At first glance this place is beyond amazing! Initially when my family and I was touring the place…read morethe staff said all of the right things. The place is gorgeous and modern. However that faded really fast. After my dad was admitted and he received a room his care started to slowly fade. If he pushes the nurses button sometimes it takes 45 minutes to and hour for a response. I know nothing is perfect but it's scary to wait so long, because what if he really needs emergency care? Although, the nurses casually discuss how they don't like their jobs I can still see hope in this place. I hope this is just a weird week. I know that we all have bad days.

Serious concerns regarding cleanliness and basic patient care…read more I visited my aunt here regularly, mostly during the evening hours, and frequently observed a concerning lack of proper care. It was often clear from the odor that she was not being changed or cleaned on a regular schedule, which, unfortunately, resulted in her developing painful sores. To get her basic needs met, I often had to actively hunt down the nursing staff to request diaper changes. While a few individual nurses truly went above and beyond and showed genuine compassion, the overall systemic issues are hard to ignore. Beyond the care deficits, the patient rooms rarely seemed properly cleaned or disinfected, creating an unsanitary environment. I strongly advise any family considering this facility to do extensive research, check state inspection reports, and speak directly with current patients' families before placing a loved one here.

I think it is fabulous that inpatients of the AbilityLab participate in their therapy sessions right alongside the scientists and clinicians who are doing the research. It was fascinating to see, and to get to be a part of that research, if only for a day or two. The facility is world-renown and I have several friends who have been patients at the AbilityLab for intensive rehab, and had great outcomes and only positive things to say. My only mistake was that I accidentally parked in the wrong parking structure- so be sure to look for the correct signage and park only onsite if you want to get the parking validation discount ($15). Thankfully, the understanding manager of the parking structure next door was very kind when I explained that I accidentally parked in the wrong structure, and she approved that I could have the $15 fee instead of the $70 that I was going to be charged! So be sure to park in the correct location, or it could be a very costly visit!! Oh, and the cafeteria!!! Be sure to stop into the cafeteria for a great meal and the view!! Wow. I can't believe the view. There is a chef who prepares a hot meal and I was able to get take-away for my kid: a huge meal of ribs, mashed potatoes and green beans for just $12. Loved the salad bar, too. Very reasonable prices considering the location.

I'm not sure what parameters U.S. News and World Report used to arrive at their ranking. My stay at Shirley Ryan was not what I expected. It was frequently unpleasant and very stressful. I knew that their physical therapy and occupational therapy staff were supposed to be top-notch, and they are. It's the support staff services (nurses, techs) that can be dramatically improved. I was at Shirley Ryan approximately 1 month after spending 3 months at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. I frequently encountered rude and sometimes incompetent/untrained nurses and techs. I did not always get the same staff assigned, so I experienced several nurses and techs. Sadly, I rarely had staff assigned who did a great job and truly seemed to care about my recovery. The others appeared to see me as just a task they had to complete as part of their job, which they did not seem to like. My daily housekeeping staff was more pleasant than many of my nurse/tech caregivers. I'll refrain from naming those I consider the worst of the bunch. Just keep in mind that you'll likely encounter inconsistent and poor care from some of the Shirley Ryan nurses and techs. If so, don't hesitate to speak up to management (Charge Nurse, etc.) should you experience inadequate care.

At one point they couldn't handle my symptoms anymore and transferred me to northwestern memorial hospital where I left with a lot of trauma due to my experience. Not only did pathlight not listen to my concerns but they also made sure that the er would keep me there by using things I said during my therapy and completely twisted my words so I had to go inpatient. After fives day of inpatient I discharged myself from pathlight as I am better of at home then in that environment. Also The new medication they put me on caused me to get pneumonia a very rare side effect. When I called to ask for help from the person who PRESCRIBED it they said they couldn't do anything since I discharged. WORST EXPERIENCE OF MY LIFE! I left feeling worse and with new trauma. We travel to Chicago strictly for the care of Dr Hanauer because of the many GI specialist we have tried all across the country (and internationally), no other treatment plan works as well as that of Dr Hanauer. NM Hospital houses many super knowledgeable specialist, but anyone dependent on a service animal can tell you that many hospitals do nothing to help ease the complications and anxieties that come with being hospitalized with your service animal (the other Chicago hospital was unaware of ADA laws and refused to admit with the dog). For example, a Northwestern Patient Services Manager told me I would have to pay for this extremely high priced company to come walk the dog (her idea of support was to give me a paper with numbers of dog services - no help at all), but she never even mentioned the hospitals in-house dog walking volunteers!!! However, Ms LaKisha of Northwestern Memorial has alleviated this source of great fear and anxiety by volunteering to coordinate volunteer staff to come walk the dogs! Ms LaKisha of patient transportation is a legitimate ninja and master of transport services - including finding the time to genuinely care about patients AND service animals. If you have a service animal AND you require the best doctors in the country for ANY form of medical needs, this hospital is well worth the travel - just remember to directly call Patient Transport and ask for Ms LaKisha!!

While the staff overall was exceptional, I did encounter one individual--an Asian man--whose attitude was quite unprofessional; unfortunately, (he was racist) I cannot recall his name. Dr. Lisip and an outstanding physical therapist named Lindsay are remarkable in their approach. Although Lindsay can be tough, she is also incredibly effective and compassionate.
