If you still want your music in vinyl or CD, Music Coop is your kind of place. This shop has a stunning and often overwhelming selection of both, plus a few specialty items sprinkled around. One of those was an extremely sturdy pine box that was built for LPs, but will also serve my other storage needs well. This also reminds me of the lesser quality containers that the old Peaches chain used to sell. My major regret from this visit was not diving into the CD selection a bit more. I'm not ready to explore LPs again, but the Music Coop might change anyone's minds. My impression of the owner is that he's forgotten more than I'll ever learn here. When it comes to obscure, unique, quality vinyl... This is my GO TO SPOT! I've come to the shop with some pretty obscure requests. One time, I brought them what I was told by other establishments "an impossible order"... it took 3 1/2 weeks, but Jim came through with an authentic, made in the USA, original vinyl copy *YAY* Today, I had a random issue with a family member not having what I now know is called a "45 adapter"; Jim knew what I was describing right away. Ebay was starting at $18.50 + shipping. I called up Jim and he told me to come on down (15 minutes from closing). The Music Coop had plenty available (as well and individual 45 adapters) for a fraction of the cost :) This is DEFINITELY as word-of-mouth type of business, but I am SO GLAD that I didn't have to travel far to find them *BIG SMILES* -PHENOMENAL Customer Service -QUALITY Vinyls (never had an issue with warping) -LOCAL Business -Competitive Pricing This place is solid. We came in to the store when we visited Ashland for a short trip. It's a very good size store where they have vintage vinyls and CDs. We don't own a record player, but we got few as Christmas gifts for friends and family. The owner/staff was very cool, easy going, and price range are not bad. I knew John and the Music Coop from his years in Petaluma. (I lived in Petaluma 27+ years.) On a recent trip to Ashland, I stopped in to say hi and to browse. John remembered me, not that I thought he wouldn't. Not much has changed, except the location. John still has plenty of quality vinyl and CDs. Over the years, I found that if something is available, he's able to get it. He found some really obscure stuff for me. I enjoy his sharing his knowledge of music. Though I wasn't looking for anything in particular, I got a few CDs (yes, I know -- I still buy CDs) of things I didn't even know existed. Still a great, friendly vibe. I miss the Music Coop. It is a very good shop with good stock for records and cassettes, I loved the records but they were about 30% more pricey that other places down the street. The cassettes were 10 bucks each while you can get them for 1 bucks each in most stores or 5 if they are high demand. Just bs prices read more

I have always found exactly what I'm looking for at the music coop. Even if a record is not there, the staff care enough to order more copies (free of charge) and hold them for you. I'm a semi-frequent customer but always get welcomed with a warm smile and asked what I've been listening to lately. There is always (great) music playing in the background and on summer afternoons, you can find the owner and his wife having a glass of wine and dancing around the store. I will always bring my business to the music coop because even if you can purchase albums for a few bucks cheaper online, you can't replace the experience of finding new music firsthand and getting some love from local businesses. read more

To answer the previous reviewer, the Music Coop is from Petaluma, which is apparently the chicken capital of the world. I'm sure they have every kind of ' [fill in the blank] Coop' and no one is the least bit confused. Now they're in Ashland so people think it's the 'Music Co-op'. What they are is one of two truly great record stores in Ashland, along with CD or Not CD. You won't find many better record stores anywhere. read more

This place has a truly incredible and diverse selection of vinyl and CDs, primarily, with some DVDs and cassette tapes thrown in for good measure. This is where I prefer to buy my music, although the one drawback is it's a bit pricey. They do have a bargain bin outside the front door, though. For vinyl lovers, you can't do better than this place within 100 miles at least, i am sure. read more

I only browsed the vinyl, so take my review with that in mind. Pretty solid selection, especially for a town the size of Ashland. Prices were pretty darn high. Lots of reissues with a few nice originals. Deep country, blues, and folk sections, solid reggae section, slim jazz and R&B/funk/soul sections. Not a lot of special, rare gems. read more

Wonderful Jazz and Blues selection New records are overpriced a bit but for a college town, that is pretty normal. The staff greeted us promptly. BUT WAIT Is it Music Co Op or Music Coop? There is a very large selection of CDs & vinyl records. The owner is very knowledgable and will do special orders. The prices, of course, aren't as cheap as online. The sound of a CD is still better then MP3 or iTunes and the quality holds up when entered into a computer as an AIFF file. read more

I went in looking for dollar bins to pick through, I have found gems looking through those looking for music to sample. They didn't have any any and when i asked where i could find them instead of answering the owner gave me a condesending lecture saying that he wouldn't sell them because they would wreck my record player so he throws thousands away. Its up to him if he doesn't want to sell them but i don't like that he destroys plenty of good music because its not in perfect condition and disrespects what record stores are all about. and then tells me i'm doing things wrong. This place lacks the soul of record collecting and is overpriced also i found that the jazz selection was slim compared to plenty of other stores as well as the r&b soul and funk sections. Has some good records if you want to spend more than they're worth guaranteed. You wouldn't judge a book by its cover so why would you do it with other art. read more

I do a weekly Louisiana music show on the radio in Austin and I am always on the lookout for new material in that genre. While visiting friends in the area and walking around Ashland thought I would poke my head in here to see what I could see. I was totally blown away by the guys knowledge and what he had in stock. He had stuff that I could not even find in Louisiana. For those that complain of the high prices, factor in the fact there is no sales tax. My family and I are from California and were vacationing in Oregon this past summer and stopped by the Music Coop to browse the shop. The selection was great! My son bought several jazz cds and the shop owner was very friendly and knowledgeable and also turned us on to the latest Steve Smith Vital Information CD which coincidentally my son was recently studying Steve Smith and his jazz drumming. This is quite simply the best music store in the Rogue Valley, great selection, great ownership, great staff, great conversations and excellent storytelling. It's reassuring when the owner can muse with you as to why Trout Mask Replica is out of print, or why on earth when re-releasing Van Morrison albums did they not select Veedon Fleece for so long. They also get me the rarest of the rare when I need it, and it gets there fast. read more

Sadly with many of the surviving record stores these days, the mentality of them doing you a favor by letting you shop there, and that they are smarter and cooler than you'll ever be, prevails. Not here! Takes pride in the store and its appearance, sections are well marked and properly maintained. Eclectic (not annoying mix) of music played in the store. Selection ranges from mainstream to esoteric. Where else can I get a Beatles rarity and Katy Perry in the same place. Wife bought a Christmas gift and the price had gone way up from when I'd priced it. I tried to return it as I thought it was over priced. There was nothing written as to their return policy but they insisted they couldn't refund the money only only give me a credit.
