The instructor was easygoing yet skilled, made instructions easy to understand, encouraged exploration and de-emphasized perfectionism, and gave customized tips based on the variety of experience levels among all participants. The whole experience was so fun! If a class series became available, then I'd enroll in it in a heartbeat! Just took their vegan baking class and had a great experience. The class was really fun and educational. Our instructor, Cassandra, was very friendly and knowledgeable. I appreciate her showing us how to make the recipes with and without fancy equipment. The group of people in the class were all very friendly and helpful. The signage from the entrance of the building to the class was great. The kitchen was very clean and spacious. What a wonderful Valentine's night, whether with a friend or with a partner! The teachers, organization and space were great! Shana was amazing! She made it fun and made it all seem easy, even though we know there was a lot of prep involved before we even showed up. We each got to participate and learn as we made 4 different dishes. I have coordinated two team builds at HoG. The first was 4 years ago for 50+ guests. We had the "strolling meal" which worked out perfectly for our group as we wanted to keep the energy high. It was a hit! We had a competition and our chefs were fun and took our competition seriously. Our guests talked about it for days. Today I returned for a smaller team build for 11 guests. Because it was a smaller group we had a seated meal. Our chefs were engaged and very knowledgeable. It was a beautiful day and our guests were very happy, we really needed this. I am 100% confident with HoG. They do an excellent job of accommodating allergens and dietary restrictions. They are also very fast with their communication which I appreciate, especially for this most recent team build as we had less than 1 week notice! read more

The instructor gave great insight and information, and it was very helpful to actually see and experience cake decorating in person. 2.5 hour class, and an 8 inch decorated cake to bring home! We had a wonderful time for our team event (15 people) at Hands On Gourmet. THE EXPERIENCE // We did the event at their onsite location, which is a large 4th floor space in SF Dogpatch with amazing views of the Bay. Half of the room is taken up by the kitchen and prep tables, and the other half had a long table set up next to the windows where we happily ate the meal we'd helped make earlier. The entire event was three hours for us - the first two hours were a mix of cooking and chatting with each other, and the last hour was all eating and more chatting. We were split up into three groups, each group led by one of their professional chefs who guided us through what to do (mostly simple, digestible tasks like chopping ingredients, mixing things, assembling and cooking - which allowed us to chat with each other at the same time), answered all of our cooking-related questions, and imparted their cooking wisdom. The chefs were all wonderful and very helpful. (Shoutout to Chef Irene!) I don't think of myself as a good cook, but the tasks we had were very doable and we were led through the steps as much as we needed. I was quite proud and impressed at what we made by the end (with the chefs' help of course). I also appreciated the flexibility in being able to move around to different groups and that the chefs took over the cooking by the end - some people continued to help more with cooking, while others gravitated towards the wine and cheese board on the side and caught up with each other. There was no pressure to do just one or the other, which was nice. THE FOOD // You get to pick which multi-course menu you want to cook from several options. We opted for the Italian menu, which was delicious! Highlights: + Arancini stuffed with mozzarella: the saffron risotto was already prepped for us since it would take more time, so we helped stuff them with cheese, bread them, and then deep fried them. We also made a delicious tomato dipping sauce. + Tuna crudo: so refreshing! We nomm'ed on this and the arancini as we continued to cook the other items + Hand-rolled pappardelle pasta with peas, pancetta, and tomatoes: we got to bring back some of the freshly-made pasta dough to cook more pasta at home too. + Lemon zest olive oil almond cake with freshly made whipped cream and berries: loved that they put some yogurt into the whipped cream, which gave it a nice tangy flavor OVERALL // This was a fantastic experience! Everything was well-organized, both casual and professional, and the food and space were great. To top it all off, I was delighted that we got to keep our nice aprons at the end. My guests were greeted with beverages and charcuterie board and allowed to mingle while chefs did final preparations. We went to separate stations to prepare the different components of our menu. The 3 chefs, Darren, Paloma, and Shana were awesome and very patient with the "cooks". Everything was well paced and the food was delicious. They helped us coordinate alcohol delivery and had such a beautiful set up for us when we arrived, along with a lovely charcuterie. We had a company event there last night. The space is beautiful! The chefs were amazing and very informative. Our group had a wide variety of chef skills and they were very accommodating to everyone depending on the skill set. We had such a fun time and the food was delicious! They were very patient with our group, we ended up being about 10 minutes late (thanks to a Warriors game) and we were having such a good time that we might have stayed a bit later then a usual group. I wish I could give two extra stars. Our company booked an event at Hands On Gourmet recently, and we had an phenomenal time. We all work remotely, and only get together every 6 months, so we have a great deal of bonding to do whenever we get the rare opportunity to do so. This event