An iconic staple in downtown El Paso that has been a signature institution for the city since 1930. I've had the pleasure of visiting this space for a few different shows. From Broadway to the Symphony. you can find an opportunity to discover this theater firsthand. I really enjoy seeing the marquee lit up and welcoming you inside. There is a main bar in the lobby area and I really like the setup of the bathrooms on the basement floor with lounge seating. Acoustics and sounds is great and I really like how they're securing more and more opportunities for El Pasoans to enjoy. An absolute must if you ever have the chance. read more

I really liked how the Plaza Theater was so easy to get to. I have to admit that, although I'm not a huge fan of most parking structures in downtown, the parking structure right across from the theater was already somewhat better than most parking structures in downtown. It's a little tricky going uphill in the structure. But once you get to the floor where you want to park, there is plenty of parking space without feeling crammed ! The Plaza Theater itself is an old building. But it has really interesting architecture, exterior design and interior design that make it very nostalgic ! The ceiling is very celestial , with a heavenly aura :) ! It was my first time seeing a show there :D ! I watched "Mean Girls" the musical on Sat (4/6) for the matinee showing and absolutely it :D ! It really brought back wonderful memories of the original 2004 movie starring Lindsay Lohan and Rachel McAdams :) ! The Broadway cast was absolutely spectacular :D ! I purchased an orchestra seat for myself since I went solo and got to meet and chat with a super nice family sitting next to me who have season tickets to the Plaza :) ! I didn't really try any of the speciality drinks or snacks. But a lot of people were in line for these! I may try these on a future outing to the Plaza because they have some exciting shows and concerts coming up later this year :D ! I mean, let's be honest, El Paso is a loooooong dusty road away from Broadway. But ya know, we do the best we can out here. So keep that opening statement in mind; El Paso Texas is not Broadway. So for those of us that have caught shoes out there, just don't expect that type of experience. With that being said, the Plaza Theatre in El Paso, next to San Jacinto Plaza and surrounded by a lot of downtown restaurants, is really quite nice. It's a very old (but well maintained) theatre. Walking in and just looking around is always kinda fun. You can tell you're in a piece / place of history. The actual theatre / seating area is pretty nice too. It's well decorated and taken care of. The acoustics are fine. Views are fine from almost anywhere in the place. The events that come into town vary, as they do anywhere. But we do get some very nice off Broadway musicals that come through. That's why we go - for the musicals. We've seen really great productions of Hairspray, Waitress etc... and have tickets for upcoming ones likes the classic CATS, and even newer more modern ones like Hamilton! Concerts and traditional musical acts (bands) also come here too. There's always something going on at the Plaza Theatre. It's worth dressing up and going out to. Just keep in mind, not everyone here in the old Sun City knows the kind of etiquette one might expect while watching a show ... it is what it is though. Honestly, I'm not even sure it's El Paso anymore and not just THE World, period. But please expect people to have everything from cell phones ringing, babies crying, getting up and scootching last everyone single person in the row to loudly go use the restroom before intermission even... and of course the loud chatting. But again, I've noticed more and more from coast to coast, it's not just El Paso and the theatre, this kinda of (lack of) etiquette / manners / behavior out in public (depending on situation and location), seems to be everywhere with everyone. It has been years since it's restoration, but the maintenance to this historic building is highly maintained. It truly is an architectural gem. I've attended seven events at the Plaza Theatre. I had the pleasure of seeing comedian Ralph Barbosa last night and the experience was amazing. The theatre had stellar staff who showed the upmost professionalism while attending to guests and keeping things orderly during the show. If you're lucky enough to go to the Plaza for a show of any kind I'd recommend sitting in the mezzanine level. This provided my party and I the perfect view of the stage and the beautiful decorations the theatre has. The ambience is unmatched. Someone in my party described it as "giving Cheesecake Factory" in the best way. Take that as you will. With a beautiful painted blue night sky with stars shining down on the talent, a night at the Plaza is truly one of best experiences one can have while in El Paso. read more

This theater is absolutely beautiful. Every seat is good. I came for a girls night out and after dinner at Cafe Central we watched the show "In the Mood". It was a great '40s Big Band era show with singing and dancing- wow these folks were very talented! My friends and I came dressed in era hairdos and makeup and had a blast. I have seen other shows here including Pat Benetar (I am a big classic rock fan). The location is convenient to restaurants and parking- as it should be for the true urban theater experience. People tell me all the time that there is nothing to do in El Paso. I say: turn off the TV, leave the house, and spend a few dollars to see a show! read more

We attended the El Paso film festival, which had screenings in the Philanthropy theater in the Plaza, BEAUTIFUL Space, and the in-house theater staff were always welcoming. If you have never been definitely book tickets for a show, it's a very special place. read more

