Originally wasn't going to check it out but was nearby. Plenty of pieces to view for even the casual browser. It was cool to see a lot of his early work. No picture taking is allowed inside and they have staff to monitor as well. Admission is 11€ and good sized gift shop inside. read more

Easy to buy tickets online. Pretty easy to find. Friendly people to help you. They offer lockers to store backpacks/ small luggage with a refundable deposit. Museu Picasso has an interesting collection of works from the great Picasso but ultimately felt sterile and tame for a museum solely dedicated to a man with such a unique perspective. After suffering through the rain for most of the day, our tour group concluded the day at Museu Picasso. When we got there, the line was pretty long but thankfully being part of a tour group we were easily able to bypass the line. The museum itself is pretty small with collections of works primarily from his early formative years. While I did appreciate being able to see his progression from a painter grounded in reality, there felt to be something lacking in the telling of the story. During these formative years, his artistic perspective was much like others at the time making the collection of work seem rather ordinary and not representative of the surrealistic style that is signature of Picasso. Plus, the simple white and black design throughout the museum to form the narrative felt uninspired. The major collection it does carry in his more surrealistic period is the series he did for the classic "Las Meninas." Of all the paintings, this section was perhaps the most interesting. It was interesting to see how he would do recreations with different colors and perspectives to get a glimpse into the workings of the genius at work. Unfortunately, there is a strict no photos policy in the museum which was another downside. While there are not many paintings I necessarily felt like I needed to take a picture of, but not being able to really made the trip seem like a waste of money. Overall, Museu Picasso is a worthwhile visit for art lovers but consider it ultimately a tourist trap. read more

If you've read my reviews of art museums in Europe you'll know that I was largely ignorant of history in my younger years, so much of the history and lately art appreciation I've come to develop have been as a result of my trips to the various European countries over the last three years. Though Picasso is a household name I had only seen a few of his works at the Peggy Guggenheim Museum in Venice the year prior and those pieces weren't even the most noteworthy of that collection. As a museum dedicated to a single person I was able to know and appreciate more of Picasso's life and works, though as many people will tell you the museum only focuses on the works created at the beginning (pre-1917) and ending of Picasso's life (after 1957) and none of the "middle period" works that many people would associate him with (cubism). The museum takes up what was once 5 palaces located on the Carrer de Montcada. Picasso's close friend and personal secretary Jaume Sabartés would keep many of his friend's works over the years and his collection would eventually become the core part of the museum's collection. While the museum was opened during Picasso's lifetime Picasso himself was staunchly anti-Franco and refused to return to Spain though Picasso himself also donated more of his works there. LOGISTICS - Location: Barri Gòtic, east of the main street Via Laietana. The nearest Metro stop Jaume I (on L4) puts you at a 5 minute walk. - COST: €12 for general admission, bookable up into two months in advance An audio guide is available for €5 extra while guided tours are available on certain days of the week in Catalan, Spanish, English and French for €6 (booked up to a month in advance). There are periods of FREE admission every Thursday from 6pm onwards and all day on the 1st Sundays of the month, but you can only get tickets for them up to 4 days in advance. At this point in my life I'd rather just pony up the €12+ to avoid hassle. - Note that this is one of the Big Seven attractions in Barcelona that are so popular that buying your ticket in advance is all but essentially required. Though this forces you to structure your day, I was able to see what I wanted in terms of the major sightseeing. I purchased a guided tour at a Wednesday at 3pm with Pau as my tour guide. As a guide he was easy to understand and was very knowledgable on the museum's collection. The one hour tour talks about the highlights of the museum's pieces in chronological order. As supplementary material I used Rick Steves' Barcelona's "Picasso Museum Tour" and a very informative page put together by the museum to describe the highlights (http://www.bcn.cat/museupicasso/en/collection/highlights.html). While there was no singular piece that I was in love with there were some pieces that captured my attention because it showed Picasso's talent at such a young age: "The First Communion" and "Science and Charity". For the latter it is said that Picasso took many attempts for the women's faces but for his father's face he was able to capture it in a single attempt. I also liked his many interpretations of Las Meninas by Diego Velasquez and the series of paintings on pigeons from the balcony in Cannes. Sabartes made it a point to be the museum that housed all of Picasso's paintings of Las Meninas. I was satisfied with my visit to this museum although my single visit is sufficient enough for this trip. Still I recommend this museum as part of a must-see sightseeing itinerary for Barcelona, if you are a Picasso fan or if you simply want to take a break from seeing "yet another Gaudí building". After you are finished with this museum an excellent tapas place would be El Xampanyet around the corner and/or Churreria Laietana if you want something sweet. read more