brought our team together in a way that was truly meaningful, authentic and fun. They spare no expense. the kitchen was very well staffed, and there was a knowledgeable and welcoming chef at every station. They were all super unpretentious, unassuming, friendly and fun. All of the ingredients were prepped in advance (with a few exceptions), and the chef's explained each ingredient and it's purpose in each dish. On top of that, the recipes (and consequently, the food) was unbelievably delicious (do the Moroccan menu). Not everyone loves to cook, but even our less than enthusiastic team members were coming up to me and saying, "I didn't think this was going to be fun, but I had a GREAT time." So much more than 5 stars! I hosted my husbands 40th birthday celebration at Hands on Gourmet. I had learned about them having participated in two networking events and saw how wonderful this could be for clients and wanted to share the experience with our closest friends and family. First of all the space is spectacular. Gorgeous views of the river and large windows bring in so much fresh air and light. The kitchen is very spacious with a beautiful long dining table that we used for our dinner. I love that space can feel great with 10 people or 50 people. We had a small group of 10 people to cook a Spanish inspired meal. Mind you, each menu option was really exceptional! But for this event, I had always wanted to learn how to cook a perfect Paella and that was achieved. Even with a smaller group, we spent about an hour cooking and we had a chef at each station walking us through and educating us on what we were cooking but also valuable little things like - how to fix too much salt, or not enough flavor. Once appetizers were finished we could walk around and share while the others finished the entree and desserts. Everything was incredibly tasty and all the ingredients were freshly sourced. Once everyone has worked together to create this fabulous meal, we sat and ate, drank wine and enjoyed. The staff worked hard to clean up everything and get the kitchen back in order and we had extras that we could take home. I can't express what a memorable evening it was and how wonderful the space and experience was for us. I had a great time with Hands On Gourmet for our company outing! I've always wanted to do a cooking class and they really delivered each and every step of the way. They're extremely meticulous when it comes to dietary allergies and restrictions so that when the menu was decided, there was something for everyone to eat! Our group of 20ish was split into different teams to cover either an appetizer, entree or dessert. The chef that headed our group, Sammy Jo (?), was so helpful and knowledgeable in that she made sure we understood everything that went into the food and preparation! The entire staff made the entire process extremely efficient, but not to the point where we felt like we weren't really doing any of the cooking. We went with a Thai inspired menu but Hands On has a ton of different offerings for other cuisines. I was a fan of pretty much everything except the dessert (coconut chiffon cake), but I loved how I got to see everything from start to finish! I'd highly recommend this as a team building event, a private party or just for fun! I was fortunate enough to visit Hands on Gourmet for a company holiday party. I liked having wine and mingling prior to starting. I enjoyed them breaking us up into different groups. I was on the Paella group while others did ham croquettes, ricotta donuts, crab cakes etc. You break into a small group and a very friendly and knowledgeable chef will give you instructions on prepping the food, temperature etc. Once a group is done prepping they go around and serve their dish to the rest of the group. It's a great way to learn about cooking and mingle with coworkers. I mingled with the guys in the back washing dishes and they were super nice to me as well. Everyone I encountered was friendly and knowledgeable. It's a bit on the expensive side (disclaimer: I was a guest of the company so I did not pay) but if this is something that appeals to you it is well worth the money. read more

This was the best offsite I have planned for my team - hands on. + cheese, crackers, non-alcoholic drinks as openers (we brought our own wine cuz no corkage fee) + we split up in 3 groups that we were randomly assigned + beautiful view of the water w/ spacious windows & light + helpful and kind instructors + beautiful set up of the food and dining table + got to keep our aprons We had a huge blast and loved how we got to try our hand in the kitchen, as well as learn some new cooking techniques for the Italian menu. There were absolutely no bumps in the road; everything went so well. I know it's difficult herding 12 techies around in a kitchen, but the 3 instructors did such a great job. I couldn't have been happier with everything--from the set up, the flow of everything, the helpfulness of the culinary instructors, etc. I will definitely be bringing my team back and recommending others to come here. After wrapping up another eventful day and working up an appetite, my company and I headed south of Market for a lesson in cooking and team work. While the idea of cooking for each other seemed a bit questionable, we were pleasantly surprised in more ways than one. Located in the Dogpatch, a once gritty working-class neighborhood turned hip hangout spot, Hands On Gourmet awaited us on the fourth floor of an unnamed building down a long, empty hallway. All skepticism melted away the moment we stepped foot into the expansive, brightly lit kitchen. Smiles spread from ear to ear as we hung our coats and huddled around a stainless steel table stacked with cheese, crackers, wine and beer...lots of beer. After making ourselves at home, the chefs welcomed us and offered an overview of what we would be making: a complete Peruvian meal. We were divided into four groups, each