I decided to take up piano again after retiring from a career as a lawyer for the federal government, to find enjoyment playing for family and friends as well as for the challenge of developing a new (or long-unused) skill. I am Elza's oldest student, among her many students who range in age from young children up to older children and adults. I have found Elza to be an excellent teacher. She is very flexible, so although her orientation is primarily classical, when I have shown an interest in working on some more popular styles (e.g., Broadway tunes, jazz standards), she is very willing to work with me. Her instruction covers not only technique, but also sight reading, ear training, and music theory and history. Elza is also very warm and friendly, she makes her students feel at ease with her. Now with the coronavirus crisis, Elza teaches online via Zoom. I'm finding that the online lessons work very well, and even have the advantage of saving me the time to drive to and from her studio.

In my mid-40s Coren became my first instructor after he selflessly suggested what type of guitar to buy when I contacted him for that expertise alone. With regard to practicing, it took me a year and a half to find my groove. Which is to say other than cramming for an hour before our sessions I didn't practice. Week after week I felt self-conscious due to that lack on my part. On any given day Coren was always cool fielding me where I was at. Whether face to face or via Zoom, he is an attuned cat. Something clicked last month. I'm practicing a lot and there's been a significant improvement in my ability. I have gone from hiding that I play to ensuring the performance of a song or two centerpieces any family distanced call I'm in. It brings joy into my family's spaces near and far, and I know that is what drives Coren, continuing the awakening to the joy that comes from playing music. With Coren it is a challenging experience that develops confidence and interest, not frustration and boredom. He shares his thorough knowledge of music theory, such as modes and keys, which is good for those of us who don't want to just listen-and-repeat, but to understand the logic and structure behind music. But he only occasionally touches on music theory instead of going overboard with it. For me, the experience has been very balanced in terms of being challenged, not bored or overwhelmed, which I think is essential to development.

I have been a patron of the Manassas Music and Arts store for many years. I've come to know Mike…read morethe manager and Wes as my go to's. They know through our interactions when I'm looking to make a purchase. In this case to upgrade my tenor sax. They are not pressure salesman. If they were, I would not be working with them, trust me on that. I bought a very nice, professional tenor sax at their Horn Showcase in December 2023. It seemed like the perfect choice. But as I really dug into it at home, I noticed one quirky thing. I informed them about it. I took it to my technician twice and talked to their technician as well. They heard and understood what was happening but nothing showed that was wrong to fix it. I informed Mike and Wes about this "thing" and they brought in another horn for me to try to see about an exchange. It was a more expensive horn, but the horn I bought even with the very annoying quirk played so much better. While I haven't decided if I'm going to return the sax or not, I will say how much of a pleasure it is and has been working with Mike and Wes over the years. They have been consumate professionals and consultative through this whole process as well. I am woodshedding the horn now, putting it through its paces. It seems to be working out, hopefully, as I adjust this and fiddle with that. One of my sax friends has the soprano model of my tenor and and alto by the same manufacturer shared that is a quirk in his horns as well. But he loves them all the same. I get it. The long and short of it is, this is my store and they are my dudes. In an age of rapidly declining customer service, I have nothing but the highest praises for them and the culture they've got going on over there. I will not look to work with any consultants other than Mike and Wes and the Manassas Music and Arts team. Go check them out. Bravo and thank you! As a P.S. I discovered with my repair tech the screws on the octave mechanisms on both necks needed to be addressed. They werent allowing the pad to stay completely sealed with that one fingering.
