Went here for two years in a row hoping my first experience was an outlier. Nope. That's just how they are. Unhelpful staff with an attitude. Both years the doctor got offended when I declined her upsell attempts. When you check in, the standard check in paperwork is you consenting to pay additional for non-necessary tests and then act like I'm the asshole for declining after I realized the scam they were running! Also they shipped my contacts to the wrong address even after I confirmed it in writing. No apology or accountability. I had to go drive to the wrong address in the middle of the workday to retrieve. They get two stars instead of one star because they can, in fact, give prescriptions for glasses and contacts. Just don't hope for much else. read more

I am raising this review one star only because Dr. James is highly competent and professional at her job. However, I stand by my previous comments given the new personnel, mostly because I chose Music City Optical over other options at first due to their generous hours and extremely thoughtful, insightful staff who sat with me to carefully adjust my glasses every time. The comment from the business indicated that I could use the patient portal to check my eye numbers. However, this is only true for prescriptions in my case (and most likely yours if you go here for a prescription). I think that's perfectly fine for people only looking to update these particular numbers. However, I only had access to my numbers for prescription rather than the more in-depth numbers needed for a consult at another location, as requested by this location and Dr. James' thorough follow-through. I found the comment by the business to perfectly exemplify my preference to go elsewhere: I don't want to be blamed for having a harrowing experience with customer service or staff due to them withholding some aspects of my own medical information and data. That's it. I think Dr. James is amazing, her staff is perfectly mediocre, the pricing is extreme (and adds up quickly on the bill), and I want to take my business elsewhere where my insurance is worth more. One thing I've noticed in business owner Yelp accounts responding to reviews is oftentimes they demand your real name to "resolve the issue," but sometimes it also feels a bit frightening, like they want retribution. I believe if you're brave enough to say something to help other people with their eyesight, that should be enough. First time coming here since recently moving to Nash and needed an eye doctor. One plus was that they accepted my insurance. Unfortunately, the staff was unhelpful and had an attitude. Unlike the other reviews, my problem isn't with the staff, who I found very helpful and generally informed about any questions I had. I do have an issue with their patient portal, which continuously didn't work for me despite multiple calls and emails trying to fix it. Unfortunately, my real issue is Dr. James seems very unprofessional and unwilling to work with her clients. I didn't initially come in for a prescription change because I didn't think my eyesight had gotten worse, I just came for a quick visit so she could prove I wasn't legally blind for my license renewal. She rushed my eye exam, and then told me my eyesight had gotten worse and prescribed me something new. I ordered new glasses, and when they arrived I couldn't see out of them at all. I went to a different optometrist out of curiosity and he was baffled as to why she lowered my prescription in my left eye (that she said didn't change) and lowered my right eye, too, despite saying all that changed was my astigmatism getting a lot worse. The other optometrist told me to go back and ask for a prescription check. When I went in, I didn't even get to see her. Instead, one of the staff members played a game of telephone, running back and forth to tell us what the other said. She refused to change my prescription because she said it was right and she couldn't change anything without messing up everything else (??). I tried to tell the staff member to tell her that I literally couldn't see out of the glasses she gave me and that she shouldn't have changed much about the prescription in the first place and he finally gave up telling her and just told me to my face that there was nothing they could do. Now I'm like, 300 bucks (!!) in the hole with them for no reason given that the prescription wasn't even correct. I went back to the other optometrist for a second eye exam and got a prescription that I could see out of. He was shocked that she wouldn't just re-examine me if I said the prescription was so bad I couldn't see. We theorized that it feels like she just had other things she wanted to do with her time other than re-check me, despite the fact I saw her febreezing the office when I came in. It was extremely frustrating, and the fact she wouldn't change a prescription that was straight up entirely wrong is baffling to me. I'm not usually a "the patient is always right" person, but I know when I can and can't see out of my glasses, lol. Please do not waste your time here. I recommend really anywhere else. The appointment itself was fine and the doctor was thorough and accurate. The staff, however, has made the entire process of ordering annual contacts like pulling teeth. The trouble began at the front desk with the receptionists immediately following the actual appointment. It took them over 20 minutes to place the order, and then they could not provide me with an itemized receipt showing the breakout of the cost of the appointment versus the cost of the actual contacts. Eventually, they allowed me behind the desk to review the itemization myself (looking at their computer screen). I ordered the contacts and they said they should be arriving around April 16th and I would receive a text once they arrived. April 16th came and went and I never received a text. I tried calling and was put on hold for over 15 minutes every time with no response. Eventually, I just showed up in person to the brick and mortar. Another 15 minutes of confusion before they found my contacts stashed in a cabinet. No receipt - no text - nothing. I'm just thankful the contacts actually arrived there, but it would have been nice to have been told they'd be arriving at the brick and mortar and not my actual residence. A few days later I went into the myacuvue website to claim my awards and saw I needed to mail in the receipt. I checked my email because I knew I had requested they email me a copy of the receipt when I left. No receipt was ever emailed. I called at 9am asking if they could email me the receipt. It took over 11 minutes for them to "look me up" and then they finally said, "Okay we'll send that over to you." I said can you confirm the email address? After several more minutes they said it looked like they didn't have an email on file for me (even though I know I provided one on the day of my appointment). I gave them my email again and was assured the receipt would be sent over. Over an hour later, I still had not received the email. I called back at 10:58AM and again it took over 5 minutes for the receptionist just to "look me up". Then she said she didn't see an email on file for me (again). I provided my email a second time. She said please hold and I was on hold for another 10 minutes. I called back three times with no answers. The third time I called back it was another 10 minutes of them saying they were "working on it". Then a manager came on and said it would be "faster if I just came in" to get a paper receipt. I was working and could not physically come in, and I don't understand why it would be faster to come in to get a receipt vs. just having it emailed. After 20 minutes on the phone the receptionist told me they sent it and that they had to go because there were "other things they had to do" (their exact words). I told them I wanted to make sure I had the email before we hung up and was met with combativeness and urgency to end the call. After another 6 minutes, I still had not received an email. I can't believe how difficult the process has been. It has been beyond frustrating because I was so excited to have a neighborhood eye doctor so close to my house - but absolutely not worth the headaches. read more