This theatre is beautiful. The architecture is gorgeous. I love the details from the Juliet balconies to the glimmering "stars" on the ceiling. The pipe organ is an interesting attraction in itself. The restrooms are clean & updated with large mirrors & seating areas for those waiting on someone. One of the restrooms even has vanity sitting, a lovely feature. I have been enjoying the theatre since its reopening in 2006. There are several events I attend yearly & would recommend a visit. I've been to concerts here, which is cool because it feels very intimate. One of the singers I saw even did a few songs with no microphone & we could hear him perfectly. The Film Festival is so much fun too! I especially like when they invite stars from different movies to speak about the film. They have all types of shows, one year I saw The Blue Man Group! Note: For those who are mobility impaired there's at least 2 ways of getting into the theatre that I know of. In the front lobby area there's a lift & elevator to the upper floors. It's just to the left of the front stairs. The second entrance that I know of is through the W. Main Dr. between the back of the Museum of Art & the Plaza, the entrance is marked with a disability plaque. There are no stairs at that entrance. read more

Growing up in El Paso, I had made multiple trips to the Plaza Theater as a kid. The Plaza Theater does stay very involved in the local community and takes a huge interest in educating young minds on all the different aspects of performing arts (seriously, every aspect of performing arts...plays, musicals, movies, and everything in between). Prior to yesterday, I had always felt the Plaza was really getting worn down. Taking a trip to the Plaza Theater to watch West Side Story, I was pleasantly surprised that El Paso has not given up on this theater and with the help of many supporter the Plaza was able to make renovations like replacing all of the seats (it was badly needed). It's an extremely amazing feeling to watch a packed show at the Plaza, it kind of just reminds you that the community will not let this staple vanish. Like I said, I did go for the showing of West Side Story for the Classic Film Festival and so I'm basing this review on that experience (although I've always had great experiences at the Plaza). I love that the Plaza went above and beyond to make this experience more than just watching a movie. Before the movie started there was a Q and A with Rita Moreno that completely changed the experience. Listening to Rita talk about filming and how she felt portraying Anita, it just kind of stuck with you throughout the movie. And I will say Rita Moreno was the perfect choice to kick off the Film Festival because she is extremely entertaining. I think the Q and A did run a little bit longer than the theater intended, but honestly the whole night could've been an interview with Rita Moreno and I wouldn't have minded. The volunteers and employees were happy to be there and that's not something I can say about every venue in El Paso. Beyond being helpful, they were all smiling and weren't afraid to hold a conversation with patrons. Of course this is what should be expected of any event staff, but it's so unusual for El Paso that it's worth mentioning. Even the volunteers weren't afraid to step up and be problem solvers. Everything about the Plaza Theater is up to par with what you'd expect in a theater. There's plenty of seating. The decor is beautiful. The stage can be seen from any seat in the house and it's large enough to host just about anything. If you're visiting (or have never been), it's a must to go to the Plaza. Check Ticketmaster to see what shows are at the Plaza. And don't worry if you're not big on Broadway productions, they're always having other kind of shows. If you're lucky enough to be in EP when the Classic Film Festival is happening you have to check it out (there's tons of different FREE showings too). read more

This is a beautiful beautiful spot in downtown El Paso. It took years to restore to the way it is now. The Plaza Theatre was once a beautiful movie theater circa the 40's or 50's. I hear the stories from my grandparents. They tell me about going to the Plaza to watch movies quite often as children. My grandmother worked at the Kress building (also in the area). She used to go on dates there with my grandfather. They'll be married 60 years this year! I've been to the Plaza many times and always enjoy it. I took my grandmother to see those people dance to Irish tunes. I forget the name of the show but she loved it. We like coming to the Plaza Film Festival in early August. They show movies inside and outside of the building for a week or so. Hollywood celebrities come and speak at the event every year. I've had opportunities to attend concerts and shows here. Some that come to mind: Portugal the Man, Chicago (the band) and "Wicked." I know I've been to other shows but I can't remember. The acoustics are fantastic! I would love to see a jazz band perform here. I also wouldn't mind seeing Harry Connick Jr., Michael Buble or even Dave Koz (he comes around Christmas typically). FYI- They've all been here. The seats are pretty comfy. They could use a bit more padding. It's pricey to see a show here. The drinks are also not cheap! You aren't allowed to take any foods or drinks in there. Would I come back? If it's free or someone I really want to see is in town. If you can't get to a show, just come and check out a piece of El Paso history. I believe they offer free tours but...I'm sure they take small donations. read more

