This review is from a visit to one of Barcelona's greatest museum on May 11, 2014 Seeing the pictures on yelp, I'm jealous (and shocked) that people were able to take pictures! During my visit, they had security all over looking to hunt down photographers taking stills of Picasso's art. Being a fanatic of art, I've always felt that Picasso's cubism was just a bit odd. However, after visiting this place - I was able to really appreciate his artistic skills. Especially after learning his skills not just as an artist, but also as a sculptor. The museum is huge. It's found within one of Barcelona's beautiful alleys where life just breathes beauty into each and every one of them. There was about a 15 minute wait, but you can find yourself getting really amped before going into the doors. I always bring my LSU ID with me and on this day - my student ID (geaux Tigers) pulled through once again. It is free for students. The museum takes you through his life, starting from the days of his young sketches, then to his blue and red periods, and then of course through his cubism days - of which most of his well known works are known for. I spent 5 hours here by myself, just truly enjoying every single sketch, painting, sculpture and quotes from Picasso himself. My favorite quote of his - one in which Steve Jobs himself has used a variation of numerous times when discussing Apple, is available at the ground level towards the end of the museum, "The bad artists imitate, the great artists steal." I would recommend this visit for those visiting Barcelona. There is a plethora of things to do in Barcelona. Many beautiful views and stops are recommended, but for those art fanatics, please do carry yourself over to this magical place. Bring your student ID! Regardless of where you're from. read more

The line to get in and buy tickets can be a bit long. I tried once but did not have enough tine to wait and view the museu. Two weeks later I got in line a lot earlier and have myself time to really wait and view the museu. I read a book in line while I waited. I went in the middle of July, so the line outside of the museu goes in and out of shaded areas, it can get rather hot in the sun. Very affordable. If you are spending slot of time in Europe or Barcelona there is a museu pass you can purchase that gives you access to all the museu in the area for a discounted rate. I work for a cruise line which is why I have been in European cities so frequently, I wish I had known about the pass before I went to the museu. I found out about it this day, but I only had about two weeks left of my contract at this point so it didn't make any sense for me to purchase the pass at the time. I bought a regular adminision ticket with audio guide. I used my college I'd for a student discount. I think it only cost me $11-$15. The museu layout progresses in chronological order beginning with Picasso's the wiliest work from childhood. I think his early years as a new artist were my favorite. Bc was hey we're so raw with a lot of imperfection, you could see pencil marks and erase marks, it really immersed you into seeing what the artists creativity and drawing process was. There is a newer section too of late in life works from when he lived in Cannes, including sculptures and works that appeared to be protest about the political parts of Spain. I knew before visiting the museu I only knew the most popular information about Picasso, but visiting the museu made me realize there is a lot I didn't know about him! He did a whole series of erotic nudes that were very surprising to me but I loved them! I love erotic work and artist interpretation, and Picasso definitely had unique interpretations. The museu gave me a really detailed look into the entirety of Picasso's career as a great artist. In fact, his most popular pieces (or the abstract pieces most of the world associates with the artist) weren't present in this particular museum, but they could be in his museu in Malaga Spain or in other art museums across the world. Again, I didn't do research before going, I just went. When I visited in July 2019 there were portions of the building under renovation, but it wasn't terrible. The renovations were well managed but they did take away some really cool selfie picture spots with the building bc they were covered up with tarp. The gift shop is nice as well. I collect Christmas ornaments from all of the countries and cities I visit. There was a Picasso Christmas ornament I was able to purchase. I also purchased several postcards of his work that I use as bookmarks. There are a lot of other merchandise options like T-shirts books magnets the whole 9 yards. read more