They are always so nice and helpful and they work with you and care about any issues you have. I had some contacts that didn't work out and they were able to get them exchanged for me right away. When I needed a last minute appointment they were able to fit me in for that too. They take their time with answering your questions, but their exams are fast . No 1-2 hour exams with 1 hour waits like they have at some eye doctors. Great place ! read more

I really wish I would have read the reviews here first before venturing down a frustrating expensive path with this place. I can confirm the talking points from the previous less-than-stellar reviews below. The issues are mostly centered around staff. The doctor seemed fine, although she rushed through the exam. Before i could even get my questions out, she was out the door. My fault for scheduling a 4:40PM appointment i guess. The staff offered little to no instruction or information, and were largely nonverbal during the process. I've never worn glasses before, and was experiencing headaches and poor vision, so it was a big deal for me in every way to be seen and find a solution to my sight issues. There were lots of little frustrations with doing business with Music City Optical, but ultimately the gist is that the staff was always in a rush even though no one is in the place, I had to pry for information, my glasses aren't right after 3 visits, the frame order was screwed up, and I'm almost 2 grand invested in this place over the last few years and still struggling with my vision. If I'm a burden while handing over cash, it seems pointless to express my concerns with service. Just go elsewhere if you're looking for a premium experience for premium prices. read more

I wish I would've read the reviews before going here. I took my daughter for a contact lens fitting today. The front desk staff were extremely rude and condescending. Both front desk staff rolled her eyes multiple times while I was trying to go over the bill and even slammed my credit card on the counter. My daughter felt so uncomfortable she went and waited outside. Unfortunately it seems I had a very similar experience to many other reviewer's. After reviewing the bill I told them I did not want to order contacts through them but they charged my credit card anyways and will not give me my daughters prescription unless I come back for a follow up visit which neither my daughter or I feel comfortable doing. I highly recommend avoiding this office! Save yourself the aggravation. read more

