First of all, I want to apologize to the staff for taking so long to write this review! (It's been a busy week) My experience with Murphy's was so excellent, I don't know where to start! Although the food and the ambiance was great, the best part of my visit was the customer service! On February 19 2017, my father and I stopped in to have lunch at Murphy's on our way to Cole Harbour. Unfortunately, we ran into some car trouble and were unable to get his car unlocked. Not only did the staff help us by determining the size of battery Dad would need to put in his remote car starter, they also called around to a few local businesses to see if any of them were both open on a Sunday and carried the battery he would need. Fortunately, only one business carried the battery, but they were on the other side of town. One employee very graciously lent him her car -- yes you read that correctly -- so Dad could make the short trip while I stayed behind. They even gave me a slice of pie on the house while I waited! I have never seen a business go so above and beyond for a customer before! I want to let the staff know we're both so thankful for their help and look forward to dropping by for fish and chips again soon! read more

This is my wife and I's favourite restaurant. We love this place and try to come by every time we go for a bike ride. Both the fish and chips are super crispy even after it sits for a bit. Crazy how they can make that happen. Love this place and kudos to the staff! read more

We were pleasantly surprised by this restaurant. The fish and chips were really good, much better than we had expected. The batter was very light and the fish and fries were not very oily. Checked on Yelp and this looked like a happening place to eat in Truro. When in the maritime Canada I really enjoy the fresh seafood. Here the specialty is the fish and chips. Lots of items on the menu are fried so beware if greasy food is not to your preference. What enticed me was that they claim to be #1 in Canada for English style fish and a chips. Very interesting a was thinking. So I gave it a go. I went with the seafood platter which was a mix of clam strips, one piece of fish, fried scallops, fried shrimp and I went with onion rings instead of the chips ($23.99). The fish was quite nice and light. The scallops were delicious (possibly frozen but delish none the less). The shrimp was frozen not fresh and lacked flavour, the onion rings were horrible. You could tell not fresh but the frozen variety. I didn't even finish them and for someone taught not to waste food this is a rarity. I checked to see and it was 1991 in Chatelaine magazine in which it was declared the best Fish n chips. I'm not sure almost 25 years later that a restaurant should be allowed to keep the moniker. It's actually quite funny they still advertise this. Overall it was an okay meal. Definitely I've had better and I've had worse also! The table next to me one big fella ordered a three piece fish and chips. I watched in breathless abatement as he squeezed three tartar sauces plus then went to squeeze ketchup plus a few shakes of salt on his fish plate. "Different strokes for some folks" I was thinking. Pricing was decent for my platter but don't come with high expectations. 3/5 is a very generous rating but the service was pleasant and nice. Decor is in old Maritime boats and sea ornaments. They played 60's music which was never obscene and good for the crowd the night I dined! read more

I can't believe I'm admitting this, but I broke my vegetarian habits to eat at Murphy's this evening. Gimme a break, I was starved and a friend dragged me here. And he paid. ;-) I had the traditional 2-piece fish and chips. Admittedly I've only ever had F&C perhaps a handful of times in my life (I know, I know, I'm a freak. Close your mouth). My first raised eyebrow happened when we were seated at an unwashed table with the comment "well I guess I'll put you at the less dirty spot." Second raised eyebrow when the waitress came to wash the table and it was still filthy when she was done. Third raised eyebrow when my colleague looked at me and said "oh my god, she's not very friendly is she." When the meal came it was hot and looked pretty in their classic presentation of fish piled on top of fries on a fish-shaped ceramic plate. They gave us teeny tiny helpings of tartar sauce, and a decent helping of coleslaw. My friend put one of the pieces of fish on his napkin for a few minutes, and once removed the tissue was literally dripping with grease. The batter was crisp but the inside was a little slimy. Is that how F&C are supposed to be? It was as squishy as okra. (I guess I totally outted myself as veg there, eh? Do non vegetarians eat okra on a regular basis like I do?? It's the slimiest vegetable you'll ever chomp on). The price was pretty good, though, and if you're not looking for a gourmet meal then you'll probably like Murphy's. I'm only giving it two stars, though, because I've gone there twice in my life and I could care less if I ever go back. But that's just me. read more

Tourist trap. Fish and chips are okay, very greasy (moreso than others). Nautical decor is interesting but otherwise you can do better.

1st time at Murphy's for a Saturday lunch with 9 friends and the place was packed. Have to admit the service was fast and meals arrived promptly. I had the seafood platter because I wanted a sampler for this review. I couldn't finish it all but I was most impressed with the haddock. All of our table (9) thought the food was excellent. Fish and chips were very good, however, we didn't care for the tarter sauce. The cole slaw and fries were good. The pieces of fish are quite large. One is almost enough while two pieces is to much. This place is so good we went twice during our trip to the East Coast, making a special stop in Truro the second time! The food was excellent. An airy batter on the fish - not greasy at all. The portions are huge. We thought we had big appetites, but one piece with the mountain of fries was enough for me; 2 for my husband with mashed potatoes. The second time, we learned the hard way that the seafood platter ($23.99) is big enough to share for 2! We ordered that, plus another 1 piece fish and had a hard time finishing it all. But the Digby clams on the seafood platter were also great. Service was excellent; special mention to Natalie who makes all her customers feel special and at home! :) read more