I am not a fan of Picasso but the rating is based on the display of the art, the facility and how well the historic paintings are categorized and labeled. I am glad I had the opportunity to visit the museum and confirm that his style of paintings is not my favorite. There is one piece that is impressive and that is one he did in his younger years and is one he made of his mother. You will find lots of small stores in the area. I came here for the first Sunday. I arrived 10 minutes before opening (at 9 am) to get tickets. There was a long line for tickets but I was able to get into the museum by 9:15 am. You start out with the temporary exhibitions before moving to the permanent exhibitions. Exhibitions are interesting. An amazing collection of Picasso artworks from his very first portraits and works through many of his much later masterpieces. Neatly curated and well organized, it takes you through a complete history of Picasso from beginning to end. The museum does tend to get a little loud when the teenagers are passing through. Otherwise, they keep the crowds to a certain limit by only selling a certain number of tickets for each time period. Still, you'll have a better experience early in the day and on days without school kids. My biggest complaint was the lack of seating. I guess that this is to keep people moving through the museum but a brief rest or an opportunity to spend more time with the art would have been great. Excellent gift shop with post cards, prints, tshirts, all sorts. And for the posters, they have cardboard shipping tubes for sale. No photographing allowed. Such an impressive museum. I am not a huge "art person" but figured I should see this museum as long as I was there. The museum was set-up up well, so that you walk through his lifetime of artwork in a linear pattern, explaining the different periods of Picasso's work and how his life impacted these works of art. I walked out with a much better understanding of his history and appreciating his work more than ever. Based on everything I have read, you should probably buy your tickets in advance to avoid the long lines. If you are not sure when or if you want to go though (ie you want to play it by ear)- I went on a Wednesday in the early evening and was able to get day of tickets with no issues and had no line to wait in. read more

Absolutely a must see if you love art or even love it a little. What you need to know: 1) Purchase your tickets in advance!!!! I can't stress this enough. 2) Make sure your ticket includes the audio guide!!!! 3) Prepaid tickets have a different entrance than those in line. Do not go stand in the long line if you have a ticket. 4) The permanent exhibition walks you through Picasso's life. I would suggest if you don't know much about Picasso to read up about his artist stages before you go: Rose, Blue and Cubist. The museum gives a lot of information but I can't remember if they touch upon why he went through those stages. 5) I'm not an art connoisseur so many of the paintings I had never seen before! So many when he was just a young boy. What a talented man! 6) I was highly annoyed because tourist were talking to loud in the museum. I can't remember if the Lourve was like this or even the museums in Italy, however it was just ridiculous how loud some people were and the staff does nothing about. 7) Wonderful and large gift shop. It's a small museum that doesn't contain his most famous period (presumably those are all sold to collectors) but it gives a good chronological timeline of his life and works that his wife donated after his death. In high season, make sure you get the timed ticket beforehand. In low season, I managed to waltz in without waiting in the free first Sunday of the month. But I also made sure I was there within 15 mins of opening. read more

