I am sorry to hear anyone had a bad experience with the MWR kennels. I have used them since 2015 and always had great experience. Where I live on the island the cost is like 2 1/2 more, and no guarantee of good service. I have seen more problems with other kennels. As far as medications and vaccines, it is a Military run kennel and sadly the Military have rules that may be worse than elsewhere. For example my dogs do not need certain vaccine as they go not go into the woods, but it is required everywhere in the 48 state (not rabies another), the Military require it unless you get a document from a Military Vet exempting it Remember Military rules are Military rules and they don't care read more

My sister had to board her pup here when she and her husband went out of town over the holidays. She noted it was a little tough to make a reservation. However, the place was affordable, the staff was nice, and her pup survived the separation from his paw-rents. I had to drive to MWR kennels after my parents had dropped off her dog because they didn't bring him a dog bed or towel, just his food. It was a wild ride through Halawa using google maps. I could not, for the life of me, find the place. Directions from both my mom and sister were useless and a couple times I ended up almost driving into a quarry. I came to my senses and pulled over to the side of the road to check out fellow Yelpers' pictures and reviews, and was able to find the kennels. Basically, you are pulling into the area where the Animal Quarantine station is located. Then, keep an eye out for the faded MWR Pet Kennels signs! I missed the one off the main road, which was what got me lost for what seemed like an eternity. They have a couple more signs on the road leading to the kennels. It would not be my first choice for pet boarding, but if you have military access it's a more affordable alternative to boarding facilities on island. read more

Lucky to be able to use this dog kennel. The staff really care about you dog and will inform you always of any concerns! They don't nickel and dime you like other pet providers. They run the dogs separately in a nice, huge grassy area. Fresh water always in the kennels and feed your dog exactly as directed. They will even send a post of your dog enjoying his surroundings, running around in the open, clear area surrounded by mountains! read more

Saving money is not worth the shitty treatment this place gives. There is one caregiver that actual seems like a dog person.. I had 2 dogs staying here, sharing a kennel.. my male had very high anxiety in this environment due to the way they let the dogs out.. when your dog is released from its kennel it is only able to run circles around the other kennels.. so every time my male relaxed, he would get back on high alert.. I postponed my trip & called twice to get info on him to find out if he was okay.. they said no news is good news. ‍‍ we left & 2 days later while on Guam we received a call that we had 48hrs to pick him up because he was a danger to himself & others.. being that we are a military family we didn't have anyone to just pick him up, therefore my husband had to fly back, move him to a new kennel & then fly back to Guam which caused him to miss our baby shower When we arrived back in Hawaii, I came straight to get my girl who we left there because it was significantly cheaper.. BIG MISTAKE! The caregivers said nothing to us about my girl nor did they acknowledge her as I removed her from the kennel & walked her out.. I even got weird looks while I talked to my girl.. My reason for this review is because when I left MWR I went to pick up my boy.. that we were told was a danger to himself & others.. when I did the caregivers brought him out to us, they all gave him love and said bye, told him they hope to see him again.. plus they told us about his stay & how sweet he was.. how he loved the water & playing in the pool.. also while we were in Guam we were receiving what they call wolf report every day where they sent photos & an update for how he was doing.. if you love your babies & care about their well being I do NOT recommend MWR pet Kennels. It is not worth the money saved. Also, my boy had complementary dog baths KK9 & enjoyed his stay, he wasn't in a rush to leave.. my girl was booking it out the gate @ MWR & ran straight to the car, not to mention she smelled like ass read more

Avoid this place if at all possible. Both the customer service and pet care was abysmal. Unfortunately, I had to board my dogs here after receiving notice of the death of a family member and needing to fly out within 24 hours. The staff approved my dogs' vaccination status the day prior to drop off, but gave me conflicting information at drop off and had me sign a waiver for an annual vaccine despite the fact that it was still current. The next day I was asked to pay an additional fee for medication distribution and endured a series of three phone calls with various staff and management where I repeatedly had to explain that the multivitamin chew I had prepackaged with their meals was not prescription medication. Two days later I received two videos of my dogs who had been injured and were actively bleeding. The wounds on their noses had gotten progressively worse from day to day in the videos. Due to their business hours being restricted to 10am-2pm, we had to pay for an additional night as our return flight arrived later in the afternoon. The staff made no attempt to assist us in picking up the dogs outside of that 4-hour window. When I arrived for pick-up no one was able to explain how the dogs got injured, nor did they make any attempt to rectify the issue. We were given no information on how the dogs did while in their care, if they ate, pottied or drank properly. Anytime we were on the facility grounds other boarded dogs barked continuously and aggressively at us and no attempt was made by the staff to make it a hospitable environment for owners or pets. My dogs returned home exhausted, bleeding, dehydrated and hungry. Please avoid risking your pet's health and safety here. read more

