From elementary school to…read morea college music major to eventually teaching to gigging and setups, I've had great experiences buying, having repairs done, and having setups done here. I think the most instructive story to date, though, would be the time I was about to bring in a guitar to get set up and hastily grabbed a bass on the way out the door too, figuring "this hasn't been played in a few years, it's safe to assume it needs a setup too." I hadn't been in years. I had just moved back to the area and there was no reason for anyone at the shop to know me or treat me differently. I dropped off the guitar and the bass asking for new strings on the guitar and a setup on each. I know they do their setups over at Reston Music off-site, meaning they'd have to transport it there and back to the technician. When I came to get them a few days later, the bass came back with a note that said "intonation is fine, strings are already very low -- no charge. Let me sum that up: I just hastily assumed my old, neglected bass needed a setup on the way out the door of my house, I dropped it off fully intending to pay for a setup, and it was already fine. They could've just charged me and handed it back without touching it and I'd have been none the wiser, but they spent time and gas moving it around and looking at it just to tell me honestly that it was fine like it was and I didn't need to pay them for it. I love this whole family of stores. Ernie, who works the counter frequently at the Chantilly location, really knows his stuff across the whole line of instruments and the brands and quality of replacement parts, and he won't hesitate to help you figure out exactly what you need *within your budget,* outlining the cost-benefit for your options. This place operates with integrity and attention-to-detail and they really take care of their customers. I don't take my instruments anywhere else.

He answered all of my questions and I was leaning toward buying an Epiphone acoustic guitar at the time. Noah also gave me a tour - there is a whole other level downstairs! There must have been some 20 private music lesson rooms, and then down this back hallway - a large room for jam sessions/open mic night on Friday nights. Based on the service I received from Noah - I like Contemporary Music Service. The place is bright, well laid out, clean, and energizing. This SHOULD have taken an hour or two tops, maybe a day if they were very busy. However, this store kept his guitar for over three weeks (after saying it would be a "couple days, tops"), and when he got it back, nearly nothing had been done. The bridge and nut remain the same, and the guitar's finish has fingerprints all over it. They then charged him $40 to get his guitar back, which basically amounted to a string change. I find this completely unacceptable, and I will never ever give them any business ever again. I had a similar operation done to my acoustic at Guitar Center, and it took less than two hours. I urge all of you to boycott this shop as they're incapable of following through on a very simple request, even after multiple calls over the course of 3 weeks for this "couple days, tops" work. I was in disbelief but said nothing and quietly left the shop. I later forwarded documentation (of evidence, where he himself mentioned the location) by email; although communication had previously been prompt, I received no response thereafter. Another reputable luthier quoted approximately $250 for the same repair with a guarantee. In my experience, the pricing of some instruments and bows also felt disproportionately high relative to their quality. Charging premium prices is a business decision, and customers can decide whether the cost is worthwhile. What I found far more troubling was the apparent denial of prior work despite documentation I provided. In my experience, that lack of accountability and communication was deeply unprofessional and ethically concerning. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this shop to musicians who value fair pricing, quality workmanship, professional accountability, and respectful treatment of customers.

Well, they may have just outdone themselves. Children, otherwise gifted, may have their musical potential ruined by the instruction they receive at this school. I went to Rowan to get a second lobe piercing, and I was very surprised!! Their staff was very kind…read moreand welcoming, and the space was inviting and clean. The nurse who did my piercing gave me plenty of time to decide if the placement was to my liking, and she made sure it was straight and aligned perfectly to my ear shape. They had many hypoallergenic earring options, and two different methods of piercing, which were device and needle piercing. I chose device since I was on a budget, and I was a little skeptical since I had gotten a piercing done with a piercing gun before (which ended badly) and was very painful. However, the device was hand pressured instead of spring loaded, and was a lot easier and quicker! The pain was very minimal, and there was almost no difference in pain between needle and device piercing. The staff ensured everything was completely sterilized, and gave me lots of proper care instructions. I would recommend for all ages!

The response to my report of a complication failed to meet…read moremy expectations for a company that markets itself as a service provided by "licensed medical professionals". This is not a medical practice. Nine weeks following a second lobe piercing, I woke up and realized that the labret of my flatback earring had embedded inside my lobe. I went directly to the studio and stated that I was having a complication and wanted to speak to the nursing supervisor. I was denied. I asked if there was one present. I was told yes, but again denied. The nurse I spoke to said she could help me. She assessed my ear. She said that maybe the back had fallen out. She correctly did not want to risk trying to get it out and referred me to Urgent Care. The doctor there was able to expel the labret by pushing the earring forward through the hole. She placed me on the antibiotic Cephalexin 250 mg 4x daily for 7 days and also ordered a tetanus shot. Hindsight is 20/20. I made the mistake of choosing my piercing method based on the jewelry I selected, which called for a "device" piercing. This IS a piercing gun, and there are plenty of reports of adverse outcomes resulting from piercings with this tool. Looking back I am also disappointed in the lack of patient education. If Rowan really wanted you to understand about needle gauge and post length in connection to swelling that is likely to occur they would post that information on their website. Instead they are happy to take your money to change a post when it becomes to tight when swelling occurs, then again, when it is too long after the swelling has gone down. Nobody has followed up with me. Rowan claims a 1% complication rate. Mine is a complication and nobody has documented it or followed up with me. I do not trust that claim and I will no longer do business with Rowan.
