Finding the shuttle pick ups was a joke , not related to the event new anything around , around we go !Finally waited 25 minutes for the bus that runs every 12 minutes , leaving to get back to our car we wanted in line in hot sun for 55 minutes ! Not being as agile as I once was hanging on to a pole on this overpacked bus was like riding the Cyclone at Coney Island I am fiairly good shape and took all they threw at me! I usually drop about $200 to 250 on food maybe a drink , not this time all the picnic tables where gone no place to eat in the blazing sun . No Seat No Eat . I left early and luckily I was only out $15 bucks for parking , I was lucky to get away with my life ... no I mean no acclomidations for Seniors at all ! First Musikfest since 2019 and I was glad to be back. As a millenial, it was amazing see Ja Rule and Ashanti. So much 2000s nostalgia. They sounded great and the 70 minutes they were on flew by. The opening act was good, but it was really unnecessary to have a 2 hour opening act! Concert ended at 10:15 which is nice and early compared to other concerts but still. Doesnt Artsquest want people to spend more time on the north and south sides supporting small businesses and/or the casino? Opening act should of been on from 7-7:30. Ja and Ashanti at 8 and done by 9/9:15. If pays to be an Artsquest member if you can afford the $200 donation. Early access to buy tickets meaning front row seats, free rides to the north and south side buses and other small perks. Also free Chriskindlmarket for the holidays. Security was much better than 2019 but there was still an isolated shooting a day later after I went. I get that the police cant be everywhere since the festival is so huge, but I would have central location entrances like new years eve at times square. read more

Hello, I am writing to express my disappointment in how the Walker Hayes concert was handled last night, Monday, August 7, 2023. Musikfest has been a tradition for my husband and I for over 20 years. We had one of our first dates there, faithfully went every year, took our children there, saw various concerts from ZZ Top to The Band Perry and everyone in between. Every year, we noticed an increase in prices but stood behind the event and the ArtsQuest organization. Now on to the Walker Hayes concerts - first and foremost - IT SHOULD HAVE BEEN CANCELLED AND REFUNDS GIVEN. If the Phillies cancel their game due to the weather, you should have followed suit. We arrived at 6pm, waited in line to get in and after getting a drink arrived at our seats. At 6:50pm, we were informed that we needed to evacuate the area and go to the ArtsQuest center. Once we arrived at the ArtsQuest center, we were crammed like sardines into the building with no air conditioning and no public WIFI. WIFI was necessary as to get updates on what was going on. We were unable to get into your app, etc. and your staff had no idea what was going on. After 2 hours, we saw people filling the streets and followed. We walked up to the venue and saw one of the metal bleachers blown over and the police yelling to get on the sidewalk. They said that everyone should form a line but no one knew where the line was. We tried to ask an officer who was incredibly snarky and rude. We ended up leaving and never got to see the concert. I paid $158.00 for tickets I didn't get to use, $10 for parking and $22 for 2 drinks. I feel robbed. If safety was paramount, you would have cancelled the event or given people the option of a refund. I have tickets for Train this Sunday and am not looking forward to it as I am expecting the same greed and rudeness, I experienced last night. If you are somewhat outgoing like myself, you will meet some really cool people and bands and artiest of all types. This 10-day marathon of musical talent is an impressive array of nonstop music scattered among the streets and in the park/ open spaces of Bethlehem. It is amazing that it is free, aside from the big headliners at one of the stages. They have several stages and hundreds of performers, so there is something interesting for everyone. The talent is overwhelming, and the crowd enthusiasm abounds to meet this musical display. You can park at satellite lots and take a $3 shuttle bus, or find parking somewhere downtown in a garage for $10 or on the street. Bring your MusikFest mug to refill with beer, as these mugs are staples among the attendees. Lines get longer for food and beverage as the day turns to night. The crowds get rowdier because the musical excitement just seems to amp up! Most venues are under tents with plastic seats and some tables. It's an incredibly user and family friendly set-up that is just impressive for a free event. Purchases for food and beverages require tickets- so be sure to get those before standing in line for anything. Plan your time, as there is no way to see everything you'd like with music happening at each venue all day and evening long- with the exception of set changes and sound checks as one performer wraps up and another rolls in. Beware of the food- it is not for the health conscious or dietary restricted folks. They have food like burgers, fish tacos, turkey legs, chicken fingers, Philly cheese steak, fried Oreos and sweets on a stick, fried green beans and pickles, fries, blooming onions, nachos, beef tacos, cheese quesadillas, chicken teriyaki noodles (there is a seemingly veg version but not vegan), southwestern corn on the cob (butter), cotton candy, kettle corn, ice cream, hot dogs, corn dogs and well... You get the picture! Seriously though- go for the music. You will not be disappointed in this slice of Americana on a 10-day musical plate. read more