Wonderful Dr. I found the staff to just be ok. It's a local business, so I kinda expected to pay a lil more than going into a lens crafters. I have insurance and for only an exam - it was still over $100. I would have purchased new frames there if they had any that I liked. Unfortunately, they didn't- so I bought some online. For the online prescription- I needed to provide my PD, Pupillary Distance. This wasn't on the prescription that I was provided with. I had to go back in and get this measured. It took the kid about 42 seconds on his ipad, and he charged me 20 bucks. I think that was a bit petty. It was very inconvenient for me to have to go back in. Also, after I saw the dr - I stood at the front counter for like 20 minutes while their front desk folks stared at their screens trying to figure out what to charge me. Again.. I think they have awesome tech at this place. The actual eye exam, and the dr was delightful. Very good- However, the rest of the experience was just ok. Their people were very slow, not overly nice, and I felt like I was being nickel and dimed for everything. It's so close to where I live. I might be back... might just hit lenscrafters... for the same exact stuff.... it's cheaper. Wish I had a better overall exeperience here. Really disappointed with this place. I came in for an eye appointment + contacts + lenses put into my new glasses. My main impression is that the staff, although friendly, seems mostly young and inexperienced. I was rushed - I mean rushed, as if they had better things to do - through the initial eye appointment and as a result I didn't receive the ideal prescription. Even after receiving new contacts I am still having trouble reading from long distances. I also still haven't gotten my glasses back despite it being over two weeks now...every other optical place I've been to in Nashville has taken less than a week. Lastly, despite having vision insurance I still paid WAY more for both contacts + glasses lenses than I ever have WITHOUT insurance in the past. Would not recommend this place at all! Save your money and time and go to a discount optical that's been around for more than a decade - you'll have a far better experience there. read more

Pretty awful experience all the way around honestly. Upcharged like crazy. Glasses came back - weren't correct so they sent them back, said it would take a week, took over 2 and I had to call them. They said it was coming in by FED EX today, the day I call of all days. After 4 hours they never called back to confirm they came in even though I said I had to have them today due to leaving for 3 weeks tomorrow AM. I finally just went by there. Guy grabbed them from a cabinet and they were exactly as I left them 2 weeks ago. I believe he never sent them in, still had the original paperwork from the first time and the sharpie mark on the progressive lens from him marking them last time. I asked him to be honest, did he even send them in. He said yes, I asked all the above questions and he wasn't convincing. I asked him to show me the other glasses that came in and see if they have a mark on the lens as well. He wouldn't, of course. I asked why it didn't have a mark the first time they came in if this what the normal protocol is, he gave an answer that wasn't an answer. Like I said, pretty awful experience, my almost $600 eyeglasses ( with the insurance discounts btw ) are basically unusable, I even took them off to write this review. He said he could send them back again but at this point I will just have to go somewhere else and have them do it right, I dont trust them at this point. Not even sure where to start to fi the problem i.e. if they eye exam was correct to begin with as to why I can't see with them on. Save your money. and go somewhere else, these folks dont care once they get your money, and barely care before that. read more

They were able to get me in on the same day I called, so that was the first plus. As soon as I walked in, I felt right at home. All of the ladies were so friendly and welcoming, and the office itself is stunning. The tech who did the initial testing was very friendly and explained everything she was doing. All if the machines were new and clean, the whole place just felt very comfortable. The doctor herself was phenomenal! She was able to help me understand what was happening with my eyes and give me a means for relief. I felt like she honestly cared about what I was dealing with. The icing on the cake was their immaculate selection of designer frames. I had a nice little pseudo shopping session with the ladies who work there, and they found me the perfect frames. I'm in love. Another plus, I'm moving to California next week and they're making it possible to get everything I need before I leave. The only bad thing is that I just found them and now I have to move. Music City Optical - My new Tom Ford frames they helped me pick out! - Optometrists Near Me - Nashville, Tennessee

