    Majestic Black Hills

Unequivocally and enthusiastically a five star experience. I took two tours with My XO Adventures, one to the Badlands with Dan and one to the Black Hills with Daniel (shout out to Amiee as well). You will not find more personable and knowledgeable guides. A tour with My XO Adventures will be your tour, personalized and entirely flexible. If I could give them ten stars I would. Book with XO!

Unforgettable, Personalized Tours - A Must-Do in the Black Hills! My husband and I had an absolutely fantastic experience with My XO Adventures! We did back-to-back tours, and both were nothing short of amazing. On the first day, Daniel, the owner, took us on the Mt. Rushmore, Crazy Horse & Custer State Park Tour. He is incredibly personable and funny--within minutes, he felt like an old friend. Some of the tour highlights included Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse, Custer State Park & Wildlife Loop Road, Needles Eye Tunnel, and Sylvan Lake. We saw so many animals along the way, and Daniel kept us entertained with his humor and deep knowledge of the area. The vehicle was spotless, comfortable, and stocked with snacks--a thoughtful touch. On the second day, we did the Badlands Sunset, Wildlife, and Amazing Night Sky Adventure with Dan (not to be confused with Daniel). Once again, we were blown away! We saw an incredible amount of wildlife, and Dan captured breathtaking photos with his professional camera, which he generously shared with us. He was so polite, knowledgeable, and passionate about the region--it made the experience even more special. A huge shoutout to Daniel's mother, Amiee, who handled our booking. She was incredibly polite, sweet, and quick to respond to our questions, making the process seamless from start to finish. If you're considering a tour, book with My XO Adventures--you won't regret it! This is a small, independently owned company that truly cares about providing a personal, high-quality experience. Wouldn't you rather be on a private, customizable tour instead of a crowded bus with strangers? We're so glad we chose My XO Adventures and highly recommend them to anyone visiting the Black Hills and Badlands!

Glorious trip. Many thanks to XO Adventures. Simple. Amazing. Life Affirming.

Really wish we could have done all the tours but this trip for us was so much better with Daniel's knowledge.

What you need to know: They have two tours: The Adventure Tour (1 hour) Crystal Tour (1/2 hour) One lady had mobility issues and a cane and they accommodated her on the Crystal tour and she was fine. There was one flight of stairs that she had to take twice but she took her time. There was also a newborn baby that I would not recommend - the baby kept crying and the parent had to end their tour. Kids were fine. Reservations: preferred but not required, last tour is close to 5pm, but call to check. Attire/Gear: I had on vans and no special gear and was fine but note, it's colder down there in the summer, and warmer in the winter. We went in August and it was about 55 degrees inside the cave. Lucky I brought a hoodie. Towards the end of the tour you have to get back up using stairs so you heat up quickly. Our tour guide Josh was fun and happily chatted with us - they feed off of your feedback! He also let us use their umbrellas to get back to our car since a storm had begun while we were in the cave. I recommend this tour for all ages so you can learn a little about the area and history of the cave!

Live demos show how these items were made in the olden days. Herman Jones, the octogenarian owner of Fort Hays, is the real thing. Do listen to his personal story and ask questions. He not only welcomes visitors but delights in demonstrating how to fashion rope out of toilet paper! Of course, the dinner and show are the main reason to visit. "If I can talk to the President Would he pay attention…read morereally listen?" (LL Cool J) In the heart of downtown Rapid City, SD, it's quite understandable why many tourists might stop dead in their tracks and do a double take. That's because of the 44 life-sized bronze statues of America's Presidents found on twelve intersections up and down Main Street and St. Joseph Street in downtown Rapid City. Accordingly, Rapid City earned its nickname of "the City of Presidents". These statues are more or less life-sized and match the height and weight of the presidents. That is except for Ohio heavyweight William Howard Taft, who weighed over 350 pounds. His statue was slimmed down to make it more affordable. The statues poses are very cool -John Kennedy with his young son John-John, Barack Obama's statue captures his election night scene when he came out holding his daughter's hand, Abraham Lincoln was also sculpted with his son, Tad; FDR is shown standing at a podium with radio mics, and a slimmed down Taft commemorating the day he became the first president to deliver the first pitch at a baseball game. There is an on-line map that shows the location of the statues. This is most definitely one of the coolest things I've seen and a real treat for the history nerds out there. BONUS TIP As the weather got colder, we began to see considerate tourists and residents decorate the statues with wool hats or plastic fireman's hats to add a sense of humor to the statues. I can only imagine what will happen on Halloween!

