Saw the play "What Once Was" and the theater is BEAUTIFUL! Worth the time to explore!

I mean, let's be honest, El Paso is a loooooong dusty road away from Broadway. But ya know, we do the best we can out here. So keep that opening statement in mind; El Paso Texas is not Broadway. So for those of us that have caught shoes out there, just don't expect that type of experience. With that being said, the Plaza Theatre in El Paso, next to San Jacinto Plaza and surrounded by a lot of downtown restaurants, is really quite nice. It's a very old (but well maintained) theatre. Walking in and just looking around is always kinda fun. You can tell you're in a piece / place of history. The actual theatre / seating area is pretty nice too. It's well decorated and taken care of. The acoustics are fine. Views are fine from almost anywhere in the place. The events that come into town vary, as they do anywhere. But we do get some very nice off Broadway musicals that come through. That's why we go - for the musicals. We've seen really great productions of Hairspray, Waitress etc... and have tickets for upcoming ones likes the classic CATS, and even newer more modern ones like Hamilton! Concerts and traditional musical acts (bands) also come here too. There's always something going on at the Plaza Theatre. It's worth dressing up and going out to. Just keep in mind, not everyone here in the old Sun City knows the kind of etiquette one might expect while watching a show ... it is what it is though. Honestly, I'm not even sure it's El Paso anymore and not just THE World, period. But please expect people to have everything from cell phones ringing, babies crying, getting up and scootching last everyone single person in the row to loudly go use the restroom before intermission even... and of course the loud chatting. But again, I've noticed more and more from coast to coast, it's not just El Paso and the theatre, this kinda of (lack of) etiquette / manners / behavior out in public (depending on situation and location), seems to be everywhere with everyone. The Plaza Theatre (sadly) included. Good news is, the theatre itself is great! Not Plazas fault who walks in the doors!

The history awaits you the minute you walk into the El Paso Plaza! It is such a stunningly beautiful building. It has been years since it's restoration, but the maintenance to this historic building is highly maintained. It truly is an architectural gem. We are here to see Shen Yun, and are anxiously awaiting the highly-rated amazing performance. Time to turn off our phones. I'll let you know how the performance was once it is over.

I've attended seven events at the Plaza Theatre. I had the pleasure of seeing comedian Ralph Barbosa last night and the experience was amazing. The theatre had stellar staff who showed the upmost professionalism while attending to guests and keeping things orderly during the show. If you're lucky enough to go to the Plaza for a show of any kind I'd recommend sitting in the mezzanine level. This provided my party and I the perfect view of the stage and the beautiful decorations the theatre has. The ambience is unmatched. Someone in my party described it as "giving Cheesecake Factory" in the best way. Take that as you will. With a beautiful painted blue night sky with stars shining down on the talent, a night at the Plaza is truly one of best experiences one can have while in El Paso.

More and more shows are coming to El Paso. I recommend getting on the El Paso Live email list. As soon as a new show becomes available you will get notified. Tonight I was able to get seats for Elf through an email months ago. The theater is not big but has a few good amenities available.

I love this beautiful historic theater. I claim that it is haunted and there's sprits in there. I went to the restroom and it smelled like somebody was smoking. I went to the shen yun it was my second time going to the theater.

This theatre is beautiful. The architecture is gorgeous. I love the details from the Juliet balconies to the glimmering "stars" on the ceiling. The pipe organ is an interesting attraction in itself. The restrooms are clean & updated with large mirrors & seating areas for those waiting on someone. One of the restrooms even has vanity sitting, a lovely feature. I have been enjoying the theatre since its reopening in 2006. There are several events I attend yearly & would recommend a visit. I've been to concerts here, which is cool because it feels very intimate. One of the singers I saw even did a few songs with no microphone & we could hear him perfectly. The Film Festival is so much fun too! I especially like when they invite stars from different movies to speak about the film. They have all types of shows, one year I saw The Blue Man Group! Note: For those who are mobility impaired there's at least 2 ways of getting into the theatre that I know of. In the front lobby area there's a lift & elevator to the upper floors. It's just to the left of the front stairs. The second entrance that I know of is through the W. Main Dr. between the back of the Museum of Art & the Plaza, the entrance is marked with a disability plaque. There are no stairs at that entrance.

Such a cool concept, comedy at a venue near you!…read more Laughterhours Comedy puts on El Paso's largest comedy competition too and overall this years was a huge hit (so much so that I don't think they were actually prepared for how much interest there would be). Next year I expect that they'll use larger venues for the shows because two of the venues were at capacity (possibly over capacity...but you didn't hear that here). But when they're not putting on El Paso's Funniest Comedy Competition, they have weekly shows and hook-up with a few other comedy groups in the area to put on open-mics, writing shops, and more shows. There are more aspiring comedians in EP and the surrounding area than one would suspect. Check out their Facebook to stay up to date on shows and definitely catch one. Sure you're gonna see some newbies up on the stage that are trying to figure out what works and what doesn't, but there will also be seasoned vets that will have you laughing your ass off. My two fave comedians in this group are actually the faces of Laughterhours, Gibbs (the owner) and Adam. Prior to working with Laughterhours, Adam actually won EPFCC so that's saying something. And Gibbs also known as the Comagician does a show that's a cross between a magic show and a comedy show. Somehow it works when he does it...although I will say, he's a better comedian than a magician. I've caught Laughterhour shows at places like The Network, Leo's, Shamrocks, and even the Comic Strip. And tickets are usually cheap (or free if it's an open mic)! Look 'em up, it's bond to be a great night!