Musikfest was amazing! A Tuesday night and it was packed with people everywhere. Bethlehem really knows how to throw a party. Great food options and lots of good drinks everywhere. Music venues were plentiful with all kinds of live music from reggae, to rock to country and pop. Even through a strong rain fall people kept coming and drinking and having fun. The vastness of this event is what makes it truly amazing. They offer parking and really nice busses to get you to and from the event which makes for an excellent time without the hassle of dealing with traffic or looking for parking. They made me a fan and I will definitely be back next year. read more

I have LOTS to say about Musikfest. I've been attending about 6 of the past 8 years. WIll try and condense. HIGHLIGHTS: --- Free Live Music --- - I love being able to walk 1 minute and seeing a totally different genre of music. If I'm not enjoying, walk 1 more minute, see something else. - Cover bands, international music, intimate acoustic sets, sometimes a totally great indie band you've been following for years. It's a family friendly event, so there's a few genres and styles that don't get as much attention. --- Street Food + Beer --- - Aww Shucks Roaster Corn is the local stand out delicacy here. Cost $5 and is a requirement as part of the full experience. - There's tons more options, from your typical fair food and deep fried oreos, to things like popcorn chicken served in a waffle cone. Or a pie served in a waffle cone. Or a waffle, topped with ice cream (there's non waffle-y items too) - Buy a mug to be part of the crowd. Refill it at one of the tents or go to Brew Works or one of the restaurants nearby for possibly cheaper options on beer. --- Arts --- - Usually there's a pretty cool art installation. - Local vendors, mostly the same from year-to-year, but great if you're looking for a unique gift. I bought a couple of dreamcatchers. --- People Watching --- - One of my favorite parts of the fest is seeing all different types of people being literally moved by the music. Seeing older people dancing really makes me happy. Not gonna focus much on the cons. Sure, it is very hot and almost entirely an outdoor event. Stay hydrated. Instead of buying $3.50 water, maybe try bringing your own or buying a $1 water from shops on Main St. Sure, there's a lot a lot of people. Certain shows get very crowded. Certain people get very rude. It obviously takes a large effort from a great group of people. I met some really nice folks this year and will continue to support and attend this fest. read more

I love Musikfest so much. So many free music acts and street performers to enjoy. I have small kids so there is even a Family area with crafts you can make sponsored by Crayola. There are also 'rides' down in that area too that are insanely overpriced. Yes food and beer is expensive (example ice cream is $6 but the portion is huge) but if you search you can find some places with deals. Like today I found that the Hotel Bethlehem had a tent with $1 sodas and waters....a steal compared to the other places that charge you like $3 and 4 bucks. And they took cash. Mostly everywhere else require tickets. Search local businesses that sell beer on the regular for a mug refill for maybe a dollar or so cheaper but for better beer than Miller Lite. Festplatz is the main stage under the bridge that is televised on the local tv stations. This platz usually has polka or a good rocking band. It also has a nice dance floor of you are looking to tear up the dance floor. 1/3 of Musikfest is now located on the South Side of Bethlehem. It's also where you will find the paid concerts. I don't usually go over there unless I have a purpose. It's quite small on that side. Have fun and drink up! Bonus tip for a cheap person- Fill up your mug with your own beer upon arrival to save yourself some cash. If your really cheap, carry around a backpack of beer cans and secretly refill your own mug in the porta potties. read more