Loved the exhibition! The temporary photography exhibition was amazing as well and the overall selection of work is incredible. Many of Picasso's works that were chosen were an embodiment of the progressive shifts in his artistic style. From realism to abstract. I had an excellent time at the Picasso museum. It was so interesting, excellently organized, the descriptions were well written. I admittedly know nothing about art or Picasso, but the layout of the museum, and how the information was displayed made it easy to understand Picasso's study and growth as an artist. You are not allowed to take photos inside. The space is clean and well lit. I suggest getting here early. I arrived when it opened and about 40 minutes in, it was getting full. It's free every Sunday from 3-4 and the first Sunday of every month it's free all day. I still suggest getting there early. You need an hour and a half to see everything (unless you're an art fan. A very comprehensive collection of Picasso's work over his lifetime. The rooms are well organized such that you have a good understanding of the progression of his style and focus in different periods of his life rather than just the cubist style he is well known for at other art museums. I particularly loved the Las Meninas collection - so fun to imagine what was going through this artist's head! The space was also not too crowded and provided a good amount of seating in the middle of the building so it was easy to take the visit at one's own pace. read more

Definitely a go to spot when you are in Barcelona. Great for educational, relaxing and art observation purposes. Wait for the ticket is pretty Long and slow. So do get tickets in advance if you can to avoid unnecessary waiting. Alley walk to the museum is really pretty and street artists make it really fun. Years of Picasso's work is reserved in this museum more than anywhere around the world. If you are an artsy person, and want to explore all the important art exhibition when visiting Barcelona you can not miss it! The critical period of Picasso is exhibited with special exhibition. When we found out there was a Picasso museum in Barcelona, we decided to ditch the 2nd half of our tour and venture out on our own to find this place. It's tucked away in an alley or narrow street, but it's well worth looking for it. There are tons of his original works of art and it's organized into various stages of his life so you can see how his art developed over the years. We spent a few hours wandering around looking at all of the beautiful artwork. I took a ton of pictures but accidentally deleted them off my memory card thinking I had downloaded them to my computer. Some tips: Go early and on a weekday to avoid large groups or field trips...use your student Id and save $11 Euro, which is free. PROS - loved how this is tuck away in a neighborhood and didn't have that cold, sterile feeling of an echoing museum. The pieces were organized very well and the flow of paintings, drawings and sculptures through out Picasso's life was very overwhelming. a museum dedicated to the great pablo picasso! picasso was one of the most famous and influential spanish artists of the 20th century, as his works include paintings, ceramics, sculptures, and more. having read on yelp that the lines can be very long, we decided to come early, right around the time of opening, so that we wouldn't have to spend precious minutes waiting to purchase a ticket. adult admission was €11, less if you pre-booked online, and a bit more if you wanted to add the audio tour. the museum was actually created from five separate medieval palaces, and linked together to create one large complex with many connecting rooms. at the time we visited, several exhibition halls were under construction, so everyone was packed into the rooms that were open to visitors. although it felt very cramped at times, we were able to make our way from one room to the next, since the flow/ordering of the exhibits was easy to follow, admiring over 4000 works of art by senor picasso. being a 20th century artist, some of his works definitely looked very modern, very different from most styles and works that i observed in spain which were several centuries old! in total, we spent about two hours going through the entire museum, and about a half hour perusing the picasso-branded souvenirs at the bookstore/gift shop on the ground floor. we purchased a few things for friends back in the states since this would be one of the few places we could purchase special picasso items. this is a definite must see for anyone who is a picasso lover! if you know you'll be in barcelona on certain dates, definitely pre-book your tickets online to save time and money! read more

An amazing museum for anyone who appreciates art and Pablo Picasso. The collection is quite extensive ranging from his small postcard sized pencil/charcoal sketches and oil paintings on miniature canvas to more famous wall sized works such as "Jacqueline" or "Las Meninas." I particularly enjoyed his self portraits and of his mother. The ceramic works are very interesting to see. Tickets can sell out on weekends so buy online in advance. I was surprised at how much I loved it as a huge fan of French impressionist painters - Monet, Renoir and Surat. Picasso was definitely a unique genius. read more

Super-interesting Catalan retrospective on Picasso.....showcasing the artist's life in the Barrio & how he grew & evolved his painting "niche". They had early works from when he was 14 & 15 yrs old & already winning awards & we were blown away that he could truly paint in ANY style - realism, impressionistic, cubist, etc..... he did it all & he did it well!! Be sure to get your tickets in advance & note they will NOT let you inside at any other time. Mr & I tried to enter 1 hr early & were turned away.....and scolded for even attempting to visit at our non-appointed time. We also tried taking advantage of their Free Sunday Afternoon option but then so did 95% of everyone else in Barcelona & the lines were outrageous - well worth the paid price to not have to waste time standing in line for hours.....too much of Barcelona to see read more