Oh to step back into time! The Plaza is a nice little trip back to when you went to an actual theater to see a show! The venue is full of historic memorabilia and the architecture really makes you feel like you stepped back into the roaring '20s but with all the amenities of the 21st century. The theater is large enough to hold a decent amount of people but not large enough to leave you with a bad seat...maybe only wishing you had slightly better seats, being the shows are live and all. The seats are comfortable but are historic and so they run on the small side, which can leave you bumping thighs with your neighbor if they run on the larger side. But I'm 6'4" and other than needing to stand to let others pass by, I fit comfortably. The wifey and I have been seeing broadway shows here for a couple of shows and, though our seats are in the back, the view has been good and the shows have been awesome! High quality singing, dancing, and performances! Now with the downtown revival, little spots are popping up all over the area with a Starbucks and a new TCBY yogurt right next door. Restaurants from high end (Dome/Anson 11/ Café Central to the more casual Sparrows) are also in the immediate area. If you ever have the chance to go to a live show here, do it and make a night of the local restaurants in the area! You won't be disappointed! read more

First time at the Plaza Theatre and it is an amazing venue. However, I must comment on the support given to the refreshments counter. Only 3 servers to help hundreds of people in line. Missed at least 10 minutes of an EXPENSIVE ballet due to the ridiculous wait times. Surely, 1 or 2 more servers could have been hired or any other of the 2 standby supporting staff (who was busy with their phones) could have at least helped alleviate the lines by selling Water. We love the Plaza Theatre! What's not to like? The ambiance and decor really sets this renovated theatre apart from others we have been to. We have especially enjoyed the Plaza Classic Film Festival over the years. We do however feel there are times when the Plaza Theatre is being under utilized, especially considering the cost it took to renovate this place. It would be wonderful if they could do independent film nights at least once a month, this WAS a movie theatre after all. It would also be great if this could be used more as a community theatre, meaning, don't charge so much if someone would like to use it. There have been numerous times we have inquired about using it for filming (commercials, music videos) only to be told it would run us thousands of dollars. If we understand correctly, it was tax payers money that helped keep this place from being a pile of ruble. Minus one star for not sharing! read more

For my final review as a Yelper (at least for awhile, since my new job isn't conducive to going out), I'm going to review the location of my final Elite event: The Nutcracker. Three stars seems low, as I really enjoy this place, HOWEVER, there is something done here that is so small city, it has the potential to ruin shows, and sadly, this is not completely their fault.. But before I go into that, the positives. This place always seems clean and they have a plethora of events here, from ballet to Broadway to movies. If you sit towards the front and look to, their are stars twinkling in the ceiling (which you can donate towards and have someone's babe recognized). There are even trees on the inside, so it feels at times that you are outdoors watching an event. Bee yoo tee full. Most events start on time, as far as I can see; if they are late, it's only a short while. That being said (here comes the negative, sorry Plaza!), they REALLY need to control their patrons better. I understand that you want to seat everyone who paid, but there were people still strolling in 20-30 minutes late! In a bigger city, if you're not in by the time it starts, you're out of luck until intermission. I missed a good chunk of the show, because I was sitting on the side and everyone who passed by blocked the view. Three final educational points to patrons: Don't bring a baby to a show. Don't use your cellphone throughout the show.. Very distracting. Don't leave the theatre during curtain call; that tells the cast that you didn't like the show and discourages events like this from returning. So as I doff my Elite hat, which I know someone will take good care of, please remember, we are finally an Elite city, let's act like it. read more

Plaza theater is a beautiful throw back to a magical past. A lot of people spent a lot of time and money restoring it to its former splendor. I would love to give it a 5 star review and would if not for for one thing that affects me personally--it is not handicapped friendly. I'm sure it is ADA compliant or it would not have received a certificate of occupancy but that doesn't make it friendly. From the main lobby, restrooms are either two flights up or down. There is an elevator but it is very small and when an event has a big crowd it is damn near impossible to get in. The auditorium acoustics are excellent and most seats have good views of the stage. But... Orchestra level seats are cramped if you have long legs and after a couple hours get real uncomfortable. Mezzanine seats are roomier but the trade off is distance from the stage. I guess I'll have to determine which is more important on a show by show basis. There are several fine restaurants within a short walk so you can make a complete evening or afternoon of it. read more

Even though I walk out of there feeling like I've done 100 lunges, I love the Plaza. I'm pretty tall, so the space is pretty limited. I have seen everything from EPSO, traveling Broadway shows, movies, to bands at the Plaza. I am in love with it. It's maintained very well, and the restoration they did was gorgeous. If you look up during the performance, you will see lights in the ceiling, they're supposed to be what the stars in the El Paso sky look like. The Plaza does give tours to groups, and it is incredibly informative and makes you appreciate the Plaza even more. I would recommend becoming familiar with theater etiquette, because they do strictly adhere to it. If you haven't gone there, you need to go to see this piece of El Paso history. read more