We can do trivia without an unfunny comedian. All this guy did was put homemade memes up and do historical trivia. He started off with cracking jokes on the military...at a military event. We've got no problem laughing at ourselves but cracking jokes that military can't spell and are stupid when the majority of the room has at least masters degrees? Making jokes that our "butts clenched up" when he mentioned that we were prepping for deployments? Half the audience walked out. Apparently this guy forgot the first rule of public speaking is knowing your audience. He was a broken record marketing his comedy club. I wouldn't go if he paid me to. Watching paint dry might be more entertaining.

This is an absolute gem in the heart of El Paso…read more I have been here for many musicals and never grow tired of seeing its beautiful infrastructure and ornate decor that brings out so much class. To date, I have seen Phantom of the Opera, Waitress, and Hairspray. I actually also missed out on an opportunity to see the hilarious Jo Koy who did his stint here as well but heard nothing but good things! I'm thrilled that El Paso can have these Off Broadway shows so that everyone can experience the beauty of theater art and see how much talent a group of people can put a show together and wow a crowd of all ages. A lot of people don't seem to realize just how crowded a theater can get and I've literally seen people leave because of that reason. It's unfortunate because it often happens when the show has already started and people on stage very much see every movement of the audience. Although it puts a slight hamper on the theater experience for myself, the shows are beyond magical and captivating to forget all about that inconvenience thankfully. I also have never bought season tickets for anything in my life but in order to get the optimal seats I wanted AND make sure it can be for Hamilton (only the best musical to date), I had to get season tickets. For Orchestra row S, I was very happy to pay $1000 for 6 shows. Thank you La Plaza Theater for bringing more life to El Paso!

I came here with a date to watch an encore presentation of "Footloose" in November…read more Since there are a lot of things that go into a dinner theatre production, I'll break it down into sections. I'll start from the bad to the good. Food: 2/5 stars - I must say, this was the most disappointing part of the night. The food was mediocre at best and the best part of the food was the wine that we bought. Sound engineering: 2/5 - Also a big disappointment, I believe each member of the cast was mic'ed up and the sound mixer/engineer should know the lines by this point in the production. Sadly, this was not the case as several lines were inaudible, music was poorly balanced, and the overall sound was pretty bad. Light Engineering: 4/5 - Nothing big here, no huge gaffes or mistakes. Cast/acting: 4/5 - I had never actually seen the original (or remake) of the Hollywood version of "Footloose" before this performance so I came in with basically no expectations. The cast was full of energy and were obviously talented. Whoever casted the preacher was on point. No huge gaffes or mistakes and the pace of the scenes were executed pretty well. The comedy timing was pretty good as well. I do have to break this down further though. Singing: 3/5 - While he did try his best, the main actor who played Ren was not a very good singer. He shined most when he had dancing parts, which is understandable to cast a male lead in "Footloose" based on their dancing. Every other part did fairly well in giving their vocal performances but since the male lead is so pivotal to the performance, I have to dock some points here. Dancing: 5/5 - This is where most of the performers, and overall performance shined. Every person knew where to be at the right time and the overall visual aesthetic was very well executed. As I mentioned before, the male lead who played Ren was a really awesome dancer and he shined in his solo moments. Overal: 3/5 - A mixed bag from really bad to really good. I did enjoy the overall show though but I was expecting a bit more, especially since the cost was a bit pricey.

Alfresco! Fridays is one of my favorite Summer events in El Paso, it is a free outdoor concert…read moreseries that takes place every Friday between May and September. While the focus of it is never really the performers, I can't say I've ever heard of any of the acts I've seen before or the ones that are coming this year, it's more about an opportunity to unwind outdoors with your friends and some cold beverages (which are also your friend). But the music does matter, and to El Paso Live's credit, they bring a different type of music style every Friday, giving good variety to the series, so, for example, if you don't like Tejano (and why would you?), you can still check out the event on a Friday when a Tex-Mex band will be performing, and once you realize that Tejano and Tex-Mex are exactly the same, you can look at the schedule and plan to come a Friday when a Rock or a Salsa band will be playing. Avoiding Tejano music is a very important thing to me, I work hard at it, and so should you, no ear deserves to be tortured in such a way. But back to the point, they bring different kinds of music. They also have beverage tents where you can buy a cold beverage to enjoy the afternoon. The concerts used to take place next to the Plaza Theater, but that's not information you needed to know, because this year they moved it to the Plaza area at the Convention Center. There's plenty of seating, but I recommend getting there about 45mins-1hr early if you want to secure a table.