with a respective chef and dish to prepare. Team 1: Appetizers galore! Ceviche de Mariscos and Chicken Empanadas Team 2: Corn souffle and ensalada Limena Team 3: Beef a la Plancha, Papas a la Huancaina (my team!) Came here for a team offsite and it was such a fun & delicious time! Our cooking category was Italian food, and the chefs were able to help us cook up a storm! There were plentiful of homemade Bruschettas, Pasta, Meatballs, and of course Tiramisu! It was a great time and our team really enjoyed interacting with the chefs and helping around in the kitchen (while eating a majority of the time of course). I also wanted to give a shout out to the amazing staff at Hands On Gourmet who were really helpful, attentive, and just had an overall positive attitude. My favorite white sweater was spilled on with red wine (drenched in red wine to be exact). The staff worked hard to fix my sweater and spent a lot of time cleaning it with Soda Water and Bleaching it. They really went above and beyond to revive it and I really appreciate their efforts. They were also able to get me another shirt since I didn't have anything else to wear. Their efforts really didn't go unnoticed and I really appreciate everything they've done for me! Overall, Hands On Gourmet was the best team offsite my team and I have done so far. HOG is a fun and unique experience that's loved by both cooking enthusiasts and non-enthusiasts alike. I came here with our team of 14 last week and I can honestly say that amongst our very diverse group - every single person walked out of there with an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and excitment. I've tried other cooking classes before and HOG is leaps and bounds better than the rest. Their chefs (all friendly, helpful and extremely talented), the venue, the wine and cheese that's served while you prepare the meal, and of course the food (all of the highest quality and seasonaly fresh ingredients) are what makes this such an incredible experience. These guys are awesome. I had the privilege of working with Hands on Gourmet at a company team building outing. My coworkers and I arrived at Mission Rock and were warmly greeted by HOG staff. They each introduced themselves and gave us an overview of each dish we were going to be cooking that day - the cuisine was asian fusion. We split into teams led by one of the cooks, we were given a job to do, and then we got our hands dirty. I opted to make two of my favorite dishes - ahi tuna and Vietnamese shrimp spring rolls. The chefs taught me how to properly pepper and sear the tuna, and how to stugg and tightly wrap the spring rolls. The chefs were around to oversee our work and give guidance as needed. They had really upbeat attitudes and were fun and easy to work with. As the cooking session progressed, we shifted around to help in other areas of the kitchen as needed. Within less than an hour, we had prepared a full meal - appetizers, entree and desserts. My coworkers and I were proud of the work we had done, and we had a great time doing it. And yes, the food was fantastic! *pats self on back* I highly recommend HOG. They travel to your kitchen so you can bring the cooking lesson to wherever you are. (Thanks Geoff!) It turned out that he was right about the knives, open flames, and possible stains. We did, however, get aprons, which was good for avoiding the possible stains! All joking aside, HOG was awesome! It was a unique way for our team of yelployees to get to know one another and do something different. Our group of approximately 35 (with help from the HOG staff) cooked an incredible meal last night. It was a Peruvian menu including a salad, ceviche, empanadas, corn casserole, beef a la plancha, chocolate mousse, and cookies. I was on the team that made the salad and it was one of the tastiest salads I've had. We used jicama, peppers, corn, avocado, papaya, and butter lettuce. Since this was one of the easiest courses, we drank a lot of wine as we prepared and we were able to walk around a bit and socialize as well... HOG provided us with perfectly prepared pardon peppers (say that five times fast), olives, cheese and crackers to nosh on while we cooked as well. The best part was when we were all seated and served our culinary creations. I ate way too much but enjoyed every bite. The company wasn't bad either. I left HOG with a new apron, a ton of new recipes, and really fun memories of our evening. Thanks Hands On Gourmet, this was an awesome experience! I have been to a number of different cooking events in the name of team building and I must say Hands On Gourmet was the best yet. Most of these cooking events are more formal, involves people talking at you instead of people talking to you, and you always feel somewhat inadequate because you don't really learn to cook or allow for any creativity. Plus you're pretty much hungry until the end! I love Hands On Gourmet's idea where you bring your own alcoholic beverages, and then drink while you get started on the food. Although there are stations, you are pretty much free to mill about on other people's stations, and do other things instead of being only limited to your own station. The appetizer station was the best, they started making the appetizers and then after that they passed it around! This meant you could eat and not be starving while you make your main meal. This really is how cooking goes anyway. Not only that, they had pizza. This was the BEST. IDEA. EVER. They had pizza doughs for everyone to customize with all kinds of ingredients and sauces ... which meant you were free to be obnoxious with your own pizza. I had meats, sauce, cheese on mine ... and then layered on another meats sauces and cheeses layer... and then cracked an egg! HA ... yes it was random and weird but totally delicious. I was pretty full after the appetizer ... not going to lie ... but then was the entree. The entrees were delicious, but I think I totally bypassed them in favor of dessert. I saw how they made it, cold butter crumbles into flour and vanilla beans infused sugar. Doesn't that just make you drool? We had some delicious fruit tarts and home made donuts with the most cholesterol (oh but isn't that the point?!) rich sauce, ever. Needless to say, it was awesome, I'd recommend this place to anyone. read more