Picasso was a passionate man. You can tell my the trails of people standing in awe at some of his... expressive works. I may have purchased several postcards showcasing some of his beautiful and scandalous and sigh-worthy pieces. What can I say: I like his style. Seeing the genesis of his art under one roof was an amazing experience. Initially we were braced for a 1-hour line, but were advised to simply buy our tickets online for the next available timeslot. Here's the thing: even if you stand in line to buy tickets, they won't be for immediate entry. One of the friendly staff advised me to buy them online, which we did. Plan your day around your entry time - easy peasy. We stopped by a tapas joint for lunch while we bought the tickets and waited for our time, 1.5 hours later. It was the perfect arrangement. You'll see his many art mediums, some treasured pieces, some early works. It's such a nice 2 hours worth of exploration. I realized no pictures were allowed after snapping one; that's all I've got for you. The gift shop was totally affordable; I got my reading buddy the cutest drawing book and cat bookmark. Obviously, this place is a Barcelona winner. It is really intriguing to see Picasso's growth through the many periods of his art. Of course, everyone wants to see his later works, but I found his early works the most interesting of all. These nude sketches are probably not what most people think of when they think of Picasso, but these line sketches really open your eyes into his journey as an artist. I suggest going on-line to get your tickets. You will avoid a 30-45 min wait for tickets and just have to show up for your reservation time. read more

Museu Picasso showcases the life & art of one of the world's best modern artists -- Picasso. Much of what I knew about Picasso was limited (blue period? red period?) prior to visiting the museum, and so coming to the museum helped to bridge some gaps. The good thing about the museum is that they give discounted admission to students and the elderly -- so it's a good deal if you're young or old. The museum is pretty small but it's jam-packed with Picasso's work from early childhood to his later years. What is most impressive is the museum includes lots of artwork that is not usually tied to the Picasso name such as his pottery work. I found his pottery work to be beautiful albeit eccentric. Modern art takes a great deal of effort to interpret, understand, and enjoy; coming to the Picasso museum enhanced my understanding and appreciation for modern art, especially that of Picasso's. Like Lyn P. mentioned, Picasso's renditions of Velazquez's "Las Meninas" definitely stood out and was one of my favorite collections in the entire museum. I loved the original Renaissance painting and it was definitely great to see Picasso's different versions of this classic piece. This museum is definitely worth it and a whole day should be spent here to look at, to try to figure out, and to admire Picasso's works. Picasso és un geni! read more

Museum itself was fine. Thought the layout was confusing. Our issue was that we thought we downloaded the audio tour but it stopped working shortly after the tour began. Wow, what an incredible museum on Picasso...I was already a fan of his work, but to see his development as an artist was really impressive. One oil painting depicts his sister's confirmation, which was created when he was 14 years old - and it's an incredible piece. The displayed pieces include this realist, blue-period and cubist pieces - all of which is amazing to see. One has the opportunity to really understand the artist as well as see the environments and experiences that influenced his art. There can be long lines depending on when you go - we went at the beginning of the day during the week and there was no line. This place is definitely well worth the visit. read more

Love love love this museum. Get your tickets online in advance. I went on a Thursday when it was free after 6pm. The surrounding area is truly wonderful and the building itself has a cool gothic vibe. The museum showcases a wide breadth of Picasso's lesser known works and even pottery. One gallery showcases his works inspired by other artists where Picasso copied their style. No pictures allowed in the galleries, but if you are a Picasso fan, this is a must see. I also spent way too much time and money in the gift shop which is also excellent. read more

If you are visiting Barcelona, the Museu Picasso is a must see! It is set in a very unique, intimate area (spread out across four or five large Spanish "mansions/palaces") in the middle of the city. The setting is beautiful, and the artwork on display is memorable. Despite what others stated, we had no lines and no trouble getting in, and arrived on a Saturday around 5pm. The total time walking slowly through the main exhibit was just over an hour, and the way it is laid out is informative...taking you chronologically through his work, and explaining (in writing and visually) how his work altered over time. The only hesitation I have with giving it a 5 (vs. a 4) was how limited the selection of pieces were, and how I felt they could have added more for the price of admission. It is great and worth seeing, but leaves you wanting a bit more. With that said, the pieces relating to his take on Valasquez's Las Meninas was outstanding. He produced a room full of pieces related to Las Meninas, which was quite fascinating. The museum is a great tribute to one of Spain's greatest artists. It is worth a visit! read more

