My sister was looking for a really good bakery to get a cake for our mother's birthday, and she found My Grandpa's Store on Yelp! They worked with her to figure out a design and flavors and the finished product was amazing! Light blue buttercream with fondant cherry blossoms; it was almost too pretty to eat! The cake was dark chocolate with a chocolate mousse filling. The flavors were wonderful, and the cake was moist and had a perfect texture. The frosting was delicious as well; I often don't finish buttercream frosting because it can be too sweet and/or just too thickly applied, but this was perfect! Our family now has a new go-to bakery for family events!

I used to come here after school in the 60s for candy when it was known as Hank's! I was thrilled to see it come up on a Google search for decorative cakes in LaGrange. Gina Morello did a spectacular job on a custom cake I ordered for a family member's 90th birthday. It was all done via email because I live out of state. Gina sent me photos of her work and encouraged me to look on Pinterest for ideas. What she came up with was more beautiful than I ever imagined it could be and her decorating skills so impressive: it had exquisite flowers on top and trailing down the sides in colors I requested. She really read my mind. The cake was ready exactly when she said it would be and at a reasonable price: $55. The flower loving birthday girl was absolutely thrilled with Gina's artistic work - and how tasty the cake was.

I picked up this cake for my boyfriends 21st birthday! It looked amazing! We got marble cake with strawberry filling it was soooo good! Only thing I'd change next time is to ask for more filling.

They made my banana bread choco chip cake with a chocolate cream layer! I wish they can also offer mint layer but it was delicious the one I have too. I ordered my daughters birthday cake here and for what I needed I though it was going to be expensive since other places were changing me an arm and leg.... boy was I wrong! Gina was a great help she designed the cake just how I asked her to and for a great price! I ordered a 2 tier cake with vanilla for the top cake and cookies and cream for the second and it was so delicious! Everyone at the party was asking where the cake was from because it looked and tasted amazing! I would highly recommend this place! read more

Gina (the owner) made the most exquisite cake for my Grandmother's 90th birthday. My Gram used to be a personal shopper for Bonwit Teller (for those of you who remember this FAB department store). Gina created a cake replica of the old Bonwit teller hat box. Gina actually hand painted Bonwit's signature water color violets on the cake. Her prices were reasonable, and she listened to the ideas I had for our wedding cake. I sent her pictures of what I wanted and she was patient in working with me (I had a few changes in design and size). On the day of the wedding, she delivered it and set it up. If you're Hispanic like me, don't bother. Gina didn't ask for a deposit for my son's cake, that should've been a red flag, however, I gave her the benefit of the doubt. She called to give me a bs story and cancelled on me last minute. I had a couple days to find a bakery for a custom cake, luckily I was able to find one. She gave me a sample cupcake and it was mediocre!! Don't waste time/money here. read more

I live in the Oak Park area so I had checked out a few bakeries near me but after reading the reviews about My Grandpa's Store, I decided to go with this one. I only had to describe what I wanted over the phone and Gina knew exactly what I wanted. The cakes were ready on time and looked so beautiful with our theme. Had no idea what to expect going in there. Went in during the middle of the day and it felt like trespassing in someone's house, which goes to show how homely the inside was. Got some big chocolate chip cookies at $1.50 each. They were very good and the price was low. read more

You may have seen us on "Chicago's Best" which featured our awesome candy counter, Sherman's Ice Cream and original "slush puppies".

History

Established in 1930.

Memories are made of this . . . Remember the "olden" days when your whole world revolved around how to spend your allowance at the local candy store? Well, if you're over 40-something and under 70-something and you lived in the neighborhood around Ogden and St. Francis Xavier Schools, you probably crowded up to the candy counter at Hank's to make that important decision. It was a hard choice; penny candy as far as the eye could see and higher priced stuff too! Hank probably knew you by name and his patience was legendary. Gina is the new-generation-Morello owner and carries on the tradition, and has added her own signature bakery items. The old Cottage Delicatessen has been spiffed up and renamed "My Grampa's Store", but its soul- and the candy counter - remains the same.

I ordered a baby shower cake from Gina. I sent her a picture of the invitation. As the guests arrived, they noticed that the cake matched the baby shower invitation. They were very impressed with the decorations on the cake. I served the cake and everyone raved about the taste. ( I ordered a white cake with buttercream frosting.) One person commented that it was the best white cake she ever had. Gina was very easy to work with. She helped me decide the size of cake that I needed. I also ordered fruit salad from Gina. I liked how she cut the fruit in bite size pieces. The fruit was fresh and came in its own bowl. I would highly recommend this business. read more

What a charming little store. It is a little deli and candy store nestled in a great neighborhood. The owner is the granddaughter of the original owner. This is small town living! They have a candy counter that looks like it is straight out of the 1950's. When the grand kids are in town we take a special trip here. They have an original slush puppy machine. Not a slurpee machine a Slush Puppy machine. if you have never had one before you must go and get one. It is a bit out of the way from the part of town we live in but it is always worth the trip. read more

I first saw Gina's lovely cakes at another bridal shower and knew I wanted one of her creations for my daughter's shower. Gina created 4 dozen of the most exquisite cupcakes, each decorated with a handmade sugar flower (roses, daisies, orchids, cherry blossoms - I left it up to her imagination) and they were amazing, totally edible works of art! Gina was amazing to work with for my son's birthday party. She worked closely with me to build an amazing guitar cake which was 2-tier and she made the give a-way cookies for all of the kids. I was amazed at not only how beautiful everything was but I got so many compliments on how good the cake was. I have used My Grandpa's Store for my daughter-in-law to be's bridal shower and my daughter's baby shower. They were both amazing and wonderful cakes. We had my sisters baby shower on November 2, 2013. The theme was "Babies First Book". Gina did a great job on both the cake and cookies we ordered. She made fondant book characters on a stacked cake that resembled books. Not only did the cake look adorable it tasted so good. This will be the only place I will go for special cakes. read more