If you crave Picasso-- this is the museum for you. Some lesser seen works and it steps through the history of his life. A few more well know works and a lot of variations of that work. Very interesting. Currently the special exhibition is Dali and Picasso a comparison. I'm a Dali lover so I had already seen this at the Dali museum in the States. It's the same exhibition. Oh well. However- if you haven't seen it, it's worth seeing how two different men can interpret the same work. Very mind bending. The building itself if interesting as you wind through the exhibits. Great building. Now find this museum is a little challenging. It's in an alleyway. There are a few signs but not enough. Keep looking or ask around. It can be worth it!! read more

This was a very small museum featuring a lot of Picasso's early works and not as much from his cubist phase. They do have a small area dedicated to his blue period, though. It's organized somewhat chronologically, which gives you a refreshing perspective into his personal journey and progress as an artist. It took me about 1.5 to walk through it as an art newb. (On an unrelated note... I AM still trying to figure out the name of the restaurant nearby with an outdoor patio that I stopped at right after for their fresh seafood platter and pitcher of sangria. I love this little museum. What you have is a glimpse at the evolution of Picasso's career throughout his lifetime - featuring childhood works all the way through to late in his life. Do you get the big blockbuster paintings that we all know? Not quite. Those are all at major museums around the world. You won't see much of the analytic cubism of those days with George Braque... But what you do get here, which you wouldn't find anywhere else is his study of Diego Velazquez's "Las Meninas". Picasso sampled from Velazquez, reinterpreted a masterpiece - then focused on different details and aspects of the work. If the space isn't too crowded, you can go back and forth from one detail, back to the big study - then back to another detail for closer inspection... or is that just me? Maybe if I knew a little more about the setting - what is that building??? it's freaking amazing... I'm almost as much in awe about the building as I am with what's contained therein. Well, as I am a total museum junkie, I'm sure I'll be back again, seeing as I've been there 3 times and still enjoy going. Note: 1st sunday of the month you get FREE admission... and i think maybe after 5? not sure about that last part. I'm all about supporting the arts - especially for up & coming artist, but free is free. read more

We happened to be in Barcelona on a Sunday so thought we would save some money by taking advantage of their Sunday free admission price from 3-7PM. It's not a huge museum so we expected to finish what we had to do within the 4 hours allotted (in actuality, we officially spent just over 2 hours there). We got in line at 2:45pm and was told that we would have to wait 1.5 hours! Our wait ended up only being about 30-40 minutes so I'm not quite sure how the staff person overestimated so high. I thought they only let a certain amount of people in every 15 minutes but they somehow miscalculated quite a bit. It was fascinating to see so many examples of Picasso artwork from his younger years from as young as around 14 years old. In addition to all his paintings, there were some examples of his ceramic artwork which I was completely unaware of. As you enter the top level, you're immediately brought to an exhibit where it featured the most recent photographs of Picasso from his later years in life from a longtime friend who photographed their interactions. I'm not sure that was a permanent exhibit but it was nice to put a face to the famous name. I would totally pay the normal admission price but if you time your day right, you can save some Euros and see this museum after after you get some lunch at the nearby Mercat Princesa. read more