This place is tricky to find but as long as you are heading to the Quarantine area and follow the signs you will find it. This is the only place I have taken my dog and I have never had an issue with them. Dog happy when we leave him and happy when we return. The dogs are outside in a kennel but are covered and have access to water 24/7. Staff is always out feeding, cleaning and checking up on the dogs. Reservations are easy to do but best to go in a reserve as you will need to pay a deposit. During Peak seasons it maybe hard to book so be prepared to show up when reservations open or have an alternate plan. Parking: Parking lot is medium sized but never had an issue looking for a place to park unless you show up during peak seasons. Highly recommend for easy booking and know your pet is safe and taken care of. read more

I heard this place books up fast so I made reservations two months in advance. I needed a $40 deposit and up to date vaccinations. Bordetella is due every 6 months and my dog needed it. I was referred to a couple places that were inexpensive and took walk ins. I emailed the proof of vaccination and we were all set. Fast forward to drop off day. We dropped her off with a washable bed, blanket, toy, treats, and food with rubber seal. I forgot to give her one of our shirts for smell. I asked for her to have play time with the older dogs since she seems to always get beat up by hyper dogs. She was sad to be dropped off and I felt horrible. I knew that she would be sad even if she was at an expensive doggy hotel too. On pick up day the kids came with so we could all get her together. Paid at the office and on the way back to the kennel the staff already had her out and her stuff out. She was so relieved to be with us again. A few staff members knew her by name and she even recognized them. When we got home it took about a day for her to act herself again. She was very quiet and tired. I'm glad to know she was well taken care of. I wouldn't hesitate to bring her back again for our next trip. read more

We have used this facility a couple times now and it was great both times. The most recent stay was May 2023. It is a bummer that it's outside but the kennels they go in are big. They also have an enclosed area within that kennel that has a clean cot to keep the dog out of the wind, rain, or sun and off the ground while resting. The second time our pup stayed we checked in by email or text and got a reply that he was doing well and they even sent a video of him! I appreciated that as it's hard to leave our pets anywhere! Will use them again! They are hard to get into last minute so plan ahead if able. Also, you take a long and narrow gravel road to get there - don't let it freak you out! All those kennels you see are no longer used! They will also let you go back and see the kennels. Someone complained in a review on here that the dogs all barked aggressively and no one did anything about it. They are dogs and that's normal in these situations! So that shouldn't deter anyone from this place...or other similar places. read more

I Do not recommend. I picked our dog up today and a big piece of his hair on his face was cut out by the kennel. He was there for 15 days and I paid extra for daily brushing. He was very dirty and our groomer had to wash him twice and shave his leg due to matting. I called and checked on him and no mention of any problems. Will NOT use again. read more

My two dogs (Charlie and Jaimie) wag their tails when we bring them here... to me, that says a lot. I found out about this place when I needed to make an emergency trip off island. I called and made reservations right away and they were extremely helpful. When you call, a lot of the times no one answers as they get really busy but when you leave a message to make reservations they ALWAYS call back. Drop off and pick ups are between 10am-2pm. I've picked them up a day early before and they are really good about crediting and will let you use that towards your pets' next trip. One of my dogs had surgery a month prior to his stay and couldn't play with other dogs so they were really good about walking him so he got his exercise on his own. They even remembered that for his next trip, asking him if he can now do regular play, that shows that they keep up and remember specific needs for the pets staying with them. And you can't beat the prices! I've boarded them at other places on the island and while they were also great, I was paying twice as much. My dogs seemed to like staying at the MWR Pet Kennels. We'd walk them over to their kennel when we bring them - actually it was more like them walking us, and the staff was friendly and super helpful. We will miss this place! read more