They purposefully gave a vague estimate on what their cost was when I called to make an appointment. They charge $100 for the routine eye exam and an additional $85 for contact lenses. I brought in my previous contact prescription, which the doctor simply wrote down. Then they gave me the contacts to try on, which were not even the correct prescription strength, because apparently they did not have my proper prescription. Then they looked at my eyes for ten seconds. This cost $85. Tell me how you can properly evaluate someone for contact lenses if you do not even provide the proper prescription? The routine eye exam was also done very quickly. The doctor did not seem to care. Please save yourself money and go elsewhere for better service. I have been going for eye exams for over twenty years, and this was the most rushed and unpersonalized service I have ever experienced. The lady at the front desk is also exceptionally rude. I have never in my life experienced such awful, condescending attitude from someone allegedly in customer service. Reading the other reviews, it seems to be a common occurrence. This was the worst experience I have ever had at an eye doctor. After opting-in to all of the extra paid health tests for my eyes, and being told throughout the exam that my eyes were dry and complicated... the doctor said that she couldn't write a prescription for my dry eye medicine (that I've been on for 13 years) because it would take her too long to fill out the forms. She said that I would need to gone back and pay another visit fee and she would write it out. This place is a complete scam. read more

I found my optometrist! I have super weird no network insurance and after calling 12 different optometry offices Music City Optical took the time to call my insurance directly. The front desk set up an appointment, took my info, called my insurance and then got back to me. She was/is so helpful and I'm so thankful someone actually listened and took the time to find out how my insurance worked. Everyone I interacted with was extremely helpful, during my appointment. Dr. James is so sweet! She took the time to get to know me and was efficient in checking my eyes. They have an amazing selection of designer brand glasses and sunglasses. Her staff was great at helping me find just the right frames. I showed him what I was looking for and it only took about 5 min for me to pick the perfect pair! I docked it one star, because I would have liked to have seen the prices of the glasses. I get that all these price tags wouldn't look aesthetically pleasing in the cases, but it would be nice, that way people wouldn't try on an amazing pair to find it to be out of their price range. I came here because of the higher rating and they accepted my insurance. My initial visit went well, no complaints on the staff or the doctor at that time. They switched my brand from Acuvue to Air Optix and about 2 weeks after using the contact I started to experience pain, redness and irritation. I took my contacts out that evening and had red rings around both of my eyes. I tried contacting them via telephone and left a message as well as email, I failed to hear back from them in a timely manner so I reached out to them again and got ahold of them. I simply wanted my contacts switched back to Acuvue and they tried to tell me that it was allergies causing my problems and were insisiting on me keeping Air Optix. Eventually I did get them to agree to switch my contacts back to acuvue. In march I had another eye irritation and I went to Vanderbilt Eye Institue, they told me it was a continued reaction to the Air Optix lenses because I did not give my eyes enough time to heal before applying my new contacts - which was I was not educated on by Music City Optical when I got my new set of contacts. I then reviewed them on facebook at that time. Today (8/30/16) I recieved a response to my review on facebook and a corresponding email stating that I was being slanderous and lying, which was not the case at all. Great office with a great optometrist! When I first moved to Nashville, I had the daunting task of finding providers I liked and trusted. I did my fair share of research and decided to try out Music City Optical. They have hours that fits my schedule and are always able to accommodate me within a day or two at most. Dr. James is very nice and personable. She is patient and makes great recommendations. The office is very trendy and comfortable. Staff is friendly and quick to answer questions and return phone calls. They feature great designer glasses and are quick to get your glasses completed. You will get full works here. I have yet to have a problem here. If you are a budget hunter, you could probably be able to find a more affordable place to get lenses and glasses. However for the exam portion of services, they are top notch! I have yet to feel the need to go to anyone else in Nashville. read more