We have come at least once year for the past 6 or 7 years after taking a hiatus for at least a dozen years. We keep coming back because it is an overall great event. Is the food expensive? Yes, but there is a great variety and enough gluten-free options to keep my wife happy. Is the beer a little expensive? Yes, but with the refillable mug it is not as bad as an event in a big city venue. Is the parking tough? Not if you choose to do the free parking with shuttle. Or get their early and park in a garage for flat $10. Is it hot and crowded? Yes it is August and the crowds are what make the event viable. I was born in Bethlehem, Pa. I have been going to muskfest since it started. This year be it Covid related or not, it was the worst ever. Felt like a ghost town, the food was OMG way to expensive. I just could not feel the music in the air. Very few street performers. I heard they are taking 40% from the vendors. Needs a better beer selection and more German food... Musikfest now has two parts. Be sure to get over to the north side to check out the old blast furnaces. it's historical and should be experienced. You can access a commentary on your phone and listen as you observe. I love to go to Musikfest for the great music and food, however, there is not enough seating, especially after you get food, no where to sit. This is a huge downer for me because I have to sit often because of health reasons. The Southside is even worse because they don't have enough restrooms there, besides lack of adequate seating. Also they have a huge parking area reserved for handicap and permits that's never full, but they won't allow anyone else to park there. So parking is a big issue at Musikfest too. I love the music and food, but hate just about everything else. If you don't mind crushing crowds, insufficient parking, seating and restrooms, then this place is for you. read more

Musikfest is the heart and soul of Bethlehem city since the Bethlehem Steel went down. I grew up in Bethlehem, and attended the past 7 Musikfests, even volunteering at one. We had international travelers every year. Bethlehem is packed during Musikfest, so there is no place to park for free. Park outside of town and take the trolley or be prepared to pay for parking. So much musical variety, there are different sections of the festival, each with a theme. If you have children, Banana Island is the place to take them. Different areas to suite all musical tastes, and the food is to die for. There's even one stand now that sells deep-fried cheesecake on a stick! Don't eat more than one, believe me. :) read more

2011 note: This review is somewhat outdated because of the new south side locations but some points are still valid, so, I'm leaving it as it is until I experience 2011's fest... I've been to every single Musikfest. 25 years. Holy crap. Since I grew up with it, I have a love-hate relationship with the festival. On one hand, I love that it showcases our beautiful city and crams so many musical performances into 10 days it makes my head spin. On the other hand, I have five fingers. No, seriously, on the other hand, it's smelly! And since I'm no longer 23, I tend to stay away from situations where sweaty shirtless drunk men pour beer on me. Kinda takes away from enjoying your band of choice. Tips for festing: 1. Buy a Musikfest mug with lid. You can get these filled at various watering holes in town cheaper than you can at the festival. Or, fill your mug at home/in your car with your favorite beverage and bring it to the festival with you. Enjoy your vodka. 2. Don't let it bother you that you're paying $5 for an ear of corn, get over it. But if it does bother you, buy a taco and a Portuguese donut from The Melting Pot, the stand operated by Holy Infancy Church, located at Plaza Tropical, for a good cause. 3. Best bathrooms: Dankeplatz. Pretend you have to attend an event there (it's near Riverplace) and enjoy the sweet-smelling rest-room- trailer with running water and mirrors. You have to be very smooth to get past the "bouncers" but that's easy to do, just look at the sign and say, "I'm with company xyz meeting in the Lehigh tent." The bathroom is hidden in between the two Dankeplatz tents, behind the fountain and shrubs. On the South Side, go to Comfort Suites (pretend you're a guest and/or stop in the bar for a nightcap) or Home & Planet (great bathroom created by Mr. Imagination - and then buy something.) 4. Parking: In the evenings, save yourself the headache of trying to get a space on the street on the North side. Either park on the South Side on the street across the river FREE after 6:00 and walk or trolley across the Fahy Bridge to the fest, or take a shuttle from a parking lot. It's not that far and if you're gonna eat bratwurst and funnel cake you could use a little walk. 5. Free handouts (samples) can usually be found at the junction of Plaza Tropical and Festplatz. 6. Polka at Festplatz at least once, even if you've never done it before. 7. Make sure to buy stuff not only from the festival stands but also from the shops on Main St, Broad St and also on the South Side on 3rd. Lots of good stuff and you can stimulate the local economy! We love that. 8. Wear comfortable shoes, because you'll need to walk up hills, on gravel, grass, hay, and also try to dance while drinking. Not the best place for 6-inch heels. Oh, also - beware of the tent stakes and ropes. Speaking from experiences (not good ones.) 9. Going to a show at Riverplace? Pack an Off! towelette to keep the bugs off. 10. Be a kind 'fester. At the end of your raucous evening, don't puke on doorsteps or throw beer cans into yards of our neighborhoods. The city places extra trash containers around town so find one and puke in there, or at least aim for the street. The townies would sure appreciate that. read more