Gratis para los maestros / free for teachers which was not true of most of the museums about town, although there was usually a small discount. If you're looking to find Picasso's most famous works, they're not here. However, the museum itself is beautiful, there is a LOT of his earlier works, including some pieces from his blue period, and, at least when we went, the temporary exhibit, Feasting on Picasso 1900-1907 was wonderful. We even saw a pretty well known Van Gogh painting! I would have probably rated this museum a four star, but for the free entry and the fact that it was literally around the place from our house and in a great little neighborhood. This is a beautiful museum. We were lucky to be able to go on a Sunday, and timed ourselves perfectly so that we reached the ticket desk right after 15:00, making our tickets free. We still had to wait 20 minutes for our allotted time, and we looked around for the temporary exhibition but it was closed off. Once we got in, we were extremely excited by the wealth of paintings that were included in the museum. None of his very famous works, but the rooms were filled with paintings that traced his evolution as an artist- sketches, paintings, sculptures, and so on. I was shocked by the quality of the work Picasso produced as a young teenager. I was glad to see that the exhibit had paintings from my personal favourite, his Blue Period. After, we even went in search of his old hangout, Quatre Gats, to see if they still used the menu he designed. The only downside is that the museum is extremely strict about the ban on photography in the exhibit, which is understandable but sad. Yes, we can buy postcards and souvenirs in the gift shop, but they're so expensive! Either way, an excellent idea for a Sunday afternoon. read more

Museu Picasso is for art nerds only. If you get a kick out of seeing an artist's process, their influences, and where they started, that's what you'll get here. But if you're the kind of person who gets disappointed at a concert when a band you barely know won't play their hits, stick to seeing Picasso in the big museums. These are some serious B-side tracks here. I could barely contain myself when we stepped into the room of Picasso's interpretations of Velázquez's Las Meninas. There are over 50 paintings in which he reimagines the masterpiece, seeing it all through his particular lens. And then he goes and reinterprets El Greco's work and I nearly lose my mind, I'm so excited. It got REAL nerdy in here, let me tell you. But if you're not a nerd, there is definitely one thing you can learn and take away with you - Picasso was a child genius and could've painted any classical master under the table. He knew all the rules, and then he broke them, becoming the legend we know today. read more

LOVED! My artist cousin told me that he was not impressed and that I could skip the Museu Picasso, but I have to say ,it was wonderful. To see how his art evolved over the years was amazing. He spent a lot of time in Barcelona and created gorgeous art in this fantastic city. Many of the paintings and prints were donated by his best friend. Strangely enough, I left Museu Picasso feeling like I missed something...there was an almost anti-climactic quality to the whole experience. What you do get is the most amazing and personal look at Picasso's formative years. There are sketches and paintings from his youth, which were just amazing for the simple fact that his artistic talent showed at such an early age. There are some amazing works from the Blue years, and some of his pottery and crafts that you can't really see anywhere else. I noticed that the collections is missing a huge period of time, which was rather disappointing. However, the works they do have more than make up for it. read more

The last time I saw a queue this long was when a tv show had a public casting in San Francisco. Important piece of knowledge that the internet doesn't share with you: You can stand in line as long as you want, the amount of tickets they give out is highly limited - especially on the free Sunday. Arriving 30 minutes after they open will not get you inside, most people arrive 2 hours prior to the opening and wait. But, on a bright side, there's a cute little café in the patio near the entrance that serves great and cheap espresso. So go drown your sorrow in caffein & try again next week! read more

I highly recommend coming to Museu Picasso, especially if you are in Barcelona and love Picasso's work. What I love about this Museum is that it is a little hidden from the main touristy path. It is very easy to walk right by it, but once you find it, you see how beautiful and less touristy this part of town is, especially in comparison to the Las Ramblas area. My friend Kat and I came, and unfortunately we wouldn't be there for the first Sunday of the month so we weren't able to take advantage of the free admission- however it wasn't that expensive anyway, something like only €5 per person. The line wasn't too bad and we were able to get in within 10 minutes after paying. If you have any water, make sure to put it away or make use of the free lockers located to the right after you pick up your museum maps. After you have all that settled, let your art adventure begin! The museum allows you to explore Picasso's work, from his earliest works as an art student, and then the more recognizable colorful pieces. They also have an area dedicated to his self portraits and his blue period. This is a must come when coming to Barcelona, I am glad I was able to check out this Picasso Museum located in his home country, especially after seeing the one in Paris. Although I enjoyed the one in Paris as well, this one has a much homier feel, and allows you to explore the more intimate side of Picasso's work. *No photos allowed* read more