I was expecting alot more from Murphy's. I went based in a recommendation from my grandmother. I ordered beef barley soup and the fish and chips. The soup was amazing. The fish and chips were OK. Fish was dry but the batter was nice. The Fries were flavour crisp store bought, I would have expected hand cut fries from a "famous" fish and chips place. The waitress was friendly but we only saw her to take our order and bring the food, our drinks didn't get refilled, and we couldn't get her attention when my guest ran out of Tartar sauce, he got a two piece and it came with enough Tartar sauce to thinly coat half a piece if fish. The coleslaw was the same as you get at KFC, green Mayo flavour mush with cabbage bits. The decor was very cute and the lady the greeted us was very animated and made me smile, called me "sweetie" :) The fish and chips come on a very cute but very disfunctional fish shaped plate that made it difficult to eat without all the fries coming off. It wasn't awful , I wouldn't go back but I'm not sorry I went. If I Did find myself there again, I would just stick to the soup. read more

I was here over the Easter weekend and the staff were super friendly! The friendliest service I've experienced in awhile and this place doesn't need it. They could be rude as heck and I'd still go back. I poked fun at their menus claim to "best fish and chips in Canada" and although I haven't eaten at every fish and chip joint across the land, this place would for sure give them a run for their money. 3.5 stars. This is one seafood house that knows how to fry. Everything (fries, clams, onion rings, and fish) had a perfect crisp. Only one thing I did not like on my plate was the boiled carrots. Just why mess with perfection? Perhaps if they were fried.... Service was great. I asked for seating near an outlet, since we were driving long distances and our phone was dying. She found us the perfect booth and was prompt with the order and checked up on us regularly during the meal. No fault there. The only real complaint is that though I recognize that fried food is inherently greasy, when drained properly, it doesn't leave oil slicks on your finger. Stumbled across this restaurant when another plan fell through. I consulted Yelp for alternatives and found this little gem. I don't know if the woman who works at the cash/take out area owns the place or if the owners just found an employee with the perfect personality to work there. Despite a very full restaurant, clients waiting for tables, and clients waiting for take out, she was upbeat, friendly, greeted everyone who came through the door, and kept everyone happy. As it was so busy, I was really concerned how long it would be for takeout, given the lineup for tables and the fact that I had not ordered ahead (their website is currently under construction). I had my food and was on my way before the second group of waiting customers received their table. And the food was delish - and that is not something I say often. The clams were fresh, whole, and cooked perfectly. The haddock was well cooked with a light and flaky coating. And the fries were great too. They use the coated fries, which are my preference. I know where I will be eating if I am in Truro and am looking to dive into some great seafood! read more

Seen and sat right away. Tasha took our order as we were ready, a single and 2 piece fish and chips. Food probably came out 3/4 minutes. Super fast and awesome cause I was hungry! The plates were small fishes which was cool but the size of the plates are too small. It's a trick to make the portions look bigger. Portions are huge anyway. The fish was amazing, the batter light and fluffy and super hot! Fries hot and crunchy and delicious!! Yum yum yum! The best part is how many local sports teams and charities the owners support - the back wall is *covered* in thank you notes, cards, and photos from the people that they have supported. Seriously one of the best deep fried fresh fish I have ever had. I did not eat the chips so can't comment (I should have asked if possible to substitute a salad). Ordered the two piece fish and chips, both of which were perfectly cooked. Definitely a generous portion, I could barely finish it and left full and satisfied. In addition to the good food and friendly service, the owner was very friendly and had a refreshing outlook on running a successful business, which is probably why my experience was so memorable. I highly recommend this place to anyone who is a fish and chips lover, and even if you're not, they had a substantive menu so there is something for everyone. I can honestly say that this is one of the best fish-and-chips spots I have every visited. Take into consideration that I'm a self-professed food lover and I come from Newfoundland, with it's Ches's Fish and Chips fame. The staff are absolutely some of the most professional, friendly people who really care about their customers. Our server, Lisa? was fantastic and eh casher had to be one of the sweetest people you'd ever know. The food was absolutely fantastic! Both myself and my stepfather d the fish and chips. Fish was flaky and well cooked (not overcooked). The batter was light and delicious. The fries were great, too. My mother had the Turkey Dinner and thought it was great. She ordered a soup to take away, which she enjoyed also. I ordered the Fish Cakes as a take out. Chow was included as part of the order. I have that as a treat for later. Best haddock and chips I had in Atlantic Canada. The fish was fresh & juicy and the pieces where huge! The batter was light and crispy. The place was packed (lined up out the door) with locals as well as tourists. If even the locals go there, it speaks volumes about their food! The amount of self-promotion inside the restaurant is kind of off-putting. Any establishment that constantly tells you that they are the best probably isn't. The location is certainly nothing special - it's just a rectangular restaurant in a strip mall on a busy street. The decor is just your average inexpensive family restaurant setting. I did order the fish and chips, and the serving was huge. Two adults could easily split one order. The fish was somewhat greasy but tasted fresh. The French fries were crispy. After hearing much talk on this place from all the locals I decided to give it a go. Fish portions are huge. I wasn't a fan of the chips. I expected them to be freshly cut. But they tasted like bagged fries. And they were soft. Fries need to be crispy not soft. Nothing overly special. read more
