I've been coming to the Muzzle Loader Cafe for close to 40 years now. When I was kid, my grandparents always took me here so I could have Hashbrowns and Gravy. Well it had been a while since I was back in Billings, but I knew I needed to go to the Muzzle Loader. There is a restaurant and a bar. We decided to sit in the bar. My uncle told me I needed to get a Caramel Roll and Chicken Fried Steak. Due to the volume of food, my uncle and I split the Chicken Fried Steak and my wife and I split the Caramel Roll. Honestly, this was one of the best Caramel Rolls I've ever had. It was soft, flavorful, and covered in caramel. This is a must have! You better get here early before they sell out. if you like Chicken Fried Steak, you won't be disappointed. This is not a typical Sysco Chicken Fried Steak. This is handcut, fried, and takes up most of the plate. The Hashbrown were fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The ambience in the bar was fine and the service was great. But the food here really stood out! This is a Billings institution! When you first walk in it looks like your run of the mill cafe. This restaurant is severely understaffed, one server for the whole place. I will say she was friendly. The food is marginal at best. It is frozen food that has been reheated. Other reviews raved about the chicken fried steak, which really isn't chicken fried steak. My daughter's was burnt and inedible. Was looking for a local place to have dinner. Stopped in and was pleasantly surprised. The waitress was so friendly and knowledgeable of the menu. We started off with real hand battered onion rings, which were fabulous. Had a cup of homemade tomato soup, which was to die for. Had the grilled chicken sandwich with garlic parmesan sauce. Like so many other reviewers, I cannot say enough good things about the staff. Jonella was well known among her customers, and at one point, she rallied the troops to sing Happy Birthday to Jessica, a regular customer to whom she presented a plate of French toast with lighted candles. It was fun to watch her visit with the local relatives as she served all of us in her section. I had a Super Biscuit which is an open face biscuit with a sausage patty on one side and your choice of egg, a side of hash browns, all smothered with sausage gravy. My coffee cup stayed full the entire meal, and I enjoyed my experience greatly. I will always stop here for breakfast wherever I visit Billings in the future. read more

Great food and absolutely astonishing service I loved getting the Sunshine Special I would absolutely recommend getting that and dipping the French toast into the strawberry's and not to mention that the price of the 5 meals that we got was a heck of a deal and the cinnamon roll that was the size of the plate was absolutely amazing with the soft roll and the much appreciated amount of icing that was put on top, overall if possible I would become a regular but sadly the 8 hour delivery drive that would be needed for me to become a regular is just too much for some food but if this establishment stays around for a nice long while I am definitely going to come back when I can. read more

This place was interesting for sure . The food wasn't all that bad. Our breakfast came out pretty fast. So that was definitely a plus. Now to the issues that we had. First off the waitress didn't get us any refills at all . You could obviously tell she was in a very bad mood and quite frankly, she was kinda of rude. More like... politely mean. First, I just want to say that the reviews on here that mention the nice wait staff are accurate. They are nice folks. Apparently at one point (now in the past), this place had really good food. But, as indicated when two of the people who would have been in our group bowed out and opted for a German restaurant in town, this place is not what it once was. Two in my party had prime rib, and neither was impressed. I had chicken fried steak, a wildly unhealthy but delightful meal when it's done right - and frankly, I think it has to be fairly difficult to not get it right. Unfortunately, the ingredients involved in this case were the main culprits - a very thin, shoe-leather-like piece of beef (as far as I know), with a thick, crusty coating, all of which was over cooked. Cheap eats, and great staff, so I tested them breakfast, lunch and dinner, have to say as I listed was which I liked the best there. I love gravy and hate the white wall paper paste you get in the south. This was not even close to the best but maybe 2 pepper shakes from being the bottom of the list. This would be best described as a cafe old school diner. It's worth a look for lunch and breakfast, even dinner unless your on a date, but if you been married for 20 years like me, its ok for the wife lol. read more

This was the spot for breakfast for years, was told by many different family members the quality has gone way down. I didn't believe them, they were right. The biscuits for the biscuits and gravy we old and we sat for a hour and a half waiting for our food. We're told eggs were backed up. Bacon was like a rock . Eggs were not cooked right. Also food didn't come out in order. Others served before our group of 5. Food was cold. The French toast was terrible. Was told it is different owners. Was told this was "the place" to check out in Billings, MT. Came here after a 10 hour road trip and heard the chicken fried steak was their best option. Their appetizer sampler was good, it's hard to go wrong with fried frozen food. The clam chowder soup was actually really good and honestly the only thing I really liked. The chicken fried steak, however, was nothing to brag about. The white/cream gravy that was generously applied all over the plate had absolutely no flavor. I could've gone to king Soopers and found a packet of gravy mix that would've tasted a thousand times better. The steak itself had no seasoning and I honestly could not taste anything that I would be able to remember. The fried part was burnt and really had nothing else to offer. Even dousing the steak with ketchup did little to cover for the non existent flavor. Next time I'll put a muzzle loader in my mouth when I'm hungry. read more

A friend and I have breakfast here every week, that comes to about $1,200. per year. Lately, I have to get up and find someone to give me a coffee refill as our very friendly waitress seems to vanish when the place isn't busy. Last week the Tabasco was completely empty, today no pepper in the shaker. When we sat down today, the young woman who brings menus and coffee only had enough coffee to fill cups up half way and she never returned. She probably drinks caffeinated soda in the morning so why bother to fill customers coffee cups up, right? Food is the same it's been for years- decent, reasonably priced diner food. Think I'll look for another place for weekly breakfast. Tired of chasing down coffee and table condiments. Will check back in a few months to see if the place is better managed. read more

Back some years ago the Muzzle Loader was the best place there was for Chicken Fried Steak. It was at least 1/2 inch thick, tender and the coating was similar to what you get on KFC's crispy chicken. I just had the last so called Chicken Fried Steak I will ever eat there. It was very thin and dry coated in some sort of a pulverized coating, which I think was possibly bread. Not only that, but the poker chip thin edges were over cooked and nearly burnt. The fries were not very good either. Best part of the meal was the green beans. One very sad disappointment! read more

This was a suggestion from a road side stop on the way to Billings. Outwardly, it's clean and a friendly staff. We had a large party and were set down quickly. The service was quick and we got our food pretty quickly with the amount of people in the restaurant. The food was just ok. I had pancakes and they were a little thick and tasted like commercial grade mix. Another person in our party found a huge long black hair in the omelet that they ordered. They did fix it with a new omelet and apologized. Overall just a two star just due to the food quality and hassle of the reorder. The staff was great. read more

For people in Billings: I went to muzzle Loader for lunch with a client yesterday and ordered a club sandwich on rye with tater tots... oh my... the sandwich was huge and the tater tots were heaped on, I swear as much as 1/2 a bag of frozen ones from the grocery store. I ate some and asked for a small to go container and had enough left over to completely fill up the container from bottom to top. Incredible. The rye bread was awesome on the club, and the ham and turkey were good quality and flavor. They also have the best sausage gravy and biscuits - a full order gives you two large biscuits with sausage gravy ladled on that fills the whole plate... and it's under $5.00! They have great homemade soups too. You can't go wrong. Great food, lots of it, and great prices. read more
