I am a mentor at Children of Promise…read more Having done a lot of mentoring through various organizations in the past, I can say that COP is exceptionally diligent in their screening, training and matching of mentors and mentees, which exemplifies the care put into the program and how much they care about their scholars. They have a variety of programs sorted by age group, including after school tutoring and summer camp and put together all sorts of events for the scholars throughout the year. They often get donations of tickets to various experiences for the scholars. For those looking to volunteer or mentor, I cannot recommend COP enough. They are organized, thoughtful, and you really feel as though you're making an impact.

It's so wonderful to see kids, having such great guidance, having structure, and having counselors who clearly love what they do guiding them and teaching them. We would not replace them for the world as Neighbors. grateful for what they do for the kids, we are grateful for what they do for the block and the neighborhood.

I love the mission to provide housing and jobs to men to prevent criminal recidivism. They receive job training counseling and help in any service needed for their success. I volunteered at the phone bank on 12/2/14 to remind parents to attend the free computer donation this coming Saturday. The CFY office is on the 10th floor, and it is a clean, well-lit area with numerous cubicles and computers for volunteers to use. This volunteer opportunity came via NYCares.org. Another worthwhile organization.

ReWild is a well established Native Plants Garden Group that dilligently work to add Natives into…read morethe landscape and bring back some much needed natural cycle of sustainability. Many landscapers and neighbors, know only of the current plantings available that do not support the eco system . They do not know of or realize the wonderful plants that can be added replacing lawns of grass and plants. Port Washington (NY) does indeed take such things seriously. There are many places there where the cycle thrives. Under leadership of the man Raju Rajan (ReWild Long Island) along with some incredible gardeners and participants, listing here but a few here as: Peggy Maslow (NorthShore Audubon Society) Bea Helft (Master Gardener Nassau County Cooperative Extention ) and Mindy Germain, (Port Washington Water District) these processes and location are not only beautiful, but functional. Yesterday there was a very through self guided Sustainable Garden Tour where members in the community displayed their gardens large and small, full or just beginning. Wonderful people with a multitude of knowledge and spirit. The start point was at "Dodge" using your car as a vehicle to travel to different spots to see the beauty around. While driving (Note: many curves, sidestreets and hills and request not to park in front of driveways) along with passing by the water and seeing various birds as ducks, geese and one lone egrit, the eneregies around were comforting as many people on the day were up and about with the beautiful weather. (see pix) it was a wonderful few hours of interaction with people, pets and flowers. I highly reccomend checking them out and getting involved.

Crime Stoppers rewards up to $3,500 for anonymous tips leading to the arrest and conviction of a violent felon. They also have programs that work with youths to help them with life decisions and teach them how to have a voice in their community. The foundation works internationally where they work gathering intelligence on counter terror operations. Achilles Track Club a really cool organization. They focus on team training and a building…read morecommunity atmosphere for adults, children, and veterans with disabilities through running. I volunteered with the Track Club through New York Cares and it was really a great thing to see and be a part of. We set off from the Upper East Side and went straight to Central Park. Some participants walk, while others run, and while some use hand cycles to get their workout. I was with a group that went speed walking around the 1.7 mile bridle path in the shade twice, however the nearly 100 degree heat didn't stop others from running the full 6 miles around the park. Everyone I met was kind and had a story to tell. This is a great organization and I hope to be back many times.