Musikfest is one of my favorite things ever. I've been going since '84 (basically my entire life.) It has seen changes throughout the years, naturally, but the bones are still there. It is still a free festival packed with free entertainment (take your pick from the 10-or-so stages at any given time!) Good food, good beer, good atmosphere. Plenty of shade, plenty of things to look at and do. To anyone complaining about the price of food or drink, or complaining about having to use tickets: Just stay home. Simple as that. Or you can eat and drink before going. That's the beauty of 'Fest! And always remember your basic 'Fest rules: Invest in a mug for beer refills (You get like 6 extra ounces!) Avoid Main Street after 7pm (except to go to Leiderplatz) Find a chauffeur or take a shuttle to avoid parking headaches (Or arrive nice and early to find some free quality parking!) read more

My boyfriend took me to the last day of Musikfest when I came to visit him. I wasn't so sure about it when he told me about it, because we have similar things at home that I haven't been so amused with, but then I actually got there. I couldn't believe how huge this thing was. There are a lot of really different and interesting acts, some cool arts and crafts booths (handmade djembes and doumbeks! some sick shit), and tons of really great food. Also tons of prominently featured beer stands, hahaha. I didn't get any beer, but they have this mug that you can refill and get more beer for a little less, I think. Since 1984, the city of Bethlehem has been boasting and hosting Musikfest. I have only been twice but have had marvelous times. Quaint Bethlehem is absolutely adorable. The nightlife is large for this old steel town with streets conjoining bars stocked up high. I even belted out (scarily) karaoke - buttercup after death thrash. Oh the memories. The carnival is pretty cool too with mass vendors from all over and all walks. Those spray fans are such genious that I want one in my living room. The Moravian Religion is very similar to the PA Dutch and there are plenty of little finds such as boutiques to historical museums into Lehigh pubs and river fun'ness. I actually found and purchased 'hemp' pretzels. One would think it was owned and operated by a bunch of stoners however it was two little old ladies, boasting about how hemp is revolutionary and actually very nutritious. Did you know that hemp could actually fuel a car? Neither did I! Did I mention it's quite delicious? It is. It really is. Back to the music. The most important aspect of this is that you can actually walk around with beer. This is super. I mean really fucking super. The black crows were headlining which will give you an idea of the types of bands that they have there. It's about a ten day sprawl which starts in early august of every year. Last year I saw Alice in Chains. hummmph I love Jerry, I love Jerry, I love Jerry. BC isn't really my thing but Jerry Cantrell is, did I mention that already? Ive been now two years running and the day after the music I enjoy wandering around and checking out the old architecture. Its amazing and amazingly inexpensive. It's not what it used to be. Maybe it will just take time, but the disbursement of the venues to now mostly the South Side has really changed the logistics of walking around & easily shifting from one spot to another to catch the acts you want to see. I get that it probably had gotten too big & that they had to go all in with the whole Steel Stacks venture, but this is the first year ever that I'm really not looking forward to it & probably won't do much of it at all vs. taking the whole or most of the week off in the past & just screwing around all week at the 'fest. The bands booked have always been hit or miss (I'm talking about the free shows mainly though the pay shows are basically the same). Not enough original rock or indie music. More Los Straitjackets & less polka, please. Too much blues rock in general. The lineup this year (2012) looks especially uninspiring. We'll see where it goes from here, but the idea of catching buses, trolleys, etc. (and waiting for them with droves of others) really doesn't turn me on. I'll probably stop in for some Aw Shucks corn with the works, but pass on most of the rest of the festivities this year. Kind of a bummer. I'm hopeful the 'fest will reinvent itself again down the road. Right now it's stuck in a period of losing it's luster. read more

