    Caramel Roll
    Lucas K.

I've been coming to the Muzzle Loader Cafe for close to 40 years now. When I was kid, my grandparents always took me here so I could have Hashbrowns and Gravy. Well it had been a while since I was back in Billings, but I knew I needed to go to the Muzzle Loader. There is a restaurant and a bar. We decided to sit in the bar. My uncle told me I needed to get a Caramel Roll and Chicken Fried Steak. Due to the volume of food, my uncle and I split the Chicken Fried Steak and my wife and I split the Caramel Roll. Honestly, this was one of the best Caramel Rolls I've ever had. It was soft, flavorful, and covered in caramel. This is a must have! You better get here early before they sell out. if you like Chicken Fried Steak, you won't be disappointed. This is not a typical Sysco Chicken Fried Steak. This is handcut, fried, and takes up most of the plate. The Hashbrown were fried to perfection. Crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. The ambience in the bar was fine and the service was great. But the food here really stood out! This is a Billings institution! If you're in town and in need of a big breakfast, head to the Muzzle Loader.

When you first walk in it looks like your run of the mill cafe. This restaurant is severely understaffed, one server for the whole place. I will say she was friendly. The food is marginal at best. It is frozen food that has been reheated. Other reviews raved about the chicken fried steak, which really isn't chicken fried steak. My daughter's was burnt and inedible. This restaurant needs work.

If you want some really down to earth diner food then this is the place. The Chicken Fried Steak was pretty dang good. Thank goodness they have brown gravy. I can't handle the sausage gravy.

    Super Biscuit and coffee

Like so many other reviewers, I cannot say enough good things about the staff. Jonella was well known among her customers, and at one point, she rallied the troops to sing Happy Birthday to Jessica, a regular customer to whom she presented a plate of French toast with lighted candles. It was fun to watch her visit with the local relatives as she served all of us in her section. I had a Super Biscuit which is an open face biscuit with a sausage patty on one side and your choice of egg, a side of hash browns, all smothered with sausage gravy. My coffee cup stayed full the entire meal, and I enjoyed my experience greatly. I will always stop here for breakfast wherever I visit Billings in the future.

Great food, great service, and cold beer! This place also has the cleanest kitchen in Billings!

Restaurant was about half full of diners and there were several servers on staff. We were seated quickly and our very friendly server attended to us just as quickly. Got drinks ordered and allowed us a few minutes to decide. We did ask for some suggestions and she nailed them for us from appetizers to salad choice and entrees. My sandwich was really good. Seasoned very strongly and matched well with the au jus. Fries were crispy and delicious as well. One of my employees ordered the bacon wrapped meatloaf. I didn't try that but did take a few of his brussel sprouts - easily the best brussel sprouts I've ever had. Rich and buttery but still with a nice crunch from the char. So good! Other guy ordered the Sockeye and it looked perfect (he ate the whole plate so I know it was!) Vibe was cool also. Dark woods, cool lighting, comfortable seating. Stacked is a great choice if you're downtown, don't skip it!

I need to start by saying that the service was A+++++++ and I don't blame them one bit. Sydney M…read morewas amazing! There was another woman, too, but I forget her name. She was wonderful, too. Ok, so, we started with crab cakes and oysters. The oysters were East Coast oysters and I'm from NY, so I had to get them. I haven't had raw oysters in over 20 years, and these did not disappoint! They were so delicious, I ordered 4 more, but they only had one more of the one I wanted, and I happily took it. The crab cakes were good, too. So maybe we should have quit while were ahead.... It took an hour to get our meals, and when we did, I was unimpressed. Mine was slopped onto the plate, with mashed potatoes smeared on the side and the sauce dripped on sides of the inside of the rimmed plate. The potatoes looked congealed, like they had been sitting out, and they had, because the food was cold. I asked for it to be heated up, and I'm fairly convinced they microwaved it, because the plate was warm, but the food still wasn't. The steak was extremely salty, potatoes gluely, and the broccolini was bitter and woefully under seasoned. My husband offered to switch plates. He has the pasta, which was also not very good, but at least it was hot. The description said andouille sausage, but it was clearly kielbasa, and the sauce was greasy and separated. Who hired these so-called chefs? Where did they get their degree? Do they even have one? We go out to eat so rarely. I'm a fantastic cook myself, so when we go out, we want the food we order to be better than what I can make at home. Especially at $30 a plate. So, alas, they get 2 stars, for the excellent service, the delicious oysters, and the beautiful ambiance. They apologized profusely and took my horrible dinner off our bill. We are so grateful for that. We will be back for a pretzel. And more oysters.