I've been wanting to come year since I was a child. As an art lovers my self I've been excited just a chance to come to Spain and experience everything in person. I didn't know going to this museum I'd lose interest in this remarkable artist. The staff is beyond rude. We walked on and before we did anything they shush shushed us. The art pieces were mismatched and not in order. Idk why we payed extra for a guide tour when they just have us headphones and told us to go at it alone. They made us pay to have them hold our waters in a locker. I took one photo of the outside of the building and got yelled at and followed around my whole stay as if I was a common criminal. His early work as a teen was quite interesting to us, but his later works leave us questioning what we're not seeing in him. This museum was a little different than all the other museums that I have been to. First of all, it's tucked away in a narrow alleyway, that if you don't walk with your head up, you will probably walk right past it. There's a small unassuming plaque on the wall at head level with the name of the museum. It blends into the street and it's not what I expected for a museum for THE Picasso. Secondly, BUY YOUR TICKETS ONLINE IN ADVANCE. The super long line down the alley was what made me suspect we were at the right place. We were in line for about 20 minutes before reaching the ticket office inside--and we were lucky. We decided to go with tickets to the collection and the temporary collection, which was Salvador Dali at the time, which was 14 euros per ticket. Thirdly, NO PICTURES. Just lock all your stuff away in the lockers provided because they do not allow pictures in the museum. This museum was a little different than all the other museums that I have been to. Each room is set up chronologically, and has a long description on the wall describing the current time period of Picasso's life, and what to look for. What I didn't know about Picasso was that he actually painted "normal" traditional works. And as you progressed through the museum, you see how each phase of his life changed drastically and you start to recognize the more "Picasso" works of art towards the end of the tour. read more

This was a fantastic museum experience. For years, nothing has come close to the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, but this came pretty darn close! I visited on Sunday mid-morning and admission turned out to be free. SCORE! I was perfectly content to pay the admission, but were admitted gratis (didn't get the reason why). I had planned on paying the €3 for the audio guide as others had stated that it added a lot of value. The woman at the ticket counter provided me with my ticket to pick up the audio set in another room. Once I had that in hand, I was off to explore Picasso's world here in Barcelona. The museum was organized by time period and some rooms had specific themes. One of the first works you see is his Science and Charity, painted when Picasso was quite young. It's an excellent depiction of a serious subject matter, which is more impressive when you realize how young he was when he painted it. The audio guide does a particularly good job at pointing facts like this out. The museum, along with the audio guide, does a wonderful job at showing the progression of his style. Many of his early works feel far more traditional, while his later works embody the cubist style that he became so famous for. A particularly interesting room was his interpretation of Las Meninas by Velázquez. He painted several of the characters from the original painting as standalone works. It appears that museum is consistently holding temporary exhibits as well, which were included in the general admission. Two were on display during my visit. One chronicled the creation of the museum as it celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2013. The founder of the museum, a close friend and advocate of Picasso, is highlighted in detail. The second exhibit displayed some of the ceramic work that Picasso did later in his life. I didn't rush through it, but for time estimates I spent about 2 hours in the museum. I did make a quick stop in the gift shop, which I would describe as average. To enter, I waited about 20 minutes in line, perhaps because it was widely known to be free that day. The space that the museum is in is art in and of itself, what appears to be a converted mansion. To me, this is a must see when visiting Barcelona. read more

A lot of Picasso's early work was inspired by a lot of sights and scenes of Barcelona. It was really amazing to see how he perceived and interpreted many images of day to day life in Barcelona. Also incredible to recognize his inspiration for early work after having seen and experienced Barcelona for myself. Most of the collection was stuff he painted in Barcelona and Paris so the collection wasn't complete. Mainly there was a gap between when he was 20 and 35 where his style changed drastically. 4 stars instead of 5 because I really wish I could have seen the evolution. Give yourself at least 2 hours. Maybe grab a coffee before you come too because they don't have a cafe here. read more