This is quite an event that takes place in the charming town of Bethlehem. I thoroughly enjoyed my time at the festival, but I do feel that Musikfest is a bit of a misnomer as the music seemed be just one aspect of the festival as opposed to the main attraction. I guess that is not really a problem though. From the perspective of a classical musician, it would have been cool if they had had a string quartet or something similar performing, but perhaps that is not very festival-like. (I heard they do have some performances in Moravian College, so maybe that would fit the bill.) I would go back just for the food! (But not the beer...) They had a great selection of local restaurants and sabra had a free promotional event. I wish I had fasted for a few days before the festival so I could have filled up more! My only real complaint is that you could not use cash in the festival. You could only use tickets. This means you either have to keep returning to the ticket booth once you run out or by a lot and risk not using them. I do not care for that system. Also, be aware that beverages are sold for $2.50 in the festival, but you can easily find $1 waters around the edges of the festival. read more

Musikfest 2019 was cool- but free concerts were just OK. Not enough country and rock music. The low rating was the alcohol beverage rip off. Not only was the price of $13 high, you could not even taste any vodka - only club soda. I saw them pour vodka- it was either a very short pour or they watered down the fifth of vodka. HUGE event. Lots of teenagers, shady corners to beware of, high prices for some food and drinks, and usually a large press of crowds. This event however is fun, lively, great for groups, and something out of the routine. Must haves: your wits, comfortable shoes, money, empty stomach for endless foods and drinks, money, go with the flow attitude, money, patience, did I mention money? After 90 minutes we decided to leave and when we got back to where we parked our car was gone along with the many others that had parked on that street. How could this happen? Well we looked around and found that there was a sign that read: Tow Away Zone after 3PM. The sign was only about 4 feet high, so you would only see it if you parked right in front of it! At first i was so hesitant to attend this music festival but my friends dragged me into this and oh boy it was such a great experience. With so many budding and famous music groups, everything was great. One thing that stood out was the cast in bronze group where the guy plays an ancient instrument made out of big bells. That was astonoshing and never seen before kind of experience. The food, the beer was great. The rain was a spoil sport for some time but the sprit and enthusiasm among the crowd was fabulous. This event is Amazing! Im from RI and my girlfriends parents live near this festival. Visit the in-laws and drink beer outside all day?!... Sounds like a good mix to me! I really cant explain how impressed I am with how large and awesome this event is. We have gone 4 times now And i don't think we've ever been able to cover the whole thing. Buy a souvenir mug for $10 get it filled for $6- $8 just about anywhere (24oz). Not only are there beer tents(LQ and wine too) everywhere, but the restaurant's (with a larger selection) will also fill up your beer mugs. There is also music EVERYWHERE! Very impressed with the organizers of this event. It's very well run. We use the satellite parking and take the bus in and it's a breeze. Everyone is very friendly and well informed on the venue. They did have a bit of a jam this year with shuttles between sides that I think they could improve, but overall it's well organized. They have a great variety of music and I haven't heard one act that I didn't care for. My only complaint is the mug. They're so big and heavy. I personally would like a smaller option, like the ones they first had when muskiest began, that may or may not be an insulated (but has a lid). No chance you will get me to go to this overpriced event. First you have to park miles away, to what walk around and see the sites and sounds. Oh now you want to eat or drink, make sure you get your tickets. Yes you have to get tickets. You can't walk up to a vendor and buy food or drink. Gotta get tickets first. Soda is $3. Just to give you an idea. The thing that really pisses me off is local businesses come in and charge any where from 25-40% more for the same food at their normal store.