If you've never been to the classic film festival then you're missing out on a truly special El Paso event. It's not an indie festival although they do showcase local art and works but it's always fun! The theater itself is beautiful. The people in charge of renovating that east mills corner have really outdone themselves--many thanks to the El Paso Community Foundation. When the lights go off you're transported to the Baroquian era in Paris, France with its beautiful starry ceilings and the incredible rococo style architecture. The screen is huge and the stage is very roomy as well. And let's not forget about the Mighty Wurlitzer Organ. I wish I knew the name of the lady who plays this beast of an organ but she does an incredible job. (I'm not sure if multiple people play this thing, but every time I have gone, it is usually the same woman). If you've always wanted to go to a broadway production, then just check the plaza's schedule. There is always something going on there. read more

After visiting The Plaza Theatre, it is clear why this is a grand historic landmark in El Paso. I have not had the pleasure of seeing a live performance here yet but did attend a tour of the facilities last year. I enjoy history so this was a perfect spot to indulge. Our tour guide was an older woman who had been volunteering at the plaza for quite a number of years. She seemed to know the Plaza's history well. (Apparently volunteers are very active in their role at the Plaza.) We were lead through the building and told all about the fascinating background that included restoration projects, important contributors, and other fun tidbits of the past. The originality of the architecture and decor makes you feel like you are stepping back in time. It truly allows you to appreciate the devotion of The El Paso Community Foundation and individuals within the community who have kept the Plaza's essence of art and history alive. Millions of dollars have went into restoring the Plaza Theatre to its grand beauty. From my understanding there is an area on the roof where music and other performances are held as well although we were unable to see it that day. In August the Plaza hosts a Film Festival. Of course, performances and plays are held throughout the year. read more

Can't believe I didn't write a review when I first came here in 2009 for the Classic Film Festival. We were in town for this year's festival, so we managed to fit in a movie. The theater has been beautifully restored. The screen is HUGE so we even had a good view of the movie from the balcony. They offer various shows/ concerts here during the year as well. If you get a chance, go see something at this theater. It is a neat experience. read more

Not a bad seat in the house! Will be back to see another show. I'm embarrassed to say I had never been there but I will be back, it was that cool! Women's bathroom on the lower level has amazing mirrors. Although the line was horrendous you forget about it, because you get caught up in the nostalgia of the theatre. Saw an outstanding concert performance last night of Sibelius by violin virtuoso Chee-Yun. Was amazed how well kept and beautiful a venue the plaza theater was, especially given its location. Obviously the sound quality wasn't perfect for a classical concert, but I'm not expecting the Avery Fischer Hall in El Paso. But this was probably as nice and charming of a concert venue that you can get in a city like EP. I'll definitely make it a point to see the next decent performance that they decide to hold at the plaza. read more

For El Paso, I couldn't have been more surprised. What a cool old venue! Meticulously maintained, and way more charm than I expected. We are still new to the area so I continue to find gems, and I appreciate every one of them! Saw Eddie Vedder here, and had the best time! Drinks were average priced with long lines, but bathrooms were immaculate and there was helpful staff everywhere. It was great to see such an eclectic crowd in one place, that is one thing I miss with going out in El Paso. I look forward to visiting the Plaza again soon! read more

This is a beautiful theater and I would have loved to have gone back some time, but I had a pretty crummy first experience here. The security guard turned me away because I was wearing a chain wallet. I'll admit, it's completely dated and not the most fashionable, but it's far from being a weapon. Never in the 10 years that I've been wearing this thing have I ever had a problem getting into a venue; not in New York City, not in France, not in Japan, not in Colombia, and not in the several high security buildings I access regularly as part of my job. Yes, I wear a chain wallet to work, with my suit and tie. No complaints from federal security screeners to date. The security guard at the Plaza Theater however, is completely dedicated to making El Paso safer, one chain wallet at a time. He tells me to take it off, and then tells me that they can't hold it for me, that I should find a tree or a trash can to hide it in, or walk it back to my car. I'm not a drug dealer running from the cops with 2 pounds of meth, so I went back to my car. Made me a good 15 minutes late for the show. To the previous reviewer who complained about all the late entries: maybe they got turned away too? Maybe they were wearing long metal necklaces or steel-toed boots or sharp septum jewelry and had to find a gutter to stash them in real quick. Or maybe it was just me. Who knows? I certainly won't be back to find out. read more
