I got really informative lessons, and I personally wanted to go every time after the first lesson. He's seriously passionate about giving people the opportunity to express themselves through music, and that just seeps through his lessons. As an adult theater - the shows range from safe to edgy, which is great to see as it appeals to a broad audience. I'd like to see more edge but all theaters have to keep the lights on, you know? They attract talented actors and directors. The black box is minimal in all senses of the word, but it never hurts the quality. I'd rather see a bare bones set if the show is done well than big budget designs with terrible direction or acting. As a children's theater - all efforts are made to teach their young performers more than just how to stand and look cute. The shows are fun and less "cheesy" than your average kids' productions. You can tell how much work goes into these shows, both on and off stage. Parking is free, there are plenty of refreshments that aren't priced to break the bank, and the staff is warm and welcoming. Sure, there is room for improvement. But for a theater company just now in the end of their second season, they are running like a well oiled machine. Seasoned professionals are behind this operation, and it shows. Check them out!!!

The program has exposed my kids to a variety of music they might never have listened to otherwise and helped them learn about the history and foundations of rock, jazz, metal, and pop. I think the focus on performance has helped to keep them from plateauing and given them something concrete to work toward. They're also able to work on personal projects and goals with instructors. Eric, Cyndi, Brandy, and Kyle are very warm and welcoming. I've talked the most to Eric and Cyndi--you can tell they really care about the families of School of Rock. They've also been very understanding of the fact that our family had a really rough winter/spring and sometimes practice fell by the wayside. Mathieu has been an absolute inspiration to my daughter. He's helped her lean into her strengths while nudging her into improving her weaknesses. Ian has the patience and good humor of a saint because my son is not an easy kid to teach. Somehow Ian has figured out a good approach that has encouraged my son to try difficult things without the kind of pressure that makes him dig in his heels. Every performance director they've had has been super encouraging, even when the going gets tough. Johnny, their most recent director, was just the nicest guy even when the kids were struggling. I'm really glad we gave School of Rock a try. It's been a meaningful and positive addition to our lives and I'm grateful for the kids' experiences there.

Seeking to improve my talents as a vocalist, I've also taken group as well as private lessons at Old Town School of Music. I personally find private lessons to be of much more use than group lessons as it affords much more time to address the technical concerns(bad habits, posture, etc.) that are holding me back. A satisfying one on one dynamic with a private vocal coach can be much more difficult to find. I've had teachers where the lessons don't seem like they're building on anything; the "arc" of the lessons seems disconnected. As a private teacher, Davin is the best I've worked with. What I like about him is that he will keep on me about my bad habits and he's not afraid to be direct with his criticism(another peeve I have about some private coaches is that they are afraid to lose you as a client so they tend to sugarcoat things). Anyhoo, I heartily recommend him as a teacher. I joked with him once that as a starving artist, I have a budget: Rice, Beans and Singing Lessons. And it's true. Finding your voice as a singer is one of the most satisfying and amazing things you can do and with his help, I'm well on my way. Thanks, dude!

It's a classy, extremely high caliber music school disguised in a humble, charming building and taught by humble charming people. Additionally, randomly, their bass teachers are also really, really, ridiculously cool. And smart. And funny?! And for some reason their rooms always smell the best?! Anyway, just my observation as someone who walked by it on the sidewalk once and definitely not the bass teacher with the essential oil diffuser (it's cedarwood oil). On a more serious (quarter) note: enrolling your kids here opens them to an extremely supportive, positive, driven community while at the same time exposes them to the highest caliber private & small group music instruction in Naperville.

She has taught my daughter more in 6 months then we got for 2 years. My daughter loves working with her because she makes it fun, but productive.