This review is long overdue.. We had our company holiday party here a couple of years ago and we all had a blast. First you pick the type of cuisine, which we selected Moroccan. Then, you're broken out into teams to work on the appetizer, main course, and dessert. The instructors are great, providing tips and training for lifelong skills. The kitchen is enviable, with a fully stocked pantry and refrigerator, and all of the equipment and gadgets you could imagine. The staff also chronicles the whole event via photos, so you can re-live the experience months and years later. You also get access to the recipes of the meal you feasted on. We all had a great time, bonding over food and enjoying each other's company. Highly recommend HOG for any team building, corporate, or casual event. Two enthusiastic thumlbs up! read more

We all left happy, stuffed, and with some incriminating photos..haha. Great food! The Chefs were so patient with all of the noobie cookes in the group. We had fruit tarts, green papaya salad, satay, ceviche, meatballs, sushi, and the list goes on and on. My team (Team Thailand) has Drew as our Chef and he was so nice and such a good sport about our random shenanigans...Loved working with him. FANTASTIC for groups and corporate events. It is slightly out of the way if you work in Downtown Fi-Di, but it is right off Muni so make sure you leave with plenty of time to spare in case you get on the wrong bus. Not that great for street parking as you would expect, but if you circle around a few times you're bound to find something. I would still suggest a taxi or taking the muni over driving. Stephen (Head Chef) was extremely accommodating and helped me plan the entire menu and kept me calm! For my party of 20, there was a total of 4 professional chefs and we were split into 4 groups to prepare some real extravagant meals: tuna nicoise, baja fish tacos, steak au poivre, pesto, strawberry rhubarb tarts, pistachio cannolis, and some unforgettable chocolate pot d'creme. The price for private parties depends on your group size, but personally it was extremely worth it: free facility, plenty of parking, free cheese platter, free non-alcoholic drinks, free aprons, free pictures, 3 hour event, no dish clean up and BYOB. We had Hands On do a cooking class for everyone the day before our wedding, and it was SO MUCH FUN that we were very literally, quite seriously, I'm-not-kidding wondering if the wedding itself would seem pale by comparison. (Luckily our wedding rocked, too: have yours at Nestldown.) People are STILL talking about how fun the cooking class was, and it's December now. Tips: we had it at Byington winery, outside Los Gatos, which is gorgeous, and we served their wines which makes everything more fun. It was hot on the terrace in July, so make sure your guests know about the air-conditioned wine room for when they need a break. The cupcake-recipe table was perfect for the 4-year-old crowd (no knives!), and it was worth paying for them because they were SO cute and had a blast. The grownups were allowed to learn if they were so inclined or drink and schmooze if that was their preference. The food we made was delicious (rice balls, YUM). Have people draw table numbers from a hat rather than assigning them--it's more flexible, and people can swap if they want. I had the opportunity to go here for a work function. I regularly prepare blue apron meals, but this was even better! The chef's are super friendly, helpful, and patient and they make the whole experience fun, even if you have no idea what you're doing! We took the French cooking course. They taught me lots of tricks, like how to tell our chocolate was ready and what kind of texture French onion soup should be. It was super educational but still super fun. My department had a team building event with HOG and had the most fabulous time. From the moment we walked in until the moment we left, we were greeted, treated, pampered, and satisfied. I love to cook and was really curious about whether I would actually learn much during this activity. I found it to be perfect for the most novice to the most experienced of "chefs". We were broken into teams to cook different parts of our meal which we would later dine on and since I have some cooking basics I found that I was able to jump into the experience at my level whereas someone else who might not enjoy it as much was given tasks that fit their ability. On top of that, our chef Alex was fabulous-O! She gave us all kinds of tips and chatted about her career as a chef. Perhaps what was most pleasing was how delicious the food was. Often when you go to such events you expect to get mediocre taste in the food but it actually tasted like a $60 meals at some swanky restaurant. Best part... we cooked it! Attended a networking event here after a conference. Great space and great idea for casual networking or team building especially for new and diverse teams. The "hands on" portion is very manageable ... we really weren't here to learn how to cook, but having something to do with your hands, listening to simple instructions is a great way to break the ice with other people who hate networking! We broke into teams to prepare appetizers, dessert, soups etc - while the staff did the majority of the heavy lifting. Afterwards we all sat down to a very long table and broke bread together. The food was excellent and the ingredients fresh and top quality. Open bar, giving me the illusion that I made that dessert, exchange of some business cards with other retailers all came together for a pretty good time. read more