You can't beat this place! The first time I visited I was a bit nervous due to the appearance as you drive back. Once I was at the actual facility though, my mind was at ease. It's a very clean and well kept location. All of the employees are super friendly and you can tell that they love the dogs. My pup had an excellent visit, and I look forward to taking him back here when we leave the island in the future. He was played with twice a day and fed as instructed. Dropped off our 2 pets, a 14 month old German Shepherd and a 12 year old cockapoo on 9 December. No health issues ever presented with either dog, both dogs had been housed here before. Received a phone call around 1500 on Thursday evening, the 12th of December that our German Shepherd had received a scratch on his nose due to trying to get at the dog in the kennel next to his and that they had been fighting. No other mentions of issues at that time, no concern or mention of further need for treatment simply an informative call. Received a phone call at 0700 on Friday morning that our 14 month German Shepherd was found dead. Was informed by the manager of the kennel that called that they would be paying for a necropsy to determine cause of death. Receive a text message an hour later from the manager, that they could not pay for the necropsy, but would take us to whatever facility we'd like to dispose of the remains/perform necropsy if we choose to do so at our cost. The misinformation after relaying our healthy german shepherd had died while in their care was unfortunate at that point. The kennel not having anyone on duty through the night to keep watch of the dogs is another issue of angst. The necropsy revealed a mesentric torsion was the cause of death. This can be treated if recognized and caught. Due to the time to death from beginning of this issue, and the time of the phone call you can easily assume the dog was already in stress and need of help whenever they had initially noticed something wrong with him. No follow up was done though, and again not having staff there overnight led to our pup dying in extreme, recognizable pain and alone. I have zero doubt in my mind whatsoever that our dog would still be alive if he had been at a different kennel and that's my fault. I will live with that choice for a long time. read more

This place is very hard to find. Google maps does not take you to the right location by the way. But once you've found it, it's pretty great. Before going on vacation I researched many different places to board my dogs. A lot of the places I looked at had all the dogs mixed in together, big and small. Toy dogs, and large breeds. I didn't really want this for my pets. I didn't want to have to worry about them and make sure they're getting along with all the other dogs. A lot of places said they couldn't have excessive barkers. My dogs sleep indoors and are usually not away from us, so I wouldn't know how they would react. I had no idea if they were going to bark a ton, or not at all. I was told at one of the places, if they bark a lot, they would need to get picked up early, and we wouldn't get a refund and would still need to pay for their entire stay. Ummmmmmm...That's okay. I did't run into this problem at MWR Pet Kennels, they are not in a residential area so your dog can bark all they want. I like that there are different kennels here, the dogs can socialize if they want to and the staff was very helpful. I appreciate all the help I received when checking in. I had their small pet crate, beds, toys and their food container with me in my car. Instead of making me drag everything out and physically carry it over to where their kennel would be they came out with a motorized cart, loaded up everything I brought and drove it into the facility. It was great. Tips: The food container that you bring in must have a rubber seal around the lid or they will not accept it. They will also charge you $2.00 a day for you to rent one of theirs. Bring in a small dog crate with your dogs blanket if they usually sleep indoors. I brought in two blankets. One for inside the crate and one that I draped on the outside of their crate. read more

I just finished my first boarding experience with my fur babies at MWR kennels. My dogs are indoor dogs. I have two American Bulldogs and they stayed together in the 35x8 suite. I could have gone with the XL kennel and I'm sure they would have been fine, but ultimately I am glad they had the biggest kennel so they could lounge and not get on each other's nerves. I have boarded my dogs before, but it was a smaller kennel on the mainland. I was a little nervous about leaving my babies for 8 days at a larger facility, but they did really well. The staff was great! I called to check in on my pups and they were great about getting back to me with an update. At pick up, the staff appeared knowledgeable about my dogs' behaviors and looked like they had built a rapport with them. My pups came home exhausted, which is normal for them! They were stinky, which is also normal after boarding, so I gave them a quick bath before they entered the house. I also will be washing the dog bed since it got stinky too. Overall, the prices are great and the facility worked out really well for our needs. I will be boarding with them again! read more

ZERO STARS!!!!! If zero stars were possible, TRUST ME I WOULD DO IT! Our pup stayed at MWR Pet Kennels for 16 days, and everything seemed fine until the last day of her stay, which was when we were on a plane back home. As we landed, we received 2 voicemails saying our pup needed to be picked up to go to the vet because she keeps panting hard and seemed like she had a hard time breathing. They also mention that our emergency contact has been contacted to pick her up. As my husband contacted MWR pet kennels back, they stated that she was already picked up by our emergency contact, which wasn't true because we called him first asking what happened, and he said he was about to leave his house. We called back frantically asking where is she, and they said that they will call us back. They called back saying she was still there and that she's ok now. Once we got there, she was NOT FINE! They're response was she just started doing it again. She was breathing/panting so hard that you could see her sides were contracting and she was drooling everywhere, and immobile. We immediately took her straight to VCA emergency and she was admitted. Long story short: Our girl was treated for a Heat Stroke!! The vet praised us for bringing her in when we did. They explained that once a dog gets heat stroke everything happens quickly. It leads to kidney failure then irreversible organ failure. Our pup is now back home with us and she is happy and healthy!!!! I normally don't write reviews but I NEEDED to write this one because we were on the verge of losing our girl!!! Please if you care about your fur child as if they're your own child, don't take them here. read more