When I was growing up, I used to take art classes a lot as I really enjoyed drawing and painting and the people I respected tended to be have realistic styles such as the renaissance artists or Bob Ross (you know, the guy with the afro on PBS). Pablo Picasso's work made absolutely no sense to me and I didn't get the appeal. Since then, my tastes have evolved and coming here actually helps one appreciate his talent even more. This museum showcases his early stages as an artist mostly up to his formative years in Barcelona and you see his evolution as an artist. He had the ability to portray realism, but as the world changed around him, the changes in his art reflected new influences and breaking conventions as he sought other ways to express himself. The building itself is on the Carrer de Montcada - apparently Barcelona's baller avenue back in the day - in the El Born neighborhood. It's definitely worth the price of admission and there's also some good eats and shopping nearby for before or afterwards. read more

Everything about this museum is top notch and not to be missed. It's a given that this is the largest collection of Picasso work in the world - but until you've been there, it might be hard to imagine just how large and diverse that collection is. It's phenomenal. The building itself is interesting from the outside - I particularly liked the inner courtyard and outside staircase, but the inside is typical white wall museum. Wonderful gift shop for those of us who can't pass up the opportunity to buy yet another box of stationary or art themed bookmark. Great for kids, groups, tourists, art lovers... everyone. read more

Tips: The audioguide very useful, although its numbering system harder to follow throughout museum exhibits than it should be; they should fix that. Picasso paintings are wonderful! I truly enjoyed all the information the museum taught you about the artist, his background and collaborations and inspirations! I minuses some stars because I got lost, the map is confusing and I payed for a special expo but couldn't find it. Or I found it but no one check my ticked to verify that I payed extra for it! A better map and explanation and arrows to go in order of date would be better! But in all I learned a lot and found a lot of inspiration! read more

I think this museum does play an interesting role in showcasing a part of Picasso's earlier life that is often neglected or spoken less of in other venues, but at the same time, one can't help but feel like this was the result of having all his better known works displayed at much larger venues elsewhere. Learning about what Picasso achieved in his earlier years does help to "complete" a better understanding of his life and path, but I did feel almost let down to get to a certain point where I then wanted to see his works blossom into what he is best known for, but then not be given that satisfaction. Having a complete display of his works emulating "La Meninas" was a delight to see, but again, felt anti-climatic, knowing the extent and breadth of his works that exists. Overall, I think the museum is worth a brief visit, mostly to garner a better understanding of Picasso as a whole. However, we went just over an hour before closing and had ample time to leisurely explore the museum in its entirety. I've seen the line grow to endless lengths in the mornings, and my advice to you is that if that is the line you see, just turn around, go see something else, and come back later in the day. The museum is worth seeing, but not worth seeing THAT badly. read more

Pablo Picasso's a bit like marmite, most people either love or hate his work. It took me to discover the Artist's history, life and aims before fully appreciating the art. A prolific, seminal creator who's credited with influencing the course of art history and there's a huge body of his work in this Barcelona museum.  I didn't initially want to queue up and pay in to visit Museu Picasso. However my friend insisted, so we did and I'm glad, as it was marvellous. The art's arranged chronologically starting from his talented childhood when Picasso painted in a realistic style and flows through his Blue, Rose, African and Cubist periods. There are originals here and also copies as Picasso's art is scattered around the world. It's a busy museum but well laid out and easy to navigate. I'd advise anyone who visits Madrid to go to Museu Picasso but I would recommend reading a little bit about Picasso first. It requires an understanding of what he was trying to achieve to fully appreciate his art. Then have walk through this museum-gallery. Once you apprehend, you'll stand in front of Picasso's 'Guernica' and possibly think it one of the greatest, most brutal and emotive pieces of art ever created. Following this, go and visit the Museo Reina Sofia to see the real thing in the flesh. Although, if you don't do any research before going to Museu Picasso you'll still probably come away with a greater admiration, respect and appreciation of the Artist. Really great museum. Has numerous works by Picasso including sketches. He really has a great sense of humor. We bought tickets online the day before but I don't that is necessary if you plan to go in the morning. No cameras or bags! There are lockers where you pay 50 cents? to hold your jackets and whatnot. Overall, it was nice but as most mentioned, they don't have all his works here. read more