It does however have a worthwhile collection of his earlier work that shows how his painting and other work evolved over time as he moved from traditional styles to his own style. This museum was actually pretty cool! So much so that I would visit again (when I'm in Barcelona again, I hope). I read a lot of reviews on how hard it may be to get tickets but we actually got them pretty easily (online). I visited Picasso museums in Barcelona, Paris, and Antibes and I would go to all of them again if I had the opportunity. If you like art or even if you're not an art enthusiast like myself, it's still worth it in my opinion. (I really like art, I just don't know much about it LOL) I don't know much about art but I think it's fair to say Picasso is pretty well known. It was cool seeing some of the artwork that I saw in history books and stuff. The museum is extreme clean and it's not overly crowded. The gift shop is very big with a lot of cool stuff. P.S. No pictures allowed and there's always a staff member in every room to make sure you don't take any pictures (hence no pictures) LOL. read more

This place is free Sundays after 3pm to everyone, and free anytime to students (they didn't check whether you were 18-25, either). You can be a student at any age, after all! Anyways, the lines were crazy. We waited for about an hour on a Tuesday morning. I thought this place opened at 10, but I think it's more like 9am (double check to make sure, though!). They said the best time to go was in the morning. I expected more, but it was really just one floor of artwork. It was nice to see Picasso's work and I guess all of his fans, though!! read more

Don't miss this. Free admission every first Sunday of the month and every Sunday from 3-7pm I went on a Sunday during the free hours and the line is long, but thankfully it was only about a 30 minute wait and at the front desk you receive a timed ticket. The tour is pretty self explanatory if you follow the map. You go through Picasso's early works, through his progression as an artist, and present time. As you view the work there are brief stories on Pablo. Allow an hour to completely view the entire museum. Also, they do not allow photos whatsoever. read more

I went here on my honeymoon in June 2018. It was my husband's idea to go, as I am not usually interested in art museums. I was so glad we ended up here. We opted for the audio tour guide which was extremely informative and made the experience more fun and interactive. The space itself was beautiful and had an amazing outdoor courtyard space (pic below-was not allowed to take pics inside). The inside works of Picasso were amazing and the rooms took you through his different periods. Beautiful way to end our time in Barcelona! read more

Picasso Museum is on a narrow and hard to find street in Barcelona. It looks like a castle and I believe it is. The admission is about $10 Euro for adults. It probably will take about 1 to 2 hours to finish looking at everything. We were not too impressed and were hoping for more of Picasso's works. There are a lot of his early and late works but not so many from his famous times. Also, they are very strict here because you cannot take any picture. If you have time, you should come check it out because it opens pretty late. Regardless of the limited selections, I would still recommend coming here. read more

We just flew into Barcelona on Friday morning and our hotel rooms weren't ready. I specifically booked our rooms close to the touristy spot and close to the Picasso museum. So what to do? Drop of your back and go check out Picasso. No lines for ticket. Yeah. You can't bring backpacks, water bottle or cameras. You have to stuff them into free lockers that they provide. Also, you need 1 euro to make the lock work but you get it back at the end. They also provide free wheelchairs. Anyways, great museum. I was used to Picasso abstract pictures but it had even more. Paintings and drawings that aren't abstract and they have it groups during different phases of Picasso life. Even saw Picasso's pottery. So many of his artwork. Amazing. Didn't realize how great his artwork was. So at the end is all his abstract drawing. Just loved it. In each room there are museum people standing and watching you. Just enjoy the beauty. Just a forewarning. The weekends are really busy. We walked by the museum on a Saturday afternoon and there was a line waiting to get in. So if your want to skip the lines then go on a weekday. At the end of the museum there's a nice gift shop. Once in a lifetime to see Picasso's artwork. Enjoy I sure did. read more