At first, I was concerned at leaving our babies here because I wasn't sure how well it was staffed or if the pups were going to be okay with all the free play in the open areas, but our dogs have been there probably ten times over the past 3 years--they love it and they return tired and happy. Also, since they've been so much over the past few years, the staff knows them and knows us, so we get little update reports when we make reservations or pick them up as to how they're doing. However, they're pretty good keeping dates/visits straight (I even spaced one time and dropped the dogs off a day early, they still took them). Since going there several times now, it's clear the staff is aware of what's going on and they keep the place clean. They are also friendly to us and our petsitter when we drop off and pick up. The only downsides are that they are still using some antiquated payment systems, so while they are really open to crediting accounts and carrying money forward to future visits, sometimes the paperwork internally isn't filled out so other staff doesn't know what's what. Also, you have to drop off a deposit within a few days of making a reservations. It's not easy to make reservations with payment over the phone. Also, no one ever answers the phone (only returns calls) but they do leave an emergency number on their VM. Overall, recommend. BTW, they charge $18/day for one dog, $12 additional for another dog in the same kennel plus $2/ day per food (or you bring your own). You can't beat these prices. read more

Boarding our dog here next month. Today, I went to facility to sign application, give deposit and to give our dog's shot record. The facility is off Halawa Valley Road, close to the State of Hawaii animal quarantine. It was pretty easy to find with big bright MWR Pet Kennel signs pointing you to the right direction. Upon driving in, the kennels in the beginning of the road looked dissolate and sad. I almost told my husband to turn back and was ready to cancel my reservation. We drove further in where we saw the entrance and greeted by a very nice worker!! The place seems clean and well taken care of. This place was clearly a different facility from the kennels we first saw driving in. The kennels are all outdoor but has different sizes, all covered. There are some greenery, but a large enough place for digs to run around. The worker took us on a tour then had us follow the paw prints to the trailer office. I got a chance to over hear how workers respond to pet owners calls and address concerns. All very positive i must say. We even got to see them release a dog on its own as it was PCSing out. The worker told me that the dog had been a regular there, boarding with them for as long as she worked there, 4 years, and she was kinda sad knowing she probably won't see the dog again. Got to talk with the owner of the pooch and hear how much they liked this kennel. Such relief to my anxiety!! I got my 90 lb dog a suite, which is quite spacious and now I feel good about leaving him here. I will update this review after baording. My only concern is that I was told they only let the dogs out 2x a day. Im not sure for how long. I wish it could be more though. read more

Don't let the outside appearance fool you. This place did an amazing job with my dog. She's a small 8 lb terrier that I recently adopted from the humane society. First off, I was happy to see that they had a separate building off to the side for smaller dogs. I informed them that she was a little shy and they told me they would try to get her used to other dogs or let her play on her own if she was too scared. When i picked her up, I was amazed. She was happy and full of life. She didnt even want to come to me at first. As we walked out, i was sure the barks of the larger dogs would scare her, but she was just fine...tail wagging and all. Like most people, I shopped around other, fancy places, but the prices were ridicules. Some are just small cages and the dogs are let out to play a few times a day. The small kennels here are about the size of a small bathroom. Plenty of space for a little dog to run around. I highly recommend MWR kennels. They're good with your animals and easy on your wallet...what more do you need.. read more

This place in unbelievable. Our Canine came down with a sickness two months ago. We informed the kennel immediately since we all ready made reservations. They stated that all they would need is a letter from the vet saying that he was healthy and that he was CLEARED to board. So we ran to the vet multiple times (which costs time and money) and received the letter with a fact sheet on the sickness. The letter from the vet stated that he was clear and healthy to board. I submitted the letter to the kennel and they stated that they would get back to us. We received a phone call the day before we are to go on vacation telling us that they would not take the dog. We did what they told us to do, and they still did not accept our dog. Now we are scrambling to find another kennel to take our dog to. Completely unsatisfactory. Will not use again. read more