**June 2025: Tuesday Morning/Afternoon Visit**…read more This was one of best highlight during my midwest trip. All 45 presidents have a statute at the corner of one of two streets in Rapid City. They're all positioned in different ways and it's pretty cool to see what pose was selected for them and how it reflected their personality and legacy. If you visit the Rapid City Visitor Center first you can get a map of all the presidents and participate in a Scavenger Hunt where you obviously can earn a prize! I love a challenge and my friend and I made it our mission to play and win! Just an FYI - you'll want to look very diligent behind and on the side of the presidents because some of items to find aren't very obvious - so they definitely put you to work! I think to walk up and down the two streets and look for the clues took at least two hours so it was a great way to get in my steps. I also took photos with each president so that probably slowed me down to be honest lol Our current president is located inside the Visitor Center and after we finished we got to redeem a cool South Dakota Tumbler and sticker. If you're in Rapid City you should definitely take on the Scavenger Hunt Challenge! One of the visitor center volunteers also said that during the winter time the presidents get decorated with scarves, mittens, hat etc. I'd love to see that one day!

Each statue is privately funded, then a local artists is selected . They research the president ; learning their passions, hobbies & achievements during their presidency. Well known mannerisms or characteristics are incorporated. This information helps to decide on the pose, facial expression, clothing, and all the amazingly tiny details found on each statue. After they have their concept the sculpting work can begin. It can take up to 9 months for each statue to be created. All the statues match the height & weight of the president except one. Pres. Taft's statue was trimmed down from his actual weight to make the monument affordable. A new audio tour allows us to get to know each as people, not just presidents. We can now dial in or scan the QR code found in the brochure to read along. The audio will even point out those tiny details the artist added info we might overlook.

Being able to walk around a display with that kind of detail is impressive. I just wish that there was a bit more included in the price. It is $12 per person (discounts for large families/groups). This price includes a light and audio show (about 20 min) of a life size replica of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. For $30 per person, you get to see the show and shoot 3 shots from a musket at the range out back. The light and audio show was a pretty standard museum type explanation of the events surrounding the Declaration of Independence and the people involved. It's well done and fun to look at. They have information around the room to look at afterwards that gives you a background of all the people mentioned. The stories on them are worth taking a few minutes to read and was probably my favorite part. We really just didnt get enough out of it to make it worth the stop, especially for the price. We were in and out of there in less than an hour. We loved the idea of being able to shoot the replica guns out back and it would have been a fun way to complete the experience, but for $30 each it just didn't make sense. I'm glad we checked it out, but its needs a bit more included to make the detour worth it.

The room was spacious and unique with a hi-top coffee bar facing out over the city. There was an easy chair and King bed. We had a fridge. The bathroom was fine - everything worked. We slept well the bed was comfy and the a/c was quiet and easy to use. The furnishings did seem a bit dated. The wall had a large map of Rapid City. We had a sit down dinner with our group and the service was outstanding. I ordered a filet mignon which was prime beef that was truly excellent. My wife got a walleye that she did not like apparently too bony. We had a nice breakfast before leaving and this was the only restaurant on the entire tour that provided me with crisp bacon which I always ask for. We would stay here again when in the area. "The lightnin' rod, strike it hot It's gonna hit you like…read morethe Rushmore rock" (AC/DC) WHAT WENT WELL: The location is excellent, within a very walkable distance of many restaurants and Presidential statues. The room was decent sized, the beds were comfortable, the HVAC and Wi-Fi worked well, the room had a nice work desk, and the shower pressure and temperature were excellent. Bottles of water were available in the lobby for just one dollar with payment on the honor system. We had one dinner here and that was fantastic. The food servers and staff in general were very good. BREAKFAST REVIEW: The buffet had some good hot dishes, especially corned beef hash which is always appreciated. There were just two types of cereal, and there was just bread - no English muffins or bagels. There were zero Danishes, pastries, or muffins, which are pretty much standard in other hotel breakfasts. They had whole fruit for your yogurt and granola, but the cut fruit was obviously from a can. IMPROVEMENT OPPORTUNITIES: We saw many examples for improvement opportunities. The arms on the room's upholstered chair were badly worn out, and more significantly, the vinyl on both headboards were badly ripped and missing chunks. Our room had no refrigerator. We stayed at seven hotels on our tour, and this was the only hotel room without one. Even the peephole on the door was an issue, it was set so high on the door, I couldn't even see through it when I stood on tippy toes. There were enough electrical plugs in the room for for charging, but the two on the nightstand didn't work. The bathtub floor was chipped and was extremely slippery. Thank goodness there were grab-bars on two walls. The tub drained slowly, even with the drain removed, which is how we found it when we took occupancy. The water pooled for a while before it emptied.