Easily one of the most prolific artists of all-time the opportunity to see "a Picasso" is almost ubiquitous at any noteworthy Modern Museum worldwide and although Museo Picasso is certainly worth exploring it is by no means the best representation of his work, the museum instead making its name off a collection of Juvenalia including early works from Art School and detailing the artists career through late life. Inexplicably prohibiting photos despite being an owned collection the whole feel of the museum is that of a 'private gallery' which is also sort of unfortunate compared to Miro Foundation and Barcelona's other top attractions. read more

You won't find the most popular pieces of Picasso here but you will find many early and late illustrations and a outline of the Picasso development timeline. I found the structure that the collection is housed in as fascinating as the art. The 5 medieval mansions that have been connected date back as early as the 13th century. Went came early Sunday AM during off season and had no noticeable crowd. read more

Crazy long line (best to visit in the morning), but it moves quickly, plus there's always 1-2 street vendors or musicians to keep you entertained while you wait. Free entry for all after 3 PM on Sundays, and free for all students anytime, which is cool. A musuem employee is always walking down the line outside to answer questions and can estimate your wait time. We moved through the rooms pretty quickly, but if you're a fan of Picasso, this will be a real treat for you. read more

We thought this museum was nice although we were not so impressed. We personally preferred the Prado museum in Madrid. We felt this art is much more subjective and abstract. So we think it's definitely a personal preference. I'm giving it three stars based on my appreciation of art. Other than that the museum itself is very nice and centrally located! Enjoy read more

I am the type of person who needs to visit an in depth museum like the Museu Picasso at least twice to feel like I have explored it completely. If you are like that, I have one tip for you on your visit to here and if you can visit it twice. Do your self a favor and buy the one year unlimited pass. It is the Museu Picasso Card that they sell to the residents here in Barcelona. It is less than buying two admission tickets. You will be able to skip the ticket que line and all of the wait lines. Buy it at Special ticket offices of Montcada 23. It looks more like a will call booth. They will take your picture and issue you the card immediately. I do not think you will even find this on-line, I forgot how stumbled on it. I am sure one of the docent told me. If you can't find it, just ask them to direct to the special tickets window. Don't go to the normal ticket line, go to another window. I will post a picture of it. They have an excellent free cloakroom where you can put your bags while you attend the museum. Very nice and secure. I found that it was very worth it and be sure to pick up audioguides. I like to enjoy the museum at a relaxed pace and I can get a little bored or overwhelmed with everything, that is why I like going back again with refreshed eyes. The museum is priceless! This review is from a visit to one of Barcelona's greatest museum on May 11, 2014 Seeing the pictures on yelp, I'm jealous (and shocked) that people were able to take pictures! During my visit, they had security all over looking to hunt down photographers taking stills of Picasso's art. Being a fanatic of art, I've always felt that Picasso's cubism was just a bit odd. However, after visiting this place - I was able to really appreciate his artistic skills. Especially after learning his skills not just as an artist, but also as a sculptor. The museum is huge. It's found within one of Barcelona's beautiful alleys where life just breathes beauty into each and every one of them. There was about a 15 minute wait, but you can find yourself getting really amped before going into the doors. I always bring my LSU ID with me and on this day - my student ID (geaux Tigers) pulled through once again. It is free for students. The museum takes you through his life, starting from the days of his young sketches, then to his blue and red periods, and then of course through his cubism days - of which most of his well known works are known for. I spent 5 hours here by myself, just truly enjoying every single sketch, painting, sculpture and quotes from Picasso himself. My favorite quote of his - one in which Steve Jobs himself has used a variation of numerous times when discussing Apple, is available at the ground level towards the end of the museum, "The bad artists imitate, the great artists steal." I would recommend this visit for those visiting Barcelona. There is a plethora of things to do in Barcelona. Many beautiful views and stops are recommended, but for those art fanatics, please do carry yourself over to this magical place. Bring your student ID! Regardless of where you're from. read more
