Gabe DeLeon wowed me at the DeYoung last Sunday! He led an amazing, interactive tour that felt more like a cool, experiential performance piece or art school class. I don't want to give any of his secrets away, but I will say that I have never been more engaged or mind-blown while experiencing visual art at a museum. I learned so much more about the pieces than I would have from walking around by myself, reading or not reading the plaques. I learned about the artists, the meaning behind the pieces, the social commentary, the context. Gave was hilarious, engaging and so sweet. He made something that could be corny very sincere and cool. Terrible! Tour guide was more of a quirky, annoying fool who was distracting us from actually enjoying a fabulous museum by his childish, scripted, overly self-personalized "act". UGH. Both guides carried identical, printed, burlap bags with the words........ MUSEUMS ARE F------G AWESOME. (!!!!!) Seriously, have we as a culture stooped to something so low? For goodness sake, this wasn't a hipster event, it was a weekday morning with children throughout the museum. Despite the waste of time, I was embarrassed to be around the guides. read more

The Badass Bitches tour led by Casey and Kate this past summer was one of the most enjoyable times I've had in a museum! If you're into women's history and empowerment, this is the tour for you. I learned stories behind art in the de Young that I would have otherwise overlooked. Our tour guides provided in depth analysis over not only women as subjects of art, but women as creators and the struggles that connect us throughout time and distance. One of my favorite parts was learning the true history behind Samson and Delilah that was conspicuously absent from my Christian education. Gabe was my guide through the De Young Museum and I would do it again in a heartbeat. The whole Museum Hack concept is clever, but execution is key. During my visit we were challenged (softly, more like motivated) to engage not only with each other as a group but with the art. To look at the art in ways we haven't before, to create and tell stories, to connect it to our lives and our own sensibilities. Having a knowledgeable and endearing tour guide made this process fun and easy. I say this as someone who isn't always comfortable collaborating in groups or stepping outside of myself.