Heard about Music City Optical from a co-worker and her recommendation was great! I was able to book an appointment on the office website (picking a date and time) which was very convenient for my schedule. I appreciated that the office sent me a text the day before my appointment to confirm that I would be attending (and send me a quick reminder). The office is located in Music Row but don't stress about parking - the office has its own lot (for free) behind the building. I was able to quickly pull in and head over to my appointment. The office is an old house and is filled with charm. The front desk women were welcoming and had me complete paperwork. They explained that the office is using new optometry technology which would be outside my insurance but explained the benefits. I met with the tech who was very friendly and walked me through the testing. All of the equipment was clean and the tech was more than accommodating to adjust the testing to my comfort needs. The new technology their office is using completely does away with the usual eye drops that widen your eyes so your able to walk away comfortable and go about your day. The new technology is used to test for illnesses of the eye and give a better understanding of your eye to the doctor. Dr. James completed some testing in her office and we were able to talk about my specific eye needs. She was very attentive to what I need for my day to day life and was able to help me come up with a plan that was personalized for me. I then met with an associate in the frames section who was able to help me work with my insurance plan to find frames that fit my face and were chic. I am excited to have found a great optometrist in Nashville and can't recommend their office enough! I had a wonderful experience and will be back for future appointments. read more

Overall very pleased with the service I got from Music City Optical. I was able to book an appointment without difficulty, and ended up lasting a little under an hour (even as a new patient). My prescriptions were quickly updated and I was sent away with a few trial contacts. Staff is friendly, they helped me navigate what my insurance covers (or doesn't). I love Dr. James and her staff and have been a patient for at least 10ish years or more. Dr. James takes great care of my eyes, stays current in knowledge and technology, and has the latest in contact lenses and designer frames in the optical store. I have visited Music City Optical twice. The first visit was pleasant and easy - got my prescription and then picked out a pair of glasses. However, the second visit was very rushed. My contact lense fitting did not feel like a time to figure out which lense worked best for me, but more as a time to try the lenses that this Company benefited from the most. When I complained about the lenses itching my eyes and wanting to go back to my original brand, I was not taken seriously until I asked once more for my original brand. In addition, they mentioned if I purchased 2 24 pack lenses I would receive over $160 back, however, the reimbursement was only $40. Do not think I will be returning. read more

The staff treat you with the same kind , professional manner regardless of if you are purchasing frames from them or taking it elsewhere to be filled. Terrible service! I went in for an exam in May and asked for a specific brand of contacts she insisted that I try the CooperVision brand--so i put them in my eyes and told her they were uncomfortable and scratchy and i would rather stick with my usual brand. She still insisted that I take them (CooperVision) home and try them--well I called to let her know that they were definitely not working and she refused to fit me for another pair of contacts without paying. Well I needed to be able to see and so i ordered the contacts from 800contact and THEY even tried to get her to change the prescription and she said she was going to charge me $69 for a fitting--for a FITTING! After I've already paid her OVER $100 for the contact prescription. So I was forced into getting these contacts; once i received them they were still uncomfortable (it literally felt like something was tearing my eyes--i went into work and SOMEONE ASKED ME IF I WAS DRUNK because my eyes were so bloodshot) so I once again went back to the dr.'s office and asked for the brand for which I had initially asked--once again they refused to fit me unless i paid 70 bucks for the fitting. So I am stuck with contacts that I cannot wear. TODAY--My fiancee called and told me about a recall of contacts and that I should look it up and see if its the same ones--THEY ARE!!! I can't understand why, knowing that there is a recall, she would still prescribe me these contacts. read more

The Good: Very nice place, it was very trendy and the people seemed to be nice . Right on Music Row with their own parking The Bad: When I went to check out, my bill was higher than expected. I felt mislead cause they told me what the ball park figure of what I would be paying before I went in to the exam and that I would be covered by my insurance. When i went to check out my bill was 80 bucks! Now that might not be much to some, but I am on a tight budget so i tried to understand and they did not do a very good job explaining it to me. So when i got my receipt i looked and saw that there was a charge for a "contact exam" in addition to the eye exam that was covered by insurance. My last eye doctor, I did not run into this with my contacts....This is a hidden fee, and that is one thing that does not build trust with me....
