    Caramel Roll
    Lucas K.

I've been coming to the Muzzle Loader Cafe for close to 40 years now. When I was kid, my grandparents always took me here so I could have Hashbrowns and Gravy. Well it had been a while since I was back in Billings, but I knew I needed to go to the Muzzle Loader. There is a restaurant and a bar. We decided to sit in the bar. My uncle told me I needed to get a Caramel Roll and Chicken Fried Steak. Due to the volume of food, my uncle and I split the Chicken Fried Steak and my wife and I split the Caramel Roll. Honestly, this was one of the best Caramel Rolls I've ever had. It was soft, flavorful, and covered in caramel. This is a must have! You better get here early before they sell out. if you like Chicken Fried Steak, you won't be disappointed. This is not a typical Sysco Chicken Fried Steak. This is handcut, fried, and takes up most of the plate. The Hashbrown were fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The ambience in the bar was fine and the service was great. But the food here really stood out! This is a Billings institution! If you're in town and in need of a big breakfast, head to the Muzzle Loader.

    Burnt steak

When you first walk in it looks like your run of the mill cafe. This restaurant is severely understaffed, one server for the whole place. I will say she was friendly. The food is marginal at best. It is frozen food that has been reheated. Other reviews raved about the chicken fried steak, which really isn't chicken fried steak. My daughter's was burnt and inedible. This restaurant needs work.

    Menu

If you want some really down to earth diner food then this is the place. The Chicken Fried Steak was pretty dang good. Thank goodness they have brown gravy. I can't handle the sausage gravy.

    Super Biscuit and coffee

Like so many other reviewers, I cannot say enough good things about the staff. Jonella was well known among her customers, and at one point, she rallied the troops to sing Happy Birthday to Jessica, a regular customer to whom she presented a plate of French toast with lighted candles. It was fun to watch her visit with the local relatives as she served all of us in her section. I had a Super Biscuit which is an open face biscuit with a sausage patty on one side and your choice of egg, a side of hash browns, all smothered with sausage gravy. My coffee cup stayed full the entire meal, and I enjoyed my experience greatly. I will always stop here for breakfast wherever I visit Billings in the future.

We started with the octopus appetizer and a gluten-free pita. The pita seemed more like a basic gluten-free pizza crust than traditional pita, but that was a minor point because the muhammara was excellent and the pita/crust worked really well with the octopus. They also did a good job accommodating gluten-free needs throughout the meal, via a dedicated gluten-free menu. For dinner, I had the stuffed pork chop, which had a somewhat Greek-inspired preparation. It was served over orzo and stuffed with feta and olives. Really flavorful, well executed, and a more interesting preparation than the typical pork chop. My wife had the duck and enjoyed it as well. We paired dinner with a bottle of Nebbiolo. Their overall wine selection was solid. The atmosphere was comfortable and polished without being overly formal, and the staff were friendly and attentive. Good food, interesting menu, nice atmosphere, and strong service.

If you're an iced tea drinker, I highly recommend getting a spiced iced tea. I was skeptical at first, but it's actually just cinnamon iced tea and was lovely. I had the nachos with ground beef. The sauce was not a generic out of the can sauce. the chips were crisp and the ground beef was well seasoned. The only complaint I have if I have to have one is that the jalapeños were very thickly sliced and took over the entire flavor of any bite they were in; a smaller dice on them would've allowed for the jalapeños to be spread out over the entire nacho and not overwhelm the rest of the flavors. My companion had the mushroom Swiss burger with fries and said they were both a solid burger and fries no complaints. Wheelchair accessibility: accessible parking across the street with a crosswalk; the front door is heavy so you're gonna either need help or be able to open a heavy door and there's actually two doors but plenty of room to maneuver between. the path of travel wasn't bad and there's wheelchair accessible seating in the back of the restaurant. There is no wheelchair accessible seating in the bar area. The bathroom door was light .The accessible stall in the women's bathroom had a grab bar, but there was not sufficient turning radius and the soap was up a little high.

We ordered two burgers, which were fairly average and not quite what you might expect from a high-end steakhouse. That said, the fries were excellent--crispy, well-seasoned, and easily the highlight of the meal. At first, the burgers seemed fine, just not particularly memorable. However, as we continued eating, they became noticeably dry. We also realized that the cheddar cheese was missing from both burgers, and my wife's avocado was also not included. We later learned that condiments like mayo, ketchup, mustard, etc. are provided only upon request on the side, which would have been helpful to know upfront. My wife and I were engaged in a good conversation and our waitress was busy but still attentive, so it wasn't until we were most of the way through the meal that we discovered the issues. When we brought it to Louisa's attention she contacted the manager who was very understanding and kindly credited the burgers from our bill, which we appreciated and felt was more than fair. Tonight we were simply in the mood for a lighter, more casual dinner, and while the burgers missed the mark, the overall experience and service still reflect a restaurant we would return to.

Ok, so, we started with crab cakes and oysters. The oysters were East Coast oysters and I'm from NY, so I had to get them. I haven't had raw oysters in over 20 years, and these did not disappoint! They were so delicious, I ordered 4 more, but they only had one more of the one I wanted, and I happily took it. The crab cakes were good, too. So maybe we should have quit while were ahead.... It took an hour to get our meals, and when we did, I was unimpressed. Mine was slopped onto the plate, with mashed potatoes smeared on the side and the sauce dripped on sides of the inside of the rimmed plate. The potatoes looked congealed, like they had been sitting out, and they had, because the food was cold. I asked for it to be heated up, and I'm fairly convinced they microwaved it, because the plate was warm, but the food still wasn't. The steak was extremely salty, potatoes gluely, and the broccolini was bitter and woefully under seasoned. My husband offered to switch plates. He has the pasta, which was also not very good, but at least it was hot. The description said andouille sausage, but it was clearly kielbasa, and the sauce was greasy and separated. Who hired these so-called chefs? Where did they get their degree? Do they even have one? We go out to eat so rarely. I'm a fantastic cook myself, so when we go out, we want the food we order to be better than what I can make at home. Especially at $30 a plate. So, alas, they get 2 stars, for the excellent service, the delicious oysters, and the beautiful ambiance. They apologized profusely and took my horrible dinner off our bill. We are so grateful for that. We will be back for a pretzel. And more oysters.
