She died of milk sickness all because a cow ate a snakeroot plant! Thank God for modern medicine! Anyway from there you walk up to replica of the cabin they would have lived in and an active farm that looks as it would have when Lincoln was there. The last spot is a spring that the Lincoln's would have carried water from. All in all it was a mile walk each way. You can drive closer to some of these spots as well if you lack feet. All in all I'm glad the place exists but it's not a must do spot for the casual history buff.

If you are hiking on the trails don't go when it's damp because they are extremely slick. Some of the rv sites are small but workable. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. My biggest concern is the front gate. It is locked with a chain and padlock so you have to get out of your vehicle to unlock it open the gate and drive through then get back out to close it and lock it. The lock numbers are 5 font so hard to see and it sticks sometimes which is so fun when raining. I felt so vulnerable doing this after coming back from visiting family. They really need an automated gate!

If your someone who enjoys late night jams, camping in the woods, having an adult beverage and enjoying the wee hours of the night..... this is NOT that place. They have limited sites for RVs near the late night stage and camping area. We were forced to camp at the front of the park because staff did not allow you (first come first serve, we arrived when gates opened first day) to pick your camp spot in your designated ticket location, so we had a long walk to enjoy the late night shows. We are musicians who go to music festivals to enjoy great music and campsite jam sessions with various people. This "festival" greatly disappointed us.

My personal favorite is the nature trails all the way in the back, it's about a .75 mile loop, hilly and fun. Great for dog walking, too. There are old cabins in the back you can walk through and check out, kind of fun to see. And if you attend ROMP, they have an after party/show at one of those cabins! So cool to see them utilized. Definitely check out yellow creek park if you want a nice run or walk or to entertain kids, dogs, etc.
